Modi Remembers Lata Didi, Bismillah Khan In Mann Ki Baat

In his 98th ‘Mann Ki Baat’ address on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi touched upon a lot of topics while also declaring the winners of ‘Unity Day’ special three competitions.

Before announcing the name of the winners, Prime Minister Modi said, “Friends, you might remember that on Sardar Patel’s birth anniversary i.e. ‘Unity Day’, we talked of three competitions in ‘Mann Ki Baat’.

hese competitions — ‘Geet’ – Patriotic Songs, ‘Lullabies’ and ‘Rangoli’ — were held on this day. I am glad to inform you, that more than 5 lakh people from more than 700 districts across the country participated at these events enthusiastically. Children, adults and even the elderly enthusiastically participated and entries were sent in more than 20 languages. Many many congratulations to all the participants in these competitions from my side. Each one of you, in your own right, is a champion, and an art seeker. You all have shown how much love you have for the diversity and culture of your country.”
Remembering the late melody Queen Lata Mangeshkar, PM Modi said, “Friends, today on this occasion it is very natural for me to remember Lata Mangeshkar ji, Lata Didi. Because on the day this competition started, Lata Didi had urged the countrymen by tweeting that they must join in this endeavour.”

Later in his address, the Prime Minister also invoked Ustad Bismillah Khan while talking about how the popularity of some classical music instruments has decreased with time.

He also brought up Joydeep Mukherjee, an instrumentalist who was recently conferred with the ‘Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar’ — an award for emerging, talented artists in the field of music and performing arts.

He said, “My dear countrymen, whether it is about Banaras or the Shehnai or Ustad Bismillah Khan-ji, it is natural that my attention will be drawn in that direction. A few days ago, ‘Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar’ were conferred. These awards were given to emerging, talented artists in the field of music and performing arts. These, along with the rising popularity of the art and music world, are also contributing to their enrichment. These also include artistes who have breathed new life into instruments whose popularity had been dwindling with time.”

His remark was followed by a tune, after which Prime Minister Modi continued, “Do you know what instrument this is? It is possible that you may not be aware of it. The name of this musical instrumental mantra is ‘Sursingar’ and this tune has been composed by Joydeep Mukherjee. Joydeep-ji is one of our emerging, young artistes who has been honoured with the Ustad Bismillah Khan Award. Listening to the sweet notes of this instrument from the late 50s and 60s was starting to become a rare experience. But, Joydeep is now putting his heart and soul into restoring and persevering the Sursingar for our future generations.” (ANI)

Will Cut Aid To Pak, China: Republican Prez Candidate Haley

Will Cut Aid To Pak, China: Republican Prez Candidate Haley

US Republican Party, Grand Old Party (GOP) Presidential candidate Nikki Haley has said that if voted to power, she will cut every cent in foreign aid for countries that hate the US. This includes China, Pakistan and other adversaries as “a strong America doesn’t pay off the bad guys”.

“I will cut every cent in foreign aid for countries that hate us. A strong America doesn’t pay off the bad guys. A proud America doesn’t waste our people’s hard-earned money. And the only leaders who deserve our trust are those who stand up to our enemies and stand beside our friends,” Haley, the Former Governor of South Carolina and former US ambassador to the UN, wrote in an op-ed for New York Post.

According to Haley, America spent USD 46 billion on foreign aid last year. That’s more than any other country by far. Taxpayers deserve to know where that money is going and what it’s doing. They will be shocked to find that much of it goes to fund anti-American countries and causes.

Nikki Haley formally launched her 2024 campaign for the White House on February 15 (local time), pitching herself to voters as part of a “new generation” of Republican leaders who can win at the ballot box.

Haley is now the first Indian American woman from the Republican Party to run for the presidential bid. As the former governor of South Carolina and US ambassador to the United Nations, took the stage, Haley introduced herself as the proud daughter of Indian immigrants pitching a new future for the Republican party.

