8 Congress MLAs, Including Kamat, Lobo Likely To Join BJP Today

Ahead of joining the Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday, eight Congress MLAs, including former Goa CM Digambar Kamat and Leader of Opposition Michael Lobo met with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant at the Assembly Complex.

The eight MLAs who met with CM Sawant are Digambar Kamat, Michael Lobo, Delilah Lobo, Rajesh Phaldesai, Kedar Naik, Sankalp Amonkar, Aleixo Sequeira and Rudolf Fernandes.
After holding a meeting with Congress Legislature Party, Lobo told ANI that they “will join BJP”, however no official confirmation from the Sawant has come forward yet.

The development came amid the Congress leader Rahul Gandhi-led Bharat Jodo Yatra, which is being held to combat the BJP-led Centre and awaken the country’s people to the dangers of economic inequalities, social polarisation, and political centralization.

The Yatra includes Padayatras, rallies, and public meetings which will be attended by the senior Congress leaders including Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

Days ago on September 4, Gujarat Youth Congress President Vishwanathsinh Vaghela resigned from his post which is considered to be a major jolt for the party.

On September 2, party leader Rajinder Prasad, who is also the son of late Master Beli Ram Sharma from Nowshera, Rajouri, resigned from all posts and the primary membership of the party. Prasad blamed the ‘coterie’ system for being a reason for the ‘demise’ of the party.

In recent months, Rajinder Prasad and several high-profile leaders have quit Congress.

The exit of veteran leader Ghulam Nabi Azad from the Cong, months before the upcoming Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh Assembly polls, as well as the general elections in two years’ time, dealt a huge blow to party.

Jaiveer Shergill, who is a lawyer by profession and was one of the prominent ones among young Congress leaders, on August 24, tendered his resignation claiming that the vision of the decision-makers no longer was in sync with the aspirations of the youth.

Earlier this year in May, senior Cong leader Kapil Sibal, a prominent face of the G-23 group of dissenting leaders, resigned from the party and filed nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha elections as an independent candidate backed by the Samajwadi Party (SP).

Former Punjab Congress chief Sunil Jakhar too parted ways with the Cong in May this year. Former Union Law Minister Ashwani Kumar in February also resigned from Congress after a long association of 46 years with the party.

Back in May, Gujarat Patidar leader Hardik Patel had quit the party after he felt that he was being “ignored”. (ANI)

Official Language Hindi Unites Nation In Thread Of Unity: Shah

As the country observed Hindi Diwas on Wednesday, Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah said Hindi is the friend of all Indian languages and it “unites the whole nation in a thread of unity” as an official language.

The minister took to the micro-blogging site Twitter to express his views at the event and made it clear that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government is committed for the “parallel development” of all local languages including Hindi.
“Official language Hindi unites the nation in the thread of unity. Hindi is a friend of all Indian languages. Modi’s government is committed for the parallel development of all local languages including Hindi. I salute the great personalities who have contributed in the preservation and promotion of Hindi. Happy ‘Hindi Diwas’ to all,” Shah tweeted in Hindi.

The minister’s views came hours before taking part in the second All India Official Language Conference organized on the occasion of Hindi Diwas in Surat.

Every year Hindi Diwas is observed on September 14. The day is dedicated to the Hindi language after it was announced as the official language of the Union of India.

Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, had officially declared September 14 as the Hindi Diwas.

The Constituent Assembly of India declared Hindi, written in the Devanagari script, to be the official language of the Union of India on September 14, 1949. English is the second official language.

The decision of using Hindi as an official language of India was legalised by the Constitution of India on January 26, 1950.

Hindi was made one of the official languages in order to streamline government operations in a multilingual nation.

Spoken as a native language by 258 million people, Hindi is recognised as the fourth most spoken language in the world. (ANI)

EC Delists 86 Non Existent Unrecognised Political Parties; 253 Declared Inactive

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has delisted 86 “non-existent” Registered Unrecognized Political Parties (RUPPs), the poll body said on Tuesday.

An additional 253 RUPPs were declared as inactive.
“In continuation of the earlier action initiated on May 25, 2022, for enforcing due compliances by Registered Unrecognized Political Parties (RUPPs), the Election Commission of India led by Chief Election Commissioner, Rajiv Kumar and Election Commissioner Anup Chandra Pandey today further delisted 86 non-existent RUPPs and declared additional 253 as Inactive RUPPs,” said the press release.

As per statutory requirements under section 29A of the RP Act, every political party has to communicate any change in its name, head office, office bearers, address, and PAN to the Commission without delay.

