Cong Delegation Meets EC, Seeks Ban On Opinion Polls

A Congress party delegation on Wednesday met the Election Commission seeking a ban on the opinion polls before the elections.

Congress leader Rajeev Shukla, who was a part of the delegation, said that the opinion polls try to predict the results of the elections in a biased way.
He said that the party has also asked for proper security of ballot papers, especially in Gujarat.

Congress also alleged that when Prime Minister Narendra Modi or any other big BJP leader comes for election campaigning in a state, the opposition leaders aren’t allowed to enter with their helicopters.

Polling for 68 assembly seats in Himachal Pradesh was held on November 12, with the state recording a 75.6 percent turnout, breaking the 2017 record, whose results are scheduled to be declared on December 8

Meanwhile, the Assembly elections in Gujarat are scheduled to be held in two phases on December 1 and December 5, whose results will be declared on December 8, coinciding with that of the Himachal Assembly polls. (ANI)

Delhi: AAP Candidate Booked For Flaunting Revolver

Delhi police on Wednesday registered a case against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate for the upcoming Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections Joginder Singh after a video of him brandishing a revolver while dancing went viral on social media.

“A case has been registered under the Arms Act against a man named Joginder Singh alias Bunty, who is an AAP candidate for MCD polls from Ward-19, Swaroop Nagar, as he was seen in a viral video flaunting his revolver while dancing,” Delhi Police said in a statement.
Officials said that they received the video clip through social media, in which a group of people were seen dancing.

“While one of them, wearing a Yellow t-shirt – the police identified as AAP candidate Joginder Singh – took out a revolver, brandished it in the air, and then pointed it out towards the camera while dancing,” the police said in the FIR against Singh.

On the basis of this, a case under section 25 of the Arms Act 1959 has been registered against Joginder Singh at Swaroop Nagar police station. We are further looking into the case, they said.

Singh is an AAP candidate from Ward-19 (Swaroop Nagar) for the upcoming MCD elections.

The high-stakes polls for the 250-ward MCD are scheduled on December 4 and, the counting of votes will be done on December 7.

The civic polls are shaping up to be a two-way contest between the BJP, which currently holds the civic reins in the national capital, and the AAP, which is in power in the national capital. (ANI)

Mainpuri Election Scene Heats Up As Yogi Set To Enter Campaign

The heat quotient of the high stakes Mainpuri elections is going go up further as UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath enters the campaign with his first public meeting in Mainpuri scheduled to take place on November 28.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has already unleashed its army of MLAs and ministers to fight the Samajwadi party in its traditional bastion.
CM Yogi is going to address a public meeting at Narsingh Yadav Inter College, Karhal. It is expected that Yogi Adityanath will try to influence the minds of the people of Mainpuri continuously till 3 December.

The tension of Akhilesh Yadav, who is facing political heat in the Mainpuri by-election, is going to increase after the arrival of Yogi. In fact, CM Yogi Adityanath is starting his first public meeting from the constituency of Akhilesh Yadav. In such a situation, the SP President will have to put more emphasis on Karhal, which is considered an SP stronghold.

Earlier, Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya held two meetings in Mainpuri. Deputy CM Brijesh Pathak has been holding meetings in Mainpuri for two consecutive days to turn voter mood in BJP’s favor. Apart from this, Party President Chaudhary Bhupendra Singh and General Secretary Organization Dharampal Singh are leaving no stone unturned to influence the workers.

The Lok Sabha by-election in Mainpuri is a high-profile one. The seat is witnessing a main contest between BJP candidate former MP Raghuraj Singh Shakya and Dimple Yadav, the wife of Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav. Earlier this by-election was considered easy for Dimple Yadav.

At present, both parties are putting their full force into the campaign. Late Mulayam Singh Yadav was a continuous MP from here. However, in the last Lok Sabha elections, Mulayam’s victory margin was very low. Since then, it was believed that after Mulayam, Mainpuri would not be easy for the SP.

This became clear only in the by-elections that were held after the death of Mulayam Singh Yadav. If political pundits are to be believed, now the matter is 50-50. During a conversation in the Jaswantnagar assembly, an elderly voter admitted that this time the fight is tough. This is the reason Samajwadi Party which used to hold one or two meetings in Mainpuri and only local workers used to ask for votes, is doing a much bigger campaign.

Presently the situation is that Akhilesh Yadav himself is visiting the same village many times in his assembly. Apart from them, all the big leaders of SP including Dimple Yadav, Shivpal Yadav, and Ramgopal Yadav are campaigning vigorously.

Since the nomination, party candidate Raghuraj Singh Shakya has been campaigning intensively from 7 am to 10 pm. A local BJP leader Bharat Deep, said, ” Our candidate has visited most of the Mainpuri Lok Sabha by going street by street. They say that the public has now made up its mind for a change. The support of the people of Mainpuri is with him.” (ANI)

BJP MP Welcomes Maken Quitting As Cong Rajasthan Incharge

A day after senior Congress leader and former Union minister Ajay Maken stepped down as the party’s Rajasthan in-charge, BJP MP Kirodi Lal Meena welcomed his decision and said he would have been stuck between two raging bulls had he remained in the post.

