Can Lakshadweep Ecosystem Handle Unruly Domestic Tourists?

‘Can Lakshadweep Ecosystem Handle Unruly Domestic Tourists?’

Saimi Sattar, a travel writer-editor who is currently working in the hospitality sector, says unregulated tourism can sound the death knell of fragile coastal ecosystem. Her views:

Lakshadweep has been on my bucket list for quite some time. As it always happens, whenever we travel to pristine places, there is always this sense of trepidation that once it is exposed to tourism, its beauty will be compromised. Kashmir is one example. The unbridled tourism that the current Union Territory witnessed last year was evident in the mounds of plastic bags and bottles that were dumped everywhere — even in a location as remote as Sonmarg! It is as if people want to leave a footprint behind, however ugly. And this seems to be especially true of the travellers from the sub-continent.

Tourism is always accompanied by an increase in the demand for energy, waste generation and vehicular traffic. Add to it the top-heavy commercialization – and this is where my worry lies. A heavy influx of tourists will inevitably spell a disaster for a place that is as eco-sensitive as Lakshadweep. For, the truth is that unregulated tourism can sound the death knell of the local ecosystem.

The blueprint for sustainable development in a coastal island would include: a robust sewage system, smaller hotels that leave a lessor carbon footprint, eco-friendly transport and proper waste management. However, it seems that we do not have time for that. Nor do we seem to have an understanding or intention to preserve the ecology.

As for the recent hyper-nationalism we witnessed regarding Lakshadweep and the Maldives, aren’t these predictable given the rise of the Right-wing in many parts of the world? Mohamed Muizzu won the election in Maldives with the slogan of ‘India Out’. From there it was just an obvious step whereby his ministers abused the Indian prime minister.

Thereafter, it was only a matter of time before Indian social media warriors retaliated with predictable aggression. Since India is the biggest country in the subcontinent, we have been flexing our muscles, especially after we became legitimate guests at the high table with the western and so-called ‘civilised’ nations. No wonder, the smaller countries see us as a bully in the playground.

The most incredulous thing is that sometimes it seems that our foreign policy is being led by the social media! Over the years we have seen that foreign policy is discussed, the long-term repercussions assessed, and a policy is framed taking into account the geo-political situation in the neighbourhood. Being reactive is equivalent to being juvenile. The battles on Twitter should be restricted to the platform and not spill over to real life — which is what has happened here.

On a lighter note, till December 2022, only 7.2 per cent of Indians had passports. So of all those outraging on social media, how many would actually have travelled to the Maldives is anyone’s guess.

As for relations with our neighbours, it is transparent that age-old ties have turned frosty with each of them in recent times: Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and now the Maldives. The relations with various Pakistani regimes were always unstable but never have they been at such an all-time low. It is sad. There are so many shared cross-cultural connections — in terms of what we wear, the food we eat, the festivals we celebrate, architecture, music, poetry, literature — the list is endless. But all of us prefer to butt heads rather than script a cohesive future.

It is not as if each of these countries do not have its problems; poverty, income disparity, lack of education, violence, communalism — our glasses are full to the brim. All of us are unitedly rank low on human indices. The way forward would have been to overcome this through cross-border solutions. But rhetoric wins elections. Not sensibility. And that seems true for many nations these days.

I have the fondest memories of travelling to Pakistan as a student. My father’s only sister lived in Karachi. The abundance of love that strangers showered on me during my visits, because I was an Indian, was heartening. That is a privilege exclusively reserved for Indians. Cab drivers did not accept money, shopkeepers did not charge us for stuff, and customs officers made sure that we were not harassed by their underlings. The list goes on.

I had returned the last time with the promise to my uncle that I would visit Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa next. Sadly, my uncle passed away more than 10 years ago. With our relations with Pakistan being what they are and the difficulties in getting a visa, I wonder if I will ever visit the country where the people are our mirror image. It is a tragedy.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma

Assam CM Asks State Police To File Complaint Against Rahul

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday instructed the state Director General of Police (DGP) to register a case against Rahul Gandhi for allegedly “provoking crowd.”

