Car Bomb Explosions Somalia

2 Car Bomb Explosions Near Somalia’s Education Ministry, 100 Dead

As many as 100 people were killed and more than 300 others were wounded in Somalia on Saturday after two car bombs exploded near the education ministry in the capital Mogadishu.

The two car bombs exploded near a busy intersection in the capital and near the Ministry of Education, according to an official with the president’s office, reported CNN.
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in a video statement posted on his official Twitter account claimed that the Al-Shabaab terror group in Somalia was responsible for the deadly attack.

“Today’s cruel and cowardly terrorist attack on innocent people by the morally bankrupt and criminal al-Shabaab group cannot discourage us but will further strengthen our resolve to defeat them once and for all,” Mohamud wrote on Twitter.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, but the Islamist group Al-Shabaab has claimed other recent attacks, reported CNN.

“Our government and brave people will continue to defend Somalia against evil,” Mohamud added.

The intersection, Zobe junction, was the same location as a deadly bombing attack on October 14, 2017, which killed more than 500 people and injured around 300 others.

“By the will of God, no other October like this will happen. They won’t get the chance to commit such a thing,” Mohamud said, calling Saturday’s attack a repeat of the 2017 bombings.

The recent siege of an upscale hotel in the capital Mogadishu killing at least 20 people is a grave reminder of the security challenges the country is facing.

Al-Shabaab emerged as the radical youth wing of Somalia’s now-defunct Union of Islamic Courts, which controlled Mogadishu in 2006, before being forced out by Ethiopian forces.

Al-Shabaab advocates the Saudi-inspired Wahhabi version of Islam, while most Somalis are Sufis.

It has imposed a strict version of Sharia in areas under its control, including stoning to death women accused of adultery and amputating the hands of thieves.

It is banned as a terrorist group by both the US and the UK.

There have been numerous reports that Al-Shabab may have formed some links with other militant groups, such as Boko Haram in Nigeria and Al-Qaeda.

Somalia has long been called a failed or fragile state that has seen one of the biggest failures of international counter-terror operations.

Somalia has not had an effective national government for more than 20 years, during which much of the country has been a war zone.

Al-Shabaab gained support by promising people security, but its credibility was knocked when it rejected Western food aid to combat a 2011 drought and famine.

In 2022, there was a peaceful transition of power in Somalia after the successful completion of the legislative and presidential elections.

In recent years, despite international counter-terror measures, Al-Shabab has grown in strength, cashing in on the humanitarian crisis in Somalia and the security crises in neighboring countries. (ANI)

C-295 Aircraft Manufacturing Unit In Vadodara

Modi Lays Foundation Of C-295 Aircraft Manufacturing Unit In Vadodara

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a visit to Gujarat, laid the foundation stone of the C-295 transport aircraft manufacturing facility in Vadodara today.

PM Modi was felicitated and presented with a memento by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Tata Sons chairperson N Chandrasekaran at the occasion.

The C-295 transport aircraft for the Indian Air Force will be manufactured by Tata-Airbus, said Defence Ministry officials.

Apart from making 40 aircraft, this facility at Vadodara would be manufacturing additional aircraft for Air Force requirements and exports, as per Defence Secretary Aramane Giridhar.

Speaking on the occasion, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said, “Today, for the first time in the country, the foundation stone of an aircraft manufacturing facility is being laid by the private sector. It is certainly a matter of pride for the defense sector as well as for the entire country.”

“It is not just a foundation stone but a milestone in the defense sector’s ‘Atmanirbharta’ journey. C-295 aircraft manufactured at this facility will be state-of-the-art aircraft with superior capabilities and global standards. It will significantly enhance the logistic capability of the Indian Air Force,” Singh added.

With the launch of the C295 aircraft manufacturing facility, India will enter an illustrious league of about only a dozen nations with the capacity to manufacture military transport aircraft. -Currently, the US, Japan, UK, Russia, France, Italy, Spain, Ukraine, Brazil, China, and Japan has that capacity.

Tata-Airbus combine had said that C-295 manufacturing is “the first Make in India aerospace program in the private sector involving the full development of a complete industrial ecosystem; from manufacture to assembly, test and qualification, to delivery and maintenance of the complete lifecycle of the aircraft.”