Haley in the Op-ed, while citing examples said that the US has given Iran more than USD 2 billion over the last few years, even though its government is getting closer to the murderous thugs in Iran who shout “Death to America!” and launch attacks on our troops.

“The Biden administration resumed military aid to Pakistan, though it’s home to at least a dozen terrorist organizations and its government is deeply in hock to China. Team Biden restored half a billion dollars to a corrupt United Nations agency that’s supposed to help the Palestinian people but in fact covers for deeply anti-Semitic propaganda against our ally Israel,” she said.

The US has given hundreds of millions of dollars to Zimbabwe, a country with one of the most anti-American voting records in the UN.

American taxpayers still give money to Communist China for ridiculous environmental programs, despite the obvious threat China poses to Americans. We give money to Belarus, which is Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s closest ally. We even give money to Communist Cuba — a country our own government has designated as a state sponsor of terrorism, Haley stated in her Op-ed for the New York Post.

“This is not just Joe Biden. It’s been happening for decades under presidents of both parties. Our foreign-aid policies are stuck in the past. They typically operate on autopilot, with no consideration for the conduct of the countries that receive our aid. It will take a determined president to root out these taxpayer rip-offs.”

Haley said she is running for the president’s post to restore US’s strength, national pride, people’s trust. Backing American allies and friends like Israel and Ukraine is smart. Sending our tax dollars to enemies isn’t.

“I will be that president, just as I was that ambassador,” Haley wrote.

“As ambassador, I strongly supported President Donald Trump’s decision to cut nearly USD 2 billion of military aid to Pakistan because that country supports terrorists who kill American troops. It was a major victory for our troops, our taxpayers and our vital interests, but it didn’t go nearly far enough. We’ve still given them way too much in other aid. As president, I will block every penny,” the US presidential candidate further wrote.

With the aim of moving from the “stale ideas and faded ideas” of the past, the Indian American leader Nikki Haley on February 15 (Wednesday) announced her candidacy for the 2024 Republican Presidential nomination.

After Republican leader Nikki Haley, another Indian-American, healthcare and tech sector entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy on Wednesday (local time) announced his 2024 US presidential election bid.

“We’ve celebrated our “diversity” so much that we forgot all the ways we’re really the same as Americans, bound by ideals that united a divided, headstrong group of people 250 years ago. I believe deep in my bones those ideals still exist. I’m running for President to revive them,” tweeted Ramaswamy in a video announcing his intention to run for president. (ANI)

Terrorists Kill Kashmiri Pandit Guard In Pulwama

Terrorists Kill Kashmiri Pandit Guard In Pulwama

A Kashmiri Pandit working as a security guard at a bank was shot dead by terrorists in Achan area of Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Sunday morning, a police officer said.

The deceased was identified as Sanjay Sharma, son of Kashinath Sharma, and was a bank security guard by profession, the officer added.

Security has been tightened and the entire area has been cordoned off to arrest the attackers.

The Kashmir police said that the terrorists opened fire on Sanjay Sharma, a member of Kashmiri Pandit community, while he was on his way to a local market in Achan.

The injured person was rushed to a nearby hospital, with the help of locals, for treatment, where he succumbed to bullet injuries.

There was an armed guard in his village, and further details of the incident are awaited, Kashmir police said.

Earlier four days ago, terrorists opened fire and injured a man, Asif Ganai, outside a mosque in the Anantnag district. The injured survived the injuries.

Jammu and Kashmir police had recently arrested three militant associates of the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen group in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district, a week ago.

Kashmir police had said that the operation was commenced after receiving a tip-off on militants carrying illegal arms and ammunition. Following the input, the Kulgam police team launched a hunt near Daderkoot Alamganj to arrest them.

The police confiscated a pistol, two pistol magazines, and 13 live pistol rounds from the possession of the accused. The police said that all the accused were detained and the investigation revealed that they indulged in terror crimes and even provided support to terrorist organisations. (ANI)

Nagaland Goes To Poll On Monday: Here Are Keys Issues

Nagaland Goes To Poll On Monday: Here Are Keys Issues

As Nagaland goes to Assembly polls on Monday, there are various issues which have been in the spotlight for years, including the demand for a separate state.

