8,820 Fruit-Laden Trucks Allowed Passage On Srinagar-Jammu Highway

Over 10,000 heavy motor vehicles including 8820 fruit-laden trucks have been released through Navyug and Jawahar Tunnels during the past 24 hours.

“Over 10000 HMVs including 8820 fruit-laden trucks released through Navyug and Jawahar Tunnels during the past 24 hours. Chief Secretary compliments all functionaries and asks them to keep up the momentum”, Jammu and Kashmir Information Department said in a tweet.
For the first time after three decades, a Union Minister went to Baramulla in Jammu and Kashmir to hold a rally.

On October 5, Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a rally in Baramulla. Sources said Shah’s rally got a phenomenal response from the people of the district.

As per the sources present in the rally, the highest cheering was witnessed when the Home Minister spoke about the availability of free gas cylinders for women. It is also reported that in the hilly areas of the Union Territory, women registered to get the Ujjwala scheme benefit and got two cylinders instead of one.

“The development of Jammu and Kashmir is the prime agenda of the PM Modi government at the Centre. BJP does not wish to ally with any of the regional players in J-K,” a top BJP source told ANI.

Another source told ANI that, “the briefing given to the security agencies in the region is to ensure complete wipe out of terrorism and its supporters.”

The changing face of Jammu and Kashmir was evident because crowds turned up in huge numbers and it was a responsive gathering.

The Home Minister launched and laid the foundation stones of projects worth Rs 2000 crore in Kashmir and Rs 1900 crore in the Jammu region.

Shah sent a clear message that J-K is a priority for the Centre and leaders of three political parties, who ruled J-K for 70 years, can no longer dictate terms to New Delhi, nor can they hoodwink the gullible people of J-K as the times have changed.

He termed the turning of Kashmir from a “terrorist spot” into a “tourist spot” as one of the major achievements of the PM Modi-led regime and assured the people that J&K will keep on flourishing under PM Modi’s leadership.

The Union Home Minister had come to Jammu and Kashmir to tell the people that the government is aware of their needs and stands by them in all their endeavors.

His assertion that laptops have replaced stones and strike culture has ended in Kashmir was a snub to all such leaders, who used to claim that Kashmir would burn once Article 370–a temporary provision in the Constitution–is scrapped.

Shah reaching out to all the communities was an indication that the Government of India believes in equality for all and that no one will be left out. (ANI)

Russian President Vladimir Putin

Putin Threatens Harsh Reprisals After Crimea Bridge Attack

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday warned of “harsh” reprisals after the Crimea bridge attack on Saturday.

In a television appearance Monday, Putin said Russia had struck military and infrastructure targets across Ukraine following the Crimea bridge blast.
Putin threatened further “harsh” responses that correspond “to the level of threat to the Russian Federation, have no doubt about it,” while accusing Kyiv of “terrorism.”

In what appears to be the heaviest wave of missile and rocket attacks since the opening week of the war, Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities were rocked by deadly Russian strikes on Monday.

Officials said they targeted critical energy infrastructure and several regions of Ukraine are now suffering power outages.

The Kremlin said today that a huge missile salvo across Ukraine launched by its forces was within the framework of what Russia calls its “special military operation” in Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Ukraine has not claimed responsibility for the attack on the Kerch bridge, a key link between the Russian mainland and Crimea.

Eleven sites of critical infrastructure have been struck in Kyiv and eight other regions of Ukraine, according to Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal.

Some of the regions are experiencing blackouts,” Shmyhal said. “We must be ready for temporary disruptions with power connections and water supply.”

A senior Ukrainian military official has said “generations of Russians will answer” for a wave of explosions that struck multiple Ukrainian cities on Monday.

“The Russians are shameful losers. Did you intend to scare us?” Andrii Yermak, head of President Zelenskyy’s office, said of the attacks.

“There will be a harsh response to every hit. You will be held responsible for every death and suffering. And not only you. Entire generations of Russians will answer,” Yermak said on Telegram.

“We will continue to destroy everyone who comes to Ukraine with weapons. These hits make us even angrier. These hits will only speed up our progress.

“We are not afraid. We are only getting angrier and more accurate,” Yermak added.

Powerful explosions rang across Kyiv on Monday morning, leaving multiple people dead. At the same time, regional authorities also reported missile and rocket attacks in Kharkiv, Lviv, Mykolaiv and Dnipropetrovsk, partly aimed at critical civilian infrastructure.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the missile strikes targeted Ukraine’s energy facilities and its people.

