‘Tamil Spiritual Journey Has Always Countered Narrow Hinduism’

AS Panneerselvan, a Chennai-based academic, says Tamil consciousness has a history of challenging the organised religion which discriminates against people. His views:

After decades, Tamil Nadu is in news about its idea of faith, religiosity and its constant fight for the dignity of every citizen — man, woman, child and transgender. This time the debate has been ignited by Udhayanidhi Stalin, a cabinet minister in Tamil Nadu, and secretary of the DMK’s youth wing. Interestingly, in an event organised by the Left, not on a Dravidian movement platform, he observed that ‘Sanatana’ is divisive and deplorable and equated it (Sanatan Dharma) with “mosquitoes, dengue, malaria, fever and corona”. He said it was not enough to contain the spread of this practice, it should be eradicated like these ailments.

The BJP, which has failed on all fronts, is now trying to get political mileage out of this considered opinion, which is ‘commonsense understanding’ in Tamil Nadu. In this state, there has been a questioning of organised religion that discriminates against people and its vertical hierarchy for centuries.

The most articulate criticism of this hierarchy-based religiosity came from 19th century saint-poet, Ramalinga Adigal, popularly called Vallalar. He created an oeuvre of work that embraced love and shunned exclusivity. It was Vallalar’s idea of inclusivity that makes him the ‘Father of Tamil Modernity’.

There are five critical elements in Vallalar’s work: simplicity, lyricism, compassion, seeking truth, and, finally, not being a literal interpreter of any of the earlier texts. What Udhyanidhi said was in the Vallalar tradition. It was not against anyone’s personal faith or belief, but it was against bigotry, violence in the name of religion, and humiliation due to a vertical hierarchy that divides people. His speech was widely understood in Tamil Nadu as a clarion call for the dignity of everyone.

Vallalar did not accept Sanatana Dharma and has explained how it justifies stratification of human beings. Vallalar’s songs repeatedly call on every human being to see all life as theirs; and this universalism in his spiritual quest has been ingrained into the general political consciousness of Tamil Nadu.

In the Tamil consciousness, the body is not an illusion but is real. In fact, the Tamil word for body is ‘Mei’, which also means ‘truth’. Hence, right from Sangam literature, there are attempts to address to two crucial ailments: hunger and illness.

Tamil Nadu’s spiritual journey cannot be shoehorned into the juggernaut of hate generated from the so-called defenders of narrow Hinduism. This may explain some of the affirmative actions of Tamil Nadu more clearly: breakfast and mid-day meals for school children, affordable canteens for general public, an effective Public Distribution System, and the supply of rice at a subsidised price.

The real reason for the BJP to attack the DMK has nothing to do with Udhyanidhi’s observation. It is the oldest regional party’s stellar role in bringing the opposition together into a cohesive alliance in the form of INDIA. The DMK made it clear to other poltical formations such as AAP and TMC not to take a self-defeating, anti-Congress line. MK Stalin, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, and president of the DMK, has been in the forefront of making the Congress an integral part of the opposition’s poltical mobilisation.

It was MK Stalin who flagged off Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra from Kanyakumari last year. It was Stalin who explained that ‘Congress Mukt India’ is a BJP plan and that others should not endorse this idea if they want to save the plural vision of the subcontinent. In a sense, the changes in Bihar, the joining of hands of AAP and TMC in the INDIA alliance, were also made possible by the relentless efforts of the DMK. This political mobilisation is not without a huge price.

The BJP, which has weaponised institutions such as the Enforcement Directorate and CBI, have launched numerous investigations against the DMK leaders. Senthil Balaji, a sitting minister, has been arrested by the ED, and now he is a minister without portfolio. Despite multiple raids and searches in the premises belonging to Senthil Balaji, his relatives and friends, the ED is yet to file a credible chargesheet. The attack on DMK is due to these factors, as the party questions the BJP and its centralisation moves from an irrefutable, ‘constitutionalist’ viewpoint.

For instance, the party has taken a strong objection to the union government’s ‘PM Vishwakarma Scheme’. The DMK leaders have said the initiative would force youth to follow their family’s traditional professions and dissuade them from pursuing high-paying careers. The state government has also constituted a four-member committee to assess the potential impact of the scheme on artisans’ education and social mobility. The official position of the party is that the rules and regulations of the scheme would encourage caste-based traditions and eventually consolidate caste in the guise of supporting handicrafts and artisans among 18 OBC communities. Meanwhile, the Dravidian model government is assisting first-generation graduates and college-goers since it wants youth to pursue higher education and make strides.

What irks the BJP is the fact that the DMK remains a steadfast champion of the state’s rights despite having an antagonistic governor and a judiciary which seems to endorse centralisation in one form or the other. In a sense, DMK has given an idea of confronting the BJP by not creating an oppositional monolith, but a decentralised, multi-nodal political framework. Instead of looking at 2024 as a battle between Narendra Modi versus another politician, the DMK has effectively turned it to hyper-centralisation versus the ‘idea of India’. And, for this, the BJP has no effective answer, and, hence, its ire against the old regional party of the country.

