Don’t Portray Religious Processions As Source Of Riots: SC

Don’t portray as if all religious processions are a source of riots, said the Supreme Court on Friday while dismissing a PILs seeking strict regulation of religious processions across the country.

A bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha declined the plea saying it is a law and order issue and can be taken care of by the State police and the District Magistrates.
The PIL filed by NGO Citizens for Justice and Peace demands guidelines to regulate religious processions across the country where people brandish weapons.

CJI Chandrachud said India’s cultural diversity varies from district to district and there can’t be uniform guidelines to regulate religious processions as he dismissed the PIL.

Senior advocate CU Singh appearing for the NGO told the bench that processions are taken out brandishing swords, and firearms during religious festivals.

He contended that riots have become common during such processions taken out during religious festivals.

Why do we want to portray it that riots take place during festival sessions, asked the bench.

The apex court said religious processions are taken out during the Ganpati festival in Maharashtra, but no riots occur.

“Why do you pick up some stray incidents of riots during a religious festival to paint everything with the same brush? Try to see the positive…,” said the bench.

The plea has sought strict prohibition of the display of arms and ammunition during such processions. (ANI)

Shah To Look Into Maharashtra-Karnataka Border Row Urgently

Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi on Friday said she and her party leaders were assured urgent resolution of the Maharashtra-Karnataka border row by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Speaking to ANI, Chaturvedi said, “The issues we discussed were with regards to Maharashtra and how a situation has been created at the borders with provocative statements coming from Karnataka Chief Minister (Basavaraj Bommai) and how Shah’s intervention in the matter is necessary.
“Due to the problem manufactured we saw our buses being damaged and our people not being allowed to enter their territory. So this kind of atmosphere will further lead to violence and break down of law and order.”

Lashing out at Bommai, Chaturvedi said, “We have asked him (Amit Shah) to ensure peace and urged him to control the Chief Minister Bommai’s outbursts and also ensure that there is no law and order issue in Karnataka as well as in Maharashtra.”

“We want him (Amit Shah) to find a faster resolution to this entire issue and he has promised that he will look into the matter urgently,” she added.

A meeting was held between Shah and a delegation of MPs of Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) parties (comprising the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena, the NCP and the Congress) over the Karnataka-Maharashtra border issue.

After the Karnataka-Maharashtra border dispute escalated, many untoward incidents took place in Belagavi on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, Bommai appealed to his Maharashtra counterpart Eknath Shinde to fight the border dispute issue legally as it is in court now. Bommai also raised concerns over the visit of the two ministers to Belagavi.

Belagavi is currently part of Karnataka but is claimed by Maharashtra. As per media reports, the long-running Karnataka-Maharashtra border dispute started back in 1953, after the Maharashtra government objected to the inclusion of 865 villages including Belagavi.

The villages are spread across Belagavi and the north-western and north-eastern regions of Karnataka – all bordering Maharashtra.

After the implementation of the State Reorganization Act, of 1956, the Maharashtra government demanded the readjustment of its border with Karnataka. Following this, a four-member committee was formed by both states.

Maharashtra government had expressed willingness to transfer Kannada-speaking 260 villages predominantly, but it was turned down by Karnataka.

Now, both Karnataka and Maharashtra governments have approached the Supreme Court to expedite the matter still pending. (ANI)

State Border Row: Karnataka, Maharashtra CMs Talk Over Phone

Amid the ongoing border dispute, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj S Bommai and his Maharashtra counterpart Eknath Shinde discussed the issue over a call on Tuesday and agreed that both states should maintain peace, law, and order.

“Maharashtra Chief Minister Shri Eknath Shinde had a telephonic discussion with me, we both agreed that there should be peace and law and order to be maintained in both the states,” tweeted Bommai.

The Karnataka CM stressed the harmonious relationship between the people of both states, saying that the border issue will be resolved legally in the Supreme Court.

“Since there is a harmonious relationship between the people of both the states, however, there is no change in our stand as far as the Karnataka border is concerned. And the legal battle will be pursued in Supreme court,” tweeted Bommai.

The border dispute between Maharashtra and Karnataka goes back to the implementation of the State Reorganization Act, of 1956. The then Maharashtra government had demanded the readjustment of its border with Karnataka.

Following this, a four-member committee was formed by both states. The Maharashtra government had expressed willingness to transfer predominantly 260 predominantly Kannada-speaking villages, but the proposal was turned down by Karnataka.

Both governments later approached the Supreme Court to expedite the matter.

However, the matter has remained pending to this day.

Earlier in the day, Bommai asserted that Karnataka will win the legal battle with Maharashtra over the border issue between the two states.

“Karnataka’s stand had nothing to do with elections, it is a long dragged issue by Maharashtra. These tensions are created because of Maharashtra. There is prosperity among the people of both states, this (Border issue) is in Supreme Court and I am sure that we will win the legal battle” CM Bommai said while addressing media persons, a day after appealing to his Maharashtra counterpart to settle the border dispute legally. Jallikattu Has No Cruelty On Bulls SC

‘Jallikattu’ Has No Cruelty On Bulls: TN Tells SC

The Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday told the Supreme Court that sporting events can also be cultural events and there is no cruelty on the bulls during Tamil Nadu’s traditional bull-taming sport — ‘Jallikattu’.

