Check Facts Before Sharing On Social Media: Modi

Emphasizing the need to create awareness against fake news, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that social media cannot be underestimated and that a small piece of fake news generated by it can create chaos. The Prime Minister appealed for people to check facts before sharing messages on social media.

Addressing a ‘Chintan Shivir’ in Haryana of home ministers of states via video conferencing, PM Modi said, “For the safety and rights of law-abiding citizens, stringent action against negative forces is our responsibility. A small piece of fake news can kick up a storm across the nation…We will have to educate people to think before forwarding anything, verify before believing it…”
He said people must be made aware of the various mechanisms that are now available on all social media platforms to verify messages before forwarding them.

“Fact check of fake news is a must. Technology plays a big role in this. People must be made aware of mechanisms to verify messages before forwarding them,” the prime minister said.

Prime Minister said that one should not limit social media to being the source of information.

He said that a piece of single fake news has the capability to snowball into a matter of national concern.

The Prime Minister said during the reservation issue, the country had to face losses due to fake news. He said people should think 10 times before forwarding any messages on social media.

He stressed on the need to educate people about analyzing and verifying information before forwarding it on social media platforms.

Emphasizing the internal security of the country, Prime Minister said India needs to defeat the threats that are arising from Naxalism be it “gun-toting or pen-wielding”.

“In past few years, all governments have acted responsibly to demolish ground network of terror…We need to handle it by combining our forces. We will have to defeat all forms of Naxalism – be it gun-totting or pen-wielding, we will have to find a solution for all of them,” PM said.

Highlighting the importance of having a smart law and order system on par with advanced technologies, PM Modi said the agencies have to be 10 steps ahead of the crime world.

He said, “Today the nature of crimes is changing. We need to understand the new age technologies. We entered the 5G era. Hence we need to be more vigilant,” Prime Minister said.

With 5G technology, PM said there will be manifold improvement in facial recognition technology, automatic number plate recognition technology, and drone and CCTV technology.

“With the advancement in 5G technology, awareness is equally important. It is to be ensured that India’s law and order system becomes smart. Technology not only helps in the prevention of crimes but also in crime investigation. We will have to be 10 steps ahead of the crime world,” he said.

PM said there is a need to have a positive perspective. He called for improved synergy among the police stations with cooperation, rapport, and a streamlined mechanism.

In order to improve the efficiency of the police and strengthen law and order, Prime Minister said the interconnectedness between the police of different states is an important aspect.

He said, “Law and order is not restricted to one state now. Crime is turning interstate and international. With technology, criminals now have increased their power to commit crimes. Criminals beyond the border are misusing technology. Be it cybercrime or the usage of drone technology for the smuggling of weapons or drugs, we will have to keep working on new technology for them.”

The coordination between agencies of all states and between central and state agencies is essential, PM said.

This Chintan Shivir of home ministers in Surajkund Prime Minister said is an excellent example of cooperative federalism. He said States can learn from each other, take inspiration from each other and work together for the betterment of the country.

He said the next 25 years will be for the creation of an ‘amrit peedhi’. This ‘amrit peedhi’ will be created by imbibing the resolutions of ‘Panch Pran’ – creation of a developed India, freedom from all colonial mindset, pride in heritage, unity, and most importantly, citizen duty.

TRS, BJP Two Sides Of Same Coin: Rahul In Telangana

Amid the MLA poaching controversy, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has hit out at the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stating that both parties are two sides of the same coin and are against democratic values and indulge in politics of money.

The Congress MP accused both the TRS and BJP of horse-trading and toppling governments.
“I would like to say clearly here that, for us, BJP and TRS are the same. They are two sides of the same coin. They both work together. You need to understand this. They help each other. TRS helps BJP in Delhi and BJP helps TRS in Telangana. Both parties are against democracy and indulge in the politics of money. They do money politics by buying MLAs and both parties work to topple the government,” said the Congress leader in Narayanpet.

Notably, TRS had alleged that the BJP is attempting to poach the MLAs by luring them with money and contracts. in which the Cyberabad Police had arrested three persons at a farmhouse in Ranga Reddy on Wednesday evening, after being informed by the TRS MLAs about the poaching bid, which the leaders alleged was done by the BJP.

However, Telangana’s Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) court rejected the request of Cyberabad Police to remand the three accused to judicial custody.

The BJP has moved to the Telangana High Court seeking a CBI probe into the allegations.