Under the terms of the deal, 16 C-295 aircraft are scheduled to be delivered between September 2023 and August 2025 in flyaway condition, while the remaining 40 aircraft will be manufactured at the Vadodara facility.

In another first, “indigenous content in the planes will be the highest ever in India, and 96 percent of the work that Airbus does in Spain will now be done at the new facility.”

The Defence Ministry said this project “offers a unique opportunity for the Indian private sector to enter the technology-intensive and highly competitive aviation industry. It will augment domestic aviation manufacturing resulting in reduced import dependence and expected increase in exports.”

Further, 13,400 parts, 4600 sub-assemblies, and all significant component assemblies will be manufactured by 25 domestic MSME suppliers spread across seven states. All these 56 aircraft will be fitted with an indigenous electronic warfare suite developed by Bharat Electronics Ltd and Bharat Dynamics Limited.

As per the Allied Market Research report, the military transport aircraft industry is set to reach USD 45 billion industry size by 2030. Tata-Airbus facility is due to complete its IAF commitment by 203 products and start exporting its products to other nations as well.

Given the fact that the military transport aircraft industry is a much more robust and technologically advanced machine than commercial airliners, C295 manufacturing will open up prospects for the development of domestic commercial aircraft manufacturing will pick up. Indian airline companies are one of the biggest buyers of commercial aircraft with an ever-expanding order book of 1,100 aircraft since 2011.

Demand for commercial aircraft coupled with the C295 aircraft manufacturing facility and associated supply chain will create the required ecosystem to support the development of the commercial aircraft manufacturing industry in India.

The Vadodara facility will be initially geared to manufacture 8 aircraft per year, but it has been designed such that it can also cater to the additional needs of Indian armed forces or exports.

As per Defence Ministry, following the delivery of 56 aircraft to IAS, the combine will be allowed to sell India-built C295 aircraft to civil operators and to countries cleared by the government. It is believed that the Vadodara facility will replicate the success of Brahmos in missile exports.

Big boost to the Make in India: India has embarked on a massive transformation of its defense sector through the ambitious Make in India program of the Modi government. Several projects for the domestic manufacturing of various defense platforms like missiles, field guns, tanks, aircraft carriers, drones, fighter planes, tanks, and helicopters are currently underway and are fulfilling the defense modernization needs of the Indian armed forces.

However, military transport aircraft was one of the critical missing links in the entire defense industrial complex chain. The JV between Tata and Airbus has plugged that missing piece and will significantly boost the Make in India program of the Narendra Modi government. The Indian Armed forces will no longer have to depend on the old Avro planes of the 1960 generation for their transportation needs. (ANI)

Gopal Rai Delhi Air Pollution

Heavy Flow From UP Caused Foam On Yamuna: Gopal Rai

Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai has claimed that the speedy flow of river Yamuna from Uttar Pradesh is the cause behind foam formation atop the river in the national capital.

“High-speed river flow from UP is the main cause for the foam formation over the river in Delhi especially in the Kalindi Kunj area,” Delhi environment minister Gopal Rai said quoting the scientists of Delhi Jal Board.
Addressing a press conference in the national capital, the environment minister cited “multiple reasons” as a cause for the increase in the pollution levels during the winter season in Delhi and its nearby areas.

Rai further said in the meeting to discuss pollution levels in Delhi NCR, that the AQI level is likely to reach over 400 from November 1.

He assured that a ‘monitoring committee’ will be formed to keep a watch over construction works that are still in progress despite the imposition of a ban in the wake of the deteriorating air quality of the National Capital Region.

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) in NCR and adjoining areas imposed this ban on Saturday stating that all construction works other than the one of Central Vista need to be stopped amid the rising pollution levels.

The Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) sub-committee decided to implement Stage III of GRAP in the entire NCR in a move to prevent further deterioration of air quality.

He highlighted that the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Anand Vihar and Vivek Vihar has been reported highest at the levels of 440 and 408 respectively, Rai added.

Accusing the BJP-led central government for the stubble burning in Punjab — which is another cause of pollution in neighbouring cities including Delhi, the environment minister said, “Punjab government is ready to give financial support to the farmers after banning stubble burning but it is the Centre which is not ready to contribute to it monetarily.”

The decision of the Delhi government to ban firecrackers was also criticised by the BJP and they are also not letting the onset of campaign ‘Red light on, Gaadi off’ here.

