INS Sumedha sudan

Two C-130J, INS Sumedha To Evacuate Citizens From Sudan

Two Indian Air Force C-130J have been positioned in Saudi Arabia’s Jeddah and INS Sumedha has reached Port Sudan, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in an official statement on Sunday while giving details of preparations to evacuate Indians from Sudan. The MEA said that contingency plans are in place, but movement on the ground depends on the security situation.

“As part of our preparations, and in order to move swiftly, the Government of India is pursuing multiple options. Two Indian Air Force C-130J are currently positioned on standby in Jeddah. And, INS Sumedha has reached Port Sudan,” the MEA said in the statement.
It further said, “Contingency plans are in place but any movement on the ground would depend on the security situation, which continues to be volatile with reports of fierce fighting at various locations in Khartoum. Sudanese airspace currently remains closed for all foreign aircraft. Overland movement also has risks and logistical challenges.”

India is closely monitoring the security situation and making all-out efforts to ensure the safety and security of Indians stranded in Sudan, the MEA said in the statement. The MEA said that the Indian Embassy in Sudan is in regular touch with stranded Indians in Sudan. It advised people on the viability of safe movement and the need to avoid unnecessary risk.

In addition to Sudanese authorities, the MEA and the Embassy in Sudan are in regular touch with the United Nations, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Egypt and the US among others.

The MEA in the statement said, “Government of India is making all-out efforts to ensure safety and security of Indians stranded in Sudan. We are closely monitoring the complex and evolving security situation in Sudan. We are also coordinating closely with various partners for the safe movement of those Indians who are stranded in Sudan and would like to be evacuated.”

The MEA stated that Indian Embassy in Sudan is coordinating all possible assistance, including possible exit from Khartoum city according to the security situation in Sudan.

“Our Embassy is in regular touch with the stranded Indians in Sudan and is advising them on the viability of safe movement and the need to avoid unnecessary risk. It is also coordinating all possible assistance including possible exit from Khartoum city as and when the security situation permits safe movement,” the MEA said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Indian nationals are among 66 people from “friendly and brotherly countries” evacuated by Saudi Arabia from violence-torn Sudan. The evacuation came days after External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar spoke to his Saudi Arabia counterpart. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday chaired a high-level meeting to review the security situation in Sudan.

Saudi Arabia ministry, in a statement, announced the “safe arrival” of 91 Saudi citizens and around 66 nationals representing the following nationalities Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Tunisia, Pakistan, India, Bulgaria, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Canada, and Burkina. Faso.

Sudan is facing violence due to fighting between the army and the paramilitary forces. Fighting between two rival military factions – the Sudanese Armed Forces and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continues in Sudan despite a 72-hour truce declared for Eid, CNN reported. On Saturday, Loud explosions and clashes were reported, mainly near the military headquarters and presidential palace in Khartoum. (ANI)

Amritpal in dibrugarh jail

Amritpal Kept In Dibrugarh Jail’s Isolation Cell

Central intelligence agencies will interrogate ‘Waris Punjab De’ chief Amritpal Singh, who was arrested by the Punjab Police on Sunday and later sent to Assam’s Dibrugarh jail.

The self-styled preacher was evading Punjab Police since March 18. Nine of Amritpal’s aides who were arrested earlier were also lodged in Dibrugarh jail.
“Amritpal has been kept in a separate cell, distant from his accomplices who are also in same jail after they were arrested during Punjab Police crackdown,” a senior official told ANI.

The official added that a team of Intelligence Bureau (IB), Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) and other Central Intelligence agencies would reach Dibrugarh jail to question Amritpal.

“He will be questioned on his association with his sympathisers and his source of funding. Because intelligence agencies have got a lot of inputs regarding his association with handlers in Pakistan and other countries,” the official said.

“We have asked Assam Police to beef up security around jail premises and visitors to the jail to be thoroughly frisked and their details to be kept in record. Apart from state police, Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) is also deployed in the periphery of jail premises,” he added.