The election campaign for the Assembly polls ended on February 25. The polling will begin at 7 am on Monday and will go on till 4 pm amid tight security. Several issues pertain to the state that might affect the voting on Monday.

The Janajati Dharma-Sanksriti Suraksha Mancha’s (JDSSM) Assam chapter have put forward a demand to delist from the Scheduled Tribes those who have converted to other faiths, making it an election issue in poll-bound Meghalaya and Nagaland.

Notably, both states go to Assembly elections on the same day.

The ruling BJP and its ally NDPP have been accused of maintaining silence on the issue, while the BJP opposed the demand.

Earlier, the Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation (ENPO) had called for the boycott of the polls until its demands are met by the Centre. The ENPO had demanded a separate state — ‘Frontier Nagaland’ comprising six districts of eastern Nagaland — Tuensang, Mon, Shamator, Kiphire, Noklak and Longleng.

The demand had raised concerns over the uninterrupted and smooth conduct of Assembly polls in nearly 20 constituencies.

However, following an assurance by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on February 2 that an agreement will be signed with the ENPO after the elections, the Naga tribal organisation withdrew its call for a poll boycott.

A forum of MLAs representing the 20 constituencies, named Eastern Nagaland Legislators Union, had rejected the boycott call by the ENPO and announced that they will contest the elections.

The National Socialist Council of Nagaland(IM) and the Naga National Political Groups (NNPG), which is a large firm of seven rebel groups, on January 14 jointly declared their commitment to resolve the rights of the Nagas based on the agreements signed with the central government.

Notably, there was a ‘Framework of Agreement’ signed between NSCN(IM) and the Centre in 2015 to resolve the “Naga political issue”. While in 2017, Naga National Political Groups had signed an ‘Agreed Position’ with the government, the Centre had said that it would sign a single peace accord with all the rebel groups.

During the election campaign, Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge charged Prime Minister Narendra Modi with “cheating” the people of Nagaland, claiming that the government failed to resolve the Naga political issue and also questioned its omission from the party’s election manifesto.

In March 2022, Amit Shah announced to remove Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from several districts of Assam, Manipur and Nagaland.

In October last year, the Centre decided to extend AFSPA in parts of Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland for another six months.

“Nine districts and 16 police stations in four districts of Nagaland were being declared as ‘disturbed areas’ after a review of the law and order situation in the state,” the Home Ministry had said in a notification.

Notably, AFSPA has been in force in the whole of Nagaland since 1995.

Corruption has emerged to be another big issue in Nagaland ahead of the state polls.

While the Nagaland Congress vowed to end corruption if voted to power, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his election campaign, accused the Congress of using the Northeast as its ATM, neglecting the development of the region.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi attacked the previous Congress governments saying that they considered all states in the Northeast as ATMs, adding that the entire region is now “punishing” the grand old party for its “sins”.

“I can sense huge support for the BJP and NDPP. I see so support for the BJP-NDPP government in Nagaland. This is because we are working tirelessly to bring development to the Northeast. The Congress and its partners have been following the policy of taking votes, while not doing anything for the welfare of the people. Congress leaders in Delhi have a habit of not looking at Nagaland. Congress and its allies never gave importance to stability and prosperity of the state. There was always political instability during the Congress rule,” PM Modi said while addressing a poll rally here.

“Congress always ruled the Nagaland government through remote control from Delhi. From Delhi to Dimapur, Congress indulged in dynasty politics. The entire northeast along with Nagaland is punishing Congress for its sins,” he added.

The voting for the Assembly elections in Nagaland will take place on Monday, and the counting of votes will be held on March 2 along with those of Tripura and Meghalaya. (ANI)

Lynchings and Demolitions Become a “Model” in India

Lynchings and Demolitions Become a “Model” in India

Lynchings and Demolitions a “Model”

One use of the word, “model”, is to describe a thing or a practice that can be followed or imitated by others and although the literal definition of that meaning doesn’t incorporate it, the word “model” is usually associated with positive attributes. Hence, the phrases, “role model” or a “model for development” and other similar ones. But last week when members of the Hindu mahapanchayat in Haryana’s Manesar town clamoured for the state to follow the “Uttar Pradesh model” it was a most sinister practice that they wanted the authorities to emulate: demolition by bulldozers of unauthorised and illegal settlements.

