I Quit Wrestling: Sakshi Malik

Olympic medalist Sakshi Malik, who was a face of wrestlers’ protest against former WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh over sexual harassment allegations, on Thursday announced that she is quitting wrestling after his aide Sanjay Singh was elected president of the federation.

Sakshi Malik, distraught and emotional, broke down as she left the venue after addressing a press conference in the national capital.

She put her shoes on the table at the press conference as she announced her decision to quit wrestling.

“We slept for 40 days on the roads and a lot of people from several parts of the country came to support us. If Brij Bhushan Singh’s business partner and a close aide is elected as the president of WFI, I quit wrestling,” she said, accompanied by some other wrestlers who were part of the protest.

“We have made demands for a woman president. If the president would be a woman, harassment would not happen. But, there was no participation of women earlier and today you can see the list, not even a single woman was given a position. We had fought with complete strength but this fight will continue. The wrestlers of the new generation have to fight,” she said.

Vinesh Phogat, World Championships and Asian Games medallist, also expressed her deep disappointment and said that the future of wrestling is dark and grapplers are still fighting.

“There are minimal expectations but we hope that we get justice. It’s saddening that the future of wrestling is in the dark. To whom shall we convey our grief?… We are still fighting while we are training,” she said.

Sanjay Singh was on Thursday elected as the new president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI).

The Wrestling Federation of India elections were held on Thursday after several postponements earlier in the year.

A panel led by Sanjay Singh won the WFI election. The other panel got seven votes.

“National Camps (for wrestling) will be organised. Wrestlers who want to do politics can do politics, those who want to do wrestling will do wrestling,” Singh told the reporters.

Sanjay Singh served on the WFI’s previous executive council. Since 2019, he has also served as the national federation’s joint secretary.

The WFI elections were originally slated to be held on August 12. However, the Punjab and Haryana High Court, while holding a hearing on a petition in August, extended the stay on the WFI elections till September 25. Elections to the federation, which oversees wrestling in the country, were initially planned for June this year.

Earlier this month, Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik met Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur at his residence in the national capital for discussions on the WFI polls.

Sakshi’s husband, Satyawart Kadian, a wrestler himself, was also among those who called on the minister. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, the wrestlers said they were assured that the government would keep its promise that no one related or close to Brij Bhushan would get a post in the WFI. Following the win of his aide Sanjay Singh in the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) elections, the former president of the federation Brij Bhushan Singh said on Thursday that it is the victory of wrestlers across the country and added “dabdabaa tha, dabdabba rahegaa” (dominance was there, dominance will stay!).

Former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh’s aide Sanjay Singh on Thursday elected as the new president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI).

“This is not my personal victory, this is the victory of the wrestlers of the country. All wrestling activities were stopped for 11 months. I hope that after the formation of the new federation, wrestling events will resume which were paused for the past 11 months,” said Brij Bhushan to the media.

“A message has been given. Every akhaada in the country is bursting firecrackers. Dabdabaa tha, dabdabaa rahega!. I want to give the credit of victory to the wrestlers of the country and the electors.I want to thank the government as well. The elections were done on instructions of the Supreme Court and the Centre had submitted the PIL for this. Elections were held by the Punjab and Haryana High Court and the Centre went ahead to make sure elections happened and a non-partisan person was chosen as president. This ‘grahan’ of 11 months on wrestling is over. Within 10 days, the landscape of wrestling will change again and we will perform in the Olympics the way people want us to,” concluded Brij Bhushan.

On former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh’s aide Sanjay Singh elected as the new president of the WFI, Wrestler Sakshi Malik said, “We have made demands for a woman president. If the president would be a woman, harassment would not happen. But, there was no participation of women earlier and today you can see the list, not even a single woman was given a position. We had fought with complete strength but this fight will continue. The wrestlers of the new generation have to fight.”

Sanjay Singh was on Thursday elected as the new president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI).

The Wrestling Federation of India elections were held on Thursday, December 21, after several postponements earlier in the year. The vote took place earlier in the day in New Delhi, and the counting began soon after.

As the results are out the press conference is to be held by star wrestlers and Olympic medallists Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik, who earlier came out against the now-deposed WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, accusing him of sexual harassment. (ANI)

Sanjay To Be Produced Before Court By ED

Aam Aadmi Party leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in the Delhi liquor policy case on Wednesday, will be produced shortly before the Rouse Avenue Court by the ED officials.

Sanjay Singh’s father Dinesh Singh has also arrived at the Rouse Avenue Court.

Sanjay Singh was taken into custody after a day-long interrogation by ED officials at his Delhi residence. He was later brought to the ED office on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, AAP workers and supporters who were protesting the arrest of AAP MP Sanjay Singh were detained by the police in Mumbai.