“BJP is also restricting the Red Light On, Gaadi Off campaign, despite the fact that it helped bring pollution down to 15 per cent levels in the national capital in the previous year,” he said.

Rai on Thursday had claimed in a press conference that the campaign was to be rolled out on October 28, however, it was being postponed as the approval was due from the L-G’s office. He added that the file was sent on October 21 for approval.

Denying the charges, L-G office sources said that the file that was sent to the L-G office mentioned October 31 as the date of rollout instead of October 28 as claimed by the Delhi minister.

Further mentioning about the cleanliness of Yamuna, Rai emphasised on the five years’ time sought by Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal stating that such a “huge problem cannot be resolved in two days.”

To address the deteriorating air quality of the National Capital Region, the Sub-Committee for invoking actions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) of the CAQM in NCR and adjoining areas held an emergency meeting on Saturday.

This meeting was conducted after the third phase of GRAP in Delhi NCR.

While comprehensively reviewing the overall air quality parameters during the meeting, the Commission noted that due to unfavourable meteorological conditions with slower wind speed and sudden spike in farm fire incidents, it is considered necessary to implement Stage III of GRAP with immediate effect in the entire NCR.

“As per the dynamic model and weather/ meteorological forecast, the overall air quality over Delhi is likely to remain in the Very Poor to Severe category from 29.10.2022 to 30.10.2022. The air quality is likely to deteriorate and remain in a Severe category from 31.10.2022 to 01.11.2022 and for the subsequent 6 Days, the air quality is likely to fluctuate between the Severe to Very Poor category,” read the official statement from CAQM.

The CAQM further noted that the winds are forecasted to be calm in the coming days and the wind direction is likely to change course frequently. Thus, there is a high likelihood of the pollutants getting trapped in the region and not getting dispersed effectively.

The CAQM had further appealed to the citizens of NCR to cooperate in implementing GRAP and follow the steps mentioned in the Citizen Charter under GARP. Apart from that, a 9-point action plan as per Stage III of GRAP was made applicable in the entire NCR.

The 9-point action plan includes steps to be implemented/ ensured by different agencies and Pollution Control Boards of NCR and DPCC, as per the official statement. (ANI)

Anushka All Heart Kohli

T20 WC: Kohli 28 Runs Away From This Career-Defining Milestone

Former India captain and star batter Virat Kohli are just inches away from adding another record to his tally.

Kohli will need just 28 runs to overtake ICC Hall of Famer Mahela Jayawardena as the most prolific run-scorer across T20 World Cups when he takes on South Africa in Perth on Sunday.
With 989 runs already scored throughout all T20 World Cups, Kohli needs 28 more runs to surpass all previous record-holders. Mahela Jayawardena, a former captain of Sri Lanka, currently owns the record with 1016 runs.

Despite a lagging start to the year, the 33-year-old found his rhythm in the Asia Cup and in the bilateral series matches against Australia and South Africa that preceded the competition. He also got off to a fast start in the eagerly anticipated match against Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in front of over 90,000 spectators in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2022.

Australian legend and former Indian head coach Greg Chappell on Saturday said that Virat Kohli’s innings of 82* against Pakistan in their ICC T20 World Cup 2022 match at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) legitimized the shorter format as an art form and added that late spin great Shane Warne would have been proud of star batter’s knock had he been alive.

Chappell called Virat Kohli the “most complete Indian batsman” of his time and further went on to term Virat’s recent ICC T20 World Cup matching winning knock against Pakistan a “song by God.”

If slamming his much-anticipated 71st international ton after over a thousand days during Asia Cup 2022 was not enough, Virat silenced all the criticism and talks of his place in India’s T20I set-up with this knock, that helped Men in Blue snatch an improbable four-wicket win from the jaws of defeat.

It was a knock that left Chappell mighty impressed. Writing in his Sydney Morning Herald column, “None of the greats of bygone eras could have dismembered an opponent so brutally without compromising the niceties of the art of batting than Kohli did on the last Sunday night.”

