AAP leader Satyendar Jain

Early Hearing On Bail Plea Of Jain In Money Laundering Case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court at Rouse Avenue Court complex on Thursday allowed the plea for an early hearing on the bail application of Delhi Minister Satyender Jain in a money laundering case.

The matter has been listed for tomorrow. He was arrested in May this year.
Special CBI judge Vikas Dhull allowed the plea for an early hearing on the bail application of Satyender Jain.

The Delhi High court on October 1, dismissed the plea of Jain challenging the trial court order transferring his money laundering case to another judge. The question is not of integrity or uprightness of the Judge but of apprehension in the mind of a party (ED), the High Court noted.

Thereafter, Jain moved to the Supreme Court. Later the plea was withdrawn.

Satyender Jain had challenged the order of September 23, 2022, passed by the Principal District and Sessions Judge transferring his money laundering case from one court to another court.

His bail plea hearing was transferred to the court of Vikas Dhull from another court after hearing the application moved by the Enforcement Directorate.

Justice Yogesh Khanna noted in the order that the question is not of integrity or uprightness of the Judge but of apprehension in the mind of a party (ED).

Justice Khanna while passing the order observed that the facts show that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) did not merely harbor an apprehension of bias but had acted upon it as well by rushing to the HC and therefore the apprehension cannot be said to be flimsy or not reasonable.

The court has further observed, “the apprehensions raised were not at a belated stage, as the request for an independent medical evaluation were consistently made.”

The court held that the district judge while transferring the case has considered all these aspects and therefore does not suffer from any illegality and does not require any interference.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had contended that the doctors and jail authorities were managed as the accused earlier had the Health and Jail Department portfolio as Delhi cabinet Minister.

The ED had initiated the money-laundering investigation on the basis of a First Information Report (FIR) registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on August 24, 2017.

The FIR was registered under Section 13(2) and 13(1)(e) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 against Satyendar Jain, Poonam Jain, Ajit Prasad Jain, Sunil Kumar Jain, Vaibhav Jain, Ankush Jain. (ANI)

Nyoma airfield LAC

Nyoma Airfield Near LAC To Get Upgrade, BRO To Build New Runway

Amid reports of China building new military infrastructure on its side, India is soon going to begin the construction work for upgrading its Nyoma advanced landing ground for fighter aircraft operations less than 50 kilometres from the LAC in eastern Ladakh, said Indian Army officials on Thursday.
The Nyoma airfield has been used for the transportation of men and materiel during the ongoing stand-off with China and has seen operations of Chinook heavy-lift choppers and C-130J Special Operations aircraft.

“The ALG is going to be soon upgraded for fighter aircraft operations as most of the required clearances and approvals have come already. As per plans, the construction of the new airfield and the military infrastructure would be done by the Border Roads Organisation,” senior defence officials told ANI.

The capability of operating fighter aircraft from this area would strengthen the Air Force’s ability to tackle any misadventures by the adversary in a faster way.

The inauguration of the construction work is expected to begin soon in the eastern Ladakh sector after the clearances by the Modi government in the area, they said.

India has been considering multiple options for developing airfields in eastern Ladakh including Daulat Beg Oldi (DBO), Fukche and Nyoma which are at a distance of a few minutes from the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China.

The Nyoma Advanced Landing Ground (ALG) has seen operations of the Apache attack helicopters, Chinook heavy-lift helicopters and the Garud special forces operations from Mi-17 helicopters.

Recently, IAF Group Captain Ajay Rathi explained the importance of having an advanced landing ground such as Nyoma.

“Nyoma ALG has strategic importance due to its close proximity to the Line of Actual Control. It bridges the critical gap between Leh airfield and the LAC enabling quick movement of men and material in eastern Ladakh, overcoming terrain friction,” Rathi had said.

The Nyoma airbase Chief Operations Officer said the ALG will “further help in quicker access to the heights and sustenance operations thereafter. The air operations infrastructure at Nyoma enhances the operations capability of forces.”

