Chief Minister Keshav

He Has To Learn Lot Of Things: UP Deputy CM On Rahul’s Remarks

Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya on Thursday said that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has to learn a lot of things in life after the ‘Bharat Mata ki Hatya’ remarks he made in Lok Sabha yesterday.

While speaking to reporters, Keshav Prasad Maurya said,” When a child is born, he learns to walk, write, read everything at the age of two-three-four years, but respected Rahul Gandhi has yet to learn many things even after so many years of his life. Sometimes he gives flying kiss, sometimes he winks and sometimes he starts hugging. Now talking about Bharat Mata ki Hatya.”

“Rahul Gandhi still needs to learn a lot and should come out of his ruling family mindset,” he added.

Meanwhile, Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury defended Rahul Gandhi over his remarks and said that he did not use any unparliamentary words.

“If a word is unparliamentary there is a provision to remove it. I don’t think so Rahul Gandhi has used any unparliamentary words. Rahul Gandhi said that Bharat Mata is being humiliated. So he raised this matter. I have taken up this issue with the Lok Sabha Speaker, and he has assured me that he will look into it,” he said.

Rahul Gandhi, who was the first speaker as the no-confidence debate resumed on Wednesday, attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi over ethnic violence in Manipur.

Referring to BJP which is in power both at the Centre and in Manipur, he said, “You killed Bharat Mata in Manipur.”

The Congress leader referred to his visit to Manipur and his meetings with victims of violence in the state and said ‘Bharat’ is the voice of the people of the country and that “voice was killed in Manipur”.

“Bharat ek awaaz hai, Bharat hamari janta ki awaaz hai, dil ki awaaz hai. Uss awaaz ki hatya aapne Manipur mein ki. Iska matlab Bharat Mata ki hatya aapne Manipur mein ki.You killed India by killing the people of Manipur. You are a traitor, you are not a patriot,” Rahul Gandhi said.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said that the members should show respect while using the expression ‘Bharat Mata’.

It was the first speech of Rahul Gandhi since his reinstatement as a member of the House after his disqualification following his conviction by a Gujarat court in a defamation case. (ANI)

Election Commissioner Bill

Govt To Introduce Bill On Appointment Of CEC; Oppo Raises Red Flag

A Bill to regulate the appointment, conditions of service and term of office of the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners is on the agenda on the government for introduction in Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

Union Minister of Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal is slated to introduce the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners (Appointment Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Bill, 2023.

The Bill also deals with procedure for transaction of business by the Election Commission.

The Bill proposes that the Election Commissioners will be appointed by the President on the recommendation of a panel comprising the Prime Minister, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and a Union Cabinet Minister nominated by the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister will chair the panel.

The Bill, if it comes into effect, will negate the Supreme Court’s March 2023 judgment that held that the appointment of Election Commissioners will be done by the President on the advice of a panel comprising the Prime Minister, Leader of Opposition and the Chief Justice of India. However, in its judgement, the apex court had held that the procedure underlined by it would hold till a law is made by Parliament.

The proposed bill has evoked a sharp reaction from opposition parties. Congress leader KC Venugopal said the bill aims to make Election Commission a “puppet in hands of Prime Minister”

“A blatant attempt to make the Election Commission a total puppet in the hands of the Prime Minister,” he said in a tweet.

Delhi Chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said in a tweet that the bill shows that “the Prime Minister will change any decision of the Supreme Court that he does not like by introducing a bill in the Parliament”.

In response to Arvind Kejriwal, BJP leader Amit Malviya said that the government is within it rights to bring the bill.

“The SC judgement had suggested a transient method for appointment of the CEC, in absence of a statutory mechanism. The govt is well within it right to bring in bill for the same,” he said in a tweet.  (ANI)

No-Confidence Motion: PM To Reply In LS Around 4 PM

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to address the Lok Sabha on Thursday at 4 pm in response to the Opposition’s no-confidence motion against the NDA government.

“At around 4 PM this evening, PM @narendramodi will be taking part in the discussion on the Motion of No-Confidence,” the Prime Minister’s Office tweeted.

The opposition moved a no-confidence motion against the Modi government on July 26 which was accepted by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.

This is the second time Prime Minister Narendra Modi is facing a no-confidence motion.

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Tuesday initiated the debate on the motion which later turned into a heated argument between the Opposition and the Centre.

The Parliament has been witnessing a logjam over a number of issues, including the violence in Manipur, since the beginning of the Monsoon Session on July 20.

The opposition leaders have been demanding a full-fledged discussion on the issue including a statement by the prime minister in the Parliament. Both houses — Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha — have seen repeated adjournments amid massive ruckus by the opposition leaders.