Moreover, Union minister and BJP leader G Kishan Reddy refuted the TRS MLAs’ poaching allegations and said it shows the fear the TRS is looming under and demanded the probe be conducted by sitting High Court judges.

After a gap of four days, Rahul Gandhi resumed the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ from Makthal in Narayanpet district on Thursday.

Rahul Gandhi started the march on Friday from Yeligandla in the Narayanpet district of Telangana. Today is the third day of the yatra in the state.

The yatra will halt at Mahabubnagar tonight.

Pictures Of Gods On Currency: Kejriwal Writes To Modi

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday said he has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting him to put pictures of Lord Ganesh and Goddess Lakshmi on currency notes stating that “it is a desire of 130 crore Indians.”

“I have written a letter to the Prime Minister, and have requested him on behalf of 130 crore Indians that the Indian currency notes should have photos of Lakshmi and Ganesha apart from that of Mahatma Gandhi,” Kejriwal tweeted in Hindi along with the letter.
“It is the desire of the 130 crore people of the country that there should be a picture of Mahatma Gandhi on one side and of Ganesh and Lakshmi on the other side of the Indian currency. Today the economy of the country is passing through a very bad phase. Even after 75 years of independence, India is counted among the developing and poor countries. There are so many people still poor in our country. Why?” Kejriwal said in his letter to PM Modi.

Emphasizing that there is a need for the blessings of God to make our efforts fruitful, the Delhi Chief Minister said, “On one hand, we all countrymen need to work hard and on the other hand, we also need the blessings of God so that our efforts are fruitful. Only with the confluence of the right policy, hard work, and God’s blessings the country will be on the path of progress.”

Kejriwal further said that since he had demanded to put Lord Ganesh and Goddess Lakshmi on banknotes there has been tremendous support from the general public.

“I publicly demanded this in a press conference. Since then there has been tremendous support from the general public on this issue. People are very excited about it. Everyone wants this to be implemented immediately,” he added.

Earlier on Wednesday, Kejriwal has appealed to Prime Minister Modi to consider including the images of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesh on currency notes in India to “improve the economic situation of the country”.

“Today I appeal to the central government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. On Indian currency there is a photo of Gandhi ji, let that be, on the other side of currency, a photo of Shri Ganesh Ji and Lakshmi ji should be put.

“As I said we have to make a lot of effort to improve the economic situation of our country. But also with that, we need blessings from Gods and Goddesses. The whole country will get blessings if on currency notes, there is a photo of Ganesh Ji and Lakshmi ji on one side and Gandhi ji on other side,” Kejriwal said in his address.

“If Indonesia can do it; choose Ganesh Ji, so can we… I will write to the Centre tomorrow or the day after tomorrow to appeal for it… we need the Almighty’s blessings apart from the efforts to settle the economic condition of the country,” Kejriwal said.

Lord Ganesha is inscribed on the 20,000 rupiah note of Indonesia.

However, the Delhi Chief Minister faced backlash for his remark from several Opposition parties including the BJP.

Both BJP and Congress slammed the Delhi Chief Minister and termed his statement “vote bank politics” ahead of Assembly elections in Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat.

Notably, India’s foreign exchange reserves during the week that ended on October 14 fell to an over two-year low of USD 528.367 billion, a drop of USD 4.5 billion from the previous week.

In the preceding week, the country’s foreign exchange reserves were at USD 532.868 billion, RBI data showed.

According to RBI’s data, India’s foreign currency assets, which are the biggest component of the forex reserves, declined by USD 2.828 billion to USD 468.668 billion during the week.

The value of gold reserves dropped by USD 1.5 billion to USD 37.453 billion during the week.

The value of India’s Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) with the International Monetary Fund declined by USD 149 million to USD 17.433 billion during the week under review, the RBI data showed. The reserves have been falling for months now because of RBI’s likely intervention in the market to defend the depreciating rupee against a surging US dollar.

For the record, the Indian rupee has been weakening over the past few weeks to hit fresh new all-time lows as the US dollar strengthened against major global currencies. (ANI)

Elon Musk

Bird Is Freed Tweets Elon, Will Reverse Life Bans

After completing his USD 44 billion acquisition of Twitter Inc, Elon Musk has said that he intends to replace Parag Agrawal as CEO of the social media platform and also intends to reverse the permanent ban on users, according to a Bloomberg report.

Agrawal was fired along with other major executives upon completion of the takeover, Bloomberg on Friday reported citing a person familiar with the matter.
The Tesla and Space X owner is expected to remain CEO of Twitter in the interim period but may eventually cede the role in the longer term, the report said.

