Chinese Growing Influence

China’s Influence Reaches Caribbean, Unsettles US: Report

Amidst the tension between US and China, Beijing’s influence has reached the Caribbean as the 10 nations of the region have participated in the “Belt and Road” initiative, which is a big issue for Washington DC, The New York Post reported.

10 Caribbean nations– Grenada, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Suriname and Cuba– have participated in the Belt and Road initiative.

According to The New York Post, most of the borrower nations choose China over the US as the former offers a cheap, no-questions-asked alternative, while America prides itself on upholding a “rules-based international order” which is burdensome for the developing states.

Chinese development banks offered a less time-consuming process than Western-dominated multilateral lending institutions, demanded less transparency and disclosure, and were often willing to supply credit at below-market interest rates,” explains Scott B. MacDonald in a recent report for the Jamestown Foundation.

And the nations that don’t sell their sovereignty willingly nonetheless face “the possibility China could use leverage gained through lending or ‘debt-trap diplomacy’ as a means for Beijing to gain control over strategic assets like harbours and railways.”

Moreover, China uses its economic pull to maximum political effect, as per The New York Post.

Honduras, another Caribbean nation, has become part of the Belt and Road which stands to gain greater investment in hydroelectric power, among other perks.

Chinese influence throughout Latin America is growing, but the Caribbean has special significance.

Five of the remaining 12 United Nations member states that recognize Taipei as a national capital are Caribbean — Haiti, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Belize.

Even if China can’t lure them all into Belt and Road, these countries increasingly have to think about Beijing as they navigate relationships with their own neighbours. China’s strategic interests are now locally embedded.

Where superpowers are concerned, globalization is never just an economic phenomenon. It’s political — and military — too.

Diplomatically isolating Taiwan is one of China’s aims in the Caribbean, reported The New York Post. (ANI)

Owaisi Slams Modi Over ‘No Discrimination To Minorities’ Remarks

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his recent on religious minorities in the country during his maiden State visit to the United States.

To a specific question during a joint press briefing alongside US President Joe Biden, PM Modi denied discrimination against religious minorities in India.

However, Owasi, on Saturday, countered PM Modi’s claim saying there were several instances of discrimination against minorities, including the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which was passed by the Centre.

“The Prime Minister of India took questions for the first time in 9 years and to a specific question, he claimed there was no discrimination against religious minorities in India. As many as 300 churches were burnt in Manipur. Isn’t that discrimination? The CAA was formulated on the basis of discrimination. The BJP has 300 ministers of which there is not a single Muslim. You (BJP) ended the Maulana Azad fellowship. These are examples of discrimination. There is discrimination,” Owaisi told reporters here.

Also invoking former US President Barack Obama’s interview with CNN during PM Modi’s first State to the US, the AIMIM chief said, “When our PM was in the US, former President Barack Obama, in an interview, said the targeting of religious minorities in India was not in the interest of a country, which has been practising democracy for so long. What does this imply?”

Taking a further jibe at PM Modi, Owaisi said, “PM Modi makes tall claims at press conferences abroad but backtracks on them back home in India?”

To a question on measures his government is willing to take to improve the rights of minorities in the country, PM Modi said, “Democracy is India’s spirit, it runs in the veins of its people and they live democracy in their daily lives”.

“We are a democracy and as President Biden said India and America both have democracy in our DNA. Democracy is in our spirit and we live it and it’s written in our Constitution…So no question of discrimination on the grounds of caste, creed or religion arises,” PM Modi said at the joint press conference with President Biden.

He added that his government functions in accordance with the Constitution, which was founded on democratic ideals and principles.

“Democracy is our spirit, it runs in our veins. We live in a democracy and the country’s founding fathers gave it the shape of a Constitution. Our government works in accordance with the Constitution. We have proved that democracy can deliver,” PM Modi said.

“When I say democracy can deliver, there is no scope of discrimination on the basis of caste, creed, religion, or gender. When we talk of democracy, if there are no human values, no humanity, and no human rights, then it is not democracy. And when you talk of democracy, accept democracy and when we live in a democracy, there is no scope for discrimination. We go by the principles of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayaas’. People, regardless of caste, creed and religion, have access to benefits provided by the government. There is no discrimination on the basis of religion, caste, age, geography,” he added. (ANI)

Pakistan Elections

Pakistan Elections: No Funds, Security Concerns, Political Turmoil

Pakistan has been plagued by a deep socio-political and economic crisis, bringing the country to a near standstill with no visible signs of a turnaround.

Now, credit rating agency Moody’s fresh assessment has brought more distressing news for Islamabad that the country could default anytime.

This is another disappointment in the grim list of successive setbacks for Pakistan, which is already struggling to contain the fallouts of extended political turmoil, a weakening security situation and an unprecedented economic crisis that has taken a severe toll on the common people’s wallets.