The Air Force also has deployed the Igla man-portable air defence missiles to tackle any aerial incursion by any adversary aircraft. The Indian Air Force has been regularly deploying fighter aircraft including the Rafale and MiG-29s to carry out operations in eastern Ladakh where there has been disengagement of troops at multiple locations

The Chinese have been amassing troops since 2020 and carried out aggression in the garb of an exercise after which the Indian security forces retaliated in equal measure and checked the Chinese aggression there. The Indian Air Force is also continuing to maintain its assets in Leh along with a massive upgrade of capabilities in the area. (ANI)

Xi Tightens His Grip Over China

Xi Jinping More Powerful Than Mao Zedong: Analysts

Chinese Communist Party leader Xi Jinping’s historic third term as China’s President will likely see more hardline policies out of Beijing on the economy, foreign relations, and human rights, analysts told Washington-based Radio Free Asia (RFA).

On Sunday, Communist Party Xi Jinping presented the Party’s new central leadership at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, where he secured a historic third term as the country’s top leader.
Top aides of Xi were promoted in Communist Party of China’s Politburo Standing Committee but no woman could find a place in the top leadership position for the first time in years, according to the newly released list by state media.

Through the 20th National Congress, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has demonstrated that Chairman Xi Jinping is the nucleus of power in China and that none can dare stand against him.

Xi had packed the Politburo Standing Committee with his close allies showing that he can now act as he pleases, according to Germany-based ethnic Mongolian rights activist Xi Haiming.

“This is the last madness,” Xi Haiming told a recent political forum in Taiwan. He said, “Xi has emerged, naked, as Emperor Xi, as a dictator.”

“Too many people in China are lining up to be his eunuchs, kowtowing to him, waiting for the emperor to ascend to the throne,” he was quoted as saying by RFA.

China is now firmly back in the Mao era, according to a Chinese journalist, who refused to be identified due to fear of reprisals.

“This 20th National Congress is the beginning of the Mao era,” Geng said. “People used to say it was the 9th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party that was bad because it hailed Mao Zedong as the red sun.”

According to analyst Wen Zhigang, the old system of “collective leadership” is well and truly dead.

“Collective leadership no longer exists, and the leader sits, aloof … a leader of the people who is above the party,” Wen said.

According to senior China researcher Wu Guoguang, Xi has more say over who gets to be premier — his second-in-command Li Qiang — than the late supreme leader Mao Zedong did.

“Xi Jinping wields greater power to appoint his preferred premier than Mao Zedong did,” Wu told RFA. (ANI)

Rajnath Singh Attends ‘Shaurya Diwas’ In JK’s Budgam

On the 76th Infantry Day, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday attended the ‘Shaurya Diwas’ programme organized by the Indian Army in Budgam.

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha was also present at the programme. Singh also visited an exhibition by the Indian Army on the occasion.

Infantry Day is observed as a remembrance of the first military event of independent India, when the Indian Army repelled the first attack on Indian soil on October 27, 1947, in the Kashmir valley.

The victory was accomplished by the personnel of the First Battalion of the Sikh Regiment.

On the 76th Infantry Day, the Defence Minister also extended greetings and warm wishes to the courageous infantry personnel and their families.

“On the 76th Infantry Day, greetings and warm wishes to our courageous infantry personnel and their families. Indian infantry has been associated with utmost courage and professionalism. The nation salutes their bravery, sacrifice and service,” tweeted Singh.

Rajnath Singh has been the second top Union minister to visit Jammu and Kashmir this month.

Earlier, Union Home minister Amit Shah was on a three-day visit to the Union Territory from October 4.

Later in the day, the Defence Minister will reach Leh on a two-day visit to the Union Territory of Ladakh.