INDIA bloc Parliamentary meet

INDIA Bloc Assures Support For Women Reservation Bill

Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh on Wednesday expressing his concern over the implementation of Women’s Reservation Bill and urged the centre to implement the bill in 2024 if their intentions were clear. The AAP MP also assured the support of the INDIA bloc to the bill.

AAP MP Sanjay Singh said, “This is definitely not a Women’s Reservation Bill, this is ‘Mahila Bewakoof Banao’ Bill. We have been saying this because none of the promises made by them have been fulfilled ever since PM Modi came to power. This is another ‘jumla’ brought by them…If you want to implement the Bill, AAP stands with you completely but implement it in 2024. Do you think the women of the country are fools? Anti-women BJP has brought one more ‘jumla’ in the name of the Bill. Women of the country, political parties understand these election tactics. So, we say that if their intentions are clear, implement it in 2024…”

MP Sanjay Singh said that in the Women’s Reservation Bill introduced by the UPA in 2010 there was no such conditions that the bill would be implemented in 15 years or 20 years and delimitation would be conducted.

Sanjay Singh said, “If the centre is serious about the Women’s Reservation Bill then the time limit clause should be removed and it should be implemented in 2024. INDIA alliance meeting is going to be held and we will discuss the details soon.”

However, the AAP MP has assured that the INDIA alliance members will vote in favour of the bill after voicing their opposition to certain clauses.

“The INDIA alliance members have agreed to question the Government’s intent on the bill in the house, we will also oppose the fact that the implementation of the bill is being delayed. However, during the voting on the bill we will vote in favour of the bill” said Sanjay Singh.

Earlier ahead of the discussion on the Women’s Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha today, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said that discussion on the bill will be held throughout the day and it has nothing to do with politics.

Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal introduced the bill in the first sitting of Lok Sabha in the new Parliament building on Tuesday. Arjun Ram Meghwal said that once the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam is passed, the number of seats for women in Lok Sabha will increase to 181. (ANI)

Sonia Gandhi

Sonia Seeks Immediate Implementation Of Women Quota Bill

Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday began the discussion on the Women’s Reservation Bill in Lok Sabha on the third day of the special session of Parliament.

Extending her support to the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam 2023’ Bill, Sonia Gandhi demanded its immediate implementation.

She said that a delay in implementing the bill is a gross unfairness to the women of the country.

“I stand in support of Nari Shakti Vandan Adhinyam 2023. Women are being told that they will have to wait more for this bill to become law. we demand that the bill be made a law immediately. As a delay in implementing the bill is a gross unfairness to women in the country. I appeal to the Government to do this immediately,” Sonia Gandhi said in Lok Sabha.

She also demanded the conducting of a caste census to ensure the participation of women belonging to Other Backward Class/Scheduled Caste (OBC/SC) communities.

Ahead of her speech in Lok Sabha Sonia Gandhi said, “It was Rajiv ji’s (Gandhi’s) dream (Bill).”

“This is an emotional moment of my own life as well. For the first time, Constitutional amendment to decide women’s representation in local body election was brought by my life partner Rajiv Gandhi. It was defeated in Rajya Sabha by seven votes. Later, Congress Government, under the leadership of PM PV Narasimha Rao, passed it in Rajya Sabha. As a result, we have 15 lakh elected women leaders across the country through local bodies. Rajiv Gandhi’s dream is only partially complete. It will complete with the passing of this Bill,” Sonia Gandhi said in Lok Sabha.

She said the Congress party supports this Bill and is happy regarding the passage of the Bill but said there were concerns.

“I would like to ask a question. Indian women have been waiting for their political responsibilities for the last 13 years. Now they are being asked to wait for a few more years. How many years? Is this behaviour with Indian women appropriate? INC demands that the Bill be implemented with immediate effect but Caste census should also be done and arrangement for reservation of SC, ST and OBC women should be made…” Sonia Gandhi said.

Discussion for passing of the Bill in the House began today at 11 with Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal introducing the amendments in the Bill.

The Bill will be taken up in Rajya Sabha on September 21, government sources said. (ANI)

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut said on Wednesday that the Women’s Reservation Bill is for the entire nation so there should be no fight over the credit for the bill.

“The fight for credit should end…This work (Women’s Reservation Bill) is for the entire nation…It is your (BJP) government at present, it may be some other government (in rule) tomorrow. If you (BJP) talk about women then why do you fight over credit…You have brought the bill, you have tabled it, you’ve shown the courage and we appreciate your courage,” said Raut.

In 2008, the Manmohan Singh-led UPA government tabled the Bill in the Rajya Sabha, and it was passed in 2010. However, the Bill was never taken up for consideration in the Lok Sabha.

Introducing the bill in the house, Meghwal said “This bill is in relation to women empowerment. By amending Article 239AA of the Constitution, 33 percent of seats will be reserved for women in the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi. Article 330A reservations of seats for SC/ST in the House of People.”

