BJP Thinks Of Manipur As If It Is Pakistan: Surjewala

Congress MP Randeep Surjewala on Thursday slammed Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the prevailing situation in Manipur and alleged that the ruling party thinks of Manipur as if it is Pakistan”.

“How will they (BJP) even see the black colour of protest when their (BJP) hearts are black?… Dr Manmohan Singh during his tenure as PM used to answer questions every week…Today, they (BJP) think of Manipur which is an integral part of India as if it is Pakistan”, MP Surjewala said.
Earlier today, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi alleged Prime Minister Narendra Modi is aware that BJP’s ideology has set the northeastern state on fire.

According to the Congress leader, PM Modi has got nothing to do with the violence-hit state because he is the Prime Minister of only a few selected people.

In a video message shared by Indian National Congress on Twitter, Rahul Gandhi said, “What is Prime Minister Narendra Modi doing for Manipur? Why is he not saying anything about Manipur? It is because Narendra Modi has nothing to do with Manipur. He knows that his own ideology has burned Manipur.”

Hitting out at PM Modi for not visiting the northeastern state, Rahul Gandhi said, “Have you seen what happened in Manipur? And what is happening? You will be surprised that the Prime Minister has not said a word about Manipur. You would have thought that when a state of the country is burning, the Prime Minister of the country would say something. Many of you would have thought that the Prime Minister of the country would go to Imphal to at least talk to the people.”

Meanwhile today, the opposition MPs of the INDIA alliance arrived at the Parliament wearing black clothes as a mark of protest against the Manipur violence.

While speaking to ANI, Aam Admi Party (AAP) MP Raghav Chaddha said, “Today the MPs of INDIA alliance have decided to oppose the atrocities on the people of Manipur and the barbarism going on there, we will wear black clothes and go to the Parliament today. This will be a symbolic protest to give a message that we stand with the people of Manipur in this hour of grief.

“He further stated that Chief Minister N Biren Singh should be sacked from his position.’We will try to make the Government realise that an integral part of this country, Manipur is burning. We urge the Government to save Manipur and shoulder their Constitutional duty. The State Govt of the day should be dissolved and the CM should be unceremoniously sacked,” he said.

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi said that they are wearing black clothes against the arrogance of PM Modi.

“Our black clothes are against the arrogance of the PM. When the country is burning and Manipur is divided, he is bothered only about his own image,” Gaurav Gogoi said.

Meanwhile, the Leaders of the INDIA alliance held a meeting in the Parliament to chalk out the strategy for the Floor of the House.

Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said, “We do not get a chance to speak in the Parliament. We demanded that PM Modi should come to the Parliament & have a detailed discussion on the Manipur issue. Don’t know why the Prime Minister is not speaking. We were forced to bring a no-confidence motion.”

“We know that this will not bring down the government, but we have no choice. The Prime Minister of the country should come in front of the country and speak on Manipur,” he added.

All Members of Parliament from the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (I.N.D.I.A) on Thursday will wear black clothes to the Parliament to register their protest over the situation in Manipur. (ANI)

LS Passes Multi-State Cooperative Societies Amendment Bill

Lok Sabha on Tuesday passed the Multi-State Cooperative Societies (Amendment) Bill with Home Minister Amit Shah stating that Modi government has taken several steps to revive the Primary Agricultural Cooperative Societies (PACS) to make them viable and multi-dimensional.

The Multi-State Cooperative Societies (Amendment) Bill, 2022, was passed after a brief debate amid sloganeering by opposition MPs over their demands for a detailed discussion on the Manipur situation and a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Amit Shah, who is also Minister of Cooperation, said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Union Cabinet has given approval to the bill aimed at increasing transparency, accountability and profit in multi-state cooperative societies.

The minister, who replied amid continuous sloganeering by opposition MPs, said that a provision has been made for the Election Authority to conduct fair elections and the Authority will be as powerful as the Election Commission and there will be no government interference.

In addition, if one-third vacancies are created in the Board, a provision has been made to hold elections again for the vacant posts. Along with this, there are also provisions for discipline in board meetings and smooth functioning of cooperative societies.

The chairman, vice-chairman and members of the committees will be required to call board meeting in three months. He said that in order to bring transparency in the governance of the cooperative societies, a provision has been made to give majority to the equity shareholders.

