Saurabh Defends Arrest Of Punjab Cong MLA In Drug Case

Delhi Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj on Tuesday defended the move by the AAP government in Punjab to have Congress leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira arrested over alleged connections with a drug smuggling racket, saying that the narcotic menace could have a devastating impact on the state’s youth.

Speaking to ANI on Tuesday, Bharadwaj said, “This matter had been in the high court earlier. Evidence (of the Congress leader’s link to the drug racket) had been presented before the high court as well. The evidence only serves to establish his connections with drug peddlers. Punjab’s youth are being addicted to drugs and spoilt.”

Advocating zero tolerance in such cases, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader added, “I don’t think even his party would stand with him as he has been found to be involved in a drug case,” he added.

Even as the ruling AAP and the Congress, which are partners in the Opposition bloc INDIA, were at loggerheads over the arrest of MLA Khaira in a drug case, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday said his party was not against any leader but ‘drug menace’, urging “all parties” to join them in the ongoing crackdown.

While the Congress labelled the arrest as a demonstration of the AAP’s vindictive politics, the ruling party said it was part of their “zero-tolerance policy” against drugs.

Earlier, in 2015, two cases blew the lid off a cross-border drug smuggling network in Punjab’s Fazilka. One of these cases led to the seizure of heroin, gold biscuits, weapons, cartridges, and Pakistani SIM cards while the other was of a fake passport racket being run in Delhi.

Nine smugglers, including Gurdev Singh, Manjit Singh, Harbans Singh, and Subhash Chander, were sentenced in October 2017 in connection with the Fazilka case.

According to the chargesheet filed in the case, Khaira was closely associated with Gurdev, the leader of the Fazilka drug smuggling racket, and is also accused to have sheltered him. The primary accusations against Khaira include supporting an international gang of smugglers, having sheltered him and receiving financial benefits from drug traffickers, and enjoying the proceeds of crime.

On February 16,, a Supreme Court bench of Justices BR Gavai and Vikram Nath quashed the summoning order against Khaira in the drug case. (ANI)

INDIA bloc Parliamentary meet

INDIA Bloc Assures Support For Women Reservation Bill

Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh on Wednesday expressing his concern over the implementation of Women’s Reservation Bill and urged the centre to implement the bill in 2024 if their intentions were clear. The AAP MP also assured the support of the INDIA bloc to the bill.

AAP MP Sanjay Singh said, “This is definitely not a Women’s Reservation Bill, this is ‘Mahila Bewakoof Banao’ Bill. We have been saying this because none of the promises made by them have been fulfilled ever since PM Modi came to power. This is another ‘jumla’ brought by them…If you want to implement the Bill, AAP stands with you completely but implement it in 2024. Do you think the women of the country are fools? Anti-women BJP has brought one more ‘jumla’ in the name of the Bill. Women of the country, political parties understand these election tactics. So, we say that if their intentions are clear, implement it in 2024…”

MP Sanjay Singh said that in the Women’s Reservation Bill introduced by the UPA in 2010 there was no such conditions that the bill would be implemented in 15 years or 20 years and delimitation would be conducted.

Sanjay Singh said, “If the centre is serious about the Women’s Reservation Bill then the time limit clause should be removed and it should be implemented in 2024. INDIA alliance meeting is going to be held and we will discuss the details soon.”

However, the AAP MP has assured that the INDIA alliance members will vote in favour of the bill after voicing their opposition to certain clauses.

“The INDIA alliance members have agreed to question the Government’s intent on the bill in the house, we will also oppose the fact that the implementation of the bill is being delayed. However, during the voting on the bill we will vote in favour of the bill” said Sanjay Singh.

Earlier ahead of the discussion on the Women’s Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha today, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said that discussion on the bill will be held throughout the day and it has nothing to do with politics.

Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal introduced the bill in the first sitting of Lok Sabha in the new Parliament building on Tuesday. Arjun Ram Meghwal said that once the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam is passed, the number of seats for women in Lok Sabha will increase to 181. (ANI)

Haryana Will Soon Get Benefits Of AAP Freebies: Kejriwal Tells Khattar

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday responded to the remarks of his Haryana counterpart, Manohar Lal Khattar on ‘freebies’.

Speaking about the upcoming Haryana assembly polls in 2024, CM Kejriwal claimed that the Haryana people will soon get the benefit of freebies.

Taking to ‘X’ (formerly known as Twitter), the Delhi CM said, “Khattar Sahab! We provide free and world-class education and health services in Delhi. We provide free electricity and water around the clock. We have started these facilities in Punjab, too and the public is happy with us. Soon, the people of Haryana will also get the benefit of freebies”.

Earlier on Saturday, Haryana CM Khattar interacted with the beneficiaries of CM’s Pariwar Antyodaya scheme and targetted the Aam Aadmi Party alleging that there are parties that raise slogans like, ‘Get this for free, Get that for free’.