Meghwal also said that once the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam is passed, the number of seats for women in Lok Sabha will increase to 181.

Nuh Violence: MLA Mamman Khan Sent To Judicial Custody

Nuh Chief Judicial Magistrate Court on Tuesday sent Congress Member of Legislative Assembly Mamman Khan to 14 days’ judicial custody in connection with the Nuh violence case.

Earlier, Nuh district court on Sunday sent Congress MLA to a further two days of police remand after completion of the previous two-day remand.

Mamman Khan’s lawyer Tahir Hussain Devla said, “Mamman Khan was presented in the court after 2 days of police remand. Police presented Mamman Khan in four cases. Three more new cases have been imposed on Mamman Khan. In all four new cases, 149,137,148,150 have been imposed on him. He has been produced today in case number 149 after two days of remand. In case number 137, the police had sought a remand of five days, on which the court has given a remand of 2 days to the police.”

Mamman Khan’s lawyer said that Mamman Khan is being implicated in this whole matter under a political conspiracy and Mamman Khan has nothing to do with this whole matter.

MLA Mamman Khan – who was arrested in connection with the recent communal clashes in Nuh and adjoining areas of the state on September 15, was sent to a two-day police remand by the district court. Khan was reported to have been arrested from the house of one of his relatives on the Jaipur-Ajmer road and was brought to Nuh on Friday.

Khan, who was arrested by a special investigation team of the Haryana police was produced in a local district court in Nuh later on September 15. The police then sought his custody from the court for interrogation.

Khan was arrested by Haryana police in the early hours of Friday, a day after the state government told the Punjab and Haryana High Court that it had named him as an accused in an FIR in a case pertaining to the Nuh violence. Khan was arrested by a special investigation team (SIT) of the Haryana police.

Violence broke out in Nuh during a procession by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad on July 31 this year. Six people were killed and a cleric died in an attack on a mosque in adjoining Gurugram. The Ferozepur Jhirka MLA had moved the court on September 12, seeking protection from arrest while claiming that he was being framed in the case since he was not present in Nuh the day the violence broke out. India Canada Relations

India Canada Relations Face A Setback: Foreign Policy Experts

Stating that is less likely that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will change his approach on the Khalistan issue, Robinder Sachdev, an expert in foreign affairs said that it seems that the India-Canada relations will be taking a back seat.

He further said that the Canadian government has expelled the Indian diplomat because India gave a message to Canada to address the Khalistan issue.

Speaking to ANI, Sachdev said, “In my opinion, this move by Canada is a retaliation for India stopping the trade deal between the two nations. PM Modi during G20, told Justin Trudeau to address the Khalistan issue in Canada seriously. India gave a message to Canada by halting the trade deal between the two nations”.

“In response, Canada has taken this petty step of expelling an Indian diplomat, by levelling such serious allegations. This has no basis and is completely uncalled for,” he added.

He further said that India has sufficient evidence of Khalistani activities in Canada and Ottawa needs to change its approach.

“We have sufficient evidence and proof, we see and hear in the media, that Khalistani elements are extremely active in Canada…The Trudeau government will have to change its approach. But unfortunately, Trudeau won’t, and he is the PM of Canada at least till October 2025, so it seems the India-Canada relations will take a back seat,” Sachdev said.

Sachdev also raised concerns about the Canadian government taking the “baseless allegation” at the international level which can hurt India’s image as well as India-Canada ties.

“The Trudeau government might take some more steps. The Canadian PM Office has said that Trudeau has spoken with US President Joe Biden and UK PM Rishi Sunak on this matter. Whatever difference of opinion is there between India and Canada should be a bilateral matter. Canada should not take across the world this baseless allegation, which disturbs India’s image and as well as is not good for India-Canada relations,” Sachdev added.

Meanwhile, in a reciprocal move to the expulsion of its diplomat by Canada, India on Tuesday, summoned the Canadian High Commissioner Cameron MacKay and informed him that it was expelling a senior Canadian diplomat.

Canadian PM Trudeau on Monday accused the Indian government of being behind the fatal shooting of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. He claimed that his country’s national security officials had reasons to believe that “agents of the Indian government” carried out the killing of the Canadian citizen, who also served as the president of Surrey’s Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara.

Nijjar, who was wanted in India, was gunned down outside a Gurdwara, in a parking area in Canada’s Surrey, British Columbia on June 18. Hailing from Bharsinghpur village in Punjab’s Jalandhar, Nijjar was based in Surrey and had been declared “absconder” by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

In a further souring of ties, this was followed by Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly on Monday said an Indian diplomat in the country had been expelled.

India has, however, rejected the allegations by Canadian PM Trudeau regarding the government’s involvement in the fatal shooting of Nijjar. In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) termed the allegations ‘absurd ‘and ‘motivated’.

“We have seen and rejected the statement of the Canadian Prime Minister in their Parliament, as also the statement by their Foreign Minister,” said the MEA in an official statement. (ANI)
