Taiwan Calls China Bully Next Door

Taiwan on Saturday termed China as the “bully next door” and said that Beijing should hold its own election instead of shaping Taipei.

“The #PRC has made it clear it wants to shape #Taiwan’s coming national election. Well, it’s up to our citizens to decide, not the bully next door. Look, #China should hold its own elections; I’m sure its people would be thrilled,” Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry said on microblogging site X.

This came hours after the People’s Republic of China reportedly crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait.

Taiwan on Saturday said it has detected 42 warplane incursions into its air defence zone since China announced the launch of military drills, the country’s Defence Ministry said.

“Since 0900 (UTC+8) today (Aug. 19), the R.O.C. Armed Forces detected 42 PLA aircraft (including KJ-500, Y-9, J-10, J-11, J-16, SU-30 etc.), 26 of which crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait. Additionally, the PLA aircraft conducted joint combat patrol with 8 PLAN vessels,” Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence said on X.

“The R.O.C. Armed Forces are closely monitoring the situation with our ISR system and have deployed CAP aircraft, naval vessels, and land-based missile systems in response,” it added.

Earlier in the day, the Taiwan Work Office of the Communist Party of China Central Committee released a statement on Vice President William Lai’s “stopover” in the US.

An official of the Taiwan Work Office of the Communist Party of China Central Committee on Saturday strongly condemned the new provocative move by Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to further collude with the United States, Xinhua News agency reported.

The official made the remarks in response to Lai Ching-te’s “stopover” through the United States, describing the move as Lai’s shameless efforts to cling to US support to seek “Taiwan independence.”

The DPP authorities have stubbornly adhered to the separatist stance of “Taiwan independence,” continuously made provocations by relying on the United States to seek “Taiwan independence,” and willingly acted as a pawn for anti-China forces in the United States and in the West to contain China, the official said, adding that they have “betrayed the interests of the Chinese nation.”

Lai has stubbornly stuck to the “Taiwan independence” stance, the official said, adding that Lai’s latest “stopover” through the US was a disguise he used to sell out the interests of Taiwan in order to seek gains in the local election through dishonest moves, as per Xinhua News agency.

Lai’s deeds have proven that he is an out-and-out troublemaker who will push Taiwan to the dangerous brink of war and bring deep troubles to Taiwan compatriots, the official said.

“We are willing to create ample room for peaceful reunification, but we will not allow any space for ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist activities in any form,” Xinhua News agency quoted the official saying. (ANI)

Rahul Rides Bike To Ladakh’s Pangong Lake On Father Rajiv’s Birthday

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi embarked on a bike ride to Pangong Lake in Ladakh on Saturday to celebrate his father and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s birthday on August 20, officials said.

Taking to the social media platform, Instagram, Rahul Gandhi wrote, “On our way to Pangong Lake, which my father used to say, is one of the most beautiful places in the world.”

This is Rahul’s first visit to Ladakh since Jammu and Kashmir was bifurcated into two Union Territories, Ladakh and J-K, following the removal of Articles 370 and 35 (A) on August 5, 2019.

Rahul Gandhi arrived in Leh to begin his two-day visit to the Union Territory on Thursday but his tour was extended till August 25, party sources said.

On Friday he interacted with youth in Leh.

The source further said that he will also watch a football match in Leh. Rahul has been a footballer player during his college days.

He will also participate in the meeting of the 30-member Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC)-Kargil elections on August 25.

Congress and National Conference have forged a pre-poll alliance against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the Kargil council polls scheduled to be held on September 10.

Although the Congress MP visited Srinagar and Jammu twice earlier this year, he, however, did not travel to Ladakh.

In January, the Congress leader visited Jammu and Srinagar during his Bharat Jodo Yatra. Again on a personal visit in February, he visited the Gulmarg ski resort. (ANI)

Taiwan China

China Launches Military Ops As Stern Warning To Taiwan

China launched joint air and sea patrols and military exercises around Taiwan on Saturday which Beijing has termed as a “stern warning” to “Taiwan independence” separatists against colluding with foreign elements, Xinhua News Agency reported.

This exercise came as an angry response to Taiwan Vice President William Lai’s recent “stopover” in the US.

Xinhua cited Shi Yi, a spokesperson for the Eastern Theater Command of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army as saying that the patrols and exercises are meant to train the coordination of military vessels and aeroplanes and their ability to seize control of air and sea spaces.

