SC Declines To Cancel Bail Of Accused In Morbi Bridge Collapse

The Supreme Court has declined to cancel the bail granted by the Gujarat High Court to an accused who had issued tickets to visitors on the day when the Morbi bridge collapsed last year, which claimed over 140 lives.

A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra did not agree to the submissions of the lawyer, appearing for the Tragedy Victim Association, Morbi, seeking cancellation of bail of the man.

The bench while dismissing the plea on Monday said, “He was just selling the tickets”.

Tragedy Victim Association, Morbi, approached the apex court seeking cancellation of bail granted to an accused Mansukhbhai Valjibhai Topia by the High Court on June 9.

The Association said the High Court wrongly granted bail to the accused.

The Gujarat High Court granted bail to the accused while taking into note the fact that the investigation was over and the charge sheet was already filed.

More than 140 people died and over 100 people were injured due to the collapse of the suspension bridge over the Morbi Macchu River.

As per reports, the British-era bridge was closed for about eight months for maintenance and the repair work was being completed by a private agency.

The Gujarat Police has filed a First Information Report under IPC sections 304 and 308 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) in the bridge collapse tragedy.

The Gujarat government has constituted a five-member committee headed to probe the bridge collapse incident. (ANI)

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju

Cong Will Regret The No-Confidence Motion Later: Rijiju

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, while arguing against the no-confidence motion brought by the Opposition parties in Lok Sabha, said that the Congress will regret it later.

“This no-confidence motion has been brought at a very wrong time and in a wrong manner. The Congress party will regret it later,” Union minister Kiren Rijiju said in Lok Sabha.

The motion was moved by Congress Party MP Gaurav Gogoi on July 26 and was accepted by Speaker Om Birla. Gogoi, On Tuesday, initiated the debate on the motion.

The minister further slammed the previous UPA government at the Centre for “racial discrimination and atrocities” faced by the people from Northeast in the national capital.

“Before 2014, many people from the Northeast faced racial discrimination and atrocities in Delhi and other major cities of the country. After 2014 the situation changed, and the DGP conference was held in Guwahati for the first time after independence. During this meeting, the PM directed that police must ensure the security of people from the Northeast,” Kiren Rijiju said in Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

Kiren Rijiju also said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi won the trust of eight Northeast states by working for them.

“Working for people and understanding their issues is how we can reach them. PM Modi won the trust of the people living in the eight Northeast states that way,” he added.

Further, hitting out the Opposition bloc I.N.D.I.A– the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance, Rijiju said that the name of the coalition will not help the parties when they are working “against India”.

“Nothing will happen by naming the alliance I.N.D.I.A when you are actually working against India,” he said.

Rijiju also said that because of a ‘strong’ leadership in the country, no foreign power can interfere in India’s internal matters.

“…The days are gone when foreign powers would tell India what to do and what not to do…Today, no foreign power can interfere in our internal matters…,” the minister said.

The debate on the no-confidence motion was initiated by Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, with heated exchanges between the opposition and treasury benches.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is facing his second no-confidence motion in Parliament today, the first in his second term as the PM.

However, Modi’s government won’t lose the vote as his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies have a majority in parliament.

But opposition leaders say the debate will force Modi to speak on ongoing ethnic clashes in Manipur state.

Any Lok Sabha MP, who has the support of 50 colleagues, can, at any point of time, introduce a motion of no-confidence against the Council of Ministers.

Thereafter, a discussion on the motion takes place. MPs who support the motion highlight the government’s shortcomings, and the Treasury Benches respond to the issues they raise. (ANI)

This is a special provision for Indian alumni to enable them to keep close links with France and their French counterparts.

These scholarships cover various disciplines, allowing students to pursue their desired academic fields without financial constraints,” the press release read.

With 570 French companies employing more than 400 000 staff in India, graduates with French qualifications gain access to a wide spectrum of career prospects, and the chance to work with globally renowned organizations.

The two leaders noted that the diplomatic and political engagements between India and France are among their “closest and most trusted.” PM Modi and French President Macron called the defence and security partnership between the two nations “strong.”

“Our political and diplomatic engagements are among our closest and most trusted. Our defence and security partnership is strong and extends from seabed to space. Our economic ties reinforce our prosperity and sovereignty and advance resilient supply chains,” the Joint Communique on the visit of PM Modi’s visit to France read.

Macron and PM Modi noted that the deepening ties in education, science and technology, culture, burgeoning youth exchanges, and growing Diaspora are bringing the relationship closer to the people and sowing the seeds of future partnerships.

My Cycle Was Broken By Senior School Boys: Hrithik

Actor Hrithik Roshan has stood out to be one of the most versatile actors in Bollywood. He made his acting debut 23 years ago with the romantic drama ‘Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai’ and ever since then there has been no looking back for him. Over the years, he has delivered various impeccable performances that have established him as one of the most talented stars in the Hindi film industry. With every film, he has tried his best to leave a mark. Remember ‘Koi… Mil Gaya’?

Helmed by his father Rakesh Roshan, the film saw Hrithik in a completely different avatar. He essayed the role of a mentally-challenged guy Rohit Mehra with the sensibilities of an 11-year-old. Hrithik received several accolades for his performance as a developmentally impaired character.