Amit Shah said that reservation to one Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe and one woman in the committees has been provided in the bill. He said that non-compliance of various constitutional requirements can lead to disqualification of the board members.

Shah said that in the recruitment process of employees, no one will be given job in blood relations or distant relations. He said that the Right to Information has also been included in this bill. The Minister said that with the passing of this bill, a new era will begin in the country’s cooperative movement.

The Union Minister of Cooperation also informed the Lok Sabha about the various steps taken by the Ministry of Cooperation to strengthen cooperatives in the country. He said that since independence, all the people associated with cooperative sector in the country wanted that cooperatives should be given importance by the Central Government and a separate Ministry of Cooperation should be formed.

He said that fulfilling this decades-old demand, Prime Minister Modi formed a separate Ministry of Cooperation. Noting that cooperative movement in India is about 115 years old, he said this movement has given the country many important enterprises like Amul, Kribhco, IFFCO, which are source of employment for lakhs of people.

He said that no attention was paid to cooperatives in the last 75 years nor was there any brainstorming on this in the country’s parliament at the national or state level. Shah said that in the next 25 years, the cooperative sector will once again strongly contribute to the development of the country.

The Union Minister said there have been many major changes in the cooperative sector of the country in the last two years. He said that Prime Minister Modi has taken the initiative towards the computerization of 63,000 PACS across the country at a cost of Rs 2500 crores.

This will ensure the linkage of the PACS with District Cooperative Banks, State Cooperative Banks, and NABARD. Shah said that after computerization, the process of audit of PACS will be completely online and they will be able to do many different kind of business.

He said that the Modi government prepared model bye-laws for PACS and sent them to all the states and, except Bengal and Kerala, all the states have accepted them and today PACS across the country are running under a similar law.

Shah said that now PACS will be able to do the work of FPO as well and 1100 PACS have already been registered as FPO. The minister said that PM Modi has given gas cylinders to crores of people in the country under initiatives launched by the Centre and now PACS will also be able to do the work of LPG distribution.

PACS will also be able to function as retail outlets, run Janaushadhi Kendras, and do the work of water distribution by functioning as a water committee and will be engaged in the storage, as well. The Modi government, he said, has ended the injustice done to cooperatives for years and brought cooperative and corporate taxes at parity.

He said that farmers of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh sell their sugarcane to cooperative sugar mills but a 30 percent income tax was imposed on it. He said that PM Modi has completely abolished the tax on the profit of the farmers and not only this, he has also made a provision to refund the tax paid earlier.

Shah said the Modi government decided to form three new multi-state societies to strengthen cooperatives. The first society will act as a platform to export the produce of the farmers. The second society will associate small farmers with the production of seeds and through this farmers with one acre of land will also be able to associate with seed production.

The third society will provide suitable prices to the farmers for their produce by marketing their organic products across the country and the world. Shah said that apart from this, the Modi government has also decided to set up a cooperative university for cooperative education in the coming days. The National Cooperative Database will also be started soon.

He said that there was never a national cooperative policy in the country between 2003 and 2020, but before Diwali this year, the new national cooperative policy will be formulated which will put the map of cooperatives in front of the country for the next 25 years.

Amit Shah said that the Modi government has striven to free crores of people in the country from poverty in the last 9 years. Detailed provisions for reforming the election process of members, bringing transparency in the society, strengthening the monitoring system, and ease of doing business have been made in the Bill.

A release said that provisions have also been made in the bill, regarding discipline and professionalism among the members of the society, and representation of weaker and marginalized sections in the board of directors.

The Bill also provides for redemption of government shares with the prior approval of the government, liquidation after providing an opportunity of being heard to the multi-state co-operative society, and enforcement of the Banking Regulation(BR) Act, 1949 on co-operative banks. (ANI)

Rajya Sabha immediate discussion on manipur case

RS: Oppo Demands Immediate Discussion On Manipur Under Rule 267

Rajya Sabha faced its second adjournment on Tuesday amid insistence by the opposition for a detailed discussion on Manipur violence and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement on it.