The Congress leader is leading the party’s Manipur to Mumbai Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.

Earlier in the day, Congress workers who were stopped from entering Guwahati city clashed with Assam police.

In a post on social media platform X, chief minster Sarma said “Naxalite tactics” were alien to the Assam’s culture.

“These are not part of Assamese culture. We are a peaceful state. Such “Naxalite tactics” are completely alien to our culture. I have instructed DGP Assam Police to register a case against your leader Rahul Gandhi for provoking the crowd and use the footage you have posted on your handles as evidence. Your unruly behaviour and violation of agreed guidelines have resulted in a massive traffic jam in Guwahati now,” Sarma said on X.

Rahul Gandhi had earlier today claimed that he was not allowed to interact with students of the state.

Heavy security was deployed at Khanapara Area, the entry point of Guwahati for the Yatra earlier this morning. A large number of police were present at the scene to stop the yatra from entering Guwahati.

Rahul Gandhi was seen addressing party workers standing on top of a bus. Assam Congress took to social media platform X to state “CM @himantabiswa has been using every ploy to derail the #BharatJodoNyayYatra right from day 1, whether by using his goons, @assampolice or administration. Tearing off posters, banners, hoardings & finally barricading the Yatra down at Batadraba. While a roadshow was allowed when @JPNadda Ji visited Guwahati, today the yatra was not allowed through the city citing security reasons. APCC president @BhupenKBorah led the protest against police oppression. Our fight for justice will continue…”

Rahul Gandhi earlier said that efforts are being made to enslave students of North East and India, adding “There is no need for any student to be afraid.”

He also alleged that the Home Minister of the country had given instructions to prevent him from meeting students of Assam.

“We are being stopped everywhere. The Home Minister of the country picked up the phone and called CM Himanta and said that Rahul Gandhi should not meet the students of Assam. That’s not important whether Rahul Gandhi comes here or not. What’s important is that the students must be allowed to listen to whomever they want to. But it is not happening in any schools and colleges in Assam. You are being told that you cannot speak your language. You are being told that you cannot have your history,” he said. (ANI)

Delhi's Jamia Millia Islamia

Delhi: Jamia Varsity To Probe Students’ Protest Against Ayodhya Temple

A group of students at Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia staged a protest on the university campus against the demolition of Babri Masjid on the day of ‘Pran Pratishtha’ ceremony at Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya.

During the protest on Monday, the students raised slogans such as “RSS down down” and “Strike for Babri.” A Jamia official told ANI the university is further looking into the matter.

Videos of the protest also went viral and were circulated on social media platforms. In one of the videos, two students were seen holding placards with photos of demolished masjids and raising slogans, while campus security personnel tried to stop them.

The university authorities said that the students were removed from the spot as soon as the protest started.

“There were 2-3 students who raised slogans and showed placards yesterday. When we got the knowledge the students were removed from the place. The university is further looking into the matter,” a Jamia official told ANI.

He also said that ongoing exams for the evening shift went smoothly.

“No problems were faced during the exams. Jamia called the half day off, so the first half exams were postponed,” he added.

The Pran Pratishtha of Ram Lalla was held at Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya on Monday. Following the Pran Pratishtha, the shrine was opened to the public on Tuesday.

The temple’s construction was made possible by a Supreme Court judgment in 2019 on the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid title suit.

The constitutional bench comprising the five judges passed a unanimous judgment in favour of the temple side on November 9, 2019, where it said that although the demolition of the Babri Masjid was illegal, the Hindu plaintiffs laying claim to the disputed 2.77 acres of land made a better case. Pran Pratishtha Of Ram Lalla Is Also That Of Human Values: Modi

Pran Pratishtha Of Ram Lalla Is Also That Of Human Values: Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that the newly-constructed temple is a symbol of national consciousness and the ceremony held on Monday to unveil the idol of Ram Lalla is also the ‘Pran Pratishtha’ of human values and highest ideals.

