Cong MLA Promises 100-ft Statue Of Tipu Sultan In Mysuru

Karnataka Congress MLA Tanveer Sait on Thursday promised a 100 feet statue of Tipu Sultan in Srirangapatna of Karnataka’s Mysuru.

Sait, who was elected MLA from Narasimharaja constituency, said the statue would stand as a symbol of the “true history” of Tipu Sultan for the coming generations. Claiming that the history around the warrior has been “distorted” by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.
“A 100-feet-tall statue of Tipu Sultan will be erected in Mysuru or Srirangapatna which will stand as a symbol of the actual history around him. The BJP government has been distorting the history around Tipu Sultan and is bent on running his legacy down. Hence, there was an urgent need to build this statue,” Sait said while taking part in the Tipu Kannada Rajyotsava in Mysuru on Thursday.

He said, “Despite the ban on erecting idols in Islam, I will still erect a statue of Tipu, to tell the truth to the next generations.”

Former chief minister Siddaramaiah also reacted to the announcement, claiming that the BJP was busy distorting the history around the 18th-century warrior.

“Why can’t the statue of Tipu Sultan be built? Does he not deserve a statue? The BJP always distorts history. One should remember what they said about Narayan Guru, Ambedkar and others. They always twist and falsify facts,” Siddaramaiah said.

Popularly known as the Tiger of Mysore, Tipu Sultan has been the subject of controversy in the state, especially since 2015 when the BJP and the Congress fought over the need to celebrate the 18th-century ruler’s birthday.

During the Congress rule in 2017, former chief minister Siddaramaiah announced the celebration of Tipu Jayanti on November 10.

However, in 2018, Uttara Kannada MP and then Union minister Ananthkumar Hegde condemned the state government’s decision to celebrate Tipu Sultan’s birth anniversary.

According to documented history, Tipu Sultan fought against the British and died in 1799 while defending his capital Srirangapatna (present-day Mandya).

The celebration of the 18th-century ruler’s birth anniversary had pitted the BJP against the Congress, with several party leaders condemning the grand old party.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday unveiled the ‘Statue of Prosperity’, the 108-feet bronze statue of Bengaluru founder Nadaprabhu Kempegowda.

The statue has been built to commemorate the contribution of Nadaprabhu Kempegowda, the founder of the city, towards the growth of Bengaluru.

“Conceptualized and sculpted by Ram V Sutar of Statue of Unity fame, 98 tonnes of bronze and 120 tonnes of steel have gone into the making of this statue,” the PMO said. (ANI)

World Considers India As Bright Spot: Modi At Invest Karnataka Summit

Despite the world going through a phase of ‘Global crisis’, the world considers India as a “bright spot” as we continue our initiatives to strengthen the fundamentals of our economy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said during his virtual address in Karnataka.

“Although it is a time of global crisis, economists and experts across the world are describing India as a bright spot. We continue to work on our fundamentals to strengthen our economy. The free trade deals that have been signed give the world a glimpse of our preparedness,” PM Narendra Modi said during his virtual inaugural address at Invest Karnataka 2022 Summit
.
He said that India has eased the investments by rationalising the laws instead of making them more stringent.

“We’ve freed our investors from red tapism and given them a red carpet of opportunities. We encouraged them in various sectors that were earlier closed to private investments such as defence, drones, space and geospatial mapping,” PM Modi said adding that the New India now focuses on bold reforms, big infrastructure, and the best talent in the country.

Talking further, the Prime Minister said that India has set up a benchmark for the world when it comes to renewable energy as “our potency for renewable energy increased three folds in the last eight years and that of Solar energy up to 20 times.”

Remarking that the investment in India means “Investment for the Inclusion, Democracy, World, a better and a cleaner-safer planet,” PM Modi lauded the youth of the country stating that the nation is moving forward with its attempts.

“The youth of India has made more than 100 unicorns here and in the last eight years, they have successfully launched more than 80 thousand new startups,” he added mentioning the aim of the PM-GatiShakti National Master Plan.

He said that the PM-GatiShakti NMP aims at ‘integrated infrastructure development in the country.

In his address, PM Modi also praised Karantaka and the “double engine government” here for making it possible for setting up business startups.

“It is the place where there is both tradition and technology along with a unique confluence of nature and culture. When we talk of talent and technology, the first thing that comes to mind is the brand Bengaluru, which has now been established worldwide,” he said.