A special chartered flight from Bathinda Airport accompanied by a team of Punjab police took off at 8.25 am and reached the Dibrugarh Airport at 2.20 pm. They were received by senior Assam Police officers at the airport and he was immediately taken to Dibrugarh Jail where he was kept in a cell after a medical examination.

Earlier on Sunday, Amritpal was arrested from a Gurudwara in the Moga district of Punjab and reportedly also addressed a gathering before his arrest.

According to the officials, the arrest was done by combined efforts of the Punjab Police and Central intelligence agencies. (ANI)

Jobless India Most Populous Time Bomb

Jobless India Could Become World’s Most Populous Time Bomb

Jobless India could be world most populous time bomb

This month, India is believed to have surpassed China as the country with the world’s largest population. For the first time in centuries, China will not be the world’s most populous country. According to data based on statistical projections released by the United Nations, India’s population by mid-year will reach 1.4286 billion, compared to China’s 1.4257 billion – 2.9 million less.

According to the projections, India’s population is rising while China’s is declining. India’s population is set to rise to 1.515 billion in 2030. By contrast, China’s population, is expected to fall slightly to 1.416 billion over the same period.

Is India’s burgeoning population a blessing or a bane? The good news is that India’s population is relatively young: 1.1 billion Indians are in the working age band of 15-64. When more than half the population is of working age, a country is said to enjoy the advantage of what is known as a “demographic dividend”, which can be a huge potential for the economy. In comparison, China’s population is rapidly ageing. In 2022, China’s population declined for the first time in six decades. Compared to 35% of Indians being less than 20 years old, only 23% of China’s population is in that bracket.

The not-so-good news is that to get the most out of its huge potential workforce, India has to create jobs for its youth and that is not really happening. Despite trying to change economic policies, liberalise regulations, and incentivise manufacturing and other economic activities, India has not been able to attract the order of foreign investment that it needs to boost employment opportunities for its burgeoning population of job-ready youth.

Officially, India’s joblessness at 6.1% in 2017-18 was at a 45-year high but government data says that the levels may have improved in 2021-22 by falling to 4.1%. However, may believe that that the official figures could be underestimations. The Centre for Monitoring the Indian Economy (CMIE) pegged India’s overall unemployment rate in March this year at 7.8% (and an even higher 8.5% in urban India where, in general, wages and productivity are higher).

According to another estimate, nearly five million people enter the workforce every year but, the government’s own production-linked incentive schemes for selected sectors is projected to create only six million jobs in five years.

This year ending March, the GDP growth has been forecast at 6.8%, which makes India the fastest growing big economy but that might not be enough. Investment growth in India has nearly halved from an annual average of 10.5% between 2000 and 2010 to 5.7% in 2011-2012. Unless investment grows and, according to some analysts, GDP grows at 8 to 8.5% annually for the next decade, India’s growth could be a “jobless” one. And that would be a true disaster: the demographic dividend would turn into a ticking time bomb.

Meanwhile, China responds…

The global attention that India’s population surge has received has irked China. Not because India’s population has surpassed China’s but because the China’s regime thinks that interpretations of the development, particularly by the western media, have been biased and anti-China. Western media’s observation that China’s population was declining and ageing faster is what has caused Chinese resentment.

In strongly worded statements, China’s government controlled broadcaster CCTV said last week that the subtext from Western media in recent years was that China’s development was in “big trouble” and that when the country’s demographic dividend disappears, it will decline and the global economy will also suffer. China, CCTV said, has created a “miracle of sustainable and stable economic development with a huge population”.

The statement went on to say that the US was increasing its efforts to contain China’s development and the Western view was to simply equate population size with development milestones. CCTV said this showed a lack of basic understanding of how population development works. Decreases in birth rate, it said, are a natural consequence of development and is something that the developed world faces everywhere. Countering reports focusing on China’s declining population and ageing demography, Chinese officials said it wasn’t only quantity buy quality that mattered for a country’s population and that the government has been taking appropriate measures in response to its ageing population.