Soon after the House reassembled at 12 noon following the first adjournment earlier, the Opposition leaders raised their demand. Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar proceeded with Question Hour even as opposition members raised slogans in support of their demand.
The Chairman told the protesting members to maintain order as Question Hour is at the Heart of Parliament’s functioning,

“We will have to have zero tolerance for lack of decorum,” he said.

Dhankhar objected to remarks of Congress leader P Chidambaram’s “how can you do it” remarks earlier and said the language was “extreme and intemperate”.

Chidambaram said that he had pointed to the earlier remarks made by the Chair and meant no disrespect.

Congress leaders Randeep Singh Surjewala and P. Chidambaram appealed to the chair to hold a discussion on the Manipur issue under Rule 267 and said over 50 notices had been given.

Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge asked why the government is not ready for discussion on the Manipur issue when 50 members have given notice under Rule 267 today and similar notices have been given for the last four days.

He also referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi taking a jibe at the opposition over INDIA alliance by talking about East India Company but not speaking in Parliament on Manipur violence.

“So many representatives are giving notices under 267 in Parliament. We are talking about Manipur, but the Prime Minister is talking about East India Company,” Kharge alleged.

Several other leaders, including AAP’s Raghav Chadha, BRS’ K Keshava Rao, also spoke and demanded discussion under Rule 267 on Manipur.

Leader of the House Piyush Goyal said the government is ready to discuss all issues and accused the opposition of trying to polticise atrocities against women.

He also referred to the incidences of violence in Congress-ruled Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh and said these incidents should also be discussed.

“If they were sensitive, a discussion would have started,” he said.

Amid the din, Rajya Sabha Chairman adjourned the House till 2 pm. The House has been witnessing adjournments since the beginning of the monsoon session of Parliament on July 20. Opposition is keen on discussion under a rule that also entails voting. (ANI)

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday responded to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s jibe at the newly-formed INDIA alliance of opposition parties and said he can call them by any name but they will “help heal Manipur” and “rebuild the idea of India” in the state which has seen ethnic violence.

Rahul Gandhi said in a tweet that parties of INDIA will bring back “love and peace” to the people of Manipur.
“Call us whatever you want, Mr. Modi. We are INDIA. We will help heal Manipur and wipe the tears of every woman and child. We will bring back love and peace for all her people. We will rebuild the idea of India in Manipur,” Gandhi said.

The Congress leaders’ remarks came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a jibe at the emerging alliance of opposition parties in his remarks at the meeting of BJP Parliamentary Party on Tuesday.

Twenty-six opposition parties including Congress, which met in Bengaluru earlier this month, decided to name their alliance – INDIA (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance).

BJP leader Ravi Shankar told the media after the BJP Parliamentary Party meeting that PM Modi had said in his remarks that “something on face value could be different from something that is really true”.

“PM Modi has said that Indian National Congress, East India Company was founded by a foreign national. Today people are using names like Indian Mujahideen and Indian People’s Front. Something on face value could be different from something that is really true,” Prasad said.

“We are proud of our PM. We are coming back to power in 2024,” he added.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also reacted in the Rajya Sabha to PM Modi’s remarks.

“So many representatives are giving notices under 267 in Parliament. We are talking about Manipur. Manipur is burning but the Prime Minister is talking about East India Company,” Kharge said.

Sources said parties of INDIA are planning to move no-confidence motion against the BJP-led government in the Lok Sabha.

They said that the floor leaders of Congress and other like-minded parties discussed the proposal to bring a no-confidence motion in their meeting held on Tuesday morning. (ANI)

East India Company, Indian Mujahideen: Modi’s Jibe At INDIA Alliance

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday launched a stinging attack on the “completely directionless” INDIA alliance of opposition parties and compared the grouping with terrorist outfits like Indian Mujahideen and Popular Front of India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a dig that as the Britishers named themselves the East India Company and terror organisations like the Indian Mujahideen and the Indian People’s Front, all of whom have ‘India’ in them, similarly the Opposition was presenting itself with the name of India.
Addressing media persons here, senior BJP leader and former Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad quoted the PM’s remarks in the party’s Parliamentary meeting held earlier today.

“We are proud of our PM. We will return to power in 2024. PM Modi in his remarks said that Indian National Congress, East India Company was founded by a foreign national,” Prasad said.