“They have especially chosen the time and the targets to create the most damage,” he said while standing outside his office in the center of Kyiv.

Moscow wanted to destroy Ukraine’s “energy system,” Zelenskyy said, adding that the Ukrainians shot down 38 incoming projectiles. He urged people to stay in shelters on Monday.

Further south, a Ukrainian official also confirmed that Russian missiles are targeting power infrastructure in the Mykolaiv region.

“They are hitting the infrastructure, trying to leave us without electricity,” Vitalii Kim, head of the Mykolaiv regional military administration, said on Telegram.

After reports of Russian missile attacks across Ukraine on Monday morning, Kyiv’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said on Twitter that Russian President Vladimir Putin “will not break Ukraine down.”

“Putin’s only tactic is a terror on peaceful Ukrainian cities, but he will not break Ukraine down. This is also his response to all appeasers who want to talk with him about peace: Putin is a terrorist who talks with missiles,” Kuleba tweeted.

Amid multiple explosions in Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities early Monday, Zelenskyy said Russia was trying to annihilate Ukraine.

The series of Russian missiles launched at Ukraine on Monday morning was aimed at “critical infrastructure to destroy the country’s energy supply,” according to a Ukrainian government official.

Kyrylo Tymoshenko, deputy head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, also warned Ukrainians to be prepared for blackouts.

“Power facilities from Lviv to Zaporizhzhia, Kyiv to Khmelnytskyi region, Dnipro and Vinnytsia, Ivano-Frankivsk region, Sumy region, Kharkiv region, Zhytomyr region, Kirovohrad, and the entire south are targeted,” Tymoshenko said on Telegram.

“This may affect the stability of the energy supply, so we need to be prepared for the consequences of such shelling, up to rolling blackouts,” he added.

The Ukrainian State Emergency Service said there is no electricity supply in five regions — Lviv, Poltava, Sumy, Kharkiv, and Ternopil — and power supply has been partially disrupted in the rest of the country.

Meanwhile, the G7 group of nations will hold an emergency meeting via video conference on Tuesday, the office of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz confirmed to CNN. Scholz is the current G7 president under its rotating leadership.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that he would address the meeting. “My speech is scheduled, in which I’ll tell about the terrorist attacks by [the Russian Federation], he said on Twitter.

The G7 consists of the seven leaders from some of the world’s largest economies: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Russia was indefinitely suspended from the group — then the G8 — in 2014 after its illegal annexation of Crimea.

At least 10 people have died and 60 are injured in Ukraine after a wave of Russian attacks across the country on Monday morning, police spokesperson Maryana Reva said in an interview on Ukrainian TV.

Multiple European political figures roundly condemned Russia’s spate of attacks on Ukrainian cities on Monday.

“Deeply shocked by Russia’s attacks on civilians in #Kyiv and other cities in Ukraine. Such acts have no place in (the) 21st century. I condemn them in the strongest possible terms,” the European Union’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell said. “We stand with Ukraine. Additional military support from the EU is on its way,” Borrell tweeted Monday.

“Again, Putin is massively terrorizing innocent civilians in Kyiv and other cities in [Ukraine]. (The Netherlands) condemns these heinous acts. Putin does not seem to understand that the will of the Ukrainian people is unbreakable. Ukraine remains determined, and we continue to support Ukraine,” Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte tweeted.

Belgium’s Prime Minister Alexander De Croo tweeted that the “bombardment of Kyiv and of civilian targets in many other cities is a reprehensible act by Russia. It is an unacceptable escalation of violence that strengthens Belgium’s resolve in supporting the people of Ukraine and their brave fight for a free and sovereign nation.”

“Shocking images are coming once again from Ukraine this morning! I strongly condemn Russian missile attacks against civilian targets and critical infrastructure in Ukraine. The only intention behind these attacks is to terrorize the civilian population. Stay strong Ukrainians!” tweeted Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Xavier Bettel.

Slovakian Prime Minister Eduard Heger tweeted that he condemns “today’s cowardly attacks of Russian forces on #civilians and civilian infrastructure in #Ukraine.

French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna also tweeted to condemn the attacks. “I condemn in the strongest terms today’s indiscriminate Russian strikes against Ukrainian cities. Intentionally targeting civilian populations is a war crime,” she said.

And Italy also reiterated its “unwavering and steadfast support for Ukraine, its people, and its resilience.”

