Article 370 British-Arab influencer Amjad Taha

British-Arab Influencer Taha’s Tweet On ‘Hope’ In Kashmir Goes Viral

On the eve of the anniversary of the amendment of Article 370 which removed special status for Jammu and Kashmir, British-Arab influencer, Amjad Taha, famed for his posts on “paradise on earth” visited the valley to see for himself what the current status of Kashmiris is like.

After his visit, Taha said he felt “inspired” by India’s peace measures that “signals hope” for future generations.

“Revisiting Indian Kashmir, I’m again inspired by India’s peace measures there, prioritizing sustainable solutions over temporary ones. Despite past turmoil, the region now signals hope for future generations. Kashmir: a land of incredible people and beauty,” Taha posted on Twitter- which goes by X now.

His post had several thousand likes and retweets.

The social media influencer of British-Bahraini origin had earlier this May ahead of the G20 Tourism Working Group meeting in Srinagar, highlighted the peaceful coexistence and mutual enjoyment of the diverse land by Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, and Christians in Kashmir, all of whom contribute to global innovation and development.

The British Arab influencer described the beauty of Kashmir as a “paradise on Earth,” and said that this place has protected the Earth and may be the answer to climate change.

Meanwhile, two-time Oscar-winning producer Guneet Monga Kapoor has praised the crucial role played by local Kashmiris and their “unwavering resilience” in preserving the “heavenly paradise.”

“Meet Jannat, a 7-year-old wonder, who tirelessly cleans and preserves the serenity of Dal Lake in Srinagar. Kudos to the local Kashmiris, whose unwavering resilience has played a crucial role in preserving the heavenly paradise,” she posted on Twitter adding a short video clip of a young girl from Srinagar who is on a mission to keep the famous Dal Lake in Srinagar clean.

The girl who is identified as Jannat, has been taking out garbage from the lake since she was five.

Today marks the fourth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370 under which Jammu and Kashmir enjoyed special status in the Union of India. Along with the scrapping of the law, the erstwhile state was bifurcated into the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

Notably, Article 370 — which was a temporary provision as per the Indian Constitution providing special rights to the J-K region — was scrapped by the current Bharatiya Janata Party government at the Centre.

Ever since the abrogation of Article 370, infrastructure has grown at a rapid pace, and peace has been restored in the valley. Influencers and celebrity figures have further highlighted the rising public confidence in the region.

Meawhile, Supreme Court has begun hearing petitions challenging the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution of India. (ANI)

Pakistan Imran Khan

Imran Arrested, Gets 3-Years Jail In Toshakhana Case; Disqualified For 5 Years

A Pakistan district and sessions court on Saturday sentenced former Prime Minister Imran Khan for three years in prison in the Toshakhana case i.e. for illegally selling state gifts and he has been disqualified him from politics for a period of five years, local media reported.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 100,000 on the PTI chief, Geo News reported.

Khan was arrested from his Zaman Park residence in Lahore soon after being convicted in the Toshakhana case today, Geo News reported.

Dawn reported that during the hearing today, presided by Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADSJ) Humayun Dilawar, the trial court ruled that charges against the former prime minister in the case were proven.

“Imran Khan deliberately submitted fake details [of Toshakhana gifts] to the ECP and is found guilty of corrupt practices,” he stated and sent the PTI chief to jail for three years under Section 174 of the Election Act.

Ahead of today’s proceedings, a large contingent of police was deployed outside the court premises with only lawyers allowed inside the courtroom.

The development comes after the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Friday set aside the session court’s verdict on the Toshakhana reference against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman as maintainable and ordered the lower court to rehear the case.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on August 2 deferred the indictment of former Pakistan PM in the Toshakhana case, Pakistan-based Dawn reported.

Earlier on July 3, Imran Khan had lashed out at the Shehbaz Sharif government, alleging that the administration has “made a plan” to put him in jail and the whole episode that transpired over his arrest was “pre-planned”.

Giving clarification over the allegations in the Toshakhana case, Khan claimed that the gifts were sold “as per the rules” and everything has been declared in FDR.

“As per the law, when PM, President, Army Chief receives gifts, it goes to Toshakhana, where it is valued. It is done through an FDR, with an initial value and then an appraisal. If there are any excess value, they give the option of purchasing. This is the rule. Under this I took many gifts and refused others. Whatever I sold, is declared in FBR and is under capital gains tax. What is wrong here? Also, under this case, NAB, Election Commission and FIR is also filed. It is just not possible that three cases are being run on the same issue,” he had then said.