“Today people are using names like Indian Mujahideen and Indian People’s Front. Something on face value could be different from something that is really true,” the former union minister said citing the Prime Minister’s remarks at the BJP Parliamentary party meeting.

Congress National President and Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge said that while the Opposition was urging the Prime Minister to speak on the Manipur issue in Parliament, he was instead talking about the East India Company in his party meeting.

“Why is he scared about opposition parties naming themselves as INDIA. They are nervous because of our successful meetings in Patna and Bengaluru,” Kharge said responding to PM’s jibe on the acronym INDIA, which stands for Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance.

“The opposition is giving direction to the country. The Prime Minister himself has become directionless,” Kharge said.

“The Manipur issue is not like the ones in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh or West Bengal, it is way more serious. This is a concern for all the Northeast states in the country. They are not concerned about the atrocities against women, Kharge further stated.

Inside the Rajya Sabha, the Leader of the Opposition Kharge said that the prime minister was busy talking about the East India Company at a time when Manipur was burning.

“So many representatives are giving notices under 267 in Parliament. We are talking about Manipur. Manipur is burning but the Prime Minister is talking about East India Company,” Kharge said.

Ravi Shankar Prasad said that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) was poised to return to power in 2024.

“We are well on course to return to power in 2024. The country has set high hopes on us and the Opposition alliance knows it is not coming to power. This sad and tired Opposition will disintegrate,” he said.

Prime Minister Modi today came down heavily on the face-off in Parliament over the Manipur issue between the Opposition and the government that has led to continued disruptions since the beginning of the ongoing Monsoon Session.

Parliamentary Affairs minister Prahlad Joshi said that in the BJP Parliamentary meeting, PM Modi said that from the Opposition’s conduct, it seems that they have decided to remain in the Opposition for the coming years.”

Earlier today the BJP’s Parliamentary Party meeting was held to chalk out a strategy to counter the Opposition’s ruckus in the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament.

The Monsoon Session, which began on July 20, with a long list of legislative businesses on the agenda, has seen repeated adjournments in the face of Opposition protests, sloganeering, and ruckus by members of the fledgling grand Opposition alliance over its demand for a statement from PM Modi on the Manipur situation. Modi Tears Into Opposition As Parliament Logjam Continues

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday came down heavily on the Opposition over the continued disruptions and ruckus in Parliament over the Manipur issue, claiming that their conduct suggests that they have decided to remain in the Opposition.

Addressing the BJP’s Parliamentary Party meeting earlier on Tuesday, PM Modi said, “From the Opposition’s conduct, it seems that they have decided to remain in the Opposition. We have to work in the interest of the public and move forward.”
He added that India’s image has been elevated before the world and the BJP will keep putting in the hard yards in this direction.

“Today, India’s image before the world has improved significantly and we are committed to keep working in this direction,” PM Modi added at the BJP meeting.

He further said that the government, under his leadership, will work to make India a ‘developed nation’ by the end of the ‘Amrit Kaal’ — 2047.

“By 2047, we will make India a developed country,” he said.

Also lashing out at the Opposition, senior BJP leader and former Union minister, Ravi Shankar Prasad said the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) was poised to return to power in 2024.

Speaking to ANI on Tuesday, Prasad said, “We are well on course to return to power in 2024. The country has set high hopes on us and the Opposition alliance knows it is not coming to power. This sad and tired Opposition will disintegrate further.”

The former Union minister informed further that PM Modi, during his address at the BJP meet, also took a dig at the Opposition over the name I.N.D.I.A.

“PM Modi said like the East India Company, the Indian National Congress was also founded by a foreigner. He said even the Indian Mujahideen and People’s Front of India (PFI) have the word India in them,” Prasad, the former Law Minister, said.

Meanwhile, on the suspension of AAP MP Sanjay Singh from the Rajya Sabha, BJP Lok Sabha member Manoj Tiwari compared his conduct in the Upper House with that of a street ruffian.

“This is how the ruffians from the streets behave when they get a chance to enter the Upper House,” Tiwari said.

The BJP’s Parliamentary Party meeting began earlier, on Tuesday, to chalk out a strategy to counter the Opposition’s ruckus in the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament.

The meeting also featured discussions on crucial organisational matters with party MPs.

