Centre’s Stance On Farmers May Lead To A Crisis: Pawar

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar on Thursday said the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Central Government’s “insensitive treatment of farmers” was pushing the country towards a crisis.

Interacting with the reporters, Pawar said, “Farmers have been protesting peacefully so far. But if they adopt any other means other than peace, then a serious crisis in the country might occur. The BJP-led Central Government will have to take responsibility for such a situation.”

Blaming the Centre for insensitive treatment towards farmers, the NCP chief further alleged that the representatives from different parties were prevented by the administration from meeting the farmers.

“There is no sensitivity in the Government. Even in British rule, people were not stopped by putting barriers of nails if they come on the streets to raise issues,” added Pawar.

Meanwhile, NCP leader Supriya Sule told ANI, “The condition in which they (farmers) are sitting there (Delhi borders) is not right. A solution needs to be found through discussions.”

She said that MPs from 10 parties visited Ghazipur border today. “The things we saw there were worrying. We were there just to meet farmers but we were not allowed. The atmosphere there is not in the interest of the nation. It will be our effort to see that a solution comes out,” said Sule.

Farmers have been protesting on the different borders of the national capital since November 26 last year against the three newly enacted farm laws: Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; the Farmers Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and farm Services Act 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020. The Indian short film on gender equality ‘Natkhat’ has brought India to the Oscar party after being highly acclaimed by international audiences.

Helmed by Shaan Vyas and written by Annukampa Harsh and Vyas, the movie was premiered on YouTube as part of the ‘We Are One: A Global Film Festival’. The Ronnie Screwvala produced film came out on June 2, 2020. (ANI)

Police Denies FIR Against Greta, Say Probing ‘Toolkit’ Post

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg has not been named in the FIR filed by Delhi Police and the case has been registered against unknown persons in “toolkit” social media post controversy.

Addressing a press conference here, Delhi Police Special Commissioner Praveer Ranjan said they had registered a case against creators of “toolkit” and no one had been named in the FIR.

“We have not named anybody in the FIR. It is only against the creators of the ‘toolkit’ which is a matter of investigation. Delhi Police will be investigating that case,” he said.

He was asked if the police have named Greta Thunberg in the FIR.

Ranjan said farmer protests at Delhi borders have been going on for days and Delhi Police has been closely monitoring several social media accounts.

“We have identified some 300 accounts spreading dissatisfaction and disharmony towards the Government of India. ‘Toolkit’ account was being run by a group of Khalistanis. They had decided to conduct a digital strike post the Republic Day incident,” he said.

“We have recovered a document about the planned execution. We have found out that is a copycat execution. As of now, we have registered cases against the authors of that account. The case has been handed over to the cyber cell. Investigations are underway,” he added.

Thunberg had posted “toolkit” in a tweet on Wednesday which she later deleted.

The teen climate activist had also extended support to protest by farmer unions on the borders of Delhi against the new farm laws.

“We stand in solidarity with the FarmersProtest in India,” she had said in a tweet.

The External Affairs Ministry had said on Wednesday that protests by farmer unions against new farm laws must be seen in the context of India’s democratic ethos and polity, and the efforts of the government and the concerned farmer groups to resolve the impasse.

It had said that the temptation of sensationalist social media hashtags and comments, especially when resorted to by celebrities and others, is neither accurate nor responsible. “

“Before rushing to comment on such matters, we would urge that the facts be ascertained, and a proper understanding of the issues at hand be undertaken,” the ministry said. (ANI)

Farmers Demand Restoration Of Internet At Protest Sites

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha on Thursday demanded the immediate reinstatement of Internet services at Delhi borders.

“The government’s efforts to suppress the voice of disagreement continue. Along with the agitating farmers, media persons and local people are facing a lot of troubles due to the internet ban,” the Samyukta Kisan Morcha said.

“Especially students are facing a big problem as their exams are coming soon. On one side the Government of India propagates the plans like Digital India, but on the other hand, the people of the country are being deprived of the Internet,” it added.

SKM alleges that the Centre wants to globally suppress the farmers’ protests by citing it as an internal matter.

