Trump’s India Visit: Geopolitics & Strategy

US President Donald Trump’s India visit in the month of February 2020 clearly indicates that India’s alignment with the US is now complete. India’s Foreign Policy approach for the last many decades has been of multi-alignment with major partners in the most geopolitically important regions of the world. This particular visit with the visible camaraderie between the two leaders, President Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India, proves to be a landmark. The defining feature has been the signing and announcement of the ‘Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership’ at the end of Trump’s visit. The much-touted trade deal between the two countries, however, remains a task to be completed over the coming years.

In terms of geostrategy of the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), it marks the final acceptance of the US Indo-Pacific Region strategy for India. The practical framework or background of the Indo-Pacific strategy was already established when the US and India signed the Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement (LEMOA) and Communications, Compatibility Security Agreement (COMCASA) were signed in 2016 and 2018 respectively. The LEMOA facilitates the US with using Indian military bases in the region certain conditionalities and case by case basis. The COMCASA on the other hand, allows India to access and purchase the military communications systems of US origin like the C-17, C-130 and P8Is. A combination of these arrangements leads to increasing interoperability between the militaries of the United States and India.

Since the Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership has been signed, it accords India status of a Major US ally and this has ramifications for India in the larger international system. India’s clear and overt tilt towards the US may cause concerns in the Russian strategic circles but the trend clearly indicates that Indian military and weapons imports from the Russia are declining and India’s recent purchases have been from France, Israel and the United States. China has gradually emerged as a major partner for Russia, because of its multiple collaborative arrangements in the field of trade, transport, industry and finance.

For Beijing, the hope to draw India into its fold through Russia and multilateral agreements like the BRICS and SCO, will eventually fade with the increasing bonhomie between the two leaders (Trump and Modi). The resultant security and strategic apparatus in the IOR or the larger Indo-Pacific under the US leadership and India as a junior partner is directed towards the Chinese is no secret either.

With its subscription and eventual promotion of the terminology of the Indo-Pacific, a certain deviation from the Asia-Pacific of the Cold War years, India also has become part of the multilateral arrangements like the QUAD which provide tangible flesh and bone for the furtherance of the encirclement/containment of the Chinese. The leadership for the QUAD, again, comes from the United States, the other partners being Japan and Australia. The geographic location of Japan and Australia, which have been US allies since the Second World War and now India, indicates towards a certain geostrategic encirclement of China. Some international commentators have argued that the New Cold War has begun, and such new geopolitical alignments need to be factored in to make sense of the international system with Beijing as a major actor.

To conclude, the Trump visit, with all the pomp and glory aside, finally is a declaration from both New Delhi and Washington that US-India partnership is going to be a long-term affair. An important marker for South Asia from the visit is the de-hyphenation of the India-Pakistan connection from the US strategic mindset.

Indian efforts to make the international community realize that Pakistan’s support for the terrorism infrastructure in the subcontinent and outside have borne results. Donald Trump is perhaps the first president of the US to not visit both India and Pakistan on the same tour. The focus during the visit was solely on New Delhi and with that a clear signal that India is the only partner of importance for the US in the region. The expected outcome for Pakistan is that it will have to be content with the Chinese alliance, whereas India can still leverage its economic prowess and markets to maintain harmonious relations with China.

The benefits for India and US with the Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership will be manifold and will be decisive in the affairs of the Indo-Pacific as well as the Indian Ocean Region.

Cong Seeks Judicial Probe Into Northeast Delhi Violence

Congress leader Mukul Wasnik on Monday said his party demands an independent judicial inquiry into the Delhi violence under the supervision of a sitting judge of Supreme Court or High Court.

Referring to several controversial remarks and speeches made by Parvesh Verma, Kapil Mishra, Anurag Thakur, Congress leader Mukul Wasnik while addressing a press conference here said: “We demand that an FIR be registered against Union Minister Anurag Thakur, BJP leaders Kapil Mishra and Parvesh Verma (for their speeches during Delhi polls). We also demand independent judicial inquiry in the supervision of a sitting judge of the High Court or Supreme Court.”

