Chinese President Xi Jinping

Xi’s Reshuffle Ensures Direct Control On Politics, Military, Economy

At the annual gathering of China’s People’s Congress, which concluded Monday, Xi introduced a series of sweeping changes in the country’s regulatory framework, allowing the party’s top leaders to assert more direct control over financial policy and bank regulation.

Daisuke Wakabayashi and Claire Fu writing in the Australian publication, The Age said that the revamp confirms what many in China already know: Whether it is politics, the military or the economy, all roads lead to Xi.

Moreover, the 2,952 delegates of the national legislature endorsed Xi for a rare third term as president. There was not a single dissenting vote.

On Friday, the 2,952 delegates of the national legislature endorsed Xi for a rare third term as president. There was not a single dissenting vote, said Wakabayashi and Fu.

“It’s very consistent with what Xi Jinping has been rolling out over the past 10 years,” said Max Zenglein, chief economist at the Mercator Institute for China Studies in Berlin. “Whenever he’s confronted with a problem, the solution is greater centralisation to the party.”

China is confronting an economy lacking the dynamism of the past and teetering from a real estate sector in crisis and local governments overrun with debt, reported The Age.

Xi continues to reshape China’s business climate, steering the world’s second-largest economy away from the free-market policies that underpinned its ascent.

While past Chinese leaders sought to maintain a buffer between the party and the private sector, Xi has erased those lines and made clear that businesses are there to advance the party’s agenda, said Wakabayashi and Fu.

In what appeared to be a precursor to the structural changes in the financial regulatory bureaucracy, China’s top anti-graft watchdog also published a not-so-veiled warning to bankers last month. It said it would “seriously investigate and deal with the people who neglect the party’s leadership in financial work and state-owned enterprises.”

Echoing the message of “common prosperity,” one of Xi’s hallmark slogans to narrow the wealth gap in Chinese society, the watchdog said bankers should embrace the party’s values and avoid the ideologies of the “financial elite.”

Notably, Bao Fan, a prominent investment banker and chief executive of China Renaissance Holdings, vanished last month.

Last month, China’s top prosecutor charged Tian Huiyu, the former president of China Merchants Bank, one of the country’s biggest commercial lenders, with abuse of power and insider trading.

The pointed rhetoric, targeted oversight and crackdowns on high-profile figures are reminiscent of China’s so-called rectification campaign of the past few years in the technology sector. This resulted in huge fines, the upending of business strategies and tycoons driven underground, reported The Age.

Meanwhile, China’s legislature, known as the National People’s Congress, approved a proposal to create a new regulatory body called the State Bureau of Financial Supervision and Administration to oversee China’s 400 trillion yuan, or USD US57 billion (USD 85.3 billion), financial system.

Analysts say this latest campaign to clean up the financial sector is also rooted in growing concern about the adequacy of the country’s financial regulation, which had been called into question in recent years by a series of missteps and scandals that tested the party’s ability to maintain order, said Wakabayashi and Fu. Imran's Motorcade Enters Islamabad After Toll Plaza Spat

Imran’s Motorcade Enters Islamabad After Toll Plaza Spat

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan’s motorcade has entered Islamabad after a brief interruption at the federal capital’s toll plaza, where capital police barred some of the former prime minister’s security vehicles from entering the city, reported Geo News.

PTI chief Khan is to appear in Toshakhana case in Islamabad today. Meanwhile, containers have been placed around judicial complex and Section 144 has been imposed in federal capital as PTI supporters have gathered around the judicial complex.
A district and sessions court in the federal capital will shortly take up the Toshakhana case against Khan — who was ousted in April last year — amid a high-security alert in and around the Federal Judicial Complex in G-11, reported Geo News.

Khan will appear before Additional Session Judge Zafar Iqbal in the case after he issued the former prime minister’s non-bailable arrest warrants as he had repeatedly refused to show up, with his counsel citing “security threats”.

The PTI chief, embroiled in several cases since his ouster, left for Islamabad from his Zaman Park residence in Lahore to appear before the court — after skipping several hearings.

On the way, three speeding cars in the Khan’s escort overturned around Chakwal’s Kallar Kahar; however, no one suffered serious injuries in the accident. The passengers were reported to be PTI workers from Hafizabad, reported Geo News.