The Invest Karnataka 2022, Global Investors Meet is a three-day programme and has more than 80 speaker sessions aiming at attracting prospective investors and setting up a development agenda for the next decade.

According to a previously released official statement by the PMO, the speakers available at the programme included some of the top industry leaders including Kumar Mangalam Birla, Sajjan Jindal, and Vikram Kirloskar among others. Along with this, a number of business exhibitions with more than three hundred exhibitors, and country sessions would run parallelly.

The global scale of the event is expected to give Karnataka an opportunity to showcase its culture to the world as well. (ANI)

Telangana: Free Education, Books In State-Run Institutions

After Telangana was carved out of Andhra Pradesh and a new state was formed, the state government made it a point to strengthen the education sector.

The government has been providing free books and study materials for the students and giving them the best facilities in government schools and colleges.

The Telangana government is currently operating 188 residential educational institutions in English, Urdu, and Telugu medium for Classes 1 to 10, Intermediate and Degree Colleges.

Out of this, 69 institutions are for only boys, 103 institutions are for only girls and 16 are co-education institutions. Besides providing free education, the government also provides free uniforms, books, and mid-day meals for students.

Moreover, the government is giving the best computer and sciences laboratory facilities for students in government schools.

Speaking to ANI, Sameera Begum, a student of BJR girls’ junior college said, “We are getting study materials for free, and for this, I am very thankful to the state government for providing such a good opportunity to study here.”

Kathija Fathima from Babu Jagjivan College said, “I have all the facilities in the college. We are provided with free books and have a good education.”

Shereen Fathima, studying BiPC thanked the state government for the facilities provided to them. (ANI)

Split Verdict In Hijab Case, Matter To Be Placed Before CJI

The Supreme Court on Thursday pronounced a split verdict in the Karnataka Hijab ban case.

A bench of justices Hemant Gupta and Sudhanshu Dhulia pronounced the judgement today.
Justice Hemant Gupta dismissed the petitions against the hijab ban, while Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia allowed them.

One of the lawyers representing the petitioner said that the matter would be placed before the Chief Justice of India and he would decide whether a new bench would hear the matter or the matter gets referred to a larger bench.

Justice Hemant Gupta dismissed appeals challenging the Karnataka High Court’s order which had upheld the state government’s order to ban wearing hijabs in educational institutions of the state

Justice Gupta said, “There is a divergence of opinion. In my order, I have framed 11 questions. First is whether the appeal should be referred to the Constitution Bench.”

Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia allowed the appeals and set aside the Karnataka High Court order.

“It’s a matter of choice, nothing more nothing less,” Justice Dhulia said while pronouncing the order.

The apex court had earlier reserved its order on various petitions challenging Karnataka High Court upholding the ban on hijab in educational institutes.

The arguments in the matter went on for 10 days in which 21 lawyers from the petitioners’ side and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, Additional Solicitor General KM Nataraj, Karnataka Advocate General Prabhuling Navadgi argued for the respondents.

The court was hearing various pleas against Karnataka HC’s judgement upholding the Karnataka Government’s decision to direct educational institutes to prescribe uniforms in educational institutes.

Addressing the court, Senior Advocate Dushyant Dave, in his rejoinder submission had said that the Karnataka Government Circular which enforced the dress code has no reference to the Popular Front of India (PFI).

Various petitioners have approached the apex court challenging the Karnataka HC order upholding the Karnataka government’s order which directs strict enforcement of schools and colleges’ uniform rules.

One of the appeals in the top court has alleged “step-motherly behaviour of government authorities which has prevented students from practising their faith and resulted in an unwanted law and order situation”.

The appeal said the High Court in its impugned order “had vehemently failed to apply its mind and was unable to understand the gravity of the situation as well as the core aspect of the Essential Religious Practices enshrined under Article 25 of the Constitution of India”.

A bench of Karnataka High Court comprising Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi, Justice Krishna S Dixit, and Justice JM Khazi had earlier held that the prescription of uniform is a reasonable restriction that students could not object to and dismissed various petitions challenging a ban on hijab in education institutions saying they are without merit.

The hijab row erupted in January this year when the Government PU College in Udupi allegedly barred six girls wearing the hijab from entering. Following this, the girls sat in protest outside the college over being denied entry.