The Aam Aadmi party has been protesting in several parts of India after the arrest of Sanjay Singh. AAP workers staged a protest in the national capital at the Aam Aadmi Party office and demanded his release.

Several senior leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party including Atishi, and Reena Gupta raised slogans against the BJP and demanded the release of AAP leader Sanjay Singh.

Special CP Law and Order Dependra Pathak said, “It is a protest by the Aam Aadmi Party. The crowd is gathering gradually. Police are present here to maintain the law and order professionally. We are in communication with the organisers. We will make sure that law and order are maintained. We will try to contain the protestors.”

Speaking on Sanjay Singh’s arrest and the raids by Central agencies, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai targeted the BJP and said “This is going to continue till the 2024 elections unless the BJP loses”.

AAP workers earlier staged a massive protest in Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow over the ED raids conducted at Sanjay Singh’s residence.

Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister and AAP Supremo Arvind Kejriwal condemned Singh’s arrest stating, “The arrest of Sanjay Singh is completely illegal. This shows Modi ji’s nervousness. They will arrest many more opposition leaders till the elections”.

Also, the AAP MP’s arrest triggered sharp reactions from the leaders of the INDIA alliance.

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Manoj Jha said, “It is not the ED that has arrested Sanjay Singh, he has been arrested by the unit of BJP that comprises ED-IT-CBI. Dark days have begun…In this era of dictatorship, jo dar gaya wo mar gaya. The dictators themselves are scared. This fear will be retaliated against soon”.

Notably, Sanjay Singh is the third prominent leader of the AAP, after Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain, to be arrested by a central agency. (ANI)

Union Minister Tomar on Sanjay

Law Will Take Its Course: Union Min Tomar On Sanjay’s Arrest

Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar slammed the opposition over the arrest of Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh by the Enforcement Directorate in the Delhi liquor policy case and said that the law will take its course against those who indulge in corruption.

Speaking to the Media, Tomar said, “The law will take its course against those who indulge in corruption. PM Modi said that I will neither eat nor allow anyone to eat. Dishonest people should be more careful. Corruption is involved and that is why the CBI and ED have swung into action. ED and CBI get paid to work against dishonest people.”

The arrest of Sanjay Singh is the second high-profile arrest in the case after former Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia.

The federal agency on Wednesday morning raided the residence of AAP leader Sanjay Singh in connection with the now-cancelled liquor excise policy in the national capital. The development followed closely on the heels of the ED’s raid on the premises belonging to two of Sanjay Singh’s close aides in the same context.

The case connects with claims that Singh and his partners played a part in the Delhi government’s decision to give licenses to alcohol shops and merchants in 2020, causing losses to the state exchequer and violating anti-corruption laws.

The AAP is also set to hold a protest outside the BJP headquarters on Thursday opposing Singh’s arrest. (ANI)

Sanjay Singh

AAP Condemns Sanjay’s Arrest In Liquor Policy Case

Coming down heavily on the BJP-led central government after the arrest of Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with the Delhi liquor policy case on Wednesday, AAP leader Saurabh Bhardwaj called it a demonstration of the BJP’s desperation and fear of loss ahead of the upcoming elections.

Addressing a press conference in the national capital with fellow AAP leaders Atishi and Priyanka Kakkar, Bhardwaj accused the BJP-led regime of unleashing the central agencies on Opposition leaders.

“Sanjay Singh was arrested without a shred of evidence or reason. This is nothing but an act of desperation. It only goes to show that Prime Minister Modi knows that he is losing the upcoming elections. It is the BJP’s desperation and fear of loss that are prompting it to unleash the central agencies on Opposition leaders,” Bhardwaj said.

“People have made up their minds to throw out the BJP in the poll-bound states. Leaders are often drawn to such desperate actions when they sense that they are losing their hold on power,” the AAP leader added.

Delhi Minister Atishi also hit out at the Centre over Sanjay Singh’s arrest, calling it a “pre-planned script.”

“It was a pre-planned script. ED officials went to his (Singh’s) residence, sat there for eight hours before arresting him. It only exposes the BJP’s desperation to go after the Opposition, sensing defeat in the upcoming elections. The PM is aware that be it the upcoming assembly elections or the Lok Sabha election next year, the people have decided to vote out the BJP,” Atishi said.

Later, speaking to ANI, the AAP leader said Singh’s arrest was nothing but an attempt to muzzle the Opposition’s voice, adding that the INDIA bloc will continue undeterred and undaunted in its fight to save the Constitution.