The IMF, in declining to assist Pakistan by rejecting a loan request, dealt it the most crushing blow.

“It is very unlikely that this programme is going to be revived. But even if it is revived, it doesn’t really pull Pakistan out of the mess in which it is,” said Sushant Sareen, Senior Fellow, Observers Research Foundation.

Even Pakistan’s sole and solid supporter, China’s assistance is not enough to undo, correct or improve the situation.

“What they keep on boasting about getting from China is all in terms of loans on extremely exorbitant conditions. They keep on saying the loans are on subsidized rates but an overwhelming proportion of the loans are actually commercial loans. They are not government-to-government loans. So, they are going to impose increasing burdens of debt,” said Ajay Sahni, executive director, South Asia Terrorism Portal.

Pakistan announced one of its most anticipated budgets earlier this month. The budget was the final opportunity for Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif-led government to appeal to the public before the country goes to the polls later this year. It was also imperative for the government to incorporate measures aimed at bringing the ailing economy back on track. The IMF conditions were to be met, so some structural reforms were expected.

However, the budget presented a stark contrast. Neither did it satisfy the common Pakistan citizen nor the global lender.

Sushant Sareen, a senior fellow from Observers Research Foundation said given the mood of the IMF and the international financial markets, he did not think anybody is ready to cut any slack for Pakistan right now, unless, of course, some major geopolitical event takes place, like what has happened in the past.

Whether it was 9/11 or the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, earlier, something at a mega scale takes place where Pakistan once again becomes a player in the international system, otherwise it’s a marginal country. It only has nuisance value because of its nuclear weapons.

In what experts believe could have been a better target with tight spending measures, Pakistan has set a fiscal deficit target of 6.54 per cent, slightly lower than the current deficit of 7 per cent. In addition to this, Pakistan increased subsidies and gave an unexpected salary hike to government employees- leaving the IMF dissatisfied and the informal and private sectors furious.

“We were hoping that there would be some relief for the poor but there is no relief for the poor. They have increased salaries of government servants but the common man will remain reeling under the skyrocketing prices,” said Mohammad Ramzan, a roadside vendor from Karachi.

Civil servants in Pakistan will get a 35 per cent hike, and state pensions will be 17 per cent higher. Pakistan entered into a deal in 2019, according to which, the IMF was supposed to give 6.5 billion USD to Pakistan, out of this, 1.1 billion USD is still undisbursed. This deal will expire at the end of June. Pakistan’s crumbling situation is screaming for this tranche of the bailout.

Sareen said the IMF is quite miffed with what has been presented because there is no reform, and there is no effort to put things right. In fact, they are spending money which they don’t have. The situation is so grim that they are now taking loans to even service their debt and that is an untenable situation.

The recently released budget doesn’t seem to satisfy the IMF. Cash-strapped Pakistan will spend 50.4 billion USD, of which 50 per cent of which is USD 25 billion, will be on debt service. 13 per cent of which, 6 billion USD, has been allocated to Defence. Pakistan is facing a balance of payment crisis. Its currency has plunged into a downward spiral; the dollar reserves are dwindling, there is an energy crisis, and inflation is skyrocketing. However, the government seems to have different priorities altogether.

The country’s economy, which was struggling for months, is now facing another major challenge as the protracted political war between the government and Imran Khan, which has already taken a massive socioeconomic and political toll on the country, is not seemingly ceasing anytime soon.

The ‘tragicomedy’ storyline of Pakistan is also featuring upcoming elections. The more pressing question here is: Can Pakistan even bear the burden of holding elections?

The critics say the country has no choice but to proceed with the scheduled elections. Abandoning this plan will do nothing to disavow the notion that civilian authorities are operating under the influence of the army.

The present security situation of the country has only compounded worries for Pakistan. Unabated militant attacks have claimed several Pakistani security personnel’s lives and little has been done to prevent any such future attacks. The government’s ineffective policies coupled with the growth of new rebel forces have contributed to Pakistan’s worsening security situation.

Despite claims of robust counterterrorism measures, militants continue to carry out attacks with impunity. The IMF has criticised the budgeting of the bankrupt economy as insufficient to accomplish the goals of its bailout program. This signals that the IMF may not give the last tranche to Pakistan.

The current government seems to be targeting in the dark. With Pakistan’s existing problems and the complex political economy, the produced budget is a meaningless document. (ANI)

Afghan Refugees Continue To Undergo Suffering, Mistreatment In Pakistan

The Afghan refugees who migrated to Pakistan after the Taliban took over fearing persecution are undergoing continuous suffering and an extremely “inhuman and hateful” mistreatment, the Khaama Press reported.

Ever since the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in August 2021, Pakistan is one of the primary destinations where Afghan refugees have migrated in search of better conditions.
New waves of Afghan refugees moved to Iran and Pakistan due to several reasons including fear of death threats and persecution by Afghanistan’s de facto regime.