“Kohli is a complete Indian batsman of my time. Only the greatest of champions have the courage and the intelligence to transport their imagination beyond the mortal plane. Kohli has that. Perhaps only Tiger Pataudi has come close to transcending a similar stratosphere.” (ANI)

News Wrap

Five things that happened last week (And what to make of them)

The formidable rise and rise of China’s Xi

The West is often flummoxed by the goings on in China. This has been particularly true since 2013 when Xi Jinping became president (or rather, the supreme leader) of China. Last week, after China’s Communist party congress, which is held twice every 10 years, Xi emerged even stronger than he has been in his tenure. First, deviating from the norm, he got for himself a third term as head of China’s Communist party as well as president of the country. In addition, he reconstituted the seven-member all-powerful top decision-making body of the party, the Politburo Standing Committee, appointing his closest allies for six members besides himself.

Besides recognising that Xi, 69, is now formidably powerful as China’s leader, the western media and some of the west’s political observers seem not to have comprehended the full impact of Xi’s latest move–to empower himself to a degree that rivals the status of the late Mao Zedong, who was the founder of the People’s Republic of China, which he led as the chairman of the Chinese Communist Party from the establishment of the of the republic in 1949 until his death in 1976. Last week, on a major US TV news channel that shall remain unnamed, a correspondent from Beijing and the anchor of the show were together wondering why Xi had appointed his hardcore loyalists to his core team and had not sought to include some members with more diverse views. Seriously?

The problem is that many observers do not understand the mind of Xi Jinping. Unlike his predecessors–and, most importantly, unlike the late Deng Xiaoping, widely regarded as the leader who took China towards free-market economics through a series of far-reaching market-economy reforms and away from strictly ideology-driven policies–Xi is a hardliner when it comes to ideology. Under him, ideology dictates policy and not the other way round. This has several consequences for the rest of the world–the west, as well as China’s Asian neighbours such as India.

Here’s a peek at what Xi’s all-powerful clout means on several fronts. First, in Xi’s regime, there is a new form of nationalism that China has embraced–one in which China plays a dominant role in shaping the world order. It is a nationalism that derives from Marxism and in which the face-off is between the Communist party and its ideology versus free-market tycoons and western ideas of economics and politics. These could sound alien to western ears but as Xi pursues that approach, the impact on the rest of the world could be huge.

Second, already under Xi’s regime the role of the Communist party and the state in economics and business has been growing–either through regulation or policies. The crackdown on China’s tech tycoons and other private sector enterprises is an example of how China believes enterprises should strive towards higher socio-economic objectives than just financial returns. It is believed that involvement of the party and the state could get ramped up in the coming years. Already there are reports that many wealthy Chinese are attempting to leave the country as they anticipate possible crackdowns.

It is not that economic reforms are stopping in China. Instead, as reforms continue, unlike in the past when they were market driven, under Xi, the state and the party has been increasing its role in economic policy. The objective of that regulation is believed to be to make China become more self-sufficient while the world becomes more dependent on China.

The common thread in the ‘super-empowered’ Xi regime is “dominance”. China would likely try to be more dominant–in global economics, global politics, and the world’s social and environmental issues. China has been expanding its military and commercial access in the Indian Ocean region–by building ports, airports, and other infrastructure projects in countries such as Pakistan and Sri Lanka. You could expect more of that. Likewise, China has been pushing its Belt and Road Initiative, a global infrastructure development strategy, which calls for China to assume a greater leadership role in global matters by investing in the infrastructure of 150 countries in Asia, Africa and Eurasia.

The bottomline is that China’s ambitions to play a dominant role in the world, driven hugely by ideology (where the objective is for China to play the main role in the emerging world order), will be accelerated in the new extra powerful status that Xi has carved for himself.

Congress’ new prez makes predictable moves

(Caveat: You could skip this item in the column and not miss anything; or, read it for pure distraction)

The Congress party in India has for some time now been resembling more of an amusing, black humour laced distraction than anything of consequence for serious politics. When it makes news these days it is usually for avoidable reasons. Earlier this month, it held an election for the post of the president of the party for which there were two contenders, with one of them alleging that, at least in some parts of the country, the polling was rigged. This was an internal election of the party, mind you. Also, in an instance that smacked of farce, one of the party’s leaders and descendant of the dynastic family that has ruled the party for the longest time, Rahul Gandhi, alluded to Mallikarjun Kharge as the new president even before the results of the election were declared.