Maken’s move came amid a continuing and bitter tussle between Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and his former deputy Sachin Pilot.
The tussle came to a head again in the lead-up to the polls to elect the Congress national president, as Gehlot, who has initially seen a frontrunner for the post, pulled out in the face of a rebellion by his loyalist MLAs who wanted him to continue as CM.

Maken had earlier written to octogenarian Dalit leader Mallikarjun Kharge, who was recently elected the party’s first non-Gandhi national president in 24 years, expressing his unwillingness to continue in his post as the Congress’ Rajasthan in-charge.

Speaking to ANI after presiding over a function in Dausa, Meena said, “If Maken hadn’t taken this step, he would have been stuck in the fight between two raging bulls.”

The BJP Rajya Sabha MP added that with the next Assembly elections in the state not too far away, the infighting in the party (between Gehlot and Pilot) will only get more intense in the coming days. (ANI)

SC To Hear Plea For Lifetime Ban On Convicted MPs, MLAs From Contesting Elections

The Supreme Court on Tuesday posted for next week hearing in a plea seeking to debar convicted Members of Parliament and State Legislative Assemblies from contesting elections for life.

A bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justice Hima Kohli and JB Pardiwala said that it will hear the matter next week as it was hearing other matters.
Senior advocate Vijay Hansaria, who was appointed amicus curiae to assist the top court in the matter, told the bench, “I am requesting, some urgent orders are required.”

The bench said it will hear the matter next week.

A recent status report submitted before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) stated that there are 51 MPs and 71 MLAs, sitting and former, who stand accused by the agency of offense under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

The report does not specify exactly how many of those are sitting MPs/MLAs and how many are former MPs/ MLAs.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has also submitted a similar report stating that a total of 121 cases are pending trial against sitting and former MPs and MLAs.

The number of MPs involved in those cases is 51 out of which 14 are sitting, 37 are former and 5 are deceased. The report further stated that 112 MLAs are involved in CBI cases out of which 34 are sitting, 78 are former and 9 are deceased.

The number of cases pending investigation against MPs and MLAs by the CBI is 37, the report of the CBI submitted.

Hansaria also filed a report pursuant to an order passed by the court seeking a status report relating to the pendency and grant of sanctions for prosecution, the expected time for completion of the investigation, and reasons for the delay in the same.

In his report Hansaria highlighted a “glaring case of inordinate delay” in the trial of cases against lawmakers, submitting that many cases were pending for over five years.

He sought directions to ensure that courts dealing with case against lawmakers should exclusively try such issues.

The plea filed by advocate Ashwini Upadhyay sought direction that convicted parliamentarians and State legislators, former and sitting, should be disqualified and banned for life from contesting elections to Parliament or Assemblies.

The plea also sought speedy disposal of cases against them and pointed out that while judges and babus were suspended for such activities, politicians were condoned by the law.

As of now, convicted politicians are banned from polls for six years.

The Central government in an affidavit filed in 2020 had rejected the idea of a lifetime ban on convicted persons contesting elections or forming or becoming an office-bearer of a political party.

It had said that disqualification under the Representation of the People Act of 1951 for the period of six years was enough for legislators.

Hansaria had earlier filed the report in the apex court and informed that a total of 4,984 criminal cases against former and sitting MPs and MLAs are pending before various sessions and magistrate courts across the country, an increase of 862 such cases in the last three years.

In August 2021 the top court directed that no prosecution against sitting former MPs and MLAs will be withdrawn without the permission of the High Court of the concerned state.

It had further directed that judges hearing the criminal cases against MPs and MLAs in Special Courts should continue in their current posts until further orders of the Supreme Court. (ANI)

Modi Visits Radha Soami Satsang In Punjab, Meets Dera Chief

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday visited the Radha Soami Satsang Beas Dera in Punjab and met with its head Baba Gurinder Singh Dhillon.

Punjab Cabinet Minister Brahm Shankar Jimpa received the prime minister at the airport.
Chief Secretary Vijay Kumar Janjua and DGP Gaurav Yadav were also present on the occasion.

PM Modi had met the Dera chief in Delhi early this year in February ahead of the Punjab assembly elections.

Earlier on Friday, PM Modi tweeted, “Tomorrow, 5th November I will have the honor of visiting the Radha Soami Satsang Beas. Under the leadership of Baba Gurinder Singh Dhillon Ji, the RSSB is at the forefront of numerous community service efforts.”

Later in the day, PM Modi will also be in poll-bound Himachal Pradesh where he will address rallies in Sundar Nagar and Solan.

“I look forward to being in Himachal Pradesh tomorrow, 5th November. I would be addressing rallies in Sundar Nagar and Solan. @BJP4Himachal is going to the people with the proven track record of development and highlighting the pro-people efforts of the double engine governments,” PM Modi tweeted on Friday.