However, in Pakistan, the migrants have continued to suffer numerous challenges including arbitrary detentions, harassment, and imprisonment by Pakistani police, because of being unable to provide valid residential permits and visas.

Notably, Pakistani police and other relevant agencies have continued to detain and incarcerate Afghan refugees in different parts of the country, including the capital city of Islamabad, despite having refugees having United Nations Higher Commissioner for Refugee’s (UNHCR) certificate, the Khaama Press reported.

Maniza Kakar, an attorney of Afghan prisoners in Karachi earlier claimed that Pakistani police tore the residential documents of some Afghan nationals while they were arrested.

The alleged mistreatment of Afghan refugees by the Pakistani government has been labelled “inhuman and hateful”, leading to widespread criticism not just in Pakistan and Afghanistan, but beyond.

“In less than two years, I have been detained three times by the police – harassed, humiliated and bitten due to not having a valid residential permit. Life has become extremely difficult for me in Pakistan. Every time, I come across police, I keep running from one ally to another to avoid possible imprisonment and forceful deportation to Afghanistan,” the Khaama Press quoted an Afghan refugee.

Another Afghan refugee who has freshly moved to France said to Khaama Press that, “Pakistan does not offer you anything other than countless sufferings. He asked other immigrants to follow up on their immigration cases, otherwise, they will continuously face mistreatment, harassment and humiliation”.

Most Afghan refugees currently residing in Pakistan, are undergoing an extremely lengthy process, causing ambiguity and hopelessness

According to Amnesty, over 3.7 million Afghans who fled Afghanistan for political and economic reasons now reside in Pakistan. Moreover, only 1.4 million people have official registration.

Meanwhile, The Afghanistan Embassy in Islamabad also requested Pakistan to cease detaining Afghans earlier this month after 250 people were held for lack of travel documents by counterterrorism officials and other agencies, as per Khaama Press. (ANI)

How US Laid Out Vegetarian Diplomacy On A Plate

When guests sat down for the state dinner and a luncheon that the US hosted for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, they encountered an all-vegetarian meal: no meat, no eggs. That’s thanks to the guest of honour, who is strictly vegetarian.

From the gala dinner for 400 plus VIP guests, the largest, the White House has ever seen to the luncheon hosted by US Vice President Kamala Harris and second gentleman Doughlas Emoff along with Secretary Antony Blinken, America made it clear that the symbolism on the plates was intentional.
Khichadi served at a luncheon at the state department:

Using freshly procured seasonal American ingredients while incorporating nods to the cuisine of India. The state luncheon had the humble Kichadi made of millet, lentils and spiced Okra noodle, while the state dinner included marinated millet and grilled corn with compressed watermelon and tangy avocado sauce along with stuffed portobello mushrooms with a saffron-infused risotto in the main course.

The first lady of the United States, Jill Biden, said the aim was “honouring the 70 years of our alliance with symbols and moments of beauty that reflect both our countries.”

“We hope to showcase the harmony of our cultures and our people intertwined,” she said.

If guests so desired, they could request a fish dish — sumac-roasted sea bass — along with crisped millet cakes and summer squashes.

For the guests who do imbibe, one of the wines accompanying this week’s meal also paid particular homage to the ties between host and guest. A red blend came from Patel Winery in Napa Valley, which is owned by Raj Patel, who was born in India and settled in California as a boy. Other wines include a Sandhi Patterson Chandenmay 2020.

PM Modi was the third head of state to be welcomed with such prestige during the Biden administration, after France’s Emmanuel Macron and South Korea’s Yoon Suk-Yeol.

The decor too appeared to be another diplomatic aspect of the luncheon and dinner, encompassing the cultures of both countries while honouring PM Modi. Thursday night witnessed a decor including imagery of the peacock and the bald eagle, the Indian and U.S. national birds, respectively. The tables were adorned with peonies, that some mistook for lotus blooms, revered in Indian design and a symbol of Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party.

Samosa served with mint chutney and marigold flowers:

While the luncheon was a more formal and less colour affair, gold was the central theme along with fresh flowers used to enhance the overall look of the lunch served. For instance, the evergreen Samosas, stuffed with spinach and served with a tangy mint sauce wore a saffron marigold flower.

The star-studded meals witnessed the who’s who at the luncheon and state dinner:

Apple CEO Tim Cook, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and FedEx CEO Raj Subramaniam, Reliance Industry’s Mukesh and Nita Ambani, Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath, and Anand Mahindra were among the attendees.

Jill Biden wearing an emerald green Ralph Lauren:

There was a deep emphasis on the colour green. With different variants of green drapes not just in the decor but also on what was being worn. Biden opted for a Ralph Lauren number – a custom-made emerald green gown featuring an off-the-shoulder neckline, gold shimmer, full sleeves, and a body-hugging silhouette. While Vice President Kamala opted for a gold Naeem Khan sequined gown, a necklace and heavy earrings. (ANI)