The apex court was hearing a batch of petitions challenging laws of the Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra governments, allowing ‘Jallikattu’ and bullock cart races.
“This is an incorrect notion that an activity, which is in nature of a sport or entertainment or amusement, cannot have a cultural value,” said the counsel appearing for the state.

A five-judge Constitution bench of Justices KM Joseph, Ajay Rastogi, Aniruddha Bose, Hrishikesh Roy, and CT Ravikumar was informed by senior advocate Rakesh Dwivedi, appearing for Tamil Nadu, that countries like Peru, Columbia, and Spain consider bullfighting a part of their cultural heritage.

Dwivedi said bulls involved in ‘Jallikattu’ are maintained by farmers round the year.

On the previous hearing, the apex court had told the Tamil Nadu government whether an animal can be used in bull-taming sports like “Jallikattu” for the entertainment of humans and how is the sport necessary for preserving the native breed of bulls.

Supreme Court on November 24 started hearing the pleas challenging Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra governments’ laws.

Tamil Nadu government in its affidavit had stated that Jallikattu is “not merely an act of entertainment or amusement but an event with great historic, cultural and religious value.”

Jallikattu is conducted during the Pongal festival as thanksgiving for a good harvest and subsequent festivals are conducted in temples which shows that the event has great cultural and spiritual significance, it had added.

In February 2018, the Supreme Court referred to the Constitution bench whether the people of Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra can conserve Jallikattu and bullock-cart races as their cultural right and demand their protection under Article 29 (1) of the Constitution.

The top court had earlier said that the petitions challenging the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Tamil Nadu Amendment) Act, 2017, needed to be decided by a larger bench since they involved substantial questions relating to the interpretation of the Constitution.

It had said that a larger bench would decide whether states have the “legislative competence” to make such laws on grounds, including that Jallikattu and bullock cart racing fell under the cultural rights enshrined under Article 29 (1) and can be protected constitutionally.

Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra had amended the central law, the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and allowed Jallikattu and bullock cart racing, respectively.

The petitions were filed in the top court challenging the state laws.

A batch of petitions, led by People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), sought direction to quash the Jallikattu law passed by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, which brought bulls back into the fold of “performing animals”.

PETA had challenged the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Tamil Nadu Amendment) Bill 2017 passed by the state assembly on several grounds, including that it circumvented the apex court verdict holding the bull-taming sport as “illegal” in the state.

The top court had dismissed the Tamil Nadu government’s plea seeking a review of the 2014 judgement banning the use of bulls for Jallikattu events in the state and bullock cart races across the country. (ANI)

Shivaji's Descendent Announces Protest

Shivaji’s Descendent Announces Protest At Raigad Fort Against Governor Koshiyari’s Remark

Bharatiya Janata Party MP and Shivaji Maharaj’s descendent Chhatrapati Udayanraje Bhonsle arrived at the Raigad Fort in Maharashtra on Saturday to express his protest against Governor Bhagat Singh Koshiyari and BJP leader Sudhanshu Trivedi over their alleged remarks on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

At the Raigad Fort, Udayanraje Bhonsle has announced to launch ‘Aakrosh’ agitation to mark his protest.
The Maharashtra Governor on November 19 stoked controversy as he called Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj an ‘old idol’.

Addressing a function at Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University in Aurangabad on November 19, Governor Koshyari said, “If someone asks who your idol is, you don’t have to go out looking for one. You will find them right here in Maharashtra. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj has become an old idol now, you can find new ones — from Babasaheb Ambedkar to (Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways) Nitin Gadkari.”

This statement sparked a massive furore and drew censure from Maratha organisations and opposition leaders alike.

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar slammed Koshyari over his remarks on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and said that Maharashtra Governor has crossed “all limits”.

He further sought intervention from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the matter.

While addressing a press conference, Pawar had said “The Governor has crossed all limits. The President and the Prime Minister should intervene in this matter. It is wrong to give big posts to people who make irresponsible statements.”

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s descendant Udayanraje Bhonsle also wrote to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the governor’s remarks demanding him to be sacked from the post.

“The statements made by the governor and the spokesperson of BJP are very contradictory to the beliefs of the nation it would only be appropriate if you could take measures to remove the Governor of Maharashtra. Your actions and deliberations in resolving this current standoff would go miles in restoring the confidence of the people of Maharashtra and the nation, that you stand in solidarity with the people’s belief and faith in Chh. Shivaji Maharaj. Thanking you,” read the letter. (ANI)

She Could Have Been Saved: Fadnavis on Shraddha’s 2020 Complaint

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday said that an investigation will be initiated into why “no action” was taken by the police on the complaint letter of Shhradha Walkar in 2020.

The Deputy Chief Minister further said that she could have been saved had action been taken on time.
The victim Shhradha Walkar in the year 2020, had made a complaint at the Tulinj Police Station in Maharashtra’s Palghar, in which she stated that Aaftab Poonawala, had beaten her and threatened to kill her.