As the film clocked 20 years today, the 49-year-old star opened up about how he resonated with the character of Rohit. He took a stroll down memory lane and shared that he had faced a lot of bullying as a child like his character in the film.

“I related with Rohit’s character completely. Growing up, I was bullied due to my stutter. On days I wouldn’t want to go to school and I would cry to my mother. In fact, the scene where Rohit’s scooty is broken by Raj and his friends actually happened to me in real life. I had a BMX cycle that was my most treasured possession as a child. My cycle was broken by some senior boys, and I was heartbroken. The vulnerability that was required for Rohit’s character, life had already given me through my personal experiences,” Hrithik told ANI.

‘Mera Ghar Poora Hindustan Hai’: Rahul On Delhi Bungalow

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, whose parliamentary membership has been restored has reportedly got back possession of his official bungalow in the national capital.

“Mera ghar poora Hindustan hai,” (the whole country is my home), the Congress leader responded to reporters who asked him about the development on Tuesday.

Gandhi visited the All India Congress Committee headquarters here to take part in a meeting with leaders of the Assam unit of the party.

Rahul arrived at the AICC Headquarters for a meeting with the leaders of Assam Congress.

Rahul Gandhi was on Monday reinstated as a Member of Parliament after the Lok Sabha secretariat issued a new order that effectively withdrew a previous order that had led to his disqualification after being convicted in the ‘Modi surname’ case.

The Wayanad MP had vacated his 12 Tughlaq Lane bungalow on April 12 this year, after his disqualification as a member of the Parliament.

The move to vacate the bungalow had come a day after Surat Session’s Court pronounced an order on April 20 on his interim application for a stay on his conviction in the defamation case.

Gandhi has since then moved into former Congress President Sonia Gandhi’s 10 Janpath Road residence.  (ANI)

MP Nishikant Dubey

No-Trust Motion: Dubey’s ‘Bete’, ‘Damaad’ Jibe At Sonia In LS

Bharatiya Janata Party MP Nishikant Dubey, on Tuesday, initiating his party’s debate on the no-confidence motion in Lok Sabha, took a jibe at Sonia Gandhi and also hit out at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

“This no-confidence motion has been brought. Why has this been brought? Sonia ji (Gandhi) is sitting here…I think she has to do two things – “Bete (son) ko set karna hai aur Damad (son-in-law) ko bhent karna hai” (She wants to set his son [Rahul Gandhi] and wants to gift his son-in-law). …That is the base of this motion,” Dubey said.

The former Congress President was seen laughing at the BJP MP’s remark.

This motion is against the son of a poor, against a man who gave houses, drinking water, toilets to the people. It is against the poor, the BJP MP said.

Dubey also targeted Rahul Gandhi over his remarks on Savarkar and brought up the issue of the Supreme Court staying the Congress leader’s conviction in the ‘Modi’ surname defamation case after which the Wayanad MP’s membership in the Lower House was restored.

“The Supreme Court has not given a judgement. It has given a stay order…He is saying that he will not apologise… Secondly, he says “I am not Savarkar” – You can never be Veer Savakar…,” Dubey said.

The debate on the no-confidence motion against the BJP-led government began with Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi initiating the debate. Gogoi stated that the opposition I.N.D.I.A alliance was forced to move the house due to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “maun vrat” (vow of silence) on Manipur.

Initially, the Congress said that Rahul Gandhi will begin the debate.

Responding to the last-minute change in the Congress speakers’ list Dubey took a dig at Rahul Gandhi and said that “Maybe Rahul Gandhi wasn’t ready today or maybe he woke late. Gaurav Gogoi spoke well. I am a victim of turbulent times of Manipur. My uncle suffered there and was injured.”

Opposition members have been seeking discussion under Rule 267 in the Rajya Sabha since the beginning of the monsoon session of Parliament on July 20.

Manipur had been on the boil for the last three months after ethnic clashes broke out between two tribal communities Meities and Kukis, when the Manipur High Court asked the state government to consider adding one of the communities to the list of Scheduled Tribes. (ANI)

Want To Break PM’s Maun Vrat On Manipur: Cong MP Gogoi

A discussion on the no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government began in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday with Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi initiating the debate.

Stating that the PM had taken a ‘maun vrat’ (vow of silence) to not speak in the Parliament so the opposition was compelled to introduce the motion to “break his silence.”

“Why did he not visit Manipur to date? Why did it take almost 80 days to finally speak on Manipur and when he did speak it was just for 30 seconds? Why has the Chief Minister not been sacked the Manipur CM so far?,” Gogoi asked.

Earlier in the day Congress chief whip K Suresh had said that Rahul Gandhi, who was reinstated as the Lok Sabha MP a day ago will open the debate on the no-confidence motion.

According to sources, a time of 12 hours has been fixed for the discussion. The ruling BJP will get around seven hours to partake in the discussion and around one hour 15 minutes has been allotted for the Congress party.

The debate on the no-confidence motion against the BJP-led government is likely to take place on August 8 and 9 in the Lok Sabha and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to give a reply on August 10.