The case pertains to the allegations that the former PM “deliberately concealed” details of the gifts he retained from the Toshaskhana — a repository where presents handed to government officials from foreign officials are kept — during his time as the prime minister and proceeds from their reported sales.

The Toshakhana case registered by ruling party lawmakers is based on a criminal complaint filed by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), as per the Dawn report.

As per the Toshakhana rules, gifts and other such materials received by persons to whom these rules are applicable shall be reported to the Cabinet Division. Notably, PTI Chairman Imran Khan has faced a number of legal cases over his retention of gifts. He has also been disqualified by the electoral body over the issue.

On May 9, this year, former PM and PTI Chairman Imran Khan was arrested from inside the High Court in Islamabad by National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on the charges of corruption in connection with the Al-Qadir Trust, which he owns alongside his wife, Bushra Bibi.

Following Khan’s arrest, his party called for demonstrations, which turned violent at many places. The administration resorted to crackdown and many arrests were made across the country. The people accused in the May 9 violence are being tried at military courts. (ANI)

US former President Donald Trump America

Need One More Indictment To Close Out This Election: Trump

Hitting out at the Biden administration, former United States President Donald Trump on Friday said that he wears the indictments as a “badge of honour” and he needs just one more to “close out” the upcoming presidential elections, New York Post reported.

He was delivering a speech at the annual Alabama GOP dinner in Montgomery on Friday.

Trump said that the growing list of charges he faces has only helped his campaign and said he considers each indictment a “truly great badge of honour.”

“It’s not going to make any impact, because every time they file an indictment we go way up in the polls,” New York Post quoted Trump, the front-running Republican presidential candidate, saying to the crowd.

“We need one more indictment to close out this election,” he joked, to cheers. “One more indictment and this election is closed out, nobody has even a chance.”

Trump has been indicted three times since March. The latest charges, filed Tuesday after an investigation by special counsel Jack Smith, accuse Trump of knowingly spreading false information about widespread voter fraud after he lost the 2020 election to President Biden.

Trump told the crowd Friday that he referred to the indictments as “a badge of honour” because he is “being indicted for you.”

“So, thanks a lot,” he said.

Slamming the Biden government further, Trump called the Justice Department “corrupt”, saying charges could have been filed against him years ago, but instead “they waited right until the middle of the election”. (ANI)

“They waited until I became the dominant force in the polls because we’re dominating everyone, including Biden, in the polls. And then they filed them all, everyone, one of them, at the same time,” New York Post quoted Trump as saying.

The former President blasted the trio of indictments as “election interference” and called the latest case “an outrageous criminalization of political speech.”

“This ridiculous indictment against us, it’s not a legal case — it’s an act of desperation by a failed and disgraced Joe Biden and his radical thugs,” Trump said.

“The reason this is happening is simple: Joe Biden is the most incompetent and at the same time the most corrupt president in the history of the United States,” the New York Post quoted Trump as saying.

“Every time more Biden corruption is exposed his henchmen indict me because they want to knock out the bad publicity,” he said, calling it a “cover-up” for the “Biden crime family.”

Earlier in the day, Trump posted on his Truth Social a vague warning: “IF YOU GO AFTER ME, I’M COMING AFTER YOU.”

However, he had reportedly been warned not to issue threats by the judge during Thursday’s arraignment, as per New York Post.

Earlier on Friday, Trump also pleaded not guilty to the new charges special counsel Jack Smith brought against him in the case alleging mishandling of classified documents from his time in the White House, CNN reported.

The filing marked the second time in 24 hours that the former president entered a ‘not guilty’ plea, following his arraignment Thursday in the special counsel’s separate investigation into efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election.

Earlier on Thursday, Trump pleaded not guilty to four criminal charges related to special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. (ANI)

Gyanvapi Mosque complex Muslim side ASI

Satisfied, Will Not Obstruct, Says Muslim Side On ASI Survey Of Gyanvapi Mosque

As a team of the Archaeological Survey of India on Saturday marked the second day of its scientific survey of the Gyanvapi Mosque complex, the Muslim side said they are “satisfied” and will not obstruct the process.

Supreme Court on Friday declined to stay a scientific survey by ASI of the Gyanvapi mosque premises in Varanasi.

Mumtaz Ahmed, Advocate representing the Muslim side told reporters here today, “We are satisfied with the ASI Survey and we are not going to obstruct…ASI Survey. Till yesterday, we were not participating but today we are participating and assisting the ASI team…”

An ASI team arrived at the mosque complex, adjacent to Kashi Vishwanath Temple, here this morning to continue the court-ordered scientific survey of the complex, excluding the Wuzu Khana. The survey began at around 09.00 am amid tight security.