Eighty Six RUPPs were found to be non-existent either after a physical verification carried out by the respective Chief Electoral Officers of concerned states/UTs or based on the report of undelivered letters/notices from the Postal Authority sent to the registered address of the concerned RUPP.

Significantly, the ECI had delisted 87 RUPPs in May and 111 RUPPs in June earlier this year.

This decision against 253 non-compliant RUPPs has been taken based on reports received from Chief Electoral Officers of seven states namely Bihar, Delhi, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh.

These 253 RUPPs have been declared inactive, as they have not responded to the letter/notice delivered to them and have not contested a single election either to the General Assembly of a State or the Parliament Election 2014 & 2019. These RUPPs have failed to comply with statutory requirements for more than 16 compliance steps since 2015 and are continuing to default.

It is also noted that of the above 253 parties, 66 RUPPs actually applied for a common symbol as per para 10B of the Symbol’s Order 1968 and did not contest the respective elections. It is pertinent to note that privilege of a common symbol is given to RUPP based upon an undertaking for putting up at least 5 per cent of total candidates with regard to said legislative assembly election of a State.

Possibility of such parties occupying the available pre-election political space by taking benefits of admissible entitlements without contesting elections cannot be ruled out. This also tends to crowd out the political parties actually contesting elections and also creates confusing situations for the voters, the statement said.

The Commission noted that the primary purpose of registration of political parties is contained in Section 29A which lists out privileges and advantages which accrue to an association once it gets registered as a political party and all such advantages and privileges are directly relatable to the said participation in the electoral processes.

Accordingly, the 13 (ii) (e) guidelines for registration of political parties issued by the Commission for the condition of registration, reads as follows: Declares that party must contest an election conducted by the Election Commission within five years of its registration and thereafter should continue to contest. (If the Party does not contest elections continuously for six years, the Party shall be taken off the list of registered parties).

The Commission is cognizant that compliances of the birth conditions, which are a combination of mandated and self-acknowledged provisions, are a sine qua non for maintaining financial discipline, propriety, public accountability, and transparency.

The compliances work as the building blocks of a transparency mechanism for informing the voters of the affairs of the political parties necessary for making informed choices. In the absence of required compliances, the electorate and the Election Commission get blindsided. Further all these stated regulatory requirements have a direct bearing on the Commission’s constitutional mandate of conducting free, fair and transparent elections.

In view of the foregoing, immediate corrective measures are warranted in the larger public interest as well as for the purity of electoral democracy. Therefore, the Commission, in the discharge of its mandate of ensuring a just, free, fair & transparent electoral process hereby directs that the 86 non-existent RUPPs, shall be deleted from the list of register of RUPPs and render themselves liable to be not entitled to have benefits under the Symbols Order, 1968.

253 RUPPs are marked as ‘Inactive RUPPs” in the register of RUPPs maintained by the commission under section 29A of the Representation of People Act, 1951, the statement said.

These 253 RUPPs shall not be eligible to avail of any benefit of the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968.

Any party aggrieved from this may approach the concerned Chief Electoral Officer/Election Commission within 30 days of the issue of this direction, said the ECI.

Of these 253 RUPPS, 66 RUPPs which sought a common symbol under para 10B in various elections but did not set up any candidates for the respective general elections, shall need to further explain, in addition to (point iii above), as to why further action as mandated in “para 10 b of the Symbols Order making them liable for such punitive action as the Commission may consider appropriate” should not be taken. What’s Stopping You From Investing In Manufacturing, Sitharaman Asks India Inc

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday sought to know the reasons for India Inc’s hesitance regarding investing in manufacturing even as she assured all possible support from the government to facilitate investments in the country.

“We will do everything to get industry coming and investing here…We have given PLI. I want to hear from India Inc, what’s stopping you,” the finance minister said while speaking at the Mindmine Summit.
Sitharaman said the government has taken a number of steps to make the business environment conducive.

The initiatives taken by the government to support industry include a reduction in corporate tax and the introduction of production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme to boost manufacturing.

“Since 2019, when I took charge of the finance ministry, I have been hearing industry doesn’t think it’s (environment) conducive. Alright, the tax rate was brought down. I keep defending the industry,” she said.

The finance minister pointed out that foreign direct investment (FDI) and foreign portfolio investment (FPI) have been rising in India even though domestic investors hold back on investment decisions.