On the face of it, the demolitions, aimed at illegal encroachment of public spaces and state owned land may have a legitimate objective but last year when a spate of such demolitions happened in several states, but mainly in Uttar Pradesh, there were allegations that the practice was abused and demolitions were aimed at settlements that had mainly Muslim residents or small businesses run by that community. In fact, bulldozing demolitions has become a sort of retributive action.

Last week’s mahapanchayat meeting, attended by hundred of villagers from in and around Manesar, was held to show solidarity for an individual named Mohit Yadav, aka Monu Manesar, whose dubious claim to fame includes several criminal charges, including being accused in a very recent case where two Muslim men were burnt to death in a car, presumably by right-wing cow vigilante groups who have in recent years become very active in lynching anyone who is suspected of cow slaughter or transportation of cows for slaughter. The strictest laws are in Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand, where the slaughter of cows and their progeny, including bulls and bullocks of all ages, is completely banned.

However, the law is interpreted quite loosely by so-called cow vigilante groups who are believed to widely use mere suspicion as a compelling reason to unleash their vengeance against Muslims. Since 2014 when the Bharatiya Janata Party came to power at the Centre, the number of lynchings in the name of “cow protection” has soared.

Mahapanchayats, which are usually run by khaps or community organisations representing a clan or a group of North Indian castes or clans, are gatherings that cover 10-12 villages. Khaps, which advocate and often order honour killings (for marrying or eloping couples that are from different castes) and also decide on property rights, as well as other matters, have no legal status and are, indeed, banned by the courts in India. Yet, in rural parts of northern India, primarily in Haryana where the khaps are most belligerent, they still thrive.

Last week, in Manesar, the khap-fuelled Mahapanchayat came out in support of a criminal with murder charges and protested against the police action against him. The police that came to Monu Manesar’s village were from Rajasthan because the murders of the two Muslim men had taken place there across the border from Haryana. The Mahapanchayat tried to block the policemen from entering the village and even briefly blockaded the highway connecting Delhi and Jaipur.

The bodies of the two men who were believed to have been killed in Rajasthan were found in the charred vehicle across the border in Haryana’s Bhiwani district. Manesar is believed to have led the group that perpetrated the crime. He remains unapprehended. Manesar is a sort of a hero among local right-wing Hindu militants. A member of the Bajrang Dal, a militant youth wing of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, he also has a YouTube channel (with more than 200,000 subscribers) where instances of cow vigilantism are posted.

The disturbing thing is that the Mahapanchayat while protesting against the police action against Manesar has also supported vigilantism against “cow slaughter” and called for Haryana to adopt the “Uttar Pradesh model”, ostensibly to target Muslims. This is yet another distressing trend in the growing wave of discrimination and persecution of minorities in today’s India.

Shiv Sena: End of the Thackeray era?

In 1966, the late Bal Thackeray, a former professional cartoonist, founded the Shiv Sena party, which began as a pro-Marathi nativist movement in Maharashtra. The party wanted Marathi people in the state to be preferentially treated vis-a-vis migrants from other parts of India and agitated for that cause. Over the years, however, the party has changed its ideology sharply, moving from regionalism to ultranationalism and then swinging towards secularism. In fact, last year when former Maharashtra chief minister and Bal Thackeray’s son, Uddhav Thackeray, forged an alliance with the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party, the hardliners in the party, led by Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde,  forced a split in the party.

After a legal battle between the two divisions, last week witnessed the Shinde faction taking charge of the party and getting the court-approved right to use the party’s traditional bow and arrow symbol as well as the name, Shiv Sena.