The Indian Army celebrates October 27 every year as the ‘Infantry Day’, as it was on this day that the 1st Battalion of the Sikh Regiment landed at Srinagar airbase and displayed resoluteness and extraordinary courage to thwart the evil designs of the Pakistan Army, who had invaded Kashmir with the help of tribal raiders in 1947.

That is why every year on October 27, the Indian Army celebrates it as ‘Infantry Day.

This year both the Indian Army and the Air Force are going to celebrate this special day as “Shaurya Diwas” because Thursday is also the golden jubilee celebration of the Indian Air Force’s Kashmir Air Base. (ANI)

Poverty

Pushing Back The Index, Not Hunger

This ado over India finding a lowly rank of 107 out of 121 countries in the much acclaimed Global Hunger Index (GHI) compiled jointly by Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhilfe is entirely avoidable. Understandably the powers that be in New Delhi wallowing in an unrestrained promotion of the country achieving the highest rate of GDP (gross domestic product) growth among all major economies in the world soon after overcoming the Covid-19 pandemic economic dislocations were shaken to the core when the recently released GHI report for 2022 revealed that all the neighbouring countries have fared better than India in nourishment and child health and mortality.

Whatever way New Delhi reacts to the report, the credentials of the two agencies based in Ireland and Germany cannot be questioned. Yes exceptions are taken about the methodology of inquiry, particularly relating to children – incidentally, three of the four criteria for determining hunger relate to how well or badly the children are faring in terms of child stunting, child wasting and child mortality. But identical criteria have been applied to all the 121 countries covered in the report. Hasn’t UNICEF said that the time between pregnancy and first three years when human brain is highly susceptible to environmental influences is critical for a child’s growth and development? For children to become healthy adults, they need nourishing food, nurturing care and health services. It is on this premise that GHI focus on child care will readily find justification.

GHI report claims that based on marshalling of sufficient data and its processing, the ranking and scores of the countries were given. As it would happen, the report shows India with a score of 29.1 finds itself in a zone of “serious hunger” and also not far from “alarming hunger.” Let’s see how have India’s neighbouring countries fared in terms of ranking and index score? China, which over the last many years gave priority to universal nourishment and child health, finds a place among the best performing 17 countries with a low GHI score of less than five indicating a low level of hunger.

Leave alone China, the landlocked Nepal ranks 81 in the 2022 GHI table with an index score of 19.1. The respective figures for Bangladesh are 84 and 19.6 and for Pakistan 99 and 26.1. Why only the countries with which we share borders, Sri Lanka has a ranking of 64 with index score of 13.6 indicating moderate hunger. Even while it is plagued by unending political turmoil, Myanmar got a ranking of 71 with index score of 15.6 also denoting moderate hunger. The only country in the region with a ranking and index score worse than India’s is war ravaged Afghanistan. This is no consolation for India, which nurses the ambition of becoming a developed country by 2047.

But will India by then be able to clear the threshold of high-income country in terms of economic indicators. The World Bank has recently updated the per capita income criteria for high-income countries to more than $13,205. Compared to this, India’s per capita income in 2021 was $2,277.4. What has particular significance for poverty and hunger is encapsulated in a report by the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) saying that a total of 56 million Indians slipped into poverty during the 2020 pandemic. The income destroying Indian experience as that of many other countries of the poor such as daily wage earners because of Coronavirus pandemic proved to be a “historically large shock” to poverty reduction campaign, says a World Bank report. In the absence of a national consumption expenditure survey following the junking of the 2017-18 report (conducted by National Sample Survey since merged with National Statistical Office) on quality concerns, it remains a subject of guess as to how many Indians are surviving below the poverty line.