Voting Begins For Assembly By-Elections In Seven Constituencies Across 6 States

The voting for Assembly by-elections in seven vacant seats spread across the states of Maharashtra, Haryana, Bihar, Telangana, Odisha, and Uttar Pradesh began on Thursday morning.

Polling is being held from 7 am to 6 pm amid tight security and the counting of votes will be conducted on November 6.
Bharatiya Janata Party is in a fierce contest with regional parties such as the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), the Samajwadi Party (SP), and the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in the Assembly by-polls in seven constituencies spread across six states.

The seven Assembly constituencies where the elections are taking place are 166-Andheri East from Maharashtra, 47-Adampur from Haryana, 93-Munugode from Telangana, 139-Gola Gokranath from Uttar Pradesh, and 46-Dhamnagar from Odisha.

The two constituencies of Bihar where the bye-elections are being conducted are 178-Mokama and 101-Gopalganj.

Mokama Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) Anant Kumar Singh was disqualified in July after his conviction in a case, while BJP’s Subhash Singh, who held the Gopalganj seat, passed away in August.

The Andheri East, Gola Gokrannath, and Dhamnagar constituencies, too, fell vacant due to the demise of their respective legislators.

The Shiv Sena’s Ramesh Latke died in May and BJP’s Arvind Giri and Bishnu Sethi both passed away in September.

In Haryana, the resignation of Kuldeep Bishnoi, and K Rajagopal Reddy in Telangana, led to vacancies in the Adampur and Munugode segments respectively.

The contest in Telangana’s Munugode Assembly constituency is crucial for all major parties in the State- the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) and Opposition parties Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress.

While 47 candidates are in the fray, the eye is on BJP’s Raj Gopal Reddy, former TRS MLA Kusukuntla Prabhakar Reddy, and Congress’ Palvai Sravanthi.

In Andheri East, the Uddhav Thackeray-led Sena faction has fielded Rutuja Latke, the wife of incumbent Sena MLA Ramesh Latke whose death in May necessitated the poll.

The BJP fielded Murji Patel, but he later withdrew his candidature after the party decided not to contest.

This will the first election after the revolt in the Shiv Sena by Eknath Shinde and 39 other legislators which led to the collapse of the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government.

For the Mokama by-polls, the BJP has fielded Sonam Devi p against RJD’s Neelam Devi, whose husband Anant Singh’s disqualification has necessitated the by-election.

Mokama is said to be the stronghold of Anant Singh since 2005. He won the seat twice on JD(U) tickets.

BJP has given the ticket to Kusum Devi, the wife of incumbent BJP MLA Subhash Singh while RJD has fielded Mohan Prasad Gupta for the Goapalgunj by-election.

Haryana’s Adampur seat is witnessing the contest between BJP, Congress, Indian National Lok Dal, and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Kuldeep Bishnoi’s son Bhavya is contesting the by-poll as the BJP candidate.

The Congress has fielded former Union minister Jai Prakash while the INLD picked Congress rebel Kurda Ram Nambardar as its candidate. Satender Singh is AAP’s candidate.

Kuldeep Bishnoi, son of the former Chief Minister of Haryana, Chaudhary Bhajan Lal, recently resigned from Congress and joined the BJP. Adampur’s seat fell vacant after Kuldeep Bishnoi resigned. Adampur seat is considered a stronghold of Bishnoi.

Meanwhile, eyeing the by-poll in Adampur, Panchayat, and Zila Parishad elections, AAP is trying to get a foothold in Haryana.

Bypolls to the Gola Gokarannath assembly constituency: The BJP has fielded his son Aman Giri while the Samajwadi Party (SP) has given a ticket to former MLA Vinay Tiwari.

The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has fielded Abanti Das for Odisha’s Dhamnagar by-polls while the BJP has fielded Suryabanshi Suraj Sthitaprajana the son of Bishnu Sethi, BJP MLA after whose death, the assembly seat fell vacant, as its candidate for the by-election.

The AAP is also in the fray and has given a ticket to Anwar Sheikh. (ANI)

Modi To Blow Poll Bugle In Himachal Today

Ahead of the Himachal Pradesh Assembly polls later in the year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to blow the poll bugle in the hill state on Thursday.

PM Modi is also scheduled to address a Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) rally in Mandi on September 24.
The BJP and BJYM in Himachal Pradesh have set the target to gather one lakh youth for the rally.

“The Prime Minister will also address public meetings in Chamba and will also inaugurate the AIIMS in Bilaspur as their dates will be finalized soon,” president of Himachal Pradesh BJP Suresh Kashyap said.

Kashyap said, “the party is readying the campaigners and the list of big leaders who would campaign for the Assembly elections will also be finalized.”

He further informed that in order to create an electoral atmosphere in the state, Union ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, Smriti Irani, and Kiren Rijiju are also scheduled to arrive here before the announcement of the election.

On being asked to finalize the tickets of the party for the Assembly elections, he said that the party election management and other committee meetings will be held soon.

“The party is leading ahead in the campaign to reach the people of the state,” he said adding that a number of Congress leaders are in touch with the state BJP to join the saffron party. (ANI)