This comes as a blow to Thackeray and his faction. He has appealed the Supreme Court order in the matter but for the moment, the Thackeray has come to an end in Shiv Sena.

Could Biden’s visit to Ukraine aggravate the Russian offensive?

US president Joe Biden paid a surprise visit to Ukraine last week to show solidarity towards the nation as well as to its beleaguered president Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Biden’s visit marked one year since Russia attacked Ukraine and the beginning of the ongoing war. After his visit, Biden was quoted as saying: “I’ve just come from a visit to Kyiv, and I can report: Kyiv stands strong, Kyiv stands proud, it stands tall and, most importantly, it stands free.”

Biden said Russia would never win the war and that the US and its allies would consider fresh sanctions against the country if it did not relent in its offensive against Ukraine.

Meanwhile, in his state of the union address last week, the Russian president Vladimir Putin blamed the West and Ukraine for starting the war, a view that he has espoused ever since Russia began its attack. He also announced that Russia was suspending its participation in the strategic offensive arms treaty (START). The new START was signed in Prague in 2010 and it limits the number of strategic nuclear warheads that the US and Russia can deploy, and the number of land and submarine-based missiles and bombers they can use to deliver them. Russia has the highest stockpile of nuclear weapons in the world with an estimated 6,000 warheads. Russia and the US together have more than 90% of the world’s nuclear warheads, enough to destroy the world many times.

In recent weeks, Russian attacks against Ukraine have intensified and there is, at least for the moment, no sign of an end in the conflict.

Adani stocks continue to plunge after Hindenburg report

The bloodbath in Adani group’s stocks continues well after short-seller and activist firm Hindenburg Research accused the group of financial irregularities and price manipulation. When the report was released in January, Adani was ranked as the third richest billionaire in the world. As a result of the crash of his group’s stocks, he is now down at the 33rd spot, according to the Forbes’ Real Time Billionaires list. According to Economic Times, with stocks falling up to 84% from their 52-week high levels, the total market capitalization of all 10 Adani stocks has reduced by 62% to Rs 7.32 lakh crore in a month.

The meltdown in Adani stocks has also spread to affect the market sentiment on the Indian bourses. The Nifty last week was down by more than 3% compared to a month ago and one of India’s biggest insurance companies, LIC, which is a large investor in Adani group companies, could make a notional loss of around Rs 30,000 crore on account of its investments in the conglomerate’s stocks.

Microsoft’s Bing gets shirty in trial runs

Microsoft, which is getting ready to launch its AI-based chat, the enhanced Bing, could have a bot with an attitude on its hand. The IT giant has been rolling out the AI chatbot to select users for a few weeks now and it is getting some interesting feedback. One phenomenon is especially noteworthy. If asked many questions, the chatbot is reported to get a bit unhinged and irritable. On some occasions, it has threatened users and even compared them to Adolf Hitler.

As a consequence, Microsoft is believed to be modifying the bot, including limiting the number of questions that can be asked of it.

‘Centre Must Step In…’ Amarinder On Punjab Law & Order Situation

‘Centre Must Step In…’ Amarinder On Punjab Law & Order Situation

With reference to the Ajnala incident, former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Sunday said if the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government cannot handle law and order, the Centre should intervene to deal with the situation.

Speaking to ANI on Sunday, the former Punjab CM said, “He (CM Bhagwant Mann) is not interested on what is going on in Punjab. He is afraid of taking any step. Police officials may have got orders not to take any step during the Ajnala incident. The law and order has deteriorated in Punjab.”

“No government can run like this, the way this government is running. The day when Ajnala incident took place, Bhagwant Mann was sitting in Mumbai with Arvind Kejriwal,” he added.

Notably, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday called on former Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray at his Mumbai residence.

Captain Amarinder Singh further raised concerns about the internal security of the country.

“The law and order situation in Punjab is horrible. The law and order is not the Centre’s subject. If they (Punjab government) are not able to handle it then the central government will have to take charge. There are drones getting caught every single day, I think the Centre must see it,” he said.