The armed forces’ ability to fight in real combat conditions will be tested, Shi said, adding that the patrols and exercises serve as a stern warning to the collusion of “Taiwan independence” separatists with foreign elements and their provocations, as per China’s state media.

Taiwan’s Defence Ministry in a statement condemned China’s latest military drills near the island and called it “irrational provocative behaviour.”

The ministry also said that it will dispatch appropriate troops to respond in accordance with the “Regulations on the Handling of Emergencies during the Period of Regular Combat Readiness of the National Army” to defend freedom, democracy, and the sovereignty of the Republic of China with practical actions.

Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense pointed out that in recent years, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has continued to send aircraft and ships to harass and harass, which has caused substantial damage to regional security.

“Launching a military exercise under pretext this time not only does not help the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait but also highlights its militaristic mentality and confirms the hegemonic nature of military expansion,” the statement read.

“The Ministry of National Defence emphasized that in the face of repeated advances by the Communist army, all officers and soldiers of the national army are ready to fight, uphold the strong will of “preparing for war, not seeking war, responding to war, not avoiding war”, and have the ability, determination, and confidence to ensure national security,” it read.

Taiwan called on the people of the country to play a solid backing and build a consensus of unity when the situation on both sides of the strait is severe. The military and civilians work together to build a key force for defence operations and jointly protect the beautiful homeland.

Earlier, when Lai visited the US, at that time also China condemned the trip and vowed to take “strong measures”.

In a statement issued by the country’s Foreign Ministry after Lai’s stopover at the US, China said, “China firmly opposes any form of official interaction between the US and the Taiwan region. We firmly oppose any visit by ‘Taiwan independence’ separatists to the US in any name or under whatever pretext, and we firmly oppose the US government having any form of official contact with the Taiwan region. China deplores and strongly condemns the US decision to arrange the so-called ‘stopover’ for Lai Ching-te.”

“We urge the US to abide by the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiqués, deliver on its commitment of not supporting ‘Taiwan independence’ or ‘two Chinas’ or ‘one China, one Taiwan’, stop all forms of official interaction with Taiwan, stop conniving at and supporting ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist forces and their separatist activities and stop fudging and hollowing out the one-China principle. China is closely following the developments of the situation and will take resolute and strong measures to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” it added. (ANI)

Hamas Palestinian Biden

Biden Expects To Meet Xi This Fall Amid Tensions

Despite escalating tensions with Beijing, US President Joe Biden is still hopeful of meeting his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping later this year, CNN reported on Friday (local time).

Notably, the two leaders are expected to meet in November this year, on the sidelines of an Asian leaders summit hosted by Biden.

Biden told CNN on Friday that he hopes to follow up on last year’s meeting with Xi “this fall.”

“I expect and hope to follow up on our conversation from Bali this fall – that’s my expectation,” Biden said.

These remarks came hours after Washington in a joint statement — after the trilateral summit between US, Japan and South Korea — denounced the “dangerous and aggressive actions” by China in the Indo-Pacific region and opposed attempts to change the status quo in Indo-Pacific.

“We share concerns about actions inconsistent with the rules-based international order, which undermine regional peace and prosperity. Recalling the publicly announced position of each of our countries regarding the dangerous and aggressive behaviour supporting unlawful maritime claims that we have recently witnessed by the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in the South China Sea, we strongly oppose any unilateral attempts to change the status quo in the waters of the Indo-Pacific,” the statement read.

They three countries also opposed the militarization of reclaimed features; the dangerous use of coast guard and maritime militia vessels and coercive activities, and further expressed concern about illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing.

“We reiterate our firm commitment to international law, including the freedom of navigation and overflight, as reflected in the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). The July 2016 award in the South China Sea arbitration sets out the legal basis for the peaceful resolution of maritime conflicts between the parties to that proceeding. We reaffirm the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait as an indispensable element of security and prosperity in the international community. There is no change in our basic positions on Taiwan, and we call for a peaceful resolution of cross-Strait issues,” the joint statement added.

Notably, Biden and Xi last spoke in person on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Bali last November.

The two leaders have however, spoken on phone several times, and officials said they expect the two men to speak again soon, potentially on the sidelines of an Asian leaders summit Biden is hosting in November in San Francisco, CNN reported.

Earlier this month, in a scathing attack on China, Biden had described Xi’s China as a “ticking time bomb” citing economic concerns. In June, Biden had even called XI a “dictator”. Both statements were denounced by Beijing.