After this, boys from several colleges in Udupi started attending classes wearing saffron scarves. This protest spread to other parts of the state as well leading to protests and agitations in several places in Karnataka.

As a result, the Karnataka government said that all students must adhere to the uniform and banned both hijab and saffron scarves till an expert committee decided on the issue.

On February 5, the pre-University education board released a circular stating that the students could only wear the uniform approved by the school administration and that no other religious attire would be allowed in colleges. (ANI)

Babiya, The Divine, Crocodile Of Ananthapura Lake Passes Away

Babiya, a crocodile that lived on the offerings of devotees at the Ananthapura lake temple near Manjeswaram in Kasargod district died on Sunday night.

The crocodile is believed to be over 70 years old and did not harm devotees who ventured near it. The crocodile ate the temple Prasadam offered to it by devotees, hence earning the title ‘Vegetarian Crocodile.’
“Babiya appeared in the temple soon after a British soldier shot a temple crocodile. She was given food after the pujas in the morning and evening. The devotees also made offerings to her. Lots of devotees and tourists came to see Babiya,” temple representatives said.

As per the officials, she was undergoing treatment for age-related ailments and was found dead on Sunday night.

Many devotees of the temple came to offer homage. She was cremated in the temple this noon.

Hearing about the animal’s demise, Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare in Karnataka Shobha Karandlaje said, “Babiya, the god’s own crocodile of Sri Anantapura Lake temple has reached Vishnu Padam. The divine crocodile lived in the temple’s lake for over 70 years by eating the rice and jaggery prasadam of Sri Ananthapadmanabha Swamy and guarded the temple. May she attain Sadgati, Om Shanti!”

“Devotees turned up to pay their last respects to Babiya. For over seven decades at Ananthapura Lake Temple, Babiya was the cynosure of all eyes,” she said in another tweet. (ANI)

National Games 2022: Srihari Wins Gold In 100m Freestyle Swimming

At the National Games 2022 in Gujarat on Saturday, Tokyo Olympian Srihari Nataraj won the men’s 100-meter freestyle swimming competition to win his sixth gold medal overall.

Srihari Nataraj of Karnataka competed at the Sardar Patel Aquatics Complex in Rajkot and set a new National Games record with a time of 50.41 seconds to add to his collection of gold.
Sajan Prakash, a fellow Olympian from Kerala who has five gold, two silver, and a bronze medal from this competition, came in seventh in the 100m freestyle event.

At the National Games 2022, this was Srihari Nataraj’s second gold medal in freestyle swimming. He had previously won two gold medals in the backstroke and relay competitions, respectively.

SP Likhit took first place in the men’s 100-meter breaststroke competition, increasing Services’ total number of gold medals won to 45. With 30 gold medals, Haryana is in second place, and Maharashtra is third with 28.

With 23 gold medals, 19 of which came from the aquatics competitions, Karnataka has moved up to the fourth place.

With 22 gold medals, Tamil Nadu is sixth on the medal stand after defeating Karnataka in the 4×100-meter medley relay final.

At the Sabarmati Riverfront Sports Complex in Ahmedabad, Gujarat’s men defeated Madhya Pradesh 2-0 in the men’s soft tennis final, giving their state 11 gold medals overall.

Mohit Sherawat of Delhi won the men’s 81 kg gold at the Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar despite competing in his semifinal and final matches with a dislocated right shoulder.

Naveen John of Karnataka won the men’s 38 km time trial in the road cycling competition on the highway east of Gandhinagar, while Tongbram Monorama Devi of Manipur won the women’s 85 km road race by defeating Chayanika Gogoi of Assam and Pooja Baban Danole of Maharashtra.

At the Sardar Patel Aquatics Complex in Rajkot, the teams playing water polo pulled together to win the men’s and women’s gold medals. In a thrilling men’s final, Services came back to overcome Kerala 10-8 with two late goals, and in the women’s round-robin final, Maharashtra women defeated Kerala 5-3 to win.

With 134.22 points, S Vaishnavi of Tamil Nadu won the women’s artistic yogasana competition. Vaishnavi was flanked on the podium by the Maharashtra team of Chhakuli Bansilal Selokar (127.68) and Purva Shriram Kinare (126.68).

