Weekly News Wrap

Five Things That Happened Last Week (And What to Make of Them)

Why banning media doesn’t usually work

Early last week, BBC aired the second part of the documentary, India: The Modi Question, in Britain. The Indian government has banned the series and social media and streaming platforms have complied with the government’s order. Yet, many have resorted to other means of downloading the series and distributing it for viewing.

While the first episode focused mainly on the 2002 riots in Gujarat and its aftermath, the second and final episode looks mainly at the “religious turmoil” that has ensued in the years after the Modi regime began. The report is comprehensive and also includes views of the police, the government and other authorities. It focuses on the eruption of lynchings related to cow slaughter and on the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019.

As expected, the documentary and the government action that has followed have led to political ripples. In Kerala, the Congress has screened the documentary in Thiruvananthapuram and although the Congress is in the Opposition in that state, the ruling CPM government has opposed the central government’s ban on the documentary.

It is a common trend that banning exercises such as this one is usually futile. In fact, often a ban on books, movies or other media can lead to heightened interest among the public and that has happened in the case of the BBC film as well. People have been sharing foreign site links where the documentary can be watched; and others have used virtual private networks (VPNs) to bypass the geographic ban. The Congress leader Rahul Gandhi commented: “Truth shines bright. It has a nasty habit of coming out. So no amount of banning, oppression and frightening people is going to stop the truth from coming out.”

To be sure, the documentary makes no big or unforeseen revelations. Much of what has been depicted–whether it is related to the riots or to the references about how Muslims in India have been feeling insecure in the past few years–is already in the public domain. In that context, the government’s decision to ban it could seem hasty and not well thought through. Instead of a ban, an official statement condemning it or rebutting the points that irk the Modi regime could have sufficed. Such a response could also be better for the image of the government, depicting it as a supporter of free speech rather than an authoritarian regime that does not tolerate any form of criticism.

Adani group in the centre of a controversy

An American short-seller activist fund and investment research group has accused the Adani Group (revenues in 2022: $23.3 billion), a conglomerate that is headed by Gautam Adani with interests in infrastructure of what it has called the “biggest con in corporate history”. Hindenburg Research’s report on the group has already wiped out billions of dollars in market capitalisation of the listed stocks of the group. Adani is the world’s third richest man and Asia’s richest. He is also believed to be close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Hindenburg report accuses the group of widespread manipulation of stocks through undisclosed transactions by using entities in offshore tax havens such as Mauritius and the Caribbean islands. These transactions are believed to have hidden the substantial debt that the group has making it financially “precarious”, according to Hindenburg Research.

Adani Group has refuted the allegations and says that it intends to sue the research firm, which is an investment research firm with a focus on activist short-selling, founded by Nathan Anderson. Adani group says the report is malicious and was intended to sabotage the group’s follow-up public offer. But although banks were worried about the $2.5 billion share sale following the crash in the group’s share values, the group itself said the issue remains on schedule.

Manipulation of stocks via offshore entities that are indirectly linked to promoters is not uncommon in India. There have been many instances by big industrial houses that have resorted to the practice, which is inherently illegal. The charges against the Adani group are likely to be contested in court but the fact remains that the group, whose meteoric rise has been impressive, will be impacted by the taint on its reputation.

Many firsts for India on Republic Day

India celebrated its 74th Republic Day with the customary parade in New Delhi. This year’s chief guest was Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. But there were many new highlights of the celebration this year.

It was the first time that the renamed and revamped Kartavya Path (previously known as Raj Path) was the venue of the celebrations, which were flagged off by President Droupadi Murmu. One of the highlights of this year’s parade was an all-woman marching contingent of the Central Reserve Police, and the representation of several women in many of the other contingents. The Navy contingent, for instance, was led by a woman officer.