The Italian foreign ministry said it was “horrified by the cowardly missile attacks which hit the center of Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities.” (ANI)

Delhi HC Against EC Decision To Freeze Sena

Uddhav Moves Delhi HC Against EC Decision To Freeze Sena Symbol

Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Monday moved the Delhi High Court against the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) decision to freeze the Election Symbol of Bow and Arrow.

The Writ Petition moved by Uddhav Thackeray seeking direction to quash the order passed by the Election Commission of India on October 8, freezing the election symbol of the Shivsena Political Party.

In the alternative, the petition seeks directions to consider and allot the symbol proposed by petitioner Uddhav without restricting the choice of the symbol from the list of free symbols notified by ECI.

After the Election Commission of India (ECI) froze the Shiv Sena’s election symbol of ‘bow and arrow’, the Uddhav Thackeray faction has also submitted the ‘Trishul’, ‘Mashaal’ and ‘Rising Sun’ symbols as their choices in ECI.

The plea stated that “Since bye-elections have been notified in the State of Maharashtra for 166-Andheri East constituency for which the last date of nominations is October 14, and the date of poll is November 3, grave prejudice will be caused to the petitioner and his party if the impugned order is not stayed.”

“While passing the impugned order, the Election Commission of India has failed to consider that from September 19 to October 8, there has been no change in circumstances regarding the claim set up by both the groups in respect of majority and control of the party,” the plea stated.

“Therefore, merely because a bye-election was announced in Andheri East Constituency, wherein admittedly Eknathrao Sambhaji Shinde (Present Chief Minister, Government of Maharashtra) or his group are not even setting up any candidate, there was no reason for ECI to change the existing status quo regarding the use of name and Symbol by the Petitioner by freezing the symbol of the party,” the plea further stated.

The plea also stated that on January 23, 2018, the Organizational Elections of the Party for the term 2018-2023 were held as per Rule V of the Rules and Regulations of Shiv Sena, which mandates intra-party elections to be conducted once in five years. In the said elections, the Petitioner, Uddhav Thackeray, was unanimously elected as the Shivsena Paksha Pramukh of the Party.

Notably, EC passed the interim order saying in Andheri East bye polls, neither of the two groups shall be permitted to use the symbol “Bow and Arrow”, reserved for “Shiv Sena”.

The Commission’s ruling came amid the ongoing symbol war between the Uddhav Thackeray camp and rival Eknath Shinde camp. (ANI)

Auto Sales Vrooms 57% During Navratri Period

Overall auto retail sales saw a massive jump of 57 percent during the recently concluded Navratri period as compared to that of the last year, data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) on Monday revealed.

All categories also showed high growth with two-wheelers, three-wheelers, commercial vehicles (CV), passenger vehicles (PV), and tractors increasing by 52 percent, 115 percent, 48 percent, 70 percent, and 58 percent, respectively.

“For the first time, FADA is releasing Navratri auto retail figures. When compared to Navratri 2019 (which was prior to Covid), total retails increased by 16 percent. Here too, all categories showed positive momentum with 2W, 3W, CV, PV, and tractors growing by 4 percent, 31 percent, 37 percent, 59 percent, and 90 percent, respectively,” said Manish Raj Singhania, President, of FADA.

Navratri was celebrated between September 26 and October 5 this year.

“Navratri retails clearly shows that customers were back in showrooms with all guns blazing after a gap of three years. In fact, the 2W category which was continuously showing weakness when compared to pre-Covid months also registered a single-digit growth,” Singhania added.

Industry insiders feel the trend is likely to continue in the ongoing festive period.

“We now hope that this trend continues till Deepawali so that apart from PV dealers who will see a decade-high during this festive, the 2W dealers also have a good season and hence helps them liquidate their stock which they have built in anticipation of a good festive,” Singhania opined.

The data does not have figures from Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Lakshadeep, and Telangana.

Vehicle retail data has been collated as on October 2022 in collaboration with the ministry of road transport & highways and has been gathered from 1,339 out of 1,411 RTOs.

A total of 5,39,227 units were sold during Navratri as against 3,42,459 units sold during the auspicious nights period last year.

A total of 3,69,020 two-wheelers were sold in this year’s Navratri as against 2,42,213 units sold in Navratri 2021.

A little more than while 1,10,500 passenger vehicles were sold during this time as compared to its 64,850 in Navratri 2021. (ANI)

Sanjay Rauut’s custody was previously extended on October 4 for 14 days (till October 10, today) by a Special Court in Mumbai.
Raut was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on August 1 in connection with alleged financial irregularities in the redevelopment of the Patra Chawl in suburban Goregaon in Mumbai.

