TMC Raids

Raids Underway At TMC’s Firhad, Mitra’s Residence

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Sunday raided two Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders Firhad Hakim and Madan Mitra residences in connection with the alleged civil municipal bodies recruitment ‘scam’.

While Hakim is the Minister of Urban Development in West Bengal and also the Kolkata Mayor, Mitra is an MLA from Kamarhati.

The raids are ongoing at around 12 places including Kolkata, Kanchrapara, Barrackpore, Halisahar, Dumdum, North Dum Dum, Krishnanagar, Taki, Kamarhati, Chetla, Bhowanipore and other places.

Multiple raids are being conducted at the premises of several people including public servants involved in an ongoing investigation on municipal recruitment.

A case has been registered against the director of a private company and some other individuals following the orders of the Calcutta High Court.

CBI officials alleged that all contracts pertaining to various Municipalities, District Primary School Councils and others for the recruitment of Group C and Group D employees were given to the private company.

It was further alleged that the said company was entrusted with all the tasks like setting up of question papers, printing and scanning of OMR sheets and preparation of the final merit list.

It was also alleged that the Director of the private company and other individuals including public servants hatched a conspiracy among themselves. In pursuant to that conspiracy, the accused who was responsible for the printing, designing and evaluation of OMR sheets allegedly facilitated the illegal appointments of several unmeritorious candidates in several municipalities in lieu of money.

The ongoing raids sparked various reactions from political leaders in the state. TMC leaders have questioned the timing of the raids especially when the party’s MGNREGA protests are ongoing and the elections are around the corner.

Questioning the raids, TMC MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay said, “Is this an intentionally used agency action against the TMC at a time when protests are ongoing in front of the Raj Bhawan in demand of MGNREGA funds?”

“What is the result of the raids and investigation? In maximum cases, these are not projected at all. We are prepared to cooperate with CBI and ED at every stage,” he said speaking to ANI.

Bandyopadhyay also said that “prestigious institutions” must try to keep their “prestige”.

Meanwhile, state Women and Child Development Minister Shashi Panja said that the Bharatiya Janata Party has resorted to such an action because the MGNREGA protest in Bengal is gaining strength.

“This is the fourth day of our protest…The Bharatiya Janata Party cannot fight politically. So they have unleashed two puppets CBI and ED on the two leaders. Our fight on real issues will go on,” Panja said speaking to ANI.

Meanwhile, BJP leader Rahul Sinha said that the CBI must have got new evidence against the two TMC leaders due to which the raids are ongoing.

“Both Firhad Hakim and Madan Mitra’s names were coming up repeatedly in the municipal service scam. The CBI must have come upon new evidence which is why the raids are ongoing,” Sinha said speaking to ANI.

Sinha also reminded the TMC about the mountain of cash that was seized by the investigating agencies during one such raid on one of their Ministers. Sinha was referring to Partha Chatterjee’s

“The Trinamool Congress starts saying that all these are political vendettas. The hill of cash was found during these raids. During that time they had said the same thing. After the raids, we will get to know about what materials were seized.”

“This drama is all because of Lok Sabha elections. Nothing will happen. The more they do such things the more number of seats will be won by Trinamool. They know that in India, only Trinamool can take on the BJP. So they are attacking us,” a TMC youth leader who has assembled with a few workers outside Madan Maitra’s residence said. (ANI)

J'khand Polls

Sagardighi Bypoll: Cong’s Biswas Leading TMC’s Debashish

Counting votes for the Sagardighi Assembly constituency in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district started on Thursday, with the Congress’ Byron Biswas over the ruling TMC’s Debashish Banerjee by a margin of 515 votes.

The counting votes will decide the electoral fates of three Sagardighi candidates — Congress’s Byron Biswas, BJP’s Dilip Saha and the Trinamool Congress’s Debashish Banerjee.
The bypoll for the Assembly seat was held on Monday.

The bye-election to the Sagardighi Assembly seat was necessitated following the death of Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Subrata Saha in December 2022.

While the BJP is counting its electoral hopes in the constituency on Dilip Saha, the Left Front has put its weight behind the Congress nominee, Bayron Biswas.