“This movement is getting continuous support from the nation and the world. It is shameful that the government wants to suppress it by citing it as an ‘internal matter’. Those who are showing solidarity with the farmers are being trolled on social media, which is condemnable,” SKM stated.

SKM said that the movement is completely a farmers’ movement and we oppose all the baseless allegations against the farmers.

“This movement has been completely apolitical from the beginning and will remain apolitical. The leader of any political party is not allowed to speak from any stage of Samyukta Kisan Morcha. The support of political parties and leaders to this movement is welcomed, but in no case, the Samyukta Kisan Morcha’s stage will be allowed for political leaders,” the release stated. (ANI)

Onus On Pak To Create Terror-Free Environ: Army Chief

Responding to Pakistan army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa surprise peace overture in which he said “it is time to extend a hand of peace in all directions,” New Delhi said the onus is on Pakistan to create an environment free of terror.

Talking to reporters, the Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson said, “Our position is well-known. India desires normal neighbourly relations with Pakistan in an environment free of terror, hostility and violence. The onus is on Pakistan for creating such an environment.”

Well known for his anti-India rhetoric, sudden change in stance of Pak army chief’s position has surprised New Delhi. General Bajwa, while speaking at the graduation ceremony of Pakistan Air Force cadets was also quoted as saying, “Pakistan and India must also resolve the longstanding issue of Jammu and Kashmir in a dignified and peaceful manner as per the aspirations of people of Jammu and Kashmir and bring this human tragedy to its logical conclusion.”

India is maintaining its position that talks and terror can’t go together and there is no indication of any dialogue until Pakistan takes some concrete steps.

India which is now a non-permanent member of the UNSC has been asking international community to take action against countries backing and sponsoring proscribed terrorists like Hafeez Saeed, Lakhvi , Dawood Ibrahim and Maulana Masood Azhar.

Sources here also believe that talks are not possible until Pakistan stops cross-border infiltration and ceasefire violations.

The Pakistan Prime Minister has also launched an international smear campaign based on falsehood against India. Recently in an interview to ANI, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh said that he has informed the Centre that smuggling of weapons through drones has increased manifold.

Sources also believe that Pakistan is also attempting to add fuel to Khalistan movement in the backdrop of ongoing farmers’ agitation. (ANI)

Indian Diaspora In UK Reached A New High In 2020

2020 is a year that many would like to forget due to the coronavirus pandemic and the heavy toll it took in terms of lives lost, economies disrupted and everyday life upended across the globe, but it also saw the 1.5 million-strong Indian community in the UK reaching a new high: its members continued to feature in bad news, but there was more good news during the year.

It remains debatable whether Indians back home should celebrate when members of the diaspora who are born and bred abroad achieve something. They are citizens of various countries and most have a passing acquaintance with India and its realities. This is most vividly reflected in the British parliament, where despite growing numbers of Indian-origin MPs and lords, when it comes to defending India’s interests on sensitive issues, they are conspicuously absent or silent. Indian officials have long despaired over diaspora MPs rarely speaking for India on key issues, but are in the forefront to highlight their ‘Indian’ origins when it suits them.

India and the UK are historically entwined at various levels. But it is in the realm of politics that 2020 saw the near-mainstreaming of the community, with Prime Minister Boris Johnson putting together what Conservative party chairman James Cleverly called the “most desi government in British history” after the December 2019 election, with four MPs appointed to key cabinet posts.

It is a different matter that this does not necessarily mean India’s interests are defended in parliamentary debates, but in the long march of racism and representation, it is something of a landmark not only for the community but also Britain’s policies of multiculturalism and initiatives to encourage non-white representation in politics.

It is no longer rare to see chancellor Rishi Sunak batting for the Conservative party or the government and Labour’s Lisa Nandy countering in widely-watched mainstream news programmes. Sunak and home secretary Priti Patel have been lauded and pilloried in the news media just like any other British politician. The other two cabinet members – Alok Sharma and Suella Braverman – have received similar treatment. Labour’s shadow cabinet has also seen more members from the community, with Nandy, Preet Kaur Gill, Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi and Valerie Vaz.