Now, Kharge, an octogenarian and a life-long loyalist of the family, has made his first move by replacing the party’s working committee with a 47-member steering committee. And guess what? It has on it all the members of the Gandhi family: former president Somia Gandhi, her son Rahul, and her daughter Priyanka. The steering committee also includes former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and several other seasoned veterans (all of them staunch loyalists of the Gandhis).

What next? Not much except to wait and watch for Kharge’s attempts to revamp and resuscitate a dying party. If you’re an incorrigible optimist, you could think he’ll do it with an independent unforced hand. But we’ll see. As mentioned in the caveat, you could have skipped this section!

Musk kicks off with firings at Twitter

After he took over Twitter, the ubiquitous social media platform that has some 330 million active monthly users, Elon Musk who paid an eye-popping $44 billion for it has kicked off his inning with firings.

He began by sacking Chief Executive Parag Agrawal, Chief Financial Officer Ned Segal and legal affairs and policy chief Vijaya Gadde, all of whom he had accused of misleading him and other investors about the number of fake accounts on the platform.

Earlier, Musk, 51, after concluding his deal, had walked into Twitter’s headquarters with a bathroom sink and declared (via a tweet): “Let that sink in.” He had also changed his Twitter profile to ‘Chief Twit’.

Social media trackers are keenly watching Musk’s moves at the popular but divisive platform. Earlier, in an interview Musk had said he has plans to eliminate nearly 75% of the workforce at Twitter. He has also promised to preserve free speech but was also inclined to side with world leaders who are concerned about BIg Tech’s dominance and ability to facilitate activists. This has worried many who feel his commitment to preserving free speech might eventually be compromised.

Are Meta’s financials in free-fall?

One year after Facebook was rechristened as Meta, the company’s finances and valuations have tumbled. Last Thursday, Meta’s shares crashed 24% to $97.94, the lowest in four years. In one year the company’s market value has been reduced by an eye-popping $650 billion. Meta market capitalisation now stands at $263 billion. It is out of the ranks of the top 20 companies (by market cap) and its value is now lower than that of Home Depot.

Meta’s spiralling decline in valuation has also pushed down Facebook founder and CEO’s personal net worth: he lost $11 billion after the stock plummeted and is now down to being the 29th richest person in the world (he was the 25th before last week’s crash of Meta’s stock).

The more important aspect of Meta’s decline is that both its main property–Facebook–has been losing users consistently for the past few years. Although Facebook has 2.93 billion users, it is not a huge draw among younger netizens who prefer newer platforms such as TikTok. And Meta’s other property, the messaging platform WhatsApp, has been losing sheen because of privacy concerns with many users opting for other services such as Telegram and Signal, which are considered by many to have more privacy protection.

Life on the high streets of social media can be ephemeral.

Meet Arvind, the latest proponent of mystical mumbo jumbo

Just when we thought the engineer-turned-successful politician and Delhi’s intrepid chief minister, Arvind Kejriwal, had honed his political acumen to a degree where he could plant his clout at the national level, he gave us reason to not take him too seriously. Last week, Kejriwal urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to have Indian rupee currency notes emblazoned with images of religious deities such as Lakshmi and Ganesha. If newspaper reports are to be believed, Kejriwal said he believed the Hindu religious symbols of prosperity will help the economy get back on track.

There could be two ways, though, to look at his motives. First, could it be that Kejriwal who has been a staunch critic of the pro-Hindutva rightwing BJP regime has experienced some sort of epiphany and become deeply religious? Or could it be that by proposing that gods be depicted on currency notes he is merely being canny and pragmatic in a national zeitgeist that is increasingly becoming Hindutva tinged? If you remember that his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has national ambitions and is eyeing to make big gains in the forthcoming elections in Gujarat (it won handsomely in Punjab recently), then it is probably the second motive that is triggering in him such pious thoughts.

National Mourning Over Seoul Stampede

South Korean’s Yoon Declares National Mourning Over Seoul Stampede

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol on Sunday announced a period of national mourning and ordered the lowering of flags over a deadly Seoul stampede during Halloween celebrations that killed at least 151 people, including 19 foreigners, media reports said.

At least 151 people were killed and 82 others were injured in a deadly stampede during Halloween celebrations in Seoul’s Itaewon district on Saturday, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported citing authorities.
A day after the stampede, Yoon in a live address to the nation from the presidential office, said, “It’s truly horrific.” He said that this tragedy should never have happened.