Wasnik was part of the five-member Congress committee formed by its president Sonia Gandhi over Delhi violence. Wasnik said the committee submitted its report to the Congress president earlier today with certain recommendations and demands.

Casting aspersions on BJP, the Congress leader wondered if it was a ploy by the ruling party at the Centre to divert attention from several problems faced by the country.

“There are several problems before the country today. It appears to us that this may also be a conspiracy by BJP to divert attention from those,” he said.

Slamming Home Minister Amit Shah, the Congress leader said: “It was one of our main demands that Home Minister Amit Shah should resign but he has not taken any responsibility till today. We understand that there was no attempt from him to control the situation which occurred in Delhi.”

“Delhi Election recently took place. You would have heard that speech where Home Minister said to press the button so hard that its current is felt in Shaheen Bagh. What does it mean?” he questioned.

Expressing condolences to the families of people and officials who lost their lives in Delhi violence, Wasnik said: “While 690 FIRs have been registered for the riots on one side, till today, no FIR has been registered against Anurag Thakur, Kapil Mishra, Parvesh Verma. What does that mean? Does Government want peace and harmony in Delhi or not?”

He also demanded action against officials who failed to perform their duty.

Taking a jibe at Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, the Congress leader said the AAP leader has also failed to tackle the situation.

At least 53 people, including Ankit Sharma and police head constable Rattan Lal, were killed in the violence that erupted in the national capital recently. (ANI)

Post-Communal Violence

‘We Fought Rumour Mongering Post-Communal Violence’

Ashok Kumar, 48, a home guard posted as a bus marshal with Delhi Transport Corporation, took leave from work to go on a peace ride in riot-affected neighbourhood with a Muslim friend

I was unable to sleep for several nights during the time when communal violence was taking place in my neighbourhood (Yamuna Vihar in northeast Delhi). I kept thinking about the people who lost their lives, homes and their livelihoods in the mindless violence. This was particularly heartbreaking for people like me who spent their lives with Muslim neighbours in peace all my life. There can’t be anything more devastating for a city like Delhi where Hindus and Muslims live together for centuries.

I therefore took a day off and accompanied my neighbour Yusuf in a bike ride to the riot-hit localities. For, even after the bloodshed, some people had been indulging in rumor-mongering and this could lead to panic and further hatred among communities.

WATCH: ‘Left With The Clothes We Are Wearing’

This is why I felt it was my duty to be in the riot-hit area and send a message of peace. I stuck a poster of ‘Shantidoot’ on my shirt in the front and back and carried a national flag during the peace ride. As the board exams were postponed due to the violence, we visited some schools first so that the students can see that how communal harmony works and go home with good thoughts.

We spoke to whoever approached us and advised them to help us maintain peace in the city. I have so far gathered support of many people from both the communities. I am also asking for phone numbers of those who are interested in doing the same for the sake of peace in the country.

ALSO READ: ‘We Lost Our Child To Riots, Save Others’

I am planning to call all those interested in spreading a message of peace to ride with me in the entire northeast Delhi with a message of harmony. I will seek permission from the police and administration if required to carry on with such efforts on the streets. As soon as I get permission, I will call all those who are willing to volunteer and will roam the riot-hit localities with the message of peace.

In some of the suggestions I got from the people, one was very important. The residents of the violence-hit areas wanted to raise a community watch so that no such incidents can take place in future. I will not stop until I make sure that people are together against hatred and violence. Only common people like us suffer during such riots and our city gets defamed. I will take off from my job to do my duty for the country.

ED Arrests Yes Bank Founder Rana Kapoor, Questions Wife

Yes Bank founder Rana Kapoor, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), will be produced before a Mumbai Court on Sunday.

Kapoor was taken to the ED office for questioning on Saturday. He left the ED office along with the officials of the central probe agency this morning.

The agency had conducted raids at Kapoor’s residence located at ‘Samudra Mahal’ residential tower in Mumbai on Friday and registered a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) against him.