The scientific survey of the complex began on Friday amid tight security, following Allahabad High Court’s order, which allowed the ASI to conduct the survey, to determine if the mosque was built on a pre-existing temple.

Allahabad High Court on Thursday dismissed the plea filed by the Muslim party, Anjuman Intezamia Masjid Committee, challenging the Varanasi court order allowing the ASI to conduct a scientific survey of the Gyanvapi mosque premises, except the ‘Wazukhana’ area where a “Shivling” was claimed to have been found last year.

The Anjuman Intezamia Masjid Committee had challenged the Varanasi District Judge’s July 21 order.

On July 21, Varanasi district judge AK Vishvesha ordered the ASI survey of the Gyanvapi complex on an application moved by four Hindu women on May 16, 2023.

The order of the district judge, however, excluded the Wuzu Khana (ablution pond area) of the complex, which has been sealed on the order of the Supreme Court.

Earlier on Friday, the top court declined to stay the scientific survey by ASI.

A bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said that ASI has clarified that the entire survey would be completed without any excavation and without causing any damage to the structure. The entire process of scientific survey shall be concluded with non-invasive methodology, the bench ordered.

“We reiterate the direction of the High Court that there shall be no excavation,” said the Supreme Court.

The bench noted that Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court took note of the affidavit of ASI that it is not carrying out any excavation during its survey and no part of wall etc. will be touched.

The Anjuman Intezamia Masjid Committee has challenged the Allahabad High Court order allowing ASI to conduct scientific survey by ASI of the Gyanvapi mosque premises.

During the hearing, senior advocate Huzefa Ahmad appearing for mosque committee objected to the survey saying if someone now comes and files a frivolous plea saying that there is a monument below this structure, will the court order ASI survey?

To this CJI DY Chandrachud replied, “What is frivolous to you is faith to other side.”

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta for Uttar Pradesh said ASI affidavit before the High Court says no drilling, cutting of stone will be done from the existing structure, no wall or structure will be damaged and it will be done by the non-destructive method.

Huzefa said when you conduct survey, it is like uncovering wounds of the past and that is what Places of Worship Act sought to injunct. “You are unravelling wounds of past here,” he said.

Justice Pardiwala told Huzefa that despite assuring that there will be no harm to the structure, you are opposed to the survey.

“This survey will be in form of a report. Tomorrow, if you succeed on maintainability, it will just be a piece of paper. Let the survey be undertaken by the ASI,” Justice Pardiwala said. (ANI)

14 MN Children In Sudan In Need Of Humanitarian Support: UNICEF

Fourteen million children are in “dire need” of humanitarian support in Sudan, the United Nations children’s agency warned on Friday, as a deadly conflict in the country deepens its hunger crisis, CNN reported.

“The numbers are staggering. Almost 14 million children — a number roughly equivalent to every single child in Colombia, France, Germany, or Thailand — are in dire need of humanitarian support,” UNICEF deputy executive director Ted Chaiban said in a briefing on Friday.

Over 1.7 million children in Sudan have been forced out of their homes facing risks of hunger, disease, violence, and family separation, he said.

This is in addition to the 1.9 million children, who were already displaced in Sudan before the latest crisis, CNN reported.

“Three million children under five are malnourished with 700,000 at risk of severe acute malnutrition and mortality. 1.7 million children under the age of one are at risk of missing critical vaccinations, raising the risk of disease outbreaks,” Chaiban added.

Since the Sudan conflict began in mid-April, at least 435 children have been killed and more than 2,025 injured, according to UNICEF, CNN reported.

Over 20 million people in Sudan face severe hunger, a figure that has nearly doubled since last year, the UN warned on Thursday.

War broke out between the army and the Rapid Support Forces on April 15. The conflict has since forced some 3.5 million people to flee their homes, including 844,000 who have gone to neighboring countries in search of safety, according to the United Nations. (ANI)

Rahul Gandhi Lalu Modi

Rahul Calls On Lalu After SC Stay In Defamation Case

After the Supreme Court cleared the decks for his return as an MP by putting a stay on his conviction in the ‘Modi’ surname case, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday called on former Bihar chief minister and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) patriarch, Lalu Prasad Yadav, in the national capital.

In a tweet, the All India Congress Committee shared pictures of the two leaders meeting at the New Delhi residence of RJD MP and Lalu’s daughter, Misa Bharti.