ALSO READ: Pulling India Out Of Poverty Pit

A dispassionate reading of the GHI report in the above context would have helped in avoiding the controversy. The report gains in authenticity since it makes extensive use of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS), 2019-21, authored by the health and family welfare ministry. Over 600,000 households feature in the survey. Author and columnist Chetan Bhagat, who has taken pains to make a thorough reading of GHI report and NFHS-5 report writes: “In this 700-plus page survey (NFHS-5), there is data for India’s child stunting and child wasting rates. It says 36% of Indian kids are stunted… and 19% of the children are wasted.” Are these high figures of stunting and wasting of Indian children because of WHO guidance prescribing that the median height for a five-year old boy should be 110.3cm? The two standard deviation point is 101.6cm and any child found below that height is described as stunted. Bhagat rightly raises the point whether a single standard should be applied to all children across the world or “ethnicity, race and genetics” of Indian children be considered when assessing their nourishment and health.

How has India come out in the latest GHI report? It says as the percentage of people in the country not having access to sufficient calories is up from 14.6 during 2018-20 to 16.3 in the period 2019-21, 224.3 million Indians out of a global total of 828 million are labelled undernourished. Child wasting is described as the share of less than five year old children who weigh less for their height showing “acute under-nutrition.” On this also, India has come out badly in the report since the child wasting rate has risen to 19.3% from 17.15% in 2000. Child mortality indicating children dying before their fifth birthday is often caused by a “fatal mix of inadequate nutrition and unhealthy environment” they find themselves in. Since 2014, child mortality is down here to 3.3% from 4.6% and child stunting to 35.5% from 38.7%. According to GHI, there are four kinds of hunger prevailing in the world from low to moderate to serious to alarming and to extremely alarming and India with a score of 29.1 finds itself in the serious category.

Expectedly, New Delhi has rubbished the GHI report saying: “The report is not only disconnected from ground reality but also chooses to deliberately ignore efforts made by the Government to ensure food Security for the population especially during the Covid Pandemic. Taking a one-dimensional view, the report lowers India’s rank based on the estimate of Proportion of Undernourished (PoU) population for India at 16.3%. The FAO estimate is based on ‘Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES)’ Survey Module conducted through Gallop World Poll, which is an ‘opinion poll’ based on ‘8 questions’ with a sample size of 3,000 respondents. The data collected from a minuscule sample for a country of India’s size through FIES has been used to compute the PoU value for India which is not only wrong and unethical, it also reeks of obvious bias. The publishing agencies of the Global Hunger report…  have evidently not done their due diligence before releasing the report.”

Challenging the way the two agencies set out to measure hunger, it says the report is to be faulted on “serious methodological issues.” When three of the four indicators used for calculating the hunger index are related to child health, they cannot be in any way representative of how the entire population is faring in terms of wellbeing. New Delhi has also taken exception to the very small sample size of 3,000 for making an estimate of PoU population. Whatever shortcomings the government may see in GHI findings, the fact will not be denied that it has a big task in hand to reduce hunger and give the children of poor families a better health to allow them to grow into healthy and productive citizens.

Antony Blinken Arrives In India For G20 Meeting

When Blinken Spoke About Hindu God Hanuman At the White House

At the Diwali reception in the White House, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken highlighted the importance of religious freedom as a fundamental American value and informed that a 500-year-old stolen statue of Hanuman, a Hindu deity, was returned to the Indian government earlier this year.

“Just this past February, our colleagues at the Mission in Australia, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Indian law enforcement agents, recovered a 500-year-old stolen statue of Hanuman, a Hindu deity, and returned it to the Indian Government,” said US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Union Minister G Kishan Reddy had earlier acknowledged the same and tweeted, “500-year-old Lord Hanuman bronze idol stolen from Tamil Nadu temple, to be repatriated back to The stolen idol retrieved by US Homeland Security was handed over to @HCICanberra by US CDA Under the leadership of PM Sh@narendramodi the repatriation of our heritage continues.”

He also stressed that the USA shows support for religious diversity by helping to preserve vital pieces of cultural heritage around the world.