In another major decision, Biden administration imposed restrictions on US investment in high-tech areas in China and barred exports of advanced microchips. (ANI)

Padyatras Are Publicity Stunts

‘Political Padyatras Are Publicity Stunts, Seeking Attention’

Dr Shuchi Goel, a former assistant professor at St. Joseph’s Girl’s Degree College in Sardhana, says Bharat Jodo yatra was a waste of money and man-hours. Her views:

Padyatras were historically taken by politicians or common people in India to connect with society and interact with common people. The original motive was not only to connect and unite the general public but also use it as a ‘long march’ towards popularity and power; an opportunity for politicians to interact with their voters in a fruitful manner.

But whether it is a pan-India journey or a state-level padyatra, political leaders have used it in the hope for garnering support for their party whenever elections are in sight. This is an idea of attracting or persuading people. All political parties are selling or trying to sell their different ideas in order to get a huge number of votes prior to elections. So, ultimately, it is just a political stunt, no less.

The latest example to this stunt was Bharat Jodo yatra. These were theatrics to appease pamper and appeal to the anti-establishment brigade to oust the incumbent party, in this case the BJP. But, as far as I can gauge the people’s mood, the electorate may not buy the latest offering.

For, nothing in politics is done in an altruistic manner. The big question is whether the padyatra and the crowd that it was drawing would translate into voters in the upcoming elections. Many are of the opinion that instead of ‘Bharat jodo’ it was actually a seat jodo andolan.

A padyatra may be beneficial from a health point of view but otherwise it is an aimless effort which causes hundreds of traffic jams, road diversions, and inconvenience to the general public and wastage of gallons of petrol and diesel. To top it all, hundreds who join the leader of the march either leave their everyday jobs or are perhaps aimless, mindless, youth paid for simply walking to make it look like a gathering. Roadshows are done to steal the limelight, grab attention of people and the media and get clicked or to appear on news channels.

Padyatras usually aims to project the image of an austere and organic leader, accessible to all, who relates to the difficulties and problems faced by the masses. But who does it help? If you want to act towards a cause, then do something. Take action. See that people get employment. Understand what’s happening in the education and health systems. Rectify problem areas.

How will these padyatras help? People get fooled by the fact that a leader of the stature of a celebrity is so accessible to them – they can touch him, talk to him, eat with him – that’s what appeals to them along with the misconception that they will be able to reach out to these very politicians post elections also if and when they are in power.

To an extent these padyatras are helpful in contributing to an image makeover, maybe, but it may not work for any party in terms of polls. Though there is no guarantee of success in politics, still it is an attempt at a cardinal level to reconnect and revive any party that undertakes such yatra in time for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

Living With The Taliban

Living With The Taliban

Two years after it evacuated from Afghanistan, the United States is still analysing the consequences of engaging militarily in a nation/region and those that entail withdrawal, with “lessons for the future,” as per the latest report submitted to the US Congress by US Special Inspector General for Afghanistan John F Spocko.

More detailed and forthright is the response of former US envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, Ryan Crocker. He said at the congressional hearing: “The first is to be careful about what you get into. Military interventions bring consequences.., consequences that we cannot even imagine, let alone plan for.” The second lesson was that “a withdrawal can have consequences as far-reaching and as serious as those of an intervention.., (as) we simply cede the field to our adversaries.”

One can only hope that this wisdom by hindsight would help in future, given America’s penchant for intervention and compulsion to stay on top of the global power game.

Crocker lists the “third lesson” of the need for “strategic patience.” The US failure to do so in Afghanistan, he said, had “its greatest impact… next door in Pakistan” where “allies came to fear our lack of strategic patience.” Crocker is wrong here and adds to the American delusion. Pakistan sheltered the Taliban for two decades hoodwinking the world and facilitated their return. Then Prime Minister Imran Khan called the US exit “freedom from slavery”. Far from gaining any “strategic depth”, it is running back to the US “to combat terrorism and ensure regional stability.” The US may oblige, without direct intervention. So, here we go again!

Zalmay Khalilzad midwifed the 2020 Doha Agreement with the Taliban because Donald Trump wanted to “bring the boys home” in time for his presidential re-election. ‘Boys’ returned, badly bruised, under Joe Biden. Khalilzad proposed that Afghan politicians, now living in exile, return to their country, “make a unity government and negotiate with the Taliban.” One may ask if he would risk returning to Kabul to be part of the talks with the ‘good’ Taliban.