“The BJP knows they are losing the upcoming elections. Yesterday, there were raids on senior journalists, and today, Sanjay Singh was arrested. This is clearly an attempt to stifle the Opposition’s voice. However, these arrests and intimidatory tactics would not stop us from our fight to save the Constitution,” she told ANI.

AAP MLA Somnath Bharti also shredded the BJP over the arrest of the fellow AAP leader saying, “This is the beginning of an undeclared emergency in the country.”

“The BJP will lose the next Lok Sabha elections. The INDIA bloc will win. They don’t even have a sliver of evidence against Sanjay Singh, much less a money trail. This is merely an expression of their desperation and frustration. We will continue to fight against them in courts, on roads, and in the Parliament,” Bharti told ANI.

The Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday arrested Sanjay Singh in connection with a money laundering case linked to the now-withdrawn new excise policy of Delhi.

It is the second high-profile arrest in the case after former Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia. The arrest came hours after the ED conducted raids at the residence of the AAP Rajya Sabha MP in connection with the case. (ANI)

Sanjay Singh Raid

Raid Underway At Sanjay Singh’s Residence

A Directorate Enforcement (ED) raid is underway at the residence of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh in connection with excise policy case.

Earlier in May this year, MP Sanjay Singh in a letter to Finance Secretary T V Somanathan said that the ED Director and Assistant Director deliberately linked his name to the alleged liquor scam without any basis, tarnishing his public image and defaming him.

Singh mentioned that his name was added on the basis of statements from Dinesh Arora.

Singh also alleged that the officers misused their position tarnished his public image and demanded prosecution against them. He said he already sent a legal notice to the officers to issue an open and public apology.

According to ED sources, the name of the AAP leader appears four times in the ED charge sheet out of which one reference was wrong and typed inadvertently.

At one place Sanjay Singh’s name was mentioned instead of Rahul Singh who was then excise commissioner.

ED is reportedly searching the residence of Sanjay Singh, further details are awaited. (ANI)

AAP'S Sanjay Singh lEGAL NOTICE TO ED

AAP’s Sanjay Singh Sends Legal Notice To ED Demands Apology

Aam Aadmi Party leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh has demanded that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) issue a public apology to him within 48 hours.

The MP has sent a legal notice to ED for tarnishing his public image.
The notice was sent on the MP’s behalf by Advocate Maninderjit Singh Bedi.

The notice addressed to Enforcement Directorate’s Director Sanjay Kumar Mishra and Additional Director Jogender, said, “The officials have knowingly and intentionally made certain untrue, defamatory, and incriminating statements against the MP in the Delhi Excise Policy prosecution complaint.”

The notice further points out that, “The ED’s associates, agents and employees have attempted to tarnish and mutilate the AAP leader’s public image and have attempted to otherwise popularise a perverse, false, motivated, wild, malicious and baseless campaign against his alleged involvement in Delhi Excise Policy.”

It further reads, “In conspiracy to defame and affect the reputation of Sanjay Singh, the ED has deliberately and maliciously defamed him by imputing his involvement in some Liquor Policy on the basis of an alleged statement dated October 1, 2022, recorded under Section 50 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act of Dinesh Arora.”

While also categorically denying the allegations, the notice said, “The allegations are completely baseless, malicious, and utter falsehood. It was portrayed by ED that the MP is involved in the alleged matter, which is false and derogatory.”

“The name of Sanjay Singh was mentioned by ED out of nowhere and without any basis, by making false statements in Judicial proceedings where ED are obligated to make only truthful assertions. The said false and derogatory statements have been made with the clear intention to defame the MP and to adversely affect his reputation and subject him to ridicule and social hatred.”

“The alleged statement of Dinesh Arora as recorded by ED has been mischaracterized and misquoted by ED in the complaint for ulterior purposes. The ED intentionally added the name of Sanjay without any basis with the mala-fide intent to cause disrepute to him. Towards this end, the ED has further circulated and caused to be published the complaint and specifically the portion pertaining to my client,” the notice reads further.

The notice calls upon the ED to immediately issue an open and public apology within 48 hours of receipt of the notice, for the mental agony and harassment faced by the MP.

“Please note that ED is severely liable for a such misdeed done with malicious intent. If you fail to comply with the above within 48 hours of the date of receipt of this notice, I have instructions to initiate appropriate civil and criminal proceedings against you before the competent court, and in that event, you shall be fully responsible for the same and related cost and consequences,” the notice said.

Reacting to the issue, Sanjay Singh said, “It is highly regrettable that an agency like the ED, which is supposed to be impartial, has resorted to such baseless allegations against me. I will not tolerate this kind of character assassination, and I have decided to take legal action against the officials responsible.” (ANI)