“As president, who is responsible for the people’s lives and safety, my heart is heavy and I struggle to cope with my grief,” he said adding, “the government will designate the period from today until the accident is brought under control as a period of national mourning and will place top priority in administrative affairs in recovery and follow-up measures,” reported South Korea’s Yonhap news agency.

He also ordered all government offices to lower their flags to half-mast, according to his office.

Expressing condolences over the deaths, Yoon wished the injured a speedy recovery. During his address, Yoon said the government will ensure support for the funeral preparations of the people who lost their lives in the deadly incident.

Speaking further, he said that the government is committed to fully mobilizing emergency medical services to treat patients, including by assigning public servants individually to those requiring assistance, the South Korean agency reported.

“The most important thing is to determine the cause of the accident and prevent similar accidents,” he said. “We will thoroughly investigate the cause of the accident and make fundamental improvements so that similar accidents do not happen again in the future.”

The country’s interior ministry and other relevant ministries will do an emergency review of all Halloween celebrations and other local festivals in a bid to ensure safety, he added.

Moreover, Yoon visited the site of the accident and later headed toward central Seoul to preside over a government response meeting.

During a briefing, Choi Seong-beom, the head of the fire department in Yongsan, said the nationalities of the foreigners who were killed in South Korea include those from Iran, Uzbekistan, China, and Norway.

The agency also reported that the victims in their 20s accounted for the age group most affected by the horrific Seoul Halloween stampede. Moreover, the agency, citing the Seoul metropolitan government, said on Sunday it has received about 270 reports of missing persons related to the deadly stampede during Halloween parties in the Itaewon district.

The incident reportedly occurred when a large group of people rushed to an Itaewon bar after hearing an unidentified celebrity was visiting there, Al Jazeera reported citing the local media. Social media footage showed several people being assisted by rescue officials and private citizens at the scene, and many rescue officials performing CPR on people lying in poor condition on the streets.

The packed Halloween festivities in South Korea’s capital of Seoul took place after Covid restrictions were removed, the local officials said. The festivities marked the participation of more than a lakh visitors and the number of casualties is only expected to rise.

Emergency officials received at least 81 calls from people with breathing difficulty, “South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency reported.

A large crowd pushed forward on a narrow street during Halloween festivities, resulting in dozens needing first aid. South Korea’s President Yoon Suk-yeol ordered the dispatch of the emergency medical team to the area and said hospital beds should be prepared to minimize casualties, his office said.

Numerous people had trouble breathing when the chaotic stampede occurred as dozens were seen giving CPR to people lying lifeless on streets post-incident. South Korean President Yoon Suk-Yeol presided over an emergency response meeting Sunday over the deadly stampede, as per the officials.

“Shortly after the accident, Yoon came to the presidential office in Yongsan and presided over a response meeting related to the Seoul Itaewon Halloween accident,” the presidential office said.

“The top priority is transporting and rescuing the patients and providing prompt medical treatment for the affected people,” local media reported quoting Yoon as saying. Authorities are still looking into the exact cause of the accident as the investigation is underway.

Emergency forces were dispatched following the crowd surge which resulted in fatalities. Firefighters and police officers also reached the Itaewon neighborhood in Seoul to bring the situation under control. (ANI)

Chhath Puja Modi

Chhath Puja An Example Of Ek Bharat, Shrestha Bharat: Modi

Extending Chhath Puja greetings in his monthly radio broadcast Mann Ki Baat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said Chhath Puja is a great example of ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat’.

In the 94th episode of his Mann Ki Baat, Prime Minister said, “The festival of Chhath is also an example of Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat. Today, wherever the people of Bihar and Purvanchal are in any corner of the country, Chhath is being celebrated with great pomp”
He said Chhath is now getting organized on a large scale in different districts of Maharashtra along with Delhi, Mumbai and many parts of Gujarat.

“I do remember that earlier in Gujarat, Chhath Puja was not performed to this extent. But with the passage of time, the colours of Chhath Puja have started getting dissolved in almost the whole of Gujarat. I am also very happy to see this. Nowadays we see, how many grand pictures of Chhath Puja come from abroad too. That is, the rich heritage of India, our faith, is reinforcing its identity in every corner of the world,” he said.

“So today, along with worshipping the Sun, why not also discuss his boon? This blessing of Sun God is – solar energy,” PM Modi said.