“I saw the letter (Shraddha’s complaint to Police in 2020) and it has very serious allegations. We will have to investigate why was no action taken. I don’t want to accuse anyone of anything but if action is not taken on such a letter, such incidents happen,” said Fadnavis.

“It will be investigated. Maybe she could have been saved had action been taken,” he added.

However, the Maharashtra Police said that based on a complaint by Shraddha Walkar in 2020, they had begun an investigation but the case was closed after she gave a written statement to withdraw the case.

DCP of Mira Bhayandar-Vasai Virar (MBVV) Commissionerate, Suhas Bavache said that Shraddha in her written statement had stated that “the dispute between herself and Aaftab Poonawala was resolved.”

“Whatever necessary action had to be taken in that matter was done by police at that time. The application that was given by the complainant was also investigated. After the investigation, the complainant herself gave a written statement that there is no dispute. Her friend’s parents also cajoled her to resolve the dispute. She gave the written statement and after that the case was closed,” said Bawche.

In the complaint letter, Shraddha said that she “did not have the guts to go to the police” because Aaftab had threatened to kill her. However, she added that Aaftab tried to kill her on the day she was writing the letter, and he also threatened to cut her into pieces and throw her away.

“It’s been six months he has been hitting me,” the letter read.

The letter further claimed that Aaftab’s parents were aware that he beat her up and that he attempted to kill her.

“I lived with him till date as we were supposed to get married anytime soon and had the blessings of his family. Henceforth, I am not willing to live with him. So any kind of physical damage should be considered coming from him as he has been blackmailing me to kill me or hurt me whenever he sees me anywhere,” Shraddha’s complaint alleged.

Shraddha was strangled to death by her live-in partner Aaftab and her body was chopped into pieces. Aaftab allegedly preserved the chopped body parts in a refrigerator before dumping them in the forests of south Delhi’s Chhatarpur.

Delhi Police had previously said Aaftab, following his arrest in the case, confessed to killing his live-in partner Shraddha in their apartment in West Delhi’s Chhatarpur and to chopping her body into 35 pieces.

Aaftab and Shraddha met on a dating site and moved in together to a rented accommodation in Chhatarpur as the relationship grew.

On receipt of the complaint from Shraddha’s father, Delhi Police registered an FIR on November 10.

Subsequent interrogation of the accused revealed that Aaftab killed Shraddha on May 18 after which he started researching ways to dispose of the body. He also borrowed ideas on disposal from popular crime shows on his streaming devices, Delhi Police revealed.

The accused also told police that he also read up on human anatomy before chopping his girlfriend’s body.

Police said after browsing on the internet on ways to remove all traces of his crime, Aaftab mopped blood stains from the floor of the couple’s Chhatarpur apartment with some chemicals and also disposed of all stained clothes.

He then shifted the body to the bathroom and bought a refrigerator where he hoarded the chopped body parts, police further informed. (ANI)

Speaking to the reporters after the meeting, Thackeray said that Maharashtra was moving forward when there was an MVA government.

Riya Sen joins Rahul Gandhi yatra

Riya Joins Rahul’s Bharat Jodo Yatra

After Pooja Bhatt and Riteish Deshmukh, actor Riya Sen joined the Rahul Gandhi-led Maharashtra leg of the Bharat Jodo Yatra on Thursday.

Party MP Rahul Gandhi and others resumed the Maharashtra leg of the Yatra today from Patur.
Riya was seen walking alongside Rahul Gandhi.

The actor was dressed in a printed orange-red kurta that she paired with denim jeans and sunglasses.

Earlier, apart from Pooja Bhatt and Riteish Deshmukh, television actor Sushant Singh was seen walking with Rahul Gandhi.

Riya Sen has been away from the cinema for quite some time. She has done films Hindi films, including ‘Style’, Sujoy Ghosh’s musical drama ‘Jhankaar Beats’, ‘Dhoom’, Ajay Devgn’s ‘Qayamat: City Under Threat, and others.

The Yatra has already covered parts of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana before entering Maharashtra. Rahul Gandhi will travel through 15 Assembly and 6 Parliamentary Constituencies in Five districts of Maharashtra and would cover a distance of 382 Kms.

Bharat Jodo Yatra, which began on September 7 from Kanyakumari, will cover a further distance of 2,355 km in its 3,570-km march. It will end in Kashmir next year. It is the longest march on foot by any Indian politician in the history of India, the Congress claimed earlier in a statement. Bharat Jodo Yatra is getting support from various political parties and social organizations across the country and the response is increasing day by day.

Notably, all the party MPs, leaders, and workers along with Rahul Gandhi are staying in containers. Sleeping beds, toilets, and ACs are also installed in some of the containers. The arrangements have been made keeping in view the intense heat and humidity with the change of places. The Congress suffered a debacle in the assembly polls held earlier this year and the Yatra is seen as an attempt to rally the party rank and file for the upcoming electoral battles. (ANI)