Karnataka defeated Gujarat 11-2 in the men’s hockey competition at the Major Dhyan Chand Stadium in Rajkot to advance to the semi-final matchup with Haryana, who defeated Tamil Nadu 3-0 in their own final-eight matchup. After a thrilling 1-1 tie in the regular game, Uttar Pradesh defeated West Bengal in a shootout. Maharashtra, who defeated Jharkhand in the other quarterfinal, will play Uttar Pradesh. (ANI)

Family Of Gauri Lankesh Joins Rahul For Bharat Jodo Yatra

Family members of journalist and activist Gauri Lankesh, who was murdered in 2017, joined Congress’ Bharat Jodo Yatra led by Rahul Gandhi on Friday.

Senior journalist and activist Gauri Lankesh was shot dead at her residence in Bengaluru’s Rajarajeshwari Naga on September 5, 2017.

Lankesh was the editor of the Gauri Lankesh Patrike, a magazine described as an ‘anti-establishment’ publication.

In November 2016, she was convicted of defamation and was sentenced to six months in jail, after she ran a piece in 2008 that Prahlad Joshi, a BJP MP from Dharwad, and Umesh Dushi, also of the BJP, found objectionable. However, the court also granted her bail and allowed her to appeal to a higher court.

Meanwhile, taking to Twitter, Rahul Gandhi shared a picture of the march with Gauri Lankesh’s mother and sister and said that he stands with Gauri Lankesh and countless others like her, who represent the true spirit of India.

“Gauri stood for Truth. Gauri stood for Courage. Gauri stood for Freedom. I stand for Gauri Lankesh and countless others like her, who represent the true spirit of India. Bharat Jodo Yatra is their voice. It can never be silenced,” he tweeted.

As the Bharat Jodo Yatra entered its 30th day on Friday, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and party workers resumed the padayatra from K Malenahalli in Mandya in Karnataka.

The padayatra will be concluded today at Adhichunchanagiri Matha Stadium.

On Thursday Sonia Gandhi joined the Party Padyatra in the Mandya district of Karnataka.

“We’ve sailed through storms in the past. Today, too, we will break the limits of all challenges and will together unite India,” Rahul tweeted and posted a photograph of him walking with his mother, his arm around her.

Rahul Gandhi is currently leading Bharat Jodo Yatra- the 3,500-km march from Kanyakumari to Kashmir, covering as many as 12 states. The Padyatra (march) will cover a distance of 25 km every day.

Sonia Joins Bharat Jodo Yatra In Karnataka’s Mandya

Congress interim president on Thursday morning joined the party’s ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ in Mandya in Karnataka.

Sonia Gandhi, who had arrived in Mysuru on Monday afternoon, arrived at the starting point of the padayatra, which resumed today on its after a two-day break for Dussehra. The Yatra entered its Karnataka leg on September 30.
The Congress supremo was seen walking in the company of her son and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and other Congress leaders.

She had earlier visited the Bheemanakolli Temple in Begur village and offered prayers on October 5.

Karnataka Congress chief DK Shivakumar today said that it was a matter of pride for veteran Sonia Gandhi to walk on the streets.

“After Vijayadashami, there will be Vijaya in Karnataka. We are proud that Sonia Gandhi has come to walk on the streets of Karnataka. We are coming to power in the state, and BJP is on the way to shutting its shop,” said DK Shivakumar.

Day 29 of the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ began with flag hoisting at 5:30 am at Exhibition Grounds, Mysuru, where Bharat Yatris joined in Dasara celebrations.

“The march resumed after an hour’s bus ride to padayatra start point near Mandya. Congress President will join around 800 am,” tweeted senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh this morning.

A bench of justices Hemant Gupta and Sudhanshu Dhulia reserved its judgment after the parties appearing from both sides concluded their arguments.

The arguments in the matter that continued for 10 days, involved 21 lawyers from the petitioner’s side and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, Additional Solicitor General KM Nataraj, Karnataka Advocate General Prabhuling Navadgi argued for the respondents.

The court was hearing several pleas against the Karnataka HC’s judgment upholding the state government’s decision to direct educational institutes to prescribe uniforms in educational institutes.

Countering the submission of the respondent, the petitioner’s lawyer Senior Advocate Salman Khurshid said that the respondent’s arguments mentioned the examples of France and Turkey. Khurshid further said that anything that expresses religious belief is not allowed to be displayed in public including a cross.