Both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned on Monday amidst uproarious scenes with the Opposition demanding a statement from the Prime Minister on the violence in Manipur.

The first two days of the monsoon session last week saw a similar ruckus leading to almost no business in both Houses.

Significantly the members of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (I.N.D.I.A), also held a meeting on Tuesday at the office of Congress national president and the Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge to chalk out a floor management strategy before the Upper House goes into session.

RS Adjourned Till 12 Noon Amid Oppo Uproar Over Manipur Issue

Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 12 noon on Tuesday with the Opposition parties continuing to press for their demand for a discussion on ethnic violence in Manipur by suspending other business of the day and a statement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Soon after the House assembled for the day Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Raghav Chadha raised a point of order and sought division over the suspension of party leader Sanjay Singh from the Rajya Sabha for the remainder of the monsoon session on Monday.
Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar declined the request and took up the listed agenda amid opposition protests.

He said that he had received 51 notices from Opposition members under Rule 267 for a discussion on Manipur situation.

He said some notices were also received for discussion under Rule 167.

Leader of the House Piyush Goyal said there the government is ready to discuss on each issue, and appealed that there should also be short duration discussion on crime against women in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh.

Congress leader P Chidambaram said that Rule 267 must take precedence over Rule 267 and the House should commence the discussion on the Manipur situation.

As the Opposition leaders continued sloganeering from their seats, Rajya Sabha Chairman adjourned the House till 12 noon

The Rajya Sabha faced a washout for the third consecutive day on Monday and failed to transact significant business due to adjournments forced by the opposition over their demands.

The Monsoon session of Parliament began on July 20 and will continue till August 11. (ANI)

Save Our Daughters: BJP MP Chatterjee Breaks Down

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from West Bengal’s Hooghly Locket Chatterjee broke down on Friday while recounting an alleged incident of sexual assault of a BJP candidate during Bengal panchayat polls. The BJP has claimed that Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers were behind this incident.

MP Chatterjee was addressing a press briefing along with West Bengal BJP chief Sukanta Majumdar in connection with a viral video of Manipur, purportedly showing two women being paraded in the nude.
“We are also women. We also want our daughters to be saved… We are also India’s daughters. West Bengal is also part of this country. Yesterday Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke on incidents of assault against women in Manipur. He not only spoke for the daughters in Manipur but for daughters across the country,” Chatterjee said.

“He said that the law and order in all states should be made strict to protect our daughters. Not just daughters of Manipur but daughters all over the country. So I urge you all to speak up for us also. Where will our daughters go for justice? There were incidents of violence against our daughters during the recent panchayat polls”, MP Chatterjee said during the press briefing.

Speaking to mediapersons before the Parliament went into session on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said his heart was filled with sorrow and anger over the incident in Manipur. “What has happened to the daughters of Manipur can never be forgiven,” PM Modi had said.

Meanwhile, addressing a press brChatterjee broke down in tears as she recounted an alleged incident of sexual assault by TMC workers of a BJP candidate during Panchayat polls on July 8 in Howrah district of West Bengal.

West Bengal DGP Manoj Malviya, however, said that the police investigated the incident but no evidence was found of the alleged incident.

“Howrah Panchla incident is in news… An email was received on July 13. As per the email, it was alleged that on July 8, the victim was forcibly pulled out of the polling booth, her clothes were torn… That was only through the mail. Police then asked them to FIR. We investigated and found this alleged incident has no evidence or proof found,” DGP Manoj Malviya said.

The DGP further said that the police, central forces and even the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly had visited the place on July 8, where the polling was taking place, but no one said anything about the alleged incident.

“On July 8, there were police and central forces in the booth and also there were many people who came to vote, but no one said such an incident happened. Even the LOP had visited that place and the fact-finding team visited once, but no one said about this incident. Though we reached out to the complainant and her husband and called her for a medical examination they have not given anything. If this kind of incident had happened the police would have taken action. This is a digital era and everyone records if anything happens”, the DGP added. (ANI)

LS, RS Adjourned, Oppo Insists On PM Statement Over Manipur Violence

The two Houses of Parliament were adjourned for the day on Thurdsay following adjournments and opposition protests over their demand for discussion on Manipur violence by suspending other business of the day and a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Lok Sabha was adjourned till 12 noon and later for the day. Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 2.30 pm before being adjourned for the day.
Soon after the Lok Sabha met for the day, opposition MPs were on their feet demanding discussion on the situation in Manipur. They also raised slogans.