Thousands of supporters of Amritpal Singh, a Khalistan sympathizer, had on Thursday staged a massive demonstration in Amritsar to protest against the arrest of his aide Lovepreet Singh Toofan.

The supporters, who were holding swords and guns in their hands, broke through police barricades erected outside Ajnala police station.

The police later said “in the light of the evidence presented”, it has been decided that Lovepreet Singh Toofan will be discharged.

Lovepreet Singh was released from jail on Friday following orders of a court in Ajnala on an application by the police.

A day after Ajnala incident in which some policemen were injured, DGP Gaurav Yadav said that appropriate action will be taken against the people involved.

After the clash between supporters of the chief of suspected pro-Khalistan outfit ‘Waris Punjab De’, Amritpal Singh, and Punjab Police erupted in Ajnala, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday said the law and order situation is under control.

‘Waris Punjab De’ chief Amritpal Singh said the incident concerning Ajnala police station in Amritsar on February 23 could have been avoided if police were alert and his aide Lovepreet Singh Toofan had not been arrested.

Amritpal Singh said in an interview with ANI that the incident and subsequent release of Lovepreet Singh will “change the course of the future”.

Amritpal’s supporters, some of them brandishing swords and other weapons, stormed Ajnala police station on Thursday over their demand for the release of Lovepreet Singh.

Asked about Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav’s remarks that there will be action regarding the Ajnala incident, Amritpal Singh said that the senior police official cannot say he was not aware of the case.

“We are going through the cycle…They way it happened before, it could have been avoided if they were alert. The DGP could not say that he did not know about the case. It was not that he did not know about the case. The decision could have been made earlier. The guy should not have been arrested. We will not run away and hide somewhere. It’s not that I am going to hide somewhere. No, I will not. I will get killed. I will face everything, I will not hide anywhere,” he said.

Amritpal Singh said Punjab Police acted in a hurry based on wrong intelligence reports and authorities gave false information about him that he does not have support.

“When I am going to the public, this could happen any day if you have enough evidence to charge me. What they did was in hurry and based on wrong intelligence reports. I do not show everything on social media. They had some pressure and gave false information to the Central government that Amritpal Singh does not have any support in Punjab and he is isolated,” he said.

Invoking ‘Operation Blue Star’, Amritpal said it was a moment of “trauma” for Sikhs and continues to be.

“When Golden temple was attacked and Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale was killed, it might have been a happy moment for many people, but it was a trauma for Sikhs. It is still a trauma. You don’t care about the judgment of law and society because you are the society. Not a single Hindu was attacked in Punjab…….When (former Prime Minister) Indira Gandhi was killed, Sikhs…were attacked,” he said.

Amritpal , a suspected Khalistan sympathiser, said allegations were made against Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, and huge money was spent “to destroy his image”.

“When someone is in the power, they have the power to make anything evil. Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale is evil in the eyes of the Indian people, and Indira Gandhi might be a hero. But that does not change our idea of us. We will love him. India has control over all the resources to make him evil and it did it. Billions of dollars were spent to destroy his image and to put allegations against him. But what happened? There is no village here that will not have his pictures. Youth is inspired, they did not see him. But what happens? The suppression finds its way come out of slavery,” Amritpal said.

The head of the Sikh religious sect Damdami Taksal, Bhindranwale, was killed along with his armed followers during Operation Blue Star launched by the Indian Army at the Golden Temple complex.

Amritpal also said steps should be taken to make policing system better.

“The Indian people should reconsider the policing system in the country. It is still pre-1947. The way they interrogate people, the way they pick them up, the way they work. Courts are filled with such cases because the policing system is not right. It’s not the problem of the police, but of the law. They have to change the law to make policing system better and make things more transparent,” he said.

‘Waris Punjab De’ was founded by activist Deep Sidhu, who died in a road accident in February last year. (ANI)

Inflation Breaches 40% Barrier In Pakistan

Consumer prices rose significantly in the outgoing week on the back of onions, chicken, eggs, rice, cigarettes and fuel, official data showed on Friday, driving the weekly inflation to over 40 per cent for the first time in over five months, the Dawn reported.

