Cong Is Digging Its Own Grave: Rajnath

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday took a swipe at the Congress saying that the party is not digging the Bharatiya Janata Party’s grave as it says, but its own.

“Every day youth leaders of the Congress are launched. They have stooped so low that they say, Modiji, your grave will be dug; they themselves are digging their own graves. The more mud Congress throws, the more the lotus will bloom,” Singh said, addressing a rally after launching the second Vijay Sankalp Rath Yatra at Nandgad village in Belagavi.
Singh was speaking after inaugurating the ‘Vijay Sankalp Yatra’ in the poll-bound state of Karnataka.

He said that Prime Minister Modi believes that there is surely a cure for corruption unlike former PM Rajiv Gandhi who used to say that “corruption is incurable”.

Hitting out at the Congress’ Bharat Jodo Yatra which concluded in December last year, Singh said, “I want to ask from where Bharat (India) is broken. They (Congress) are only doing politics.”

However, lauding the BJP Parliamentary Board member and former Chief Minister of Karnataka BS Yediyurappa’s contributions, the Defence Minister urged the people of Karnataka to fulfil the former BJP chief minister’s dream of achieving a clear majority in Karnataka in the upcoming state assembly polls.

“Yeddyurappaji has served the party and the state as a ‘son of the soil’ for several decades. Like PM Modi, Yeddyurappa also has the same desire that the BJP government should be formed again in Karnataka for five years so that the state can be made the number one state of South India in the next five years. Yeddyurappa ji is in most important parliamentary committee now,” he further said.

Singh further said that the party could never forget the services offered by Yediyurappa to Karnataka.

The Union minister said Yediyurappa had to step down as the chief minister due to health-related issues.

Current CM of the state Basavaraj Bommai succeeded Yediyurappa as the Karnataka chief minister in July 2021.

Singh also urged the people to take ‘Sankalp’ to make the BJP government in the state by a two-thirds majority.

On the occasion Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi and state BJP president Nalinkumar Kateel were also present.

Earlier in the day Defence Minister arrived in Karnataka’s Belagavi to inaugurate the ‘Vijay Sankalp Yatra’ in the poll-bound state.

Earlier on Wednesday, party President JP Nadda flagged off the ‘Vijay Sankalp Yatra’ in Karnataka’s Chamarajanagar.

Meanwhile, Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah will also flag off two ‘Vijay Sankalp Rath Yatra’ and inaugurate various projects in his day-long visit to poll-bound Karnataka on March 3.

He also hailed PM Modi’s leadership in the country and said, “Now India is becoming the world’s fastest-growing economy, India has also become the world’s fifth largest economy. Our Prime Minister provided free ration facilities to 80 crore needy people in the country. It has been considered the world’s largest food security scheme. Recently, a report has appeared that India has saved about 39 lakh people from dying in its vaccination program.”

Talking about the ‘success’ of the Digital India scheme, the union minister said that 782 crore UPI transactions were worth 12.82 lakh crore in the country in December last year.

“Today the common citizen is doing digital transactions through UPI. Only in the month of December, there have been 782 crore UPI transactions worth 12.82 lakh crore in the country. When digital payments were promoted, Congress leaders used to make fun of how poor people of the country would pay through mobile,” he added.

Commenting on the election results of three Northeastern states, he said that these results would have a bearing on the elections in Karnataka.

“In Tripura and Nagaland, the BJP is forming the government again, whereas, in Meghalaya, the number of seats won by BJP legislators has increased,” Singh added.

Speaking about the government’s achievement on the Defence front, he said, “Recently, when Air India placed an order for 470 aircraft with Boeing and Airbus, it was the biggest order in the aviation industry. All aerospace and software companies working in Karnataka will also benefit from this order.”

With the mission to win over 150 seats in the 224 member-Assembly seats, the ruling party is going to start its mega-election campaign.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, party national president JP Nadda and former Karnataka Chief Minister Yeddyurappa along with many other national and state leaders of BJP will join the ‘Vijay Sankalp Yatra’ to reach out to the voters of the state.

The party has earlier launched two big campaigns in Karnataka – ‘Booth Vijay Abhiyan’ and ‘Vijay Sankalp Abhiyan’ and now it is going to start this campaign in the name of ‘Vijay Sankalp Yatra’ in the state from March 1 to ensure the victory of the party. (ANI)

Global Decision-Making Doesn’t Reflect Today’s Politics: G20

Global Decision-Making Doesn’t Reflect Today’s Politics: G20

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday said that the decision-making at multilateral organizations like the United Nations doesn’t reflect the realities of present-day politics, economics, or aspirations of the people at the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (G20FMM) held here.

Highlighting the flaws in the global decision-making process at the United Nations while addressing the foreign delegates at G20FMM, he said, “Current global architecture is in its 8th decade. The number of members of the UN has quadrupled in this period. It neither reflects today’s politics, economics, demographics or aspirations. Since 2005, we have heard sentiments for reform being expressed at the highest level. But as we all know, these have not materialised. The reasons are no secret either. The longer we put it off, the more the credibility of multilateralism stands eroded. Global decision-making must be democratised if it has to have a future.”
The G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting commenced with a minute’s silence observed for those who lost their lives in the recent earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.

“Before I commence proceedings, let us observe a minute of silence in memory of the many who lost their lives in the devastating earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria. Our deepest condolences to the bereaved families,” said Jaishankar.