Ahead of Khan’s arrival at Islamabad’s Judicial Complex, the area has been put on high security to ensure law and order and avoid any untoward situations — as happened last month.

There is a heavy security presence in Islamabad, Pakistan. Former Pakistan PM Imran Khan is scheduled to appear before a court in Islamabad in connection with the hearing into the Toshakhana case.

But as Khan was en route to the capital, the Punjab Police resumed an operation at the PTI chief’s residence, broke into his house, and arrested several party workers in the act, reported Geo News.

In response, the former prime minister said it was “clear” that despite having gotten “bail” in the cases lodged against him, the Pakistan Democratic Movement-led government intends to arrest him.

“Despite knowing their malafide intentions, I am proceeding to Islamabad & the court bec[ause] I believe in rule of law. But ill intent of this cabal of crooks shd be clear to all.”

“It is also obvious now that the entire siege of Lahore was not about ensuring I appear before the court in a case but was intended to take me away to prison so that I am unable to lead our election campaign,” he added.

In another tweet, he added: “Meanwhile Punjab police have led an assault on my house in Zaman Park where Bushra Begum is alone. Under what law are they doing this?”

“This is part of London Plan where commitments were made to bring absconder Nawaz Sharif to power as quid pro quo for agreeing to one appointment,” he added.

Earlier, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) earlier today stopped the police from arresting the deposed prime minister in the Toshakhana case — despite Khan resisting arrest for several days.

Under the rules governing “Toshakhana” — a Persian word meaning “treasure house” — government officials can keep gifts if they have a low worth, while they must pay a dramatically reduced fee to the government for extravagant items.

The Toshakhana is under the microscope ever since the emergence of the allegations that Imran Khan purchased the gifts he received as prime minister at throwaway rates and sold them off in the open market for staggering profits.

In October last year, the former prime minister was barred from holding public office after the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) found him guilty of unlawfully selling gifts from foreign dignitaries and heads of state.

The 70-year-old cricketer-turned-politician was accused of misusing his 2018 to 2022 premiership to buy and sell gifts in state possession that were received during visits abroad and worth more than Rs140 million (USD 635,000).

The gifts included watches given by a royal family, according to government officials, who have alleged previously that Khan’s aides sold them in Dubai.

The gifts included seven wristwatches, six made by watchmaker Rolex, and the most expensive a “Master Graff limited edition” valued at 85 million Pakistani rupees (USD 385,000).

The election commission’s order had said Imran stood disqualified under Article 63(1)(p) of the Constitution.

Following the order, the election watchdog moved the Islamabad sessions court and sought criminal proceedings against him — and the PTI chief has missed several hearings. (ANI)

Amritpal Singh's wife Kirandeep Kaur

Internet Suspended In Punjab Under Operation To Arrest Amritpal

Mobile Internet services have been suspended in several districts of Punjab until 12 noon on Sunday, State police said today after launching an operation to arrest chief of suspected pro-Khalistan outfit ‘Waris Punjab De’, Amritpal Singh and his aides.

“All mobile internet services, all SMS services (except banking & mobile recharge) and all dongle services provided on mobile networks, except the voice call, in the territorial jurisdiction of Punjab shall be suspended from March 18, (12:00 hours) to March 19, (12:00 hours) in the interest of public safety,” Punjab’s department of Home Affairs and Justice said.
The police action came almost over three weeks after Amritpal’s supporters clashed with police personnel at the Ajnala police station on the outskirts of Amritsar last month, demanding the release of one of Amritpal’s close aide- Lovepreet Toofan.

On February 23, thousands of his supporters, stormed the Ajnala police station, flashing swords and high-calibre firearms, threatening the police with dire consequences if they did not release Lovepreet Toofan, who was arrested for allegedly assaulting and abducting a man.

The supporters, brandishing swords and guns broke through police barricades erected outside the Ajnala police station.

The police later said “in the light of the evidence presented”, it has been decided that Lovepreet Singh Toofan will be discharged.

Lovepreet Singh was released from jail on February 24 following orders of a court in Ajnala on an application by the police.