Though week-on-week inflation eased slightly, it still remained high as bananas, chicken, sugar, cooking oil, gas and cigarettes became costlier, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported.

As a result, short-term inflation, measured by Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI), jumped to 41.54 per cent on a year-on-year basis for the week ended on Feb 23, rising from 38.42 per cent in the previous week.

The hike in prices is the highest annual rise since the week ending September 8, 2022, when the SPI inflation was 42.7 per cent. And it was above 40 per cent for the first time since Sept 15, when the reading was 40.58 per cent.

As per the Dawn news, officials say the lender is still negotiating with Islamabad over power sector debt and a potential rise in the policy rate, which currently stands at 17 per cent.

The country’s economy has been in turmoil and desperately needs external financing, with its foreign exchange reserves dipping to around USD 3 billion, barely enough for three weeks’ worth of imports.

German CEOs Meet Modi, Double Down on India Growth Story

German-based companies’ CEOs doubled down on the Indian growth story after meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of German companies had a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday and discussed new opportunities for the German Companies to expand education and business opportunities in India.

German CEOs eulogise the meeting with Prime Minister Modi. Chairman of the Management Board of TUV NORD, Dirk Stenkamp on Saturday said that India is at forefront of leading nations with increased self-confidence and is at the point where it can take off.

While talking with ANI, Stenkamp said, “The meeting with the Prime Minister was very impressive, I think India is at the forefront of leading nations and there has been an increase in self-confidence in the last two years. “I think India is at the point where it really starts to take off.”

Speaking on the ‘Make in India’ initiative he said, “I know about Make in India since the beginning and we’re supporting many German companies to come to India and start producing in India. Currently, there’s an initiative going on in German Mittelstand invited by India to come and become part of Make in India”.

Currently, an initiative is going on in German small and medium-sized enterprises where they are asked to come to India and become part of the make-in-India initiative, he informed.

Regarding growth and expansion, he said that the opportunities in India are tremendous.

“We are very active in energy transition, which means turning fossils to watts, wind and so on,” he added.

Other than Stenkamp, there was three more companies delegation that participated in the meeting with PM Modi.

One of them was Klemens Rethmann, CEO of the German-based Rethmann company, who stated that India has skill and talent and it’s a “privilege to use those resources,” and added that “India will become bigger in the production world.”

“You’ve got the workforce here. So, Germany is lacking in the workforce. You’ve got such wealth and skilled work and so many intelligent young people who wanted to do something. This is a privilege to use those resources. And therefore, PM Modi asked us to produce in India but for us, it’s not only because he asked us because this is where the resources are and we see our chances,” Rethmann told ANI.

Meanwhile, CEO of Renk, Susanne Weigand stated that they are proud to be here, a trusted partner of the Indian government. The company are supplying the Indian armed forces and Navy with drive solutions. We also actively supply the Indian energy market with our high-speed gears.

“India is also a booming fast growing cement market,” she added.

“We are based in Bengaluru with our team and we are expanding a lot, we honour the ‘Make in India’ initiative which is important for us also as India is a high-speed going market, a key market in Asia,” The CEO of Renk said while appreciating the ‘Make in India’ initiative of the Modi Government.

Not only Weigand, but CEO of the Software company SAP, Christian Klein also participated in the meeting with PM Modi. After the meeting, he said that India has high aspirations for sustainability and wanted to use technology to decarbonize supply chains and produce green hydrogen which goes hand in hand with technology.

He also said that he is happy to be a partner of India.

While talking to ANI, Klein said, “The country (India) has high aspirations for sustainability and wants to use technology to achieve that, to decarbonize supply chains, to move to the circular economy, to produce green hydrogen. And that goes hand in hand with technology. And India has a very strong agenda for both topics.”

All CEOs are a part of the delegation visiting India along with the German chancellor Olaf Scholz. Olaf Scholz is on a two-day visit to India from February 25-26. (ANI)