Also, in the spirit of self-reliance, the emphasis was on showcasing Indian-made defence equipment such as Arjun tanks and the Akash missile system. The Prime Minister, in a message to the people, said: “I wish that we move forward unitedly to fulfill the dreams of the country’s great freedom fighters. Happy Republic Day to all fellow Indians!”

In all, there were 23 tableaux, representing states, union territories, and government institutions, which depicted Indian culture, heritage, and progress. India’s Republic Day celebration is a grand annual event that aims to demonstrate the country’s development, tradition, and, of course, military prowess. This year, it also celebrated the ascension of women in the armed forces and related organisations.

Opium production in Myanmar is on a high

As it had happened in Afghanistan, with Myanmar’s economy under severe pressure, after the military rule began in the country in 2021, opium production has soared. According to reports by a United Nations’ body, there was a 33% increase in poppy cultivation in Myanmar and an 88% increase in potential opium yield. Opium is used to make heroin, the highly addictive drug, and a surge in its output near the eastern borders of India should be cause for concern.

BBC quoted Jeremy Douglas, the regional representative of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) as saying: “Economic, security and governance disruptions that followed the military takeover of February 2021 have converged, and farmers in remote, often conflict-prone areas in northern Shan and border states, have had little option but to move back to opium.”

What does this mean for India? India shares a 1,643-km long border with Myanmar that passes through four States: Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram. Opium or its highly addictive derivative heroin could find its way across the borders to India and become a conduit to the global market for the drug.

This should raise an alarm for Indian authorities to pre-empt and tighten controls against drug smuggling into the country.

Pathaan, the movie, breaks records

In December, Pathaan, a Bollywood movie starring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone was embroiled in a controversy over a song, Besharam Rang. The visuals accompanying the song showed Padukone in a bikini coloured orange (which is close to saffron). According to Hindu mythology, saffron is the colour of sunset and fire, which represent sacrifice, light, and quest of salvation. The colour is usually used (as in robes for sadhus and in flags) to symbolise devotion to the religion.

The film and the song (whose title can be translated as “shameless colour”) led to protests by Hindu activists and also created political ripples in a country where a Hindu nationalist party is in power.

The film, however, has turned out to be a blockbuster. When it was released on January 25, a day before Republic Day, in a single day it netted ₹57 crore at the box office. In addition, it also created a record worldwide, earning ₹106 crore globally. Pathaan is billed as a comeback movie for Khan who is 57. And its record box office revenues already show that despite any controversy, movie mania in India goes on unabated.

Digital Payments Ecosystem Transformed Governance: Modi

Ramsar Sites In Country Increased Nearly Three Times Since 2014: Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday underlined that the number of Ramsar sites in the country has increased to 75, which is close to thrice of what India had in 2014.

Addressing the 97th edition of the Mann Ki Baat programme on Sunday, PM Modi said that wetlands in any country have to fulfil certain criteria, then only they can be declared as Ramsar sites.
He said that the number of Ramsar sites in the country has increased to 75 which was earlier only 26 till 2014.

“Wetlands may be there in any country, but they have to fulfil many criteria, then only they can be declared as Ramsar Sites. Now the total number of Ramsar Sites in our country has increased to 75, whereas, before 2014 there were only 26 Ramsar Sites in the country,” PM Modi said.

Wetlands are the places where water remains accumulated throughout the year on marshy soil-like land.

“We have been continuously talking about India’s concrete efforts in the direction of climate change and conservation of biodiversity. A few days later, on February 2, it is World Wetlands Day. They are very important for the existence of our earth because many birds and animals are dependent on them for their survival,” PM Modi said.

He said that most of the world’s Ramsar sites have a unique cultural heritage.

Ramsar Sites are wetlands of international importance designated under the criteria of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands for containing representative, rare or unique wetland types or for their importance in conserving biological diversity.

PM Modi said that the increased number of Ramsar sites is also a tribute to the country’s age-old culture and tradition of living in harmony with nature. He cited the example of the culture of Manipur, which has a deep connection with Loktak and the sacred lake Renuka. He also mentioned Chilika Lake in Odisha which is known for sheltering more than 40 Water Bird Species.