Manipur had been on the boil for the last three months after ethnic clashes broke out between two tribal communities Meitis and Kukis, when the Manipur High Court asked the state government to consider adding one of the communities to the list of Scheduled Tribes. (ANI)

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Raghav Chadha

I Challenge: Raghav Hits Back At BJP Over Forged Signatures Allegation

Aam Aadmi Party leader Raghav Chadha on Thursday hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over “forged signatures” allegations by five Rajya Sabha MPs and challenged the BJP to show him the piece of paper where they are claiming the forged signatures.

Chadha’s statement came after Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the Rajya Sabha alleged fraud after five MPs of the Upper House — S Phangnon Konyak, Narhari Amin and Sudhanshu Trivedi of BJP, M Thambidurai of AIADMK and Sasmit Patra of BJD — said that their name was included without their consent in a motion moved by Chadha in the House.

While addressing a press conference in the national capital, Chadha said, “I challenge the BJP leaders to bring the paper on which forged signatures were done.”

Citing the rule book AAP leader said that MP can propose the name for the formation of any committee and neither the signature nor the written consent of the person whose name is proposed is required.

“But a lie was spread that forged signatures were done,” he added.

He further requested the media to show the truth and said that will file a case against small section of the media who were running propaganda against him.

“I request the media to show the truth. A small section of the media was running propaganda against me and I will have to file a complaint against them. I will also have to file a complaint in Court and Privileges Committee against those MPs who claimed that the signatures were forged,” he added.

Meanwhile, AAP leader Sanjay Singh was also present during the conference and said that BJP government wants to end Chadha’s Rajya Sabha membership just like they did with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

“A new tradition has started that whoever speaks against Modi ji, take action against him. Home Minister Amit Shah should know that no signature is required to propose the name. The party is trying to end the membership of Raghav Chadha like Rahul Gandhi,” Sanjay Singh said at a press conference.

“The BJP’s mantra is to tell a lie 1,000 times to make it sound like the truth. The BJP floated this false narrative that signatures were forged,” he added.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah speaking in Rajya Sabha on Delhi Services Bill yesterday said, “Two members (BJD MP Sasmit Patra and BJP MP Dr Sudhanshu Trivedi) are saying that they have not signed the motion (to be part of select committee) moved by AAP MP Raghav Chadha. Now it is a matter of investigation how the motion was signed.” (ANI)

Yamuna

SC Asks Delhi, Haryana For Status Report On Pollution In Yamuna River

The Supreme Court has asked the Delhi and Haryana governments to file a status report on pollution of the Yamuna River.

A bench of Justices AS Bopanna and Prashant Kumar Mishra has listed the matter for further hearing on October 3.

“In that view, we deem it appropriate to first hear the issue relating to the pollution of the Yamuna River. In that regard, the status report shall separately be filed by the State of Haryana as also by the State of Delhi,” the court said on its Tuesday’s order copy.

The court order came after hearing the submission made by Amicus Curiae as also the other counsel representing the parties.

It was brought to the court’s notice that in these petitions and applications, the matter

relating to the pollution of the Yamuna River as also the coastal areas and the remedial measures are an issue.

It was pointed out that it would be appropriate these issues be divided and heard so that corrective measures may be implemented effectively.

The court further stated that, while the subject of coastal areas will be dealt up separately, with a date set on following occasions when these cases are mentioned, the progress report in that regard is also required to be filed by the relevant authorities.

The apex court had taken suo moto cognizance on the issue of “remediation of polluted rivers” observing that one of the major causes of water pollution was the discharge of non treated/ partially treated municipal waste and effluents of various states and cities.

The suo moto cognizance was taken on the issue of pollution of water resources and the deterioration in quality of fresh water as being an issue of greater importance affecting general public and living beings including marine life.

“Deterioration of quality of fresh water has a direct correlation with the quality of public health. It is an acknowledged fact that pollution of water supplies by sewage effluents has been and still is a major cause of variety of diseases and discomforts,” the Bench had stated in its earlier order. Union Home Minister Amit Shah

Tahawwur, The 26/11 Accused To Face Indian Judiciary Soon: Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday said that Tahawwur Rana, an accused of the 26/11 Mumbai attack will face the Indian judiciary soon.

While speaking in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday during the debate on No-Confidence-motion moved by the Opposition, Shah highlighted the measures taken by the Modi government to curb terrorism and Naxalism.

“We banned PFI in the country and conducted raids at over 90 locations in the country. Cases regarding attacks on our missions in London, Ottawa and San Francisco were handed over to NIA (National Investigation Agency). 26/11 Tahawwur Hussain Rana will also soon face the judiciary in India,” Shah said.