Ex-governor of J&K makes explosive revelations

In February 2019, in Pulwama, 25 km south of Srinagar in Kashmir, a convoy of vehicles carrying Indian security personnel was attacked by a vehicle driven by a suicide bomber. The attack killed 40 Indian Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel. The Pakistan-based Islamist terrorist group, Jaish-e-Mohammed, claimed responsibility for the attack, one of the most deadliest in recent years. Now, a former governor of Jammu & Kashmir, Satyapal Malik, has revealed in an interview that the attack may have been possible because of serious security lapses on the part of Indian authorities.

Malik, in his interview with journalist Karan Thapar, said that the CRPF had asked for four aircraft for safe travel but the Centre had refused it. The Pulwama attack could have been prevented had the Centre agreed to the CRPF request. More important, Malik claimed that when he told Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the lapse in security, Modi had reportedly told him to stay quiet about the matter. Coming four years after the Pulwama incident, Malik’s claims have added heft to Modi’s critics and rivals but BJP leaders have dubbed him a rabble rouser.

Public shooting of gangsters brings focus on UP gun violence

Last week when Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf, both notorious gangsters, who had been in police custody in Uttar Pradesh for a string of crimes, including murders, were being transported by police escorts ostensibly for medical check-ups, three people masquerading as journalists fired guns and killed both of them. The incident was caught on video and live TV. The killers who shouted the Hindu slogan of “Jai Shri Ram”  after shooting the duo, were quickly overpowered and arrested.

Media reports, based on official briefings, variously described the shooters as criminals, drug addicts, and so on. Yet, the incident refocuses attention on rising instances of gun violence in Uttar Pradesh. Earlier this year, the Supreme Court expressed its distress at a large number of cases concerning the possession and use of illegal guns in Uttar Pradesh. The right to bear arms is not a fundamental right in the Indian Constitution.

Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state accounts for the largest number of guns. In 2016, the number of licensed guns, according to the small arms survey, in UP was the highest among all states at nearly 1.3 million compared to the total number of licensed guns in India that then stood at 61 million. More recent estimates suggest that Uttar Pradesh could account for half of the country’s illegal weapon seizures. According to data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) for 2020, as many as 67,947 firearms were seized under the Arms Act in the country in 2020, with UP topping the list (32,776 seizures).

Many believe that these figures may be just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to possession of unlicensed guns in the state and the ease of acquiring them. Public shootings in Uttar Pradesh have become frequent and this should be cause of serious concern for UP’s government.

Apple opens stores in India but the brand isn’t a draw

Apple, the company that Steve Jobs built, and the one that revolutionised how we compute, communicate and entertain ourselves using technology, opened two stores this month in India—in Mumbai and Delhi. Apple’s CEO Tim Cook visited India on the occasion and did all the requisite photo-op worthy things: ate paani puri with diva Madhuri Dixit: met the Prime Minister and other officials: and talked about investing more in India: Apple wants to expand manufacturing in India. The flip side is that Apple isn’t really a big draw in India. The market share of iPhones is just 5.5% of the total cell phone market in India (an estimated 1.2 billion phone users of which 600 million use smartphones). Apple products are costly. The cheapest iPhone is still way out of reach for the average Indian consumer and 95% of cell-phone users opt for cheaper Android-based devices.

After meeting Congress Rahul Gandhi, Shettar said, “First meeting with Rahul Gandhi and we discussed so many issues…”

Arshdeep wickets breaks

Wasn’t Just Bowling, He Was Breaking Wickets: Parthiv On Arshdeep

Punjab Kings held their nerves to ward off a spirited challenge from the Mumbai Indians to win match no. 31 of the IPL 2023 by 13 runs at the Wankhede Stadium on Saturday.

Chasing a stiff 215 for victory, MI were restricted to 201/6 at the end of their 20 overs, thanks largely to a brilliant performance by paceman Arshdeep Singh in the last over, where he gave away only two runs and also claimed a couple of wickets. Arshdeep emerged as the best of the PBKS bowlers returning with figures of 4-0-29-4.
PBKS now have eight points from seven games and lie fifth in the points table, while MI are in seventh place with six points after three wins and an equal number of defeats.