“Countries and industries abroad think this is the place to be in now, at this time. FPI and FDI are coming. Stock market is so confident. Is it like Hanuman, and you don’t believe in your own capacity and strength,” the finance minister asked the Indian Inc. (ANI)

BJP Trying To Make Sonia PM Through Backdoor: Kejriwal

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday attacked BJP in poll-bound Gujarat and alleged that the party is trying to make Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi as the “Prime Minister through the backdoor” and “successor” to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Kejriwal was responding to a question about BJP leaders stating that social activist Medha Patkar would be AAP’s chief ministerial candidate in the Gujarat assembly polls.
“I have heard that BJP will make Sonia Gandhi as the PM candidate after PM Modi. Ask them what they have to say on this. Ask them that Kejriwal has alleged that you are going to make Sonia Gandhi PM candidate and the successor to PM Modi at the national level. What do they have to say on this? The BJP is trying to make Sonia Gandhi the PM of the country through the backdoor. Ask them this question,” Kejriwal said.

The BJP has sought to make Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) founder Medha Patkar’s past ties with AAP a poll issue in Gujarat. Party leaders have said that Patkar opposed Narmada project and have talked of “renewed ties” between her and AAP.

Kejriwal alleged that the BJP “has not done anything” for the development of Gujarat and claimed it has “no programme for the next five years”.

Kejriwal also claimed that the Congress party is “finished” in Gujarat. “Congress is finished. You should stop taking their questions. People no more care about their questions,” Kejriwal said in response to a query.

The AAP leader has earlier urged the people not to “waste their votes” on Congress. After its victory in the held Punjab Assembly elections earlier this year, AAP is seeking to expand its footprint in other states.

Gujarat will face assembly polls later this year. (ANI)

China Promoting Taliban 2.0 For Better Business Deals In Afghanistan

China is currently engaged in pampering the Taliban, which finds itself in a state of diplomatic isolation. Its focus is on business with hopes of a better deal.

It is towards this end that China is walking the extra mile to offer a helping hand to the Taliban regime firstly in the matter of travel ban exemptions, and secondly, in grappling with its economic and humanitarian crisis, reported Al Arabiya Post.
China’s recent efforts to promote and support the Taliban 2.0 regime indicate that it is getting ready to recognize the government currently in place in Afghanistan.

On the one hand, it is building a case for international recognition of the Taliban and for the continuance of the waiver of the travel ban on Taliban leaders.

On the other hand, it is engaged in what is much more than business and cultural diplomacy to broaden its footprint in Afghanistan.

The state-run Communist Party of China (CPC) media has, in recent months, run a concerted campaign to show how the Taliban 2.0 have fairly handled the security situation and taken steps to improve the economy in Afghanistan, reported Al Arabiya Post.

These media report also highlight the contribution of China and its companies in bringing prosperity to the country. Business activity combined with cultural diplomacy suggests that China is getting ready to recognise Taliban 2.0.

At the forefront of this “Taliban is good” campaign is the CPC mouthpiece, Global Times (GT), which under editor in Chief Hu Xijin launched the “wolf warrior” communication strategy.

GT spread the ‘word’ that people across Afghanistan are saying that the security situation has improved and, violence had declined since the Taliban seized power. It, however, conceded that “tribal culture” still holds great sway in the Taliban’s governing style while hastening to add that their administrative capabilities are “comparatively more advanced.”

Moreover, some media reports indicate that some progress has been made on Chinese investments and reconstruction projects. Chinese businessmen like Yu Minghui, who have stayed put after the US-led NATO’s withdrawal, have reaped benefits. He has four steel processing lines, reported Al Arabiya Post.

The China Town, a 10- storey building is the hub of Chinese business activity. An industrial estate is coming up in Kabul suburbs as the first Sino-Afghan joint venture at a cost of USD 216 million.

Also, there is talk of extending the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor into Afghanistan and beyond. China has exempted 98 per cent of its Afghan buys from import duties. China Metallurgical Group will soon start exploration and extraction at the Aynak copper mine. It is the biggest copper mining project in the country. As of now, China’s economic footprint is steadily expanding across Afghanistan, reported Al Arabiya Post.

To ensure that it is business as usual in Kabul, China has chosen to keep quiet on the rights of ordinary women and distanced itself from the campaign of global human rights activists against the raw deal Afghan women and school-going girls have been getting.

China is also pushing its cultural diplomacy befitting its position as the third largest trading partner of Afghanistan after Pakistan and Iran. It has deputed scholars to help protect Afghanistan’s cultural heritage.

The current focus is on the historical relics at the Mes Aynak copper mine (Logar Province) and the UNESCO heritage site, Bamyan Valley. (ANI)