Apart from Sagardighi, counting of votes are also underway for Assembly segments in four other states. (ANI)

BJP’s Ideology Is Self-Centered: Mamata

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and said that the BJP’s ideology is to be “self-centered” while her party Trinamool Congress abides by the Constitution.

Addressing a convention of Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers in Kolkata, Banerjee said, “CPI (M) and BJP belong to the same team…BJP’s ideology is to be self-centered…Our compulsion is to obey the Constitution. But today history, geography, and politics are being forgotten; education and culture are being changed,”
The TMC supremo spoke on Trinamool Congress’ vision as it completed 25 years on January 1, and said “the party aims at a united India with a strengthened federal structure”.

On Sunday, she took to Twitter on the occasion of the 25th foundation day of the Trinamool Congress and congratulated everyone for believing in the power of Maa, Maati, and Manush (mother, soil, and people).

She also recalled the party’s struggle through the years and the role played by the party workers in empowering people, fighting injustice, and inspiring hope among the masses.

“This day, 25 years ago, TMC came into existence. I recall our struggles through the years & the role we have played in empowering people, fighting injustice, and inspiring hope. I heartily congratulate everyone for believing in the power of MAA, MAATI, MANUSH,” tweeted Mamata.

Trinamool Congress was created over Mamata’s difference from the Congress. She left Congress and formed TMC on January 1, 1998. TMC which emerged as a regional party was elevated to a national Party in 2016.

The party ended the 34-year left regime in West Bengal in 2011 and has been in power since then, winning three consecutive assembly elections.

Currently, it is the third largest party in the parliament after BJP and the Congress with 23 members in the Lok Sabha and 13 in the Rajya Sabha. (ANI)

BJP Protests Against WB Govt Over Spike In Dengue Cases

West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari slammed the Mamata Banerjee-led government over a spike in Dengue cases on Tuesday and said that Health Minister doesn’t come to the House (Assembly).

Amid rising cases of Dengue in West Bengal, BJP leaders protested against the state government today by taking out a march. The BJP leaders were wrapped in a mosquito net and carried mosquito models with them as a mark of protest.
While talking to the media persons in Kolkata, Suvendu Adhikari said, “Health Minister doesn’t come to the House (Assembly). No discussion takes place over Health and Home Departments, they don’t take questions.”

Earlier on November 7, Former Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Adhikari had written a letter to the Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya over the surge of dengue cases in the state and urged the Centre to send a ‘Team of Doctors to guide the State Govt and provide relief to the people. “I am writing you this letter as the State of West Bengal is in the midst of a Health Emergency,” the letter said.

Taking to Twitter Suvendu Adhikari said, “Dengue situation in West Bengal has spiraled out of control due to the inefficient West Bengal government. I have written a letter to Hon’ble Union Health Minister; Mansukh Mandaviya to send a Central Team of Doctors & Public Health Experts to guide the State Govt & provide relief to the people.”

Pointing to the alarming situation of dengue in the state, Suvendu Adhikari in his letter wrote, “At a time when you are choking in the national capital, the people of West Bengal are tormented by mosquitos. Dengue has taken West Bengal in its grip for the past three months, with the cases on the rise in several parts of the state. The worst affected areas are Kolkata, North 24 Parganas, Murshidabad, Hooghly & Howrah.”

Amid the worsening of the situation, West Bengal on October 28 reported garbage littered on roads in Kolkata, which raised concern as the city was already grappling with the outbreak of dengue.

The garbage was found littered open on New Town and Salt Lake streets.

As a result, the citizens are keeping the doors and windows of their houses closed in disgust over the rotten stench of garbage and in fear of dengue-causing mosquitoes entering their houses.

According to locals, despite repeated pleas by the government and doctors to keep the neighbourhood clean to fight dengue, these places are littered with garbage.

Notably, Suvendu Adhikari in his letter drew Union Minister Mandviya’s attention to the dengue cases, recorded the highest this year in the 43rd week since 2017.