This increased representation is clearly an advance from even a decade ago when the community representation in the House of Commons was mainly confined to Keith Vaz and Virendra Sharma. How much of this results in better, quantifiable relations between India and the UK remains to be seen.

Besides politics, 2020 also saw leading individuals from the community featuring prominently in mainstream discourse, such as Anand Menon on Brexit, and Devi Sridhar, Bharat Pankhania and Sunetra Gupta on Covid-19. Health professionals from the community were not only among major victims of Covid-19, but were also on the frontline treating patients across hospitals and other settings. Among the deceased was Gulshan Ewing, 92, the pioneering editor of women’s magazines. Hailing from a Parsi family in Mumbai, she was one of the first women editors of leading Indian publications since the mid-1960s, setting benchmarks in film journalism and focussing on women audience. Experts helping the UK government deal with the pandemic included Nobel laureate Venki Ramakrishnan and Lalita Ramakrishnan of the University of Cambridge. Among the first to receive the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine were Hari Shukla and his wife Ranjan.

The presence of the large diaspora with links with the homeland ensures that events and issues in India resonate on the streets of London and elsewhere. 2020 saw protests, demonstrations and petitions on issues such as the new laws on citizenship, farmers and Kashmir. As foreign secretary Dominic Raab said during his recent visit to New Delhi: “Your news is our news” because of the diaspora.

Members of the community continued to figure in crime and convictions, while proceedings to extradite several individuals continued during the year, including Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi and Sanjeev Chawla (who was escorted to New Delhi).

At the University of Cambridge, sociologist Manali Desai became the first head of a department in its 811-year history when she was appointed head of the department of sociology. Also, its department of chemistry was named after its alumnus, Yusuf Hamied of pharma major Cipla.

The Ealing Council in west London announced the renaming of part of Southall’s Havelock Road – named after Henry Havelock, general in the colonial army involved in suppressing the 1857 Uprising – as Guru Nanak Road from early 2021, following a public consultation.

On the cultural front, while the BBC’s six-part adaptation of Vikram Seth’s 1993 tome ‘A Suitable Boy’ received mixed reviews, the London Fashion Week – in a first – showcased the magic of sari as models sashayed wearing saris from various parts of India, and the British Fashion Council appointed actor Priyanka Chopra as its new ambassador. Mahatma Gandhi, who had close interaction with London and the British during his lifetime, continued to make news. His statues in London and Leicester became the focus of protests during the Black Lives Matter campaign. But an unnamed buyer surprised many by picking up Gandhi’s spectacles from his time in South Africa for £260,000 in a Bristol auction

Besides India emerging as the second biggest investor in the UK, 2020 also saw entrepreneur Karan Bilimoria elected president of the Confederation of British Industry, the representative body of 1.9 lakh UK companies employing nearly 7 million people. And Zuber Issa and Mohsin Issa, sons of immigrants from Gujarat, acquired retail giant Asda (valued at £6.8 billion), months after a new report co-produced by the Indian high commission highlighted the multi-billion-pound ‘diaspora effect’ in British business: over 65,000 companies are owned by British citizens of Indian origin.

The Covid-19 pandemic prevented Johnson from travelling to New Delhi for the Republic Day event, but a free trade agreement with India is stated to be one of the priorities as the post-Brexit UK tries to redefine its global role. There is much criticism of the slogan ‘Global Britain’, and platitudes continue to dominate public discourse of bilateral relations between India and the UK, but the fact remains that even UAE trades more with the UK than India. As former business secretary Vince Cable remarked some time ago, Britain no longer produces most of the things that India needs. Officials have nonetheless identified five sectors for a closer look in the post-Brexit UK: information and communications technology and services, food and drink, life sciences and chemicals, with early harvest pacts expected in 2021.

Union Budget 2021-22

Watch – ‘Health, Defence Important; What About Inflation?’

Common people have given a mixed response to Union Budget 2021-22. While some feel that there is little effort to hold back rising prices in Budget, there are others who feel the financial document has kept its focus on two biggest challenges before the country: outside threat on border and inside dangers of pandemic.

Although relief to senior citizens is appreciated, rise in petrol price has been a big concern as it will only lead to overall increase in commodity prices.