Reacting to the incident, chief minister Bhagwant Mann said that these “1000 people” don’t represent Punjab, and alleged that they are “funded by Pakistan” to disrupt peace in the state. (ANI)

Rajasthan Locals Celebrate After Gehlot Announces New Districts

Rajasthan Locals Celebrate After Gehlot Announces New Districts

Locals in Rajasthan celebrated on Saturday after Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Friday announced the formation of 19 new districts in the state, taking the total number of districts to 50.

While speaking in the assembly, Gehlot said, “With the formation of 19 new districts, the state now has a total of 50 districts.”
Water supply minister Mahesh Joshi says that the decision of the Chief Minister to create new districts is historic and this will not only speed up the development of Rajasthan but will also bring a lot of change in geographical terms.

According to the Deputy Leader of the Opposition Rajendra Rathore, these districts were borne out of the infighting of the ruling party. More than a dozen MLAs had threatened to resign and due to the infighting, the formation of these new districts was announced.

Rathore said, “this announcement was made without a detailed study, financial resources, and infrastructure.”

He added, “It is wrong to convert districts like Jodhpur and Jaipur into separate districts. If the distances and boundaries of the districts were also observed before this decision, then perhaps such steps would not have been taken. Through this announcement, their intention is to make electoral gains.”

BJP leader Vasundhra Raje slammed the Rajasthan government’s decision and said, “Many important facts have been ignored in the process of creating new districts. Because of this, instead of the ease that would result from the formation of new districts, the public would have to face administrative complications.”

She added, “The new announcements of the Congress government are just an attempt to fulfill their personal political interests. In this effort, he has put the entire economic system of Rajasthan at stake. The consequences of this will have to be borne by the people and the state in the years to come.” (ANI)

A Data-Based Study Is Needed On Rising Heart Attacks

A Data-Based Study Is Needed On Rising Heart Attacks

Dr Vishwas Sharma says rising number of heart attacks in the middle-age group is worrying but wild speculations about its causes are equally dangerous. His views:

The recent rise in heart attacks or deaths caused by it among seemingly healthy individuals is not limited to India. This trend is being witnessed across the globe. However, in the absence of an evidence-based study or data collection, nothing could be said conclusively about the reasons behind these cases.

Having said this, medical researchers are obliged to hazard an educated guess about the few possibilities before us based on a pattern seen in these heart conditions. First, most of these cases are reported among people in their middle-age. So it can be related to mid-life problem.

Second, all these cases are happening when the country has survived two deadly waves of Covid-19 and a large scale vaccination programme. As I said before although these conditions are before us, there is no evidence-based link between the two. These are merely two facts, where no co-relation has yet been established. It is for the medical research fraternity to find out.

So, these facts that I presented are still in the realm of possibilities. Whether this trend is a post-Covid complication or related to the vaccines, we do not know for sure. Other areas that are required to be studied are: 1) Did the victims of these heart condition ever contract Covid-19; 2) which vaccine did they take; and 3) were the victims suffering from a co-morbidity that could make them more vulnerable?

ALSO READ: ‘For A Shipshape Heart, Drop Dumbbell & Try Yoga’

I usually keep myself updated on ongoing scientific studies and to the best of my knowledge thus far India or any other country lack scientific evidence on the cause of increasing deaths due to cardiac arrest. I suggest the government agencies to collect more data of victims, their profiles, their vaccination status and so on. It is best to arrest this unhealthy trend early, and a study can prepare us better to educated people of the malaise setting in.

Devoid of data, research and evidence on the causes of these heart attacks, it will be irresponsible on the part of medical fraternity and the media to prescribe any solutions to our countrymen. I may talk on the pathological dimensions of heart attack and its fallouts but that is not going to help.

One good thing that has taken place is that people are now talking about it, also debating it. Part of the reason was that the victims of the heart conditions were celebrities like Sushmita Sen, who survived, Sidharth Shukla, Raju Srivastava, Singer KK etc. This made people sit up and take note.

Now it becomes incumbent on Health ministry or medical research agencies to take it further. The government should commission research on related data and profile of victims, their clinical history to unravel the underlying causes. As an immunologist, I can only advocate preventive measures. A proven healthy lifestyle and food habits will certainly go a long way in averting such tragedies.