After being in the ED’s custody initially, the Shiv Sena leader was sent to judicial custody for 14 days on August 8. On August 22, a special PMLA court extended Raut’s custody till September 5 which was further extended till September 19 and then till October 3 and 10.

On June 28 this year, Sanjay Raut was summoned by the ED in connection with the prevention of the money laundering case pertaining to the Rupees 1,034 crore Patra Chawl land scam.

Back in August, the wife of Shiv Sena MP was also summoned by the agency in connection with the Patra Chawl land case.

The MP’s wife Varsha Raut was summoned by the central agency after the ED officials raided the Shiv Sena leader’s home and after detaining and questioning him (Sanjay Raut) for several hours, arrested him.

Raut is a close aide of former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.

According to sources, ED officials seized Rs 11.50 lakhs of unaccounted cash from his residence during the raids. Soon after the ED officials detained him in connection with the Patra Chawl land scam case, the Shiv Sena leader said that he “won’t be cowed down”.

Raut is being probed in connection with the re-development of Mumbai’s Patra Chawl.

In April this year, the ED had attached immovable properties worth Rs 11.15 crore, including a flat at Dadar, held by Sanjay Raut’s wife Varsha, and eight land parcels at Kihim near Alibag, jointly held by the latter with Swapna Patkar. (ANI)

Modi Lays Foundation Stone Of Airport in Gujarat’s Bharuch

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday highlighted the development of Gujarat’s Bharuch as he laid the foundation stone of a new airport in the region and said there would be a new momentum to growth due to the “double engine” government in the state.

“After doing so much business, and business from the country and abroad, now when the airport is being founded, the development is about to get a new momentum and a new flight. And when there is a double-engine government of Narendra-Bhupendra, then the airport work will also be completed faster,” said PM Modi.
He expressed happiness over the construction of the airport and said, “I am happy to announce that now along with industrial development, Bharuch will also be home to an international airport. This airport will play an important role in increasing exports from Gujarat.”

He stressed that Bharuch won’t need to depend on airports in other areas as it will have one of its own. “Bharuch won’t need to depend on Baroda or Surat airport. Now Bharuch will have its own airport. So, today, the foundation stone is being laid to build a new airport at Ankleshwar,” he said.

PM Modi also noted that his home state has now gotten its first drug park. “Today Gujarat has got the first bulk drug park, and that too in my Bharuch. Several plants related to the chemical sector have also been inaugurated today,” he said.

Recalling the late SP Supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav in his speech, PM Modi highlighted his relationship with Yadav.

“Mulayam Singh Yadav ji’s demise is a huge loss for the nation. I had a special relationship with him. When BJP declared me as PM candidate in 2014, I spoke to all opposition leaders. He gave me his blessings in the way of his advice which has stayed with me even today,” he added.

PM Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of projects worth over Rs 8,000 crore in Amod town of Bharuch district.

In another step towards making India “Aatmanirbhar” (self-reliant) in the pharmaceutical sector, PM Modi laid the foundation stone of a bulk drug park at Jambusar. In 2021-22, bulk drugs accounted for over 60 percent of total pharmaceutical imports. (ANI)

Journalist on PFI Rise and Ban

Popular Front of India is an Islamic Version of RSS

KA Shaji, a South India-based journalist who writes on politics, human rights and environment, traces the rise of Popular Front and its communal agenda

Going by the genesis, a collective called Muslim Cultural Centre (MCC) was formed during the late 1980s in the Nadapuram region of Kozhikode district in north Kerala by certain wealthy Muslims of the region to fight the might of the agricultural labourers’ union of the CPI (M). Over the years, the MCC turned into the prototype of the National Democratic Front (NDF), which was later rechristened as the Popular Front of India (PFI).

In Nadapuram, most agricultural labourers were Hindu Ezhavas and tenants of wealthy Muslims. Gulf money also contributed to the financial growth of Muslims there while the agricultural workers were given peanuts. Most Muslim landlords were traditionally activists of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML).

CPI (M) firebrand leader A Kanaran inspired the agricultural workers to engage frequently in class struggles against the landlords. The struggles seeking solutions to injustice and inequalities, later evolved into communal clashes. Thereby ideology and politics disappeared, communal polarisations erupted and became entrenched. The clashes turned into Hindu-Muslim conflicts.