He said solar energy is a subject in which the whole world is seeing its future. For India, the Sun God has not only been worshipped for centuries, but has also been the focus of our way of life.

Today, Prime Minister said India is combining its traditional experiences with modern science and has become one of the largest countries to generate electricity from solar energy.

How solar energy is changing the lives of the poor and middle class of the country is also a subject of study, he said.

Chhath Puja is an ancient Hindu Vedic festival that is performed to seek blessings from the Sun God for a healthy, happy, and prosperous life. It is believed that sunlight has cures for various diseases and conditions. Taking a dip in the holy river is also considered to have certain medicinal and spiritual benefits. The festival requires maintaining the utmost ritualistic purity.

Also referred to as Surya Shashti, Chhath, Mahaparv, Chhath Parv, Dala Puja, Pratihar and Dala Chhath, the four-day-long festival is dedicated to the deity Surya and Shashthi Devi.

As part of the ritual, women fast for the well-being of their sons and the happiness of their families. They also offer Arghya to Lord Surya and Chhathi Maiya. their sons’ well-being and their families’ happiness

The four-day festival started on October 28, which was a Friday, with the main day and the last day of the puja, being celebrated on October 31, which is falling on Monday.

On each day, people observe the Chhath and follow rigorous rituals. As per Drik Panchang, sunrise on Chhath Puja will be at 06:43 am, and sunset will happen at 06:03 pm. The Shashthi tithi begins at 05:49 am on October 30 and ends at 03:27 am on October 31. (ANI)

BBC Documentary Is Politics: Jaishankar

Jaishankar Lauds Blinken For Giving Strong Counter-Terrorism Message

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday praised US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken for his strong and clear message on counter-terrorism.

He also discussed the Ukraine conflict and other regional issues with Blinken.
“Thanked him for his strong and clear message yesterday on counter-terrorism and 26/11 accountability. Discussed the Ukraine conflict and other regional issues,” tweeted EAM Jaishankar.

In an apparent message to China, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Friday said all relevant parties should support the designation of terrorists and no nation should stand in the way.

He delivered this message via virtual statement during an informal briefing of the Counter-Terrorism Committee at one of the main sites that saw the Mumbai terror attacks – the Taj Hotel in Mumbai.

China, in recent months, has blocked several bids to designate several terrorists based in Pakistan. Beijing this month put on hold a proposal to list Talha Saeed, son of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) chief Hafiz Saeed. This bid was moved by India and co-supported by the US, under the 1267 sanction regime.

Addressing the UN Counter-Terrorism Committee members, Blinken said many members of the security council, including the United States, have adopted their own sanctions against the terrorists behind these attacks.

“But our efforts are more effective when we act together, which is why we worked with India to put the nomination to designate several terrorists through the UN 1267 committee. All relevant parties should support this designation and no nation should stand in the way,” he said.

In his message to the UN committee members, the top US diplomat said Washington is joining New Delhi and people around the world to mourn lives lost, including 141 Indians, 6 Americans, and victims from 15 other countries from every region in the world.

Blinken said India, the United States, and all nations around the world have a responsibility to the victims of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks and to bring to justice the perpetrators of terrorist attacks.

“We have a responsibility to the victims and the people everywhere to bring to justice the perpetrators of the Mumbai attacks including their masterminds. That’s what the US is working to do, together with India and other partners for the last 14 years,” he added.

“Because if we allow the attacks of these attacks go unpunished, we send messages to terrorists everywhere that their heinous crimes will be tolerated,” he added.

Speaking at the counter-terrorism briefing, Jaishankar said the world knows that money is the lifeblood of terrorism.

“Terrorist organizations require funds and resources to maintain their organizational functions and undertake activities. The reality that terrorism continues to exist and expand points to an underlying truth: that terrorism continues to get the necessary financial resources to thrive,” he added. (ANI)

Delhi Police Register FIR Against The Wire Over Malviya’s Complaint

Delhi Police have registered an FIR against ‘The Wire’ after BJP leader Amit Malviya registered a complaint alleging that the news website “forged documents with a view to malign and tarnish” his reputation.