“There are many parties that raise slogans like ‘get this for free, get that for free’… Instead of inculcating the habit of freebies, our government’s priority is to fulfill the needs of a working person, enhance his skills and develop him”, CM Khattar said.

It is worth mentioning that during the Gujarat assembly polls, the Bharatiya Janata Party accused the AAP of resorting to ‘freebies’ and alleged that the latter indulges in ‘Revdi politics’, (freebies politics).

A war of words between the AAP and the BJP emerged during the Gujarat polls when the former, sticking to its pattern of promises, promised government schools, free electricity, access to water, and free healthcare in Gujarat, if voted to power. (ANI)

Delhi Lieutenant Governor (LG)

If Someone Sees Shivling, I Have No Objection: Delhi LG On Fountains Near Airport

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena said on Saturday that fountains installed on the way to Delhi airport ahead of the G20 summit are art pieces made by an artisan from Rajasthan and “not Shivling” and he has no objection if someone sees ‘Shivling’ in it.

He said there should be no controversy concerning the fountains amid complaints by Aam Aadmi Party.

Vinai Kumar Saxena told ANI in an interview that India is a unique country where rivers and trees are worshipped and the focus at this time should be on giving the best experience to delegates visiting Delhi for the G20 summit.

“Those are art pieces made by an artisan from Rajasthan, not ‘Shivling’. Ours is a unique country where rivers and trees are worshipped. If someone sees ‘shivling’ in it (‘Shivling-shaped’ fountains), then it is very good; I have no objection to it, but there should be no controversy…,” he said.

AAP MLAs Friday wrote to the Special Commissioner, Delhi Police, and complained against LG VK Saxena and other government officials for “outraging the religious sentiments of Hindus by installing 18 Shivling fountains for decoration/beautification” purposes near Palam technical area in the national capital.

AAP leader Sanjay Singh had earlier sought an apology from the Bharatiya Janata Party over the decision and alleged that the LG had “insulted” Shivling.

The G20 Summit will be hosted in the national capital on September 9 and 10. (ANI)

Pointing towards the opposition benches, he asked what has changed that they were taking part in the bill concerning Delhi.

“The opposition’s priority is to save their alliance. The opposition is not worried about Manipur…Everyone is talking about the rights of a state. But which state? Delhi is not a state but a Union Territory…The Parliament has the right to make laws for Delhi…,” he said.  (ANI)

Arvind Kejriwal

We Have Gathered To Save Country From Hatred: Kejriwal’s Hit At Modi

Aam Adami Party (AAP) national convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday said that the leaders of the like-minded parties came to Karnataka’s Bengaluru to save the country from “hatred”.

“In the last 9 years, PM Modi could have done a lot of things but he destroyed all the sectors. We have gathered here not for ourselves but to save the country from hatred…” Arvind Kejriwal said while addressing a press conference after the Opposition meeting held in Bengaluru.
I.N.D.I.A – the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance — is what the united opposition front will be known as 26 parties participating at the crucial meet in Bengaluru decided today.

With the Congress assuring AAP of its support for the Bharatiya Janata Party government’s ordinance nullifying the Supreme Court’s order to give the Delhi government larger control over the bureaucracy in the state, the AAP party decided to attend the meeting.

AAP had attended the Patna meet on June 23 but had skipped the press conference and later threatened to boycott the key Opposition meeting scheduled on Tuesday.

On June 23, the AAP issued a statement saying that until the Congress publicly denounces the “black ordinance” and declares that all 31 of its RS MPs will oppose the ordinance in the Rajya Sabha, it will be difficult for AAP to participate in future meetings of like-minded parties where the Congress is a participant.

“A total of 15 parties are attending the like-minded party meeting in Patna, out of which 12 have representation in the Rajya Sabha. Except for the Indian National Congress, all other 11 parties, which have representation in the Rajya Sabha, have clearly expressed their stand against the Black Ordinance and announced that they would oppose it in the Rajya Sabha,” the party said.

However, on July 16, putting an end to speculations over its stand on the Centre’s ordinance related to the control of administrative services in Delhi, the Congress, in a big boost for the Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government announced its support to the AAP.

On Tuesday, while addressing the media after the meeting, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge said, “The BJP wants to destroy democracy, Constitution, using autonomous bodies like CBI, ED, vigilance all such institutions against opposition party leaders and workers. This is a grave situation. We have come together to save this situation. How to save the country and the people of the country — this is the issue before us.”

Asked who will lead the alliance, Kharge said, “We are making a coordination committee of 11. At that meeting in Mumbai, we will decide on who the 11 will be, who the Convenor will be, etc. These are small things”. (ANI)