His remarks came as he hosted the in-person Diwali reception following a gap of two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This event, which follows the White House’s biggest Diwali event on Monday, received guests from the diplomatic and religious communities, from the private sector and from all across civil society.

“Simply to you: it’s an honour – an honour to host you at the State Department for this first in-person Diwali since before the pandemic,” Blinken said in his remarks at the Diwali reception.

“Over the past few days, Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists have decorated their homes with rangoli; they’ve shared sweets; they’ve given thanks through pooja; they’ve lit sparklers. All around the world, from the streets of New Delhi to the parks of Kuala Lumpur, to the right down the street at the White House, people have gathered to share in the simple joy of being around friends and family,” he added.

Speaking to the diplomatic, and civil society members present at the reception, Blinken said they are playing an invaluable role in helping to connect the US with local populations abroad, and “by pushing us to do more to support religious freedom around the world.”

“We are honoured to host you. This is the first Diwali reception of this scale in the White House ever to be held. We have more Asian Americans than ever in history and we want to thank you for making the Diwali celebration a joyous part of American culture,” US President Joe Biden said during a reception to celebrate Diwali at the White House.

Wishing a happy Diwali to more than one billion Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and Buddhists celebrating Diwali, Biden thanked the Asian American community in the US for making the Diwali celebration a joyous part of American culture.

“As we host the official White House Diwali reception, we are honoured to light the Diya surrounded by members of the most diverse Administration in American history–led by Vice President Kamala Harris, the first Black American and South Asian American to become Vice President,” he added.

Biden thanked for the optimism, courage, and empathy demonstrated by the incredible South Asian community all across America.

Diwali is an auspicious festival that symbolizes the triumph of good over evil. Spectacular lights, firecrackers, irresistible traditional sweets and exchanging gifts mark the festival. (ANI)

Global Emission Will Peak in 2025

Global Emission Will Peak in 2025: Intl Energy Agency

The International Energy Agency (IEA) on Thursday released its World Energy Outlook 2022 report, which stated that global emissions will peak in 2025.

Based on the latest energy data and market developments, this year’s WEO explores key questions about the crisis, including setbacks for clean energy transitions, government responses on energy markets and possible risks ahead on the path to net zero emissions.

“In the Announced Pledges Scenario (APS), the commitments in the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) bring about a faster reduction in emissions: global emissions peak before 2025 and fall to 31.5 Gt CO2 in 2030, which is around 15per cent lower than in the STEPS,” the report said.

IEA energy outlook report’s scenario is based on prevailing policy settings that see a definitive peak in global demand for fossil fuels.

“Coal demand peaks in the next few years, natural gas demand reaches a plateau by the end of the decade, and oil demand reaches a high point in the mid-2030s before falling slightly. From 80per cent today – a level that has been constant for decades – the share of fossil fuels in the global energy mix falls to less than 75per cent by 2030 and to just above 60 per cent by mid-century,” the report said.

The World Energy Outlook report states that the global energy crisis sparked by the Ukraine conflict is having far-reaching implications for entire economies, prompting short-term responses from governments as well as a deeper debate about the ways to promote energy security.

“This is a global crisis, but Europe is the main theatre in which it is playing out, and natural gas is centre stage – especially during the coming northern hemisphere winter,” it says.

High energy prices are causing a huge transfer of wealth from consumers to producers, back to the levels seen in 2014 for oil, but entirely unprecedented for natural gas. High fuel prices account for 90 per cent of the rise in the average costs of electricity generation worldwide, with natural gas alone for more than 50 per cent.

“Price and economic pressures mean that the number of people without access to modern energy is rising for the first time in a decade. Around 75 million people who recently gained access to electricity are likely to lose the ability to pay for it, and 100 million people may revert to the use of traditional biomass for cooking,” it says.

The report continues that there remain huge uncertainties over how this energy crisis will evolve and for how long fossil fuel prices will remain elevated, and the risks of further energy disruption and geopolitical fragmentation are high. (ANI)