Malviya, who is head of BJP’s Information and Technology Cell, had filed a criminal complaint against The Wire and its top editors with the Special Commissioner of Police (Crime) on Saturday.
In his complaint, the BJP leader sought registration of FIR under sections 420, 468, 469, 471, and 500 r/w 120B and 34 of the Indian Penal Code.

In FIR names mentioned are The Wire, its founding editors Siddharth Vardarajan, Siddharth Bhatia, and MK Venu, and Jahnavi Sen, deputy editor and executive news producer.

The complaint said FIR should also be registered against the Foundation of Independent Journalism and other unknown persons “for the offenses punishable u/s 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 468 (Forgery for purpose of cheating), 469 (Forgery for purpose of harming reputation), 471 (Using as genuine a forged document or electronic record.), 500 (Punishment for Defamation) r/w 120B and 34 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860”.

The complaint to Delhi Police said that “the accused persons have with common intention conspired to maliciously defame the complaint and the BJP by spreading false news to the public”.

The matter pertains to Meta stories which were “retracted” by The Wire. It retracted the stories after Meta and various other experts pointed out critical flaws in their reporting.

Amit Malviya had alleged in a statement on Friday that on October 6, 2022, The Wire published a report claiming that Meta (the parent company that owns Facebook and Instagram) had removed an Instagram post within a few minutes of it being uploaded by a private account namely “Cringearchivist”. The report claimed that the company regularly colludes with members of the BJP in removing content deemed unfavorable to the party.

He further said that on October 10, 2022, the news website went on to claim that “I was the nodal point, interfacing between the party and Meta, for said censorship activity, having been bestowed certain “XCheck” and other privileges by the company”.

“As per the report, this status had bestowed on me the following powers overriding any filters, algorithms, vetting, verification or any other checks and balances within the company,” Malviya said.

He alleged that the report went on to cite alleged internal correspondence of Meta to justify its claims, alleging had used said privileges to take down a total of 705 posts to date.

“On October 11, 2022, Meta’s Communication Head, Andy Stone, issued a categorical denial and stated that the documents presented by ‘The Wire’ in its report were fabricated’ and that the “Xcheck” status had been mischaracterized. Once Meta issued this statement, ‘The Wire’ should have at the very least paused its coverage of this issue and commenced an internal audit. Instead, on the same day, it went on to publish yet another malicious report claiming to have accessed further internal emails of Meta employees, namely those exchanged between Andy Stone and his team, purportedly trying to effect a coverup,” he had said in a statement on Friday.

He had stated that The Wire publicly apologized to its readers on October 27 and retracted the stories about “XCheck” and Meta after scathing public scrutiny and the exposure of significant fabrication of dates, times, and content in its alleged “proof”.

“However, even while retracting the story, The Wire’ refrained from apologizing to me, despite maligning and tarnishing my reputation and causing serious harm to my professional career. My role requires me to vociferously advocate the BJP’s point of view on national issues, across platforms,” he had said.

“This role is based on trust and camaraderie, between me and my interlocutors across platforms and more importantly with the public. However, The Wire’s stories have vitiated the atmosphere and severely dented relationships and trust built over the years for me to carry out the functions of my responsibility,” the BJP leader added.

Stating that The Wire and some unknown persons entered into a “criminal conspiracy” with the intent to “malign and tarnish” his reputation, he said that the news portal “deliberately” inserted his name into a story, and “fabricated” evidence to “implicate” him.

“This also undermines the democratic and informed choices that the public makes, through a carefully calibrated campaign of disinformation and calumny, and does irreparable harm to the democratic right of dissent,” he had said.

The complaint to the police also said that The Wire “with the help of such fabricated and false stories tries to attract viewership on its website wherein readers are requested to donate money in the name of “true and independent journalism”.

Malviya, who is also BJP’s co-in charge for West Bengal, had said on Thursday that he will sue the news website for damages.

“After consultation with my lawyers and seeking their advice, I have decided to file criminal and civil proceedings, against ‘The Wire.’ Not only will I be setting the criminal process in motion but I will also sue them in a civil court seeking damages as they forged documents with a view to malign and tarnish my reputation,” Malviya had said.

Last week, The Wire formally retracted its Meta stories “after conducting an internal review of the technical source material used, with the help of external experts”.

The Wire said it is also conducting a comprehensive editorial review of the internal editorial processes “which resulted in the publication of these stories in order to identify and plug any and all shortcomings”. (ANI)