Defence minister Rajnath Singh said the Centre was willing to discuss situation in Manipur. He also referred to the horrific incident in which two women were paraded naked and sexual violence committed against them.

“Manipur incident is a very serious matter and sensing the gravity of the situation, the PM has said that what happened in the state (viral video) has put the entire nation to shame. A few political parties are tying to create a needless ruckus in Parliament to ensure that a discussion over Manipur can’t take place,” he said.

“PM has said strictest action will be taken over the incident. We do want a discussion in Parliament over Manipur. I had said this in the all-party meeting and I would like to reiterate on the floor of this august House that we want a discussion on Manipur,” Singh said.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, who had earlier taken up the Question Hour, urged members to take their seats.

“Will a solution to problems be found through sloganeering. The solution can be found through talks and discussion. This way is not correct,” he said.

As the din continued, the Speaker adjourned the House till 12 noon.

When the House reassembled, the opposition parties continued their protest.

Rajendra Agrawal,who was in the Chair, took up the listed business of the day amid sloganeering by opposition members.

The opposition members were also carrying placards. They sought of place the placards where the House camera was panning and the face of BJP member Satya Pal Singh, who was moving a motion, was covered for a short while.

Agrawal urged members to take their seats and said the government has indicated its willingness for discussion.

As the sloganeering and protests continued, the House was adjourned for the day.

Opposition parties also pressed their demand in the Rajya Sabha for detailed discussion on Manipur situation and a statement from the Prime Minister in the House.

After the House assembled for the day and papers were laid on the table, opposition members sought to raise the issue and urged the chair to consider their notices on the suspension of business for a detailed discussion on Manipur violence.

Congress MP Pramod Tiwari, Aam Aadmi Party MP Raghav Chaddha, Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’Brien were among MPs who sought to raise the matter leading to a din.

Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar tried to convince the MPs that the government is ready to hold a debate on the matter and there is no confusion about it. A member also asked if a matter pending in the court could be discussed in the House.

As oppositon members continued raising their demand, the Chairman adjourned the House till 2.30 pm.

When the House reassmled, opposition members again raised their deman .

Dhankhar adjourned the House amid the din.

UPI-Based Payments To Be Accepted In SL

India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) technology will now be accepted in neighbouring Sri Lanka.

Several agreements, including that of UPI’s acceptance in the island country, were exchanged between India and Sri Lanka in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe in the national capital on Friday.
UPI payments system has become hugely popular for retail digital payments in India, and its adoption is increasing at a rapid pace.

So far, France, UAE, and Singapore had parterned with India on the emerging fintech and payment solutions.

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is India’s mobile-based fast payment system, which facilitates customers to make round-the-clock payments instantly, using a Virtual Payment Address (VPA) created by the customer.

In February 2023, India and Singapore signed an agreement to link their respective payment systems, allowing users in either country to make cross-border transactions. People in both the countries will be able to send money real-time via QR-code based or simply by entering mobile numbers linked to the bank account.

Earlier this month, France had agreed to use Unified Payments Interface (UPI) payment mechanism. It will begin from the iconic and tourist hotspot Eiffel Tower.

Also, a MoU was exchanged to interlink the payment and messaging systems between the Reserve Bank of India and the Central Bank of the UAE. It will facilitate the integration Unified Payments Interface (UPI) of India and the Instant Payments Platform (IPP) of the UAE.

India has emerged as one of the fastest-growing ecosystems for fintech innovation and the PM Modi-led government has been instrumental in driving the globalisation of India’s digital payment infrastructure.

A key emphasis of Indian government has been on ensuring that the benefits of UPI are not limited to India only, but other countries, too, benefit from it.

Taking into account the popularity of the UPI payment system, the Reserve Bank of India proposed to permit all inbound travellers to India to use UPI for their merchant payments while they are in the country.

To begin with, the facility will be extended to travellers from G20 countries arriving at “select international airports”. On February 8, the RBI governor Skaktikanta Das made the announcement while deliberating upon the outcome of the three-day monetary policy committee meeting. (ANI)