Hitting out at the Mamta Banerjee-ruled West Bengal government for running out of funds to control the ungovernable dengue situation in the state, BJP MLA had said, “This year the Dengue situation has gone out of control in West Bengal, as because the financially bankrupt State Government could not provide funds in time for the precautionary measures. Let me reiterate it; the West Bengal Health Department did not have adequate funds, which led to the rise in cases as the measures which were needed to be taken, months earlier, to control the breeding of ‘Aedes Aegypti’ mosquitoes were not carried out properly due to the lack of funds.” (ANI)

Big Khela In WB, TMC May Not Survive In December: BJP MLA

Stating that there will be a ‘big khela’ in West Bengal, Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Agnimitra Paul on Tuesday claimed that the Trinamool Congress-led state government would not survive after December this year.

The leader further claimed that over 30 MLAs of the ruling TMC are in touch with the BJP and that the Mamata Banerjee-led government’s “existence is at stake”.
“There will be a ‘khela’ here in December. More than 30 TMC MLAs are in contact with our party. They know that their Govt will not continue for long after December. Their existence is at stake,” Paul told ANI.

The BJP leader also claimed that West Bengal is moving towards a “financial emergency” while accusing Mamata of running a “bankrupt government”.

“We will not tell the strategy, but something will happen. Our leadership is repeatedly claiming that there will be a big khela in December. We are moving towards a financial emergency. It is a bankrupt government. They do not have money. How would they work? 50 per cent of those running the state are in jail. The rest 50 per cent will also go to jail. Who will run the government?” she said.

The BJP leader’s remarks come weeks after the party’s state president Sukanta Majumdar claimed in September that Mamata would be arrested and that over 40 TMC leaders were in touch with the BJP.

He had further gone on to claim that the TMC government will fall in December.

“Mamata Banerjee may be arrested by December. 41 TMC people’s names are with top leadership. The government will fall in December,” Majumdar had claimed.

Similar claims were also made by BJP leader and film star Mithun Chakraborty who had claimed to be in touch with TMC MLAs.

“I am in touch with 21 MLAs of Mamata Banerjee’s party, I said this earlier, and again, I stand by my point. I request you just wait for the time,” added Mithun Chakraborty.

Earlier, the Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari said that the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) won’t last even for the next six months in the state.

His remarks came after the ruling party put up posters claiming that a “new and reformed TMC” come in the next six months.

“Enforcement Directorate(ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) are doing their job. This party (TMC) will not last for even six months, December is their deadline,” LoP Suvendu Adhikari had said in Purba Medinipur. (ANI)

Mamata: Centre Did Not Allow Me To Meet Hasina

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday lambasted the BJP-led Centre for not inviting her to meet visiting Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Addressing her party members at Netaji Indoor Stadium here, Banerjee said, “This is the first time the Prime Minister of Bangladesh came to India and did not come to Bengal despite her desire to meet me.”
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo said she wanted to know why the BJP-led Centre was worried about her meeting with Hasina. Mamata said she should not speak on bilateral ties or external affairs of the country. She further alleged that the Centre attempts to prevent her from visiting foreign countries whenever she was invited.

“I do not know why they (BJP) are so angry. They also did not let me go to many places including Chicago and China to attend events. While BJP attends invitations globally, they stop us from attending the same. We ask: How long will you continue your autocracy?” Mamata said.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is on a four-day visit to India to strengthen bilateral ties between the two countries, arrived in New Delhi on Monday.

Bangladesh is an important partner under India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy.

Soon after arriving in New Delhi on Monday, Bangladesh Prime Minister met his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi and held bilateral talks to review and further strengthen the relationship between both countries at Hyderabad House, following which seven MoUs have been signed between the two countries.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, during the joint press statement at Hyderabad House, expressed hope that the issue of Teesta water sharing with India will be resolved soon. “The two countries have resolved many outstanding issues and we hope that all outstanding issues, including Teesta water-sharing treaty, would be concluded at an early date,” she said in a joint statement with PM Narendra Modi.

The Teesta river dispute is an important point of bilateral talks between India and Bangladesh. Both countries signed an agreement in 2011 to share surface waters at the Farakka Barrage near their mutual border.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has reservations over the Teesta water sharing with Bangladesh.

Hasina also met President Droupadi Murmu and Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar in New Delhi. On Tuesday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi called on Hasina. (ANI))