“Kaibul-Lamjaa, Loktak is considered to be the only natural habitat of the Swamp Deer. Similarly, Sambhar is also related to Shakambhari Devi, an incarnation of Maa Durga,” he added.

He further lauded the people involved in the conservation of biodiversity and said that the expansion of wetlands could only happen because of the people living around these Ramsar sites.

Vedanthangal of Tamil Nadu was declared a Ramsar Site in 2022. The entire credit for preserving the bird population here goes to the farmers in the neighbourhood, the PM said, adding the Panjath Nag community in Kashmir spends a day, especially cleaning the village spring during the Annual Fruit Blossom festival.

Most of the Words Ramsar Sites also have a Unique cultural heritage, he said.

“Along with enriching Biodiversity, they also ensure Flood control and Ground Water Recharge. Many of you must be knowing that Ramsar Sites are such wetlands which are of international importance…Ramsar Sites should have 20,000 or more water birds. It is important to have a large number of local fish species,” the Prime Minister added. (ANI)

Pakistan: Increase In Petrol And Diesel Price

Pakistan government has announced an increase in petrol and diesel prices by Pakistan rupees (PKR) 35 per litre. Pakistan Finance Minister Ishaq Dar made the announcement regarding the increase in fuel prices and it has come into effect from 11 am on January 29, Dawn reported.

Ishaq Dar made the announcement in a televised address on Sunday. He said that the price of kerosene oil and light diesel oil were increased by PKR 18 per litre. Pakistan Finance Ministry in a tweet said that the new price of petrol is PKR 249.80 per litre and diesel is PKR 262.80 per litre.
“We have decided to increase the price of petrol and diesel by Rs 35. The price of kerosene oil and light diesel oil has been increased by Rs18,” Dar said, adding that the new prices would come into effect at 11 am today.

Pakistan Finance Ministry tweeted, “Govt announced new prices of Petroleum Products with effect from 11.00 hrs, 29 Jan, 2023. High Speed Diesel-Rs 262.80 per litre MS Petrol –Rs 249.80 per litre Kerosene Oil -Rs 189.83 per litre Light Diesel Oil – Rs 187 per litre.”

Pakistan Finance Minister Ishaq Dar stressed that the government has decided to increase the minimum price of these four products according to the instruction given by Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, according to Dawn.

Ishaq Dar said that the Pakistani rupee witnessed devaluation last week and they are witnessing an 11 per cent rise in the price of petroleum products in the international market. He said that the price of petrol was not increased since October.

“The Pakistani rupee saw devaluation last week […] and now we are seeing an 11 per cent increase in the prices of petroleum products in the international market,” Dawn quoted Ishaq Dar as saying.

“Despite international prices and rupee devaluation, on directions of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, we have decided to increase the minimum price of these four products,” he added.

Ishaq Dar expressed hope that the announcement of new prices will dispel rumours about the shortage of petrol supplies, as per the news report. He said that there were speculations on social media that the price of petrol and diesel will be increased by Rs 50. According to Dawn, Ishaq Dar said, “Because of this, we have received reports of artificial shortages in the market.”

Ahead of Dar’s announcement, rumours of a massive increase in petrol prices led to long queues at petrol pumps in many parts of Pakistan. Reports posted on social media had said that the price of petrol and diesel were expected to increase between Rs 45 to Rs 80 on February 1.

“We saw a report on social media that oil prices will go up due to the surge in the dollar’s value and international petroleum rates,” Dawn quoted Hassan, who queued at a petrol pump.