Rana was arrested in the US on an extradition request by India for his role in the Mumbai attacks in which 10 Pakistani terrorists laid a more than 60-hour siege, attacking and killing over 160 people, including six Americans, at iconic and vital locations in Mumbai.

Indian authorities allege that Rana conspired with his childhood friend David Coleman Headley to assist the Pakistani terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba ” in the orchestration of the terror attacks.

Headley and Rana attended military high school in Pakistan together.

Rana’s immigration law centre in Chicago, as well as a satellite office in Mumbai, was allegedly used as a front for their terrorism activities between 2006 and 2008, prosecutors say.

Headley, the master plotter of the 26/11 Mumbai attack, had pleaded guilty and testified against Rana. Rana is fighting extradition by claiming double jeopardy because he was acquitted of Mumbai massacre charges in a Chicago federal courtroom. Rana is arguing that he has already been acquitted of the charges he would face overseas.

However, Shah further said that terrorism was eradicated from Jammu and Kashmir after Prime Minister Narendra Modi formed a government at the Centre.

“In the view of internal security, there used to be three hotspots- Kashmir, the region of Naxals and Northeast and it continued to be the same for years. We changed our policies towards Kashmir in 2014. From 2014 to 19, Rajnath Singhji was Home Minister, and after that, I became Home Minister. We eradicated terrorism in the region,” Shah said.

“Naxals limited to only 3 districts in Chhattisgarh now…,” he added.

Hitting out at the previous government at Centre, Shah said that the UPA government was there from 2004 to 2014 and terrorists would just enter across the border and cut our soldiers’ heads off, no one did anything about it.

He further said, “We will talk to the youth of Kashmir valley, not Hurriyat, Jamiat and Pakistan.” (ANI)

Mamata Banerjee Modi Bengal

Modi To Reply To The No-Confidence Motion In LS Tomorrow

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will mark his presence in the Lok Sabha on August 10 to reply to the no-confidence motion moved by the Opposition against the NDA government, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Wednesday.

“The PM will be present in the House tomorrow to reply to the no-confidence motion,” the Union minister told the Lower House.

Just before the adjournment of the House, the Union Minister confirmed the same.

The opposition moved a no-confidence motion against the Modi government on July 26 which was taken up by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.

However, Modi’s government won’t lose the vote as his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies have a majority in the Lok Sabha.

Any Lok Sabha MP, who has the support of 50 colleagues, can, at any point of time, introduce a motion of no-confidence against the Council of Ministers.

Thereafter, a discussion on the motion takes place. MPs who support the motion highlight the government’s shortcomings, and the Treasury Benches respond to the issues they raise. Ultimately, voting takes place and if the motion is successful, the government is forced to vacate the office.

Notably, the NDA has a commendable majority with a number of 331 MPs out of which the BJP has 303 MPs while the combined strength of the Opposition bloc I.N.D.I.A is 144. The numbers of unaligned parties’ MPs are 70 in the Lower House.

This is the second time Prime Minister Narendra Modi is facing a no-confidence motion.

The first such motion against the Modi government was introduced in 2018 over granting a special category status to Andhra Pradesh which was later defeated.

However, the discussion over the motion has been held on August 8 and August 9.

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Tuesday initiated the debate on the motion which later turned into a heated argument between Opposition and the Centre.

Gogoi, while speaking in House said that the Opposition was compelled to move the motion to break the ‘maun vrat’ of the PM and further asked three questions to the PM.

“Three questions to the PM–Why did he not go to Manipur yet?  Rahul Gandhi went there, MPs from different parties, part of I.N.D.I.A went there; Union Home Minister went there and MoS Home also went, but being the PM of the country, why Modi didn’t Modi go to the state? The second question is- why it took 80 days for Modi ji to speak on Manipur? When he spoke, he spoke only for 30 seconds. After that too, there is no sympathetic word from Modi ji, nor has he appealed for peace there. Ministers are saying ‘We will speak on the issue’; they should do that, and no one has stopped them to speak, but ministers’ words do not hold as much significance as Modi ji’s does. If Mr Modi takes an initiative for peace, the step would be considered as a strong one which cannot be done by any minister,” Gogoi said.

He further questioned why the PM has not sacked Manipur CM yet.

“My third question is why the PM has not sacked Manipur CM yet. When you had to do politics in Gujarat, you changed the CM and that too two times. When there were elections in Uttarakhand you changed the CM several times. When the elections were approaching in Tripura, you changed the CM there too. So, why are you blessing the Manipur CM who himself has confessed that there was an intelligence failure because of him,” Gogoi said on Tuesday. (ANI)