According to multiple reports in US media, Twitter’s Chief Financial Officer Ned Segal and Vijaya Gadde its legal and policy executive as well as Ned Segal, its chief financial officer Ned Segal was asked to go.

Musk ahead of his USD 44 billion Twitter acquisition deal had dismissed speculation about why he’d buy the micro-blogging platform and his thoughts on advertising.

“The reason I acquired Twitter is that it is important to the future of civilization to have a common digital town square, where a wide range of beliefs can be debated in a healthy manner, without resorting to violence. There is currently great danger that social media will splinter into far right-wing and far left-wing echo chambers that generate more hate and divide our society,” he said in a statement on Thursday.

The Tesla founder said that Twitter should be “warm and welcoming to all” and enable users to choose the experience they want to have. Further, Musk told advertisers that he wants the platform to be “the most respected advertising platform in the world.”

Meanwhile, on Wednesday Musk walked into the headquarters of Twitter in San Francisco, carrying the bowl of a sink. This action was the object of several memes on the internet.

Musk tweeted a video of himself carrying a kitchen sink and captioned it “let that sink in!”

He also changed his Twitter profile to read “Chief Twit”.

In July, in a surprising turn of events, Elon Musk who had long been showing his interest to buy Twitter terminated the deal. The Tesla CEO did so by alleging that Twitter violated their mutual purchase agreement by misrepresenting the number of spam and fake bot accounts on its platform.

After Musk put out the deal termination announcement, the market saw a sharp decline. Later, Twitter sued Musk accusing him of using bots as a pretext to exit a deal.

Again, last week, Musk confirmed that he would move forward with the Twitter buyout at the originally agreed price of USD 54.20 per share. However, the Twitter deal legal proceedings had been put on hold by a judge overseeing the dispute until October 28. (ANI)

Bharat Jodo Yatra

Jab Jab Gandhi Chalta Hai, Tab Tab Desh Badalta Hai

Dr Nousheen Baba Khan, a college teacher in Kolkata, travelled from Kolkata to Karnataka to be a part of Bharat Jodo Yatra in the hope to save the idea of India. Her views:

I travelled from Kolkata to Karnataka with my friends to join the Bharat Jodo Yatra (BJY). Friends included: Santanu Sinha Chaudhuri, 71, banker and English teacher whom I met in Bangalore because his daughter is located there and Md Imtiyaz, 25, a tailor pursuing MA in Urdu. I was not alone in ‘not’ having any relations with the Congress party, there were many like me; for instance, Vishalakshi Padmanabhan, a former chartered accountant who has pursued organic farming to repair distress in the farming sector in Karnataka, and Savita Hiremathe, a Bangalore-based independent journalist, lecturer and environmental activist;.

My conviction surfaced due to many reasons. My efforts, at times, to restore communal harmony and peace through research-writing, social mobilization and social media / academic activities, seemed to be going in vain. Hate, negativity and a terrorizing atmosphere; it affected my emotional well-being! Besides, the irrational ways to deal with scientific problems were becoming way too much for a political science major. The Yatra gave me hope because the narrative is based on unity, a run or walk that connects, which is inclusive; you do not feel left out for your identity. Since Bengal was not on the route, and since I had to be a part of this historic ‘movement’, I joined it.

As a responsible citizen, other important issues that made my participation firm are those which the common people have been long struggling with: jobs, inflation and corruption. BJY has firmly placed these ‘sidelined issues’ into the main political discourse now.

I started from Rampura with morning break at Madenhalli in Andhra Pradesh on Day 37, October 14, crossed Bellary, walked through Karnataka, and ended my participation again at the Karnataka-Andhra border four days later., I rendered my solidarity. On the very first day of the walk, I felt ‘this is what I have been doing and this is exactly how I want my India to move ahead, with the principles of communal peace and harmony’. That was a turning point. I spoke to the civil society in-charge of the Yatra, Yogendra Yadav. I said that I want to mobilize the people of Bengal because they also deserve to know about the Yatra which touches all basic issues.

ALSO READ: ‘Bharat Jodo Is A Healing Touch To This Wounded Nation’

We tried to explain to people that we have specifically come this far to participate in BJY, they were astonished. Some yatris in Karnataka with whom I chanted slogans, addressed me as ‘Madam Bengali’. And we interacted with sign language. All of us knew why we were here – ‘Jodo, Bharat Jodo’, or ‘Jodisi, Bharata Jodisi’ became our mode of interaction with everyone we came across.