Petrol was available at only 20 per cent of the petrol pumps in Gujranwala. The shortages of fuel were reported in Rahim Yar Khan, Bahawalpur, Sialkot and Faisalabad regions of Pakistan, Dawn cited Geo News report. (ANI)

Pathaan Watching Experience

‘Pathaan Brings Back Old World Fans Revelry To Movie Theatres’

Rituparna Sengupta, who teaches and writes on literature & popular culture, says the movie is a cracking response to the vitriolic trolling SRK has faced lately

I went to watch Pathaan after coming across media reports and social-media videos of over-the-top audience reactions to the film. As a cinema buff and a student of popular culture, I was curious about the movie, especially since the last time a Bollywood film elicited such a charged reaction within the theatre was last year, with The Kashmir Files, though it belongs to a different genre. I was also intrigued by the discourse around Pathaan, dubbed as the triumphant return of not only ‘King Khan’ but also of the single-screen-theatre-like film-viewing experience, with the audience clapping, rooting and whistling in pure joy.

I went for a morning show and found that, indeed, there was this current of jubilance in the audience. Many were taking photos and videos of the film’s scenes, not for pirating it, but just to record memories of watching it on the big screen. The atmosphere was electric.

People came to watch Pathaan for varied reasons—ranging from SRK fandom, to showing solidarity against the vitriolic propaganda against the actor and his family, to the timing of the film’s release (Republic Day). But what interests me is the film’s symbolic value, at multiple levels.

The espionage thriller is a masculine, testosterone-driven drama with loud and flashy stunts, exotic locations, femme fatales, etc. For a romantic hero like SRK—massively popular among female fans—to play such a protagonist, is a gamble. However, instead of ‘hardening’ Shah Rukh Khan to meet the demands of the genre, the film allows SRK to bend the genre to suit his strengths–something that pays off well.

Sengupta (left) says ‘Pathaan’ has trademark romantic SRK at work

For instance, instead of the brash arrogance of the spy hero, here we have a charming character who wears himself lightly and is comfortable not being in the centre of the frame always. We see trademark SRK at work here–husky whispers, eyes-teasing and passionate by-turns, unafraid to Be vulnerable, joking and pretending to be more inept than he is. The way the Pathaan romances with Rubai (Deepika Padukone) is in his characteristic too-near-but-no-further titillating fashion. There is an old world charm about Pathaan’s ‘chivalry’.

ALSO READ: Cancel Culture is Coronavirus of Bollywood

Then there is the suffusion of references to earlier Bollywood films in Pathaan, especially to SRK’s oeuvre, which offer a nostalgic treat to many like me who grew up attached to these films. Watching SRK crooning ‘Tu hai meri Karen’ to a Russian woman, sent the audience tittering in delight, and, similarly, the exclamation ‘Bhaag Pathaan, bhaag!’ brought to mind a similar scene from the cult favourite, Karan Arjun.

I think the highlight for many who watched the film were the sequences that brought together Shah Rukh and Salman (in a surprise cameo) who have been seen as forming the ruling Khan triad (along with Aamir) in Bollywood of the post-liberalisation decades. To see these competing actors come together as allies, but also in such good humour, was fun.

The film’s political standpoint is conservative, but in a cultural climate where jingoism is incentivised and Bollywood is succumbing to it, the film takes pains to clarify its preference for a popular, secular patriotism. When a rogue Indian agent (played by John Abraham) taunts Pathaan about his unrequited love for ‘Bharat Mata’, Pathaan responds with ‘Jai Hind’ and JFK’s iconic quote about not asking what the nation can do for you but what you can do for it. On the face value, it’s a cliché, but seen as the response of a hounded star who has responded to Islamophobic vitriol with dignified silence, it becomes eloquent.

The film builds up Pathaan’s character as a people’s hero—someone whose identity is not defined by parentage or religion, but by the affection and trust of the people who welcome him, give him his name, and a mission to fulfill–being the molten gold that holds together the broken pieces of a wounded nation. And it is the symbolic charge of this ‘Pathaan promise’ of a people’s beloved star, which has made the film the phenomenon it is.