Wife of Yes Bank founder Rana Kapoor, Bindu Kapoor, on Sunday, arrived at Enforcement Directorate’s office here in Mumbai as her husband has been arrested by the probe agency under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

The ED officials are likely to quiz Bindu in connection with the case.

Rana Kapoor, who was taken to the ED office for questioning on Saturday, is scheduled to be produced before a Mumbai court.

On Thursday, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had said a moratorium has been imposed on Yes Bank, stressing that the bank’s financial capability has undergone a steady decline largely due to the inability of the bank to raise capital.

During the period of moratorium, the Yes Bank Ltd will not, without the permission in writing of the RBI, make in the aggregate, payment to a depositor of a sum exceeding Rs 50,000 lying to his credit in any savings, current or any other deposit account.

Former PDP Leader Launches New Party In Kashmir

Aiming to provide relief to the people “facing challenges since August 5 last year,” former People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Syed Altaf Bukhari launched his own new political party called the ‘Jammu and Kashmir Apni (own) Party’ (JKAP) in Srinagar on Sunday.

“It is a very happy occasion that finally we have come up with our party known as Apni Party. It puts a lot of responsibility on us as the expectations and challenges are huge. I assure people of Jammu and Kashmir that my will is strong to surmount these challenges in the interest of my people,” Bukhari told exclusively to ANI.

“After August 5, a lot has changed. People are in despair, tourism is reduced to zero and local industries have closed down. In that view, challenges are very huge. It is an endeavour to see how we can restore the semblance of these things,” he added.

The party was launched especially on the occasion of International Women’s Day.

Thirty-one political leaders are expected to join the party, including those from PDP, National Conference (NC) and the Congress, sources added.

Some of them include Dilawar Mir, Noor Mohd Sheikh, Yawar Mir, Zafar Iqbal Manhas and other former MLAs from PDP; Usman Majeed, Aijaz Khan, Mumtaz Khan and Shoaib Nabi Lone from Congress; Vijay Bakaya, Syed Asgar Ali and Kamal Arora from NC.

Informed sources said that the main focus of the party will be the politics of development and that the outfit will have representatives from Jammu and Kashmir, while it is also likely to include the Kashmiri Pandits.

The formation of a political outfit by a former PDP leader — with the inclusion of leaders from the PDP and NC, and representation from pan Jammu and Kashmir — could be seen as the beginning of the political process in the region outside of the “family rule party system.”

Further stressing on the focus of the newly-formed political party, Bukhari stressed that confidence-building measures between New Delhi and Srinagar needed to be restored. “People here are feeling the absence of credible voices, who can take up their issues and get them sorted,” he stressed.

Rana Kapoor’s Daughter Stopped From Leaving India

Yes Bank founder Rana Kapoor’s daughter Roshni, who was headed to London by the British Airways, was stopped from leaving the country at the Mumbai Airport on Sunday.

Earlier, Enforcement Directorate (ED) had issued a lookout notice against Rana Kapoor and his family including his wife Bindu Kapoor, daughters Rakhee Kapoor Tandon, Radha Kapoor and Roshni Kapoor.

Rana Kapoor was handed over to the Enforcement Directorate till March 11 by Mumbai’s Special Holiday Court on Sunday.

While making a request for five-day custody of Kapoor, the ED made a “verbal submission” to the court detailing the alleged financial irregularities of Yes Bank and DHFL.

As the ED believes that Kapoor took advantage of his position to benefit his daughters’ companies, hence custody of Kapoor is needed to investigate his and his daughters’ role in the matter, said the lawyer representing ED.

The agency argued in court that many family companies are involved and there are also some cases of quid pro quo made out of the case.

Rana Kapoor, who was taken to the ED office for questioning under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) on Saturday, was arrested in the wee hours of Sunday.

The agency had conducted raids at Kapoor’s residence located at ‘Samudra Mahal’ residential tower in Mumbai on Friday and registered a case under the PMLA against him.