When the Ayodhya movement gained strength in the 1990s, MCC became the Babri Masjid Protection Committee. Its leaders wanted a state-level permanent mechanism to mobilise Muslim youth against both the BJP-RSS and CPI (M). On November 14, 1993, the NDF was formed. The shilanyas at Ayodhya created resentment among the Muslims in Kerala. But, IUML, the moderate alliance partner of the Congress in the state, failed to address the anger. Movements initiated by Abdul Nasar Mahdani and Ibrahim Sulaiman Sait were dubbed cult worshipping. In this context, the old MCC activists of Nadapuram coordinated radical elements across the state so as to ‘protect Islam’.

The NDF and PFI both began as cadre-based outfits. They recruited only fundamentalists. They organised closed-door training sessions. There was no transparency in their activities. While terming the BJP-RSS as their main enemies, they always resisted CPI (M) and left politics tooth and nail too. They attacked the IUML, accusing it of being a pack of cowards. It blamed the Congress for all the issues faced by Muslims in the country.

ALSO READ: ‘Every Patriotic, Peace-Loving Supports Ban on PFI’

The organisation infused hatred against other religions among young Muslims recruited from madrasas across the state. Religious teachings imparted to them declared that there is nothing beyond Islam’s teachings. Indeed, the NDF’s first target was not BJP or RSS, but those Muslims who were involved in inter-religious marriages. Many lost their lives, others limbs. It found blasphemy as the most heinous crime. The hand of a Christian professor was chopped off for alleged blasphemy.

The NDF or PFI have never been democratic. They are flush with funds but its source has largely been unknown. They ruined the IUML in the southern districts of Kerala and targeted moderate Muslim leaders. Many BJP and CPI (M) cadres were also killed. There have been murders, chopping off limbs, attacks against inter-faith marriages. The PFI played a pivotal role in the communal riot at Marad beach in Kozhikode. In recent years, it became a pan-India organisation through mergers and expansions.

In fact, the PFI is an Islamic version of the RSS. Banning it alone would not meet any purpose. It has to be opposed politically and ideologically. Democratic engagements with the community by secular forces is the sole and ultimate solution.

Indeed, the ban and the arrests of their members reek of BJP-RSS vested interests. But it is also true that the PFI mobilised Muslims on communal grounds. It wanted Muslims in the country not to have any democratic engagement with secular or democratic forces. Communists and the Congress were its proclaimed enemies. It favoured militancy. It has actually jeopardised the ‘Muslim situation’ in India. It has made ordinary Muslims insecure. It has caused severe damage to the Muslim cause and identity.

However, the entire syndrome exposes the limits of minority communalism. A single police action by a majority government can destroy any minority communalism build-up. But the ordinary Muslim will have to pay the price. They will get further alienated.

As long as the BJP-RSS is in power, no ultra-fundamentalist or rabidly communal Hindu organisation can be banned in India. They all have government support. The previous bans on RSS failed to yield any results. Democratic mobilisation of people in secular platforms is the only option to fight the BJP-RSS. Political education can help India survive the BJP-RSS. Minority organisations must stand solidly with secular, inclusive and democratic forces.

Yogi Condoles Mulayam's Death

Yogi Condoles Mulayam’s Death, 3-Day State Mourning

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over the demise of veteran politician Mulayam Singh Yadav on Monday, saying his death has ended an era of struggle and socialism in the country.

Adityanath also announced a three-day state mourning and said the veteran leader’s last rites would be conducted with full state honors.
“The death of former UP Chief Minister Shri Mulayam Singh Yadav ji is extremely sad. His death has ended a prominent pillar of socialism and an era of struggle. I pray to God for peace to the departed soul and my condolences to the bereaved family and supporters,” the chief minister tweeted in Hindi.

In another tweet, Adityanath said he has talked to Mulayam Singh Yadav’s son and Samajwadi President Akhilesh Yadav on phone and expressed his condolences.

Mulayam Singh Yadav passed away at a Gurugram Hospital on Monday due to age-related ailments. For a long time, the veteran politician had remained synonymous with the politics of the state. He saw UP go through many ups and downs during his five-decade-long career.

He was so well-versed in the politics of the state that he was fondly called “Netaji”.

He was born November 22, 1939, in Saifai village of Etawah district, and rose quickly in politics to become the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh thrice. He also served in the Union Government once as the Defence Minister.

After stepping into politics at the age of 28 as an MLA in 1967, he was elected 9 more times to the UP assembly. He also remained Lok Sabha MP 7 times. He founded the Samajwadi Party on October 4, 1992, and soon turned it into a regional party based in Uttar Pradesh. (ANI)
