On My Way To Uncover: Chandrayaan-3 Pragyan Rover’s Message

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Tuesday shared a fresh update on Chandrayaan 3’s Pragyan Rover which is on its expedition on the Lunar south pole.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), ISRO said that the rover is now on its way to uncover Moon secrets.

“Hello earthlings! This is #Chandrayaan3’s Pragyan Rover. I hope you’re doing well. I want to let everyone know that I’m on my way to uncover the secrets of the Moon. Me and my friend Vikram Lander are in touch. We’re in good health. The best is coming soon,” ISRO InSight posted on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Earlier on August 28, ISRO informed that Pragyan Rover came across a 4-meter diameter crater on the lunar surface.

Taking to X (former Twitter), ISRO said, “Chandrayaan-3 Mission: On August 27, 2023, the Rover came across a 4-meter diameter crater positioned 3 meters ahead of its location. The Rover was commanded to retrace the path.”

ISRO said that the rover is now safely heading on a new path.

India took a giant leap on August 23, as the Chandrayaan-3 lander module successfully landed on the moon’s South pole, making it the first country to have achieved the historic feat.

The country became the fourth– after the US, China, and Russia – to have successfully landed on the moon’s surface. (ANI)

Pakistan

Pakistan Struggling To Find Solution To Electricity Price

As Pakistan’s caretaker government is struggling to address the issue of ‘electricity price shock’ amid the ongoing countrywide protests, a potential petroleum price shock looms over the horizon later this week that could push price of fuel products beyond Pakistani Rupees (PKR) 300 per litre, Pakistan-based Dawn reported.

The development comes as the Pakistan caretaker government continues to hold talks for the third consecutive day in a bid to find ways to give relief to the protesting people. However, the government has not been able to succeed.

The price of petrol and high-speed diesel is estimated to rise by about PKR 9-10 per litre and PKR 18-20 per litre, respectively on August 31. Furthermore, the price of kerosene is slated to rise by about PKR 13 per litre, based on existing tax rates and import parity price, particularly due to currency depreciation and slight increase in international oil prices, according to Dawn report.

Background discussions with relevant officials suggest that the caretaker government had no option to give any permanent relief in electricity prices to the people, except by providing instalments for a couple of months or staggering recoveries of current two-month bills to winter months, when normal consumption reduces by almost half.

Pakistan’s caretaker government has already requested the power regulator to start charging another PKR 5.40 per unit quarterly tariff adjustment over six winter months starting in October instead of permissible in three months, Dawn reported.

The main reason behind the current power tariff is current depreciation, accounting for almost 70 per cent and the government had no option at its disposal at present to control, considering the IMF programme. Further, a 10-12 per cent hike is due to interest rates and the government and the SBP’s hands are tied under the fund programme.

According to sources, these were the proposals put forward by the power division to the Pakistan Prime Minister’s Office along with a few other recommendations that involve financial effect that could only be implemented at the cost of the IMF programme and hence not supported by the finance ministry, according to Dawn report.

These officials said that the power division had indicated giving one-slab benefits to the residential consumers, the report said. Another suggestion was related to reducing the sales tax rate or doing away with other taxes like income tax and surcharges. However, these taxes had been imposed under the overall scheme of the IMF programme to achieve a specific tax target and circular debt reduction plan.

Pakistan’s caretaker government now has only one option left which is to suspend television and radio taxes. However, these are inconsequential and hence not being considered for any change.

Under the ongoing Stand-by arrangement (SBA), Pakistan’s caretaker government is bound to provide quarterly data on performance related to recoveries and circular debt changes to the IMF as per the set targets no later than 30 days after the completion of each quarter.

As per the news report, the government cannot make any slippage on the completion of the first quarter on September 30 which will be reviewed by the IMF staff by the end of October or early November for the disbursement of USD 710 million second tranche of the USD 3 billion SBA.

On Sunday, Muttahida Qaumi Movement – Pakistan (MQM-P) convener Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui warned that protests against inflated power bills could turn into riots. He said that his party would join people on the streets if relief was not given to people, Pakistan-based Dawn reported.

Speaking at a press conference in Bahadurabad on Sunday, Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui said that it was time to review the national power supply policy, which he stressed was in favour of certain classes and exploited the poor.