American media and think tank reports indicate that the US thinks the Taliban may be “more willing to oblige now than ever before,” because of the growing rivalry between them and other militants, particularly the ISIS-K. Again, this delusionary vision needs to be cleared with some more introspection. Although threatened, the Taliban are unlikely to beg the world community for help.

Kabul has recently appealed only for “more transparent” dealing by the world, which can be interpreted as diplomatic recognition. But there is not even a hint in the address by their chief, Heibatullah Akhundzada, about sharing power with anyone, or a better deal for women. On both scores, the Taliban, perhaps, consider themselves as more Muslims than others. The Islamic nations are extremely wary, not for lack of solidarity but for the Taliban’s threat potential.

ALSO READ: How To Deal With A Stubborn Taliban

Other than this, the world cannot but worry on two counts: the abject poverty of the Afghan people, a majority of whom, as per the UN, do not get enough food and medical help. And as the Taliban must, Afghanistan has become a terror hub whose impact can go well beyond its borders and the region. The ISIS-K has relocated from West Asia and Al Qaida operates directly and through affiliates from Arab and Central Asian militant groups.

More experienced than they were and more cautious, but the Taliban are not very different from what they were when in power (1996-2001). There have been 51 bans on women, stymying their normal existence and taking away whatever freedom they gained during the Soviet era of the 1980s and the US-one during 2002-2021.

A mix of defiance and resignation pervades in Kabul. Those in government are under the firm control of their ideological mentors in Kandahar. They are ready to sit out for any recognition that would have to come on their terms.

The Taliban have shown tactical patience in warding off global pressures amidst poverty and isolation. Despite the obvious advantage, Pakistan enjoys as the principal provider of access to the world outside, a landlocked Afghanistan has sought to leverage its position. For one, it wants to bargain any cooperation on reining in the marauding Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) by seeking larger trade and more trading points on the border. For Kabul, the TTP is a point of leverage against Islamabad. The latter, so far, has no clue how to tackle the TTP, with or without Kabul’s cooperation.

In a bitter irony, Pakistan’s Ambassador to US Masood Khan has said that the TTP and other militant groups were using weapons left behind by US troops for attacking targets in Pakistan. As per American media reports, the US forces left behind $7billion worth of military equipment and weapons, including firearms, communications gear, and even armoured vehicles. While Kabul enjoys the bigger booty, small arms and ammunition are used by the TTP to make violent forays targeting Pakistani security forces.

The Kabul rulers treat TTP, whose fighters had fought alongside in 2021 as ideological brothers and guests – the same sentiment that made them host Osama bin Laden and his successor, Ayman al-Zawahiri. The US eliminated the latter with Pakistani logistic support. That, despite denials by Islamabad and silence by Washington, is likely to continue.

Retired Pakistani diplomat Ashraf Jahangir Qazi writes in Dawn (August 17, 2023): “Mullah Akhundzada also asks pertinent questions. Why out of Afghanistan’s six neighbours only Pakistan, which has fenced almost its entire border, complain of terrorism from Afghanistan? Is it because Pakistan cannot contain the TTP which actually operates from inside Pakistan with on-and-off support from certain quarters?” For obvious reasons, Qazi does not elaborate on “certain quarters” that are doubly betrayed, by the Taliban and the TTP.

As the US loses strategic space, the net gainer is China. The Afghan-China border trade via the Wakhan Corridor is set to begin even as Kabul seeks Chinese investment in copper mining and energy/infrastructure projects. With Pakistan, its biggest ally in the region, China is working to extend the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor to Afghanistan. Even if fraught with security risks and heavy investment, the ‘CPAEC’ opens new vistas for China. Pakistan wants it extended to Turkey as well. Even a partial success of all these plans cannot leave Afghanistan untouched.

This may seem far-fetched today – so was the CPEC – but fits into China’s plans in the vast region where its economic footprint can grow wider. Deft diplomatic moves in facilitating an Iran-Saudi Arabian rapprochement earlier this year have shown that China can pull off successes in areas that the West for long considered its backyard.

Two years of Taliban are but a speck in Afghanistan’s long history as the crossroad of invaders and emperors, conquerors, scholars, builders and travellers. Sadly, however, peace has eluded its people. There is no idea how many more generations will have to suffer.