Former India cricketer Parthiv Patel was left extremely pleased with Arshdeep’s performance, saying on JioCinema: “Executing at the end is very important. He started off well, picking up Ishan Kishan’s wicket early off a catch. The game changed when he got Suryakumar Yadav out. He wasn’t just bowling at the wickets, he was breaking them. His yorkers were plentiful and they were also accurate. We saw two stumps break and all the spare stumps at the Wankhede were brought to the game. Arshdeep won them the match because they were giving away a lot of runs at that time. So, to bowl under pressure and see the yorkers we saw, he’s backing his skills and doing it really well.”

Former India Test captain Anil Kumble discussed the spell-binding 20th over on JioCinema. “He’s done that for Punjab before. He’s taken that role over the last few years, he was incredible in terms of coming in and bowling the tough overs. Today, it was tougher because they had to defend 15 runs and Tim David, who’s known to hit massive sixes, was on strike. But good for him and Punjab that he could have Tim David on the non-striker’s end for most of those balls. A fantastic effort to finish things off. It’s not easy to consistently nail those Yorkers and Tilak Varma is in the form of his life. To get him out, I know he was batting on just his fourth or fifth ball, but with a yorker, getting him out was fantastic.”

Kumble also praised Sam Curran for his terrific 55 in Punjab Kings’ innings. “In those last five overs is where I think Mumbai lost the game. Today, they gave away 96 and it’s thanks to Sam Curran, who certainly took the game away from Mumbai and that was the difference, those 15 runs at the end was the difference.” (ANI)

World War II ship

World War II Ship Found After 80 Years

A Japanese transport ship that sank during World War II with over 1,000 people on board has finally been found, reported Voice of America.

The wreck of Montevideo Maru, the Japanese ship, was carrying 850 prisoners of war and about 200 civilians, who were captured by the Japanese in Papua New Guinea in 1942. Not knowing, who was there on the ship, the ship was torpedoed by the USS Sturgeon, an American submarine.
Its sinking was initially heralded as a success by Allied forces before the identity of most of those onboard was finally revealed.

The wreck was found earlier this week in the South China Sea off the Philippines. The mission was a combined effort of the Australian Defense Department, marine archaeologists from Australia’s Silentworld Foundation, and experts from the Dutch deep-sea survey company Fugro.

The search operation started earlier this month off the coast of the Philippines. Within two weeks, the positive sighting of the Montevideo Maru was made before the identity of the vessel was officially verified. It was the culmination of years of research and preparation by the search team.

According to VoA, almost 1,000 Australians died in the disaster.

The wreck was discovered on a mission put together by the Silentworld Foundation, which is dedicated to maritime archaeology and history and Fugro with support from Australia’s Department of Defense.

The tragedy affected more than a dozen countries. There were victims from Denmark, New Zealand and the United States as well as Japan.

No items or human remains will be removed from the Montevideo Maru, reported VoA.

Reacting to the new discovery, Richard Marles Deputy Prime Minister of Australia, tweeted, “For more than 80 years, hundreds of Australian families have waited for news of the Montevideo Maru. This week, thanks to an extraordinary search effort, the ship’s final resting place has been discovered.”

“The 850 Australian service members on board were never forgotten. We will remember them,” he added. (ANI)

Piyush Chawla (2/15 in three overs) was the pick of the bowlers for MI. Cameron Green also took 2/41 in his four overs. Jofra Archer, Jason Behrendorff and Arjun Tendulkar got one scalp each.

Chasing 215, MI lost Ishan Kishan early, but a 76-run stand for the second wicket between skipper Rohit Sharma (44 off 27 balls with four boundaries and three sixes) and Green brought MI back into the game. Green, who scored 67 off 43 balls with six fours and three sixes also stitched a 75-run stand with Suryakumar Yadav (57 off 26 balls, seven fours and three sixes) for the third wicket.