And yes, there was a chance encounter with Rahul Gandhi! Whenever I have met political leaders, I have always tried to have a dialogue on issues. It has never been as random as with Rahul Gandhi. I had no placard, no poster, no flowers to approach him. He was 500 meters away when I was walking with Yogendra Yadav. I told him that I want to meet RG. He said, ‘Go ahead’. I crossed the rope and rushed where he was surrounded by his security personnel. I shouted, ‘Rahul sir’, and caught his eye. There were other voices calling out as well. I shouted, ‘Rahul sir, I am from Kolkata’. He directed his security guards to let me in and I went blank seeing him so close!

He asked me, ‘How are you’? I said, ‘Congratulations sir! I am fine’. The word, ‘congratulations’, was spontaneous and from the heart, for what he and his Yatra has achieved so far. I lifted my both thumbs as a sign and said, ‘All the best sir and we love you’. He smiled and patted me on my shoulder.

I will rejoin the Yatra in Maharashtra. My friends from Kolkata, one from the law fraternity, a senior scholar, and three activists, are willing to join. It is all extremely positive. The Shiv Sena and NCP are rendering support with the civil society in Maharashtra. I will meet my fellow comrades who participated in the peaceful protests against the NRC/CAA, and whom I never could meet earlier. We have already made plans to catch up with each other.

I am looking forward to the participation of farmers, because farmers’ suicides have been maximum in Maharashtra. I would watch out for participation from Bollywood – if any!  We have seen how movies are used as propaganda tools, how movies and actors were boycotted, how Deepika Padukone, Amir Khan, Ranvir and others were subject to vicious trolls because of their personal choices and opinion; the episode of Aryan Khan is still fresh in our minds.

I feel that ‘Jab Jab Gandhi Chalta Hai, Tab Tab Desh Badalta Hai’. Gandhiji walked against inequality and discrimination, and we have his image walking with the stick. Rahul Gandhi is walking to mend the intrinsic character of India based on social harmony, peace, progress, economic development. The mainstream media has ignored it initially, maligning it, but the people’s mood is set. They do not buy these views. They reject it. This is the new change which India is witnessing.

I end with the words of great Urdu poet Mir: Ibtada-e-ishq hai rota hai kya… Aage aage dekhiye hota hai kya.

CM Stalin Silence over coimbatore blast

BJP Questions CM Stalin’s Silence Over Coimbatore Blast

Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party president K Annamalai on Thursday asked a couple of questions to Chief Minister MK Stalin in connection with the Coimbatore “suicide bombing” incident, and asked if he will remain in “silent mode”.

The incident took place on October 23 when an LPG cylinder inside a Maruti 800, Jameesha Mubin, the person who was charred to death, exploded near a temple around 4 am. Six persons have been arrested so far in connection with the case.

Questioning Stalin over the incident, Annamalai asked why was the state government “caught napping” when there was a “specific threat alert” flagged by the central agencies five days ahead of the blast.

“Two questions for @CMOTamilnadu 1. There was a specific threat alert given by central intelligence agencies to TN Govt on Oct 18th, 2022. This is five days before the ‘suicide bombing’ incident. Why was the state govt caught napping?” the BJP state chief tweeted.

The BJP leader further asked the reason behind stopping the monitoring of the activities of Mubin who he called a “suicide bomber”, as against the instructions to monitor his activities (after NIA’s Enquiry in 2019).

“When the TN state intelligence and Coimbatore police were asked to monitor the activities of the ‘suicide bomber’ & now deceased Mubin (after NIA’s Enquiry in 2019) and the local police were doing initially but stopped after a while. Why was it stopped after DMK came to power?” he tweeted.

He asked if it was done “because of political pressure”.

“Is it because of political pressure not to monitor ‘certain’ individuals? Will our CM care to answer, or as usual, will he be in ‘silent mode?” Annamalai tweeted.

Meanwhile, CM Stalin recommended an NIA probe into the incident following which the Centre ordered the NIA investigation. The agency registered an FIR into the case today.

Earlier today, Telangana Director general of police Sylendra Babu said that NIA will take over the case.

“As soon as it happened, officers rushed to the place & doused the fire. We identified the deceased and within a few days, we were able to unearth the truth. 6 people have been arrested & taken into custody. CM has recommended the case to NIA,” he said.

“Based on the orders of MHA, officers of NIA will work out the moralities. NIA has already registered a case and will take over. This has been discussed with the Commissioner as well,” the DGP added.

However, the officer refused to comment on the allegations levelled by Annamalai.