The EAM began the first session of the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting by reminding foreign delegates that “this grouping bears an exceptional responsibility.”

“We first came together in the midst of a global crisis and are today, once again, actually confronting multiple ones. These include the impact of the Covid pandemic, concerns of fragile supply chains, the knock-on effects of ongoing conflicts, anxiety of debt crises and the disruption of climate events. In considering these issues, we may not all always be of one mind. In fact, there are some matters of sharp differences of opinions and views. Yet, we must find common ground and provide direction, because that is what the world expects of us,” said Jaishankar.

Speaking on the future of multilateralism, he said, “As we look ahead, there are both pressing and more systemic challenges that we all confront. The future of multilateralism depends very much on our ability to strengthen it in a changing world.”

He focussed on developing cooperation to mitigate the food crisis magnified by recent events.

“Food and energy security are immediate anxieties, magnified by recent events. But they do have long-term repercussions and solutions. And development cooperation is part of that larger solution that we are deliberating upon today,” said Jaishankar.

He also discussed the agendas for today’s discussions that included challenges of food, fertilizers and fuel security that are make-or-break issues for developing countries.

“We heard their concerns directly in January this year through the Voice of Global South Summit. Such issues should not be relegated to the periphery of the international discourse. They are infact, crucial to the global economy and must be treated as such. Indeed, we urge that they be central to any decision-making. Along with that, the world must also strive for more reliable and resilient supply chains. Recent experience has underlined the risks of being dependent on limited geographies,” said the EAM.

He said that G20 group have individually and collectively an obligation to contribute to international growth and prosperity, adding that these can be implemented through sustainable partnerships and goodwill initiatives.

“On its part, India has undertaken development projects in 78 countries and has actively encouraged exchanges and capability building. During the Covid pandemic, we made a conscious effort at contributing to global solutions even while looking after our own. Today’s situation demands that we continue to live up to our international responsibilities. The G20 must be sensitive to all our partners’ priorities and economic concerns, especially those more vulnerable. We must ensure demand-driven and sustainable development cooperation based on country ownership and transparency. Respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity are essential guiding principles for such cooperation,” added Jaishankar.

He reaffirmed that G20 Foreign Ministers can send a collective message of its determination to address the complex challenges that the world face at this juncture, adding, “I look forward to our deliberations in this regard.” (ANI)

‘Renaming Mughal Gardens Has A Communal Perspective’

‘Renaming Mughal Gardens Has A Communal Perspective’

Ahmer Khan, a heritage tour leader in Delhi, says changing names of the historical monuments and places goes against constitutional values. His views:

Changing the name of a place or structure is actually rejecting the entire heritage of a particular era of the past. It has multi-dimensional impact; it affects the collective memory of people at many levels. Renaming our recorded heritages, as in the case of Mughal Gardens lately, bears an absurd reasoning where destroying the symbols of a troubled past is seen as course correction.

The culture and traditions of a society develop over a time frame; from clothing to speech and architecture, these are all part of the same heritage. Condemning them pushes an entire community into a sense of guilt for a culture that is part of their identity. It puts a stain on their culture.

Take for example the intent behind the demand of setting up a Renaming Commission through a PIL in the Supreme Court. The PIL noted that while Mughal Garden was renamed as Amrit Udyan, the government had done nothing to rename the roads named after invaders. Mercifully, the honourable court dismissed the petition, stating that India cannot be a prisoner of the past. This exactly my argument is all about.

The role of an ideal state is to preserve our cultural heritage. An example of this can be seen in Indonesia, where despite being a Muslim-majority nation, it has embraced its Hindu symbols and temples as part of their culture and heritage. Spain can be another example where they have preserved their Muslim heritage despite being a Christian majority nation. If Indonesia and Spain can preserve their heritage, why can’t India?

ALSO READ: ‘Renaming of Mughal Gardens Is Religio-Nationalism’

An argument of decolonisation is often used in defence of changing names. Decolonizing is necessary, but it must be done with honesty at every level. This requires institutions to become more welfare-oriented and not exploitative as was the norm in colonial phase. When the last person in the line is empowered and perceives to be empowered, then only will decolonization be implemented in its true sense.

Has Connaught Place really been decolonized by being renamed Rajiv Chowk? Has the character of the oppressive power changed there? You will find out that even after working in a shop for more than ten years, its employees cannot afford to buy anything for themselves from that shop; nor can they ever eat in the restaurant where they cook or serve food for years. You will find children and women begging at Rajiv Chowk. So changing a name didn’t change its oppressive character.

This government has selectively chosen Rajpath and Mughal Gardens for changing names. India Gate remains as it is. This shows the intent of the government that it has nothing to do with decolonisation. The case of the Mughal gardens is even more ridiculous, as this garden has little connection with the Mughals.

The politics of name-changing has been carried out by almost all political parties but there is a fundamental difference from its current attempts. The groups that changed the names of places based on the names of their heroes or symbols, emerging from Left or socialist ideology, have had a logical historical perspective behind it, which negates the symbols and names of injustice and oppression. This is debatable. But at its core, it is not a communal or fascist intent, merely an attempt to establish the identity of their ideological symbols.

On the other hand, the intent behind the current government’s name-changing is seen as majority appeasement and communal, with no historical perspective. It is built on empty rhetoric, aggressive and irrational nationalism, and divisive communal arguments, pushing the country further towards a mobocracy.