Congress general secretary KC Venugopal and Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav were also present at the meeting.

Earlier, the RJD patriarch had, in a lighter vein, advised Rahul to get married during the inaugural meeting of the united Opposition in Patna in June.

The Congress and the RJD are partners in the grand Opposition bloc — Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (I.N.D.I.A).

The meeting in Patna was convened by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

Meanwhile, after getting a reprieve from the Supreme Court in the criminal defamation case, Rahul addressed a press conference at the Congress’s national headquarters in Delhi, thanking the people for their love and support and saying “truth always triumphs”.

“Truth always triumphs, if not today then tomorrow or the day after. I thank people for their support,” he said at the press conference in the national capital.

The Supreme Court, in an interim order on Friday, stayed his conviction in the criminal defamation case over the ‘Modi surname’ remark.

The apex court issued notices to the Gujarat government and the complainant in July on an appeal of the Congress leader challenging the Gujarat High Court order.

The Gujarat High Court, had, in its order earlier, declined to stay his conviction in the criminal defamation case in which Rahul was sentenced to two years in jail by the Surat court over the ‘Modi surname’ remark.

After his conviction in the case, Gandhi was disqualified as MP from Kerala’s Wayanad on March 24.

Earlier in March, a magisterial court convicted Rahul Gandhi for his ‘Modi’ surname remarks ahead of the 2019 national polls. (ANI)

Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) arrived at the Gyanvapi mosque

ASI Begins Day-2 Survey At Gyanvapi Mosque Complex

A team of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) arrived at the Gyanvapi mosque complex here on Saturday morning to continue the court-ordered scientific survey of the complex, adjacent to Kashi Vishwanath Temple, excluding Wuzu Khana.

The survey began at around 09.00 am today amid tight security.

The scientific survey of the complex began on Friday amid tight security, following Allahabad High Court’s order, which allowed the ASI to conduct the survey, to determine if the mosque was built on a pre-existing temple.

Sudhir Tripathi, a lawyer from the Hindu side, said that the scientific survey will clear everything.

They have come at the direction of the Supreme Court. We welcome it. We want the matter to be resolved soon. The survey will clarify everything,” the lawyer said.

Russia Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny

Russia Sentences Kremlin Critic Navalny To 19 Years In Prison

Russia on Friday sentenced Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny to 19 years in prison on extremism charges, CNN reported citing Russian media reports.

This is a fresh blow to the jailed blogger that comes amid an intensifying crackdown on dissent.

He was accused of creating an extremist community, financing extremist activities and a number of other crimes and was found guilty at the high-security penal colony in which he has been detained.

Navalny is already in jail, serving 11 and a half years in a maximum security facility on fraud and other charges that he says were trumped up.

He and his supporters claimed that his arrest and imprisonment were politically motivated, intended to silence his criticism of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The trial ended in June and took place behind closed doors at the IK-6 penal colony at Melekhovo, around 155 miles east of Moscow, where Navalny is being held.

This new verdict has extended Navalny’s jail time period, reported CNN.

Navalny has been incarcerated in Russia since his return to the country in January 2021, on charges of violating terms of probation related to a years-old fraud case, which he dismisses as politically motivated.

In February 2021, Navalny was ordered to serve two years and eight months in prison for breaching his parole terms while he was hospitalized in Germany for nerve agent poisoning that he blames on the Kremlin, as per CNN.

In March 2022, A Russian court sentenced Navalny to nine years in prison and fined him 1.2 million rubles (USD 11,527) in separate criminal cases of fraud and contempt of court in a move that is being seen as a crackdown on the Kremlin critic.

The sentence was announced by the Lefortovo district court judge Margarita Kotova who announced the sentence to nine years in a “strict regime penal colony” for a criminal case of fraud and contempt of court, Sputnik News Agency reported.

The fraud case was initiated over a year ago. Navalny allegedly stole and spent over 350 million rubles (USD 3.1 million) donated to his Anti-Corruption Foundation for personal use, Sputnik reported citing investigation details.

His anti-corruption organization called, FBK, had last year been designated an “extremist organization and foreign agent” and subsequently banned by the Russian authorities.

The other charge in the case concerns Navalny allegedly insulting Judge Vera Akimova, who sentenced him to a fine of 850,000 rubles (USD 7,500) for slandering a veteran of World War 2, Ignat Artemenko, Sputnik further reported, adding that the two offences were investigated separately, but before being submitted to the court, they were combined into one case.