Addressing the gathering after Pran Pratishtha of the idol of Ram Lalla here, PM Modi said that Lord Ram is the faith of India, the country’s foundation, its India and glory.

He said devotees of Lord Ram are completely absorbed in this historic moment which is “divine and holiest of all”.

“This is a temple of national consciousness in the form of Ram. Ram is the faith of India, Ram is the foundation of India, Ram is the idea of India, Ram is the law of India. Ram is the prestige of India, Ram is the glory of India…Ram is the leader and Ram is the policy. Ram is eternal. When Ram is honoured, its effect does not last for years or centuries, its effect is for thousands of years,” he said.

The Prime Minister said that the sunrise of January 22 has brought a wonderful glow.

“January 22, 2024, is not a date written on the calendar. It is the origin of a new time cycle,” he said.

PM Modi referred to the legal dispute over Ram Janambhoomi in Ayodhya which lasted decades and expressed his gratitude to the judiciary “for doing justice” .

The temple of Lord Ram, synonymous with justice, was also built in a just manner…Ram Lalla will not stay in a tent now. He will stay in the grand temple,” he said.

PM Modi said while it is an occasion to celebrate, it is also a realisation of maturity of Indian society.

“Today the land of Ayodhya is asking some questions to all of us, to every Ram devotee, to every Indian. The grand temple of Shri Ram has been built, now what next? The wait of centuries is over, what next? On this occasion of today, will we bid farewell to the gods and divine spirits who have come to bless us and are watching us? No, not at all. Today I feel with a pure heart that the cycle of time is changing,” he said.

“It is a happy coincidence that our generation has been chosen as the architect of a timeless path. The generation after a thousand years will remember our efforts of nation-building today. That’s why I say – this is the time, this is the right time. From today, from this sacred time, we have to lay the foundation of India for the next thousand years,” he added.

The Prime Minister said devotees of Lord Ram are completely absorbed in this historic moment.

“The devotees of Prabhu Ram, in every corner of the country and the world, are deeply feeling this. Today our Ram has come…After waiting for centuries our Ram has arrived. After centuries of unprecedented patience, countless sacrifices, sacrifices and penance, our Lord Ram has arrived,” he said.

“This moment is divine, this moment is the holiest of all! After the Bhoomi Pujan of Ram Temple, enthusiasm and excitement were increasing every day in the entire country,” he added.

The PM also said that Lord Ram is connected to the soul of India.

“Lord Ram resides in the hearts of Indians. Today, Ayodhya has not only witnessed the Pran Pratishtha of the sacred idol of Prabhu Shri Ram, but also the ‘Pran Pratishtha’ of the unwavering faith in Indian culture manifested in the form of Prabhu Shri Ram. Today, what has happened in Ayodhya is also the ‘Pran Pratishtha’ of human values and the ‘Pran Pratishtha’ of the highest ideals!” he said.

PM Modi also sought forgiveness from Lord Ram for the delay in the construction of the temple.

“Today, I apologise to Lord Ram as something was lacking in our love and penance due to which this work (construction of Ram Temple) was not done for so many years. However, that gap has been bridged today and I am confident that Lord Ram will forgive us,” PM Modi said.

The Prime Minister walked into the temple premises with a silver ‘chattar’ (umbrella) placed on a red folded dupatta.

Wearing a cream-coloured kurta teamed up with a cream dhoti and patka, he took ‘Sankalp’ for the “Pran Pratishtha ceremony” and later moved to the sanctum sanctorum for the rituals.

RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat, Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath were also present in the sanctorum during the rituals. Devotees and guests chanted ‘Jai Sri Ram’ during the ceremony. (ANI)