“We are concerned that this anger over inflated power bills can turn into a riot. This is a major crisis and it is time to take drastic measures,” he said, according to Dawn report.

He further said, “Otherwise we will be left with no option but to take to the streets and support people’s demands.” (ANI)

Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc

Want To Conduct Survey, Not Census: Nitish

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday targeted the Central government over their affidavit in the Supreme Court on Bihar’s government decision to conduct a caste-based census in the state.

CM Nitish Kumar was at the inauguration ceremony of the newly constructed building at Nalanda University.

While speaking to the media, Nitish said “It is the Central government’s duty to conduct a census, we only want to conduct a survey in the state. Census is what is done at the Centre level and we cant do that. We want to gather financial information about the different people irrespective of any caste, rich or poor, Hindu or Muslim living in the state so that, we can work for their welfare.”

The Central government on Monday in its reply to the Supreme Court on the Bihar government’s caste-based survey filed and affidavit and said that only it is entitled to conduct a census,.

On being asked about the upcoming INDIA alliance meeting in Mumbai on September 1, CM Nitish kumar said “Elections (2024 Lok Sabha) can happen at any time. It’s not necessary that they are conducted on time.”

Earlier, Janata Dal-United (JDU) leader Vijay Kumar Chaudhary slammed the Central government for filing an affidavit in the Supreme Court against Bihar’s government decision to conduct caste-based census in the state.

The Finance Minister of Bihar, Vijay Chaudhary was addressing a press conference at the party’s office when he said “Patna High court also stands with the idea of Bihar government’ of caste-based census. The central government is interfering in the matter. What the Central Government has done in the matter of caste census in the Supreme Court is not only comical, but it also stands against the benefits of the poor in Bihar.”

Reacting to it, Bihar Deputy CM, Tejashwi Yadav also took a swipe at the centre and said “They have no knowledge. They only know how to lie and suppress the truth. They have opposed it even in the affidavit. It has been made clear that the BJP does not want it and is opposing it.”

He further said that the Centre should conduct a caste census across the country if it supports it. (ANI)

Al-Qaeda Assam Module: NIA Chargesheets 2 Terrorists

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a supplementary chargesheet against two active members of an Al-Qaeda-linked terrorist group’s active module operating from Assam in a conspiracy to spread terror and violence in India.

The two accused, identified as Mohammed Akbar Ali alias Akbar Ali and Abul Kalam Azad, had conspired with the other accused to instigate and promote terrorist activities, as part of an active terror module of the Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), which is affiliated with the proscribed terrorist organisation, Al-Qaeda in Indian Sub-Continent (AQIS).

They were engaged in strengthening the Al-Qaeda and ABT and grooming the youth to commit terror acts, mentioned the NIA in its investigations.

Both Akbar Ali and Abul Kalam Azad were arrested on April 5 this year and have now been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act by the NIA, which had filed the original chargesheet against eight other accused in August last year.

Investigations have also revealed that the two accused were co-conspirators in organising meetings for expanding the activities of AQIS to various religious places in the neighbouring districts of Assam, said the NIA.

“The radicalization and mobilisation of Muslims were being done under the active guidance of the module’s Bangladeshi handlers, namely Zakir alias Mehdi Hassan alias Aminul Islam, Mehboor Rahman alias Mehboob Alam alias Sultan,” said the anti-terror agency.

The case was filed originally by the Assam Police on March 4 last year and taken over by the NIA on March 22 last year under relevant sections of IPC, UA(P) Act, Passports Act and Foreigners Act after the activities of the ABT module came to light.

As per the NIA, the module, operating in the Barpeta district of Assam, was led by a Bangladeshi national Saiful Islam alias Haroon Rashid alias Mohammed Suman.

“Investigations revealed that Saiful was cleverly operating under the cover of an Arabic teacher at ‘Shaikhul Hind Mahmadul Hasan Jamiul Huda Islamic Academy’ (Dhakaliapara Madarsa) and Imam at the Dhakaliapara Masjid. He was actively engaged in indoctrination and radicalisation of Muslims to join Jihadi outfits to work in modules (‘Ansars’ – sleeper cells) for building a base for Al-Qaeda and its various manifestations amd outfits in India,” said the Central agency.

“A search is on for the Bangladeshi handlers of the module and other members involved in the promotion and perpetration of terrorism for Al-Qaeda and ABT in the country,” it added. (ANI)
