Bangladesh May Replace China

Bangladesh May Replace China As Europe’s Apparel Source

As China witnessing a decrease in its share of trade due to economic slowdown due to Covid implications, Bangladesh may overtake it as the source of most of the European Union’s (EU) apparel, reported The Daily Star.

According to Ahsan H Mansur, Executive Director of the Policy Research Institute, primarily it will be for the shortage of skilled labour (China’s demography as its population is decreasing) and secondly for Bangladesh producing high-end value-added garment items, that it may overtake China with regard to exports to the EU in the near future.

Even though China continues to hold the title of being the largest apparel supplier to the EU, the penetration of Bangladeshi garment items has been growing with rising demand for basic and value-added garments, reported The Daily Star.

Apparel shipments to the EU from Bangladesh grew by 41.76 percent in the January-October period of last year to USD 19.40 billion, helping to retain its position as the second largest garment exporter to the world’s largest trade bloc after China.

China has been losing its global apparel market share over the last couple of years mainly because of a shortage of skilled workforce, withdrawal of foreign investments, and an increase in production costs, reported The Daily Star.

Notably, the Chinese industrial production base is shifting from manufacturing to heavy and sophisticated technological gadgets involving mobiles and home appliances.

This is resulting in work orders being shifted from China to other Asian countries like Bangladesh, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, India, and Pakistan.

Moreover, with workers quitting garment factories for higher salaries in the production of sophisticated items, Chinese garment manufacturers are experiencing a shortage in their skilled workforce, reported The Daily Star.

Also, garment manufacturers are unable to pay higher salaries as international clothing retailers and brands are unwilling to pay more for garment items.

In 2015, Bangladesh’s share in the global apparel market was 5.9 percent, and based on the country’s garment export data of 2021, the percentage has gone up to 6.5 percent.

The region-wise analysis also shows a decline in garment shipments from China.

For instance, in 2015, the market share of China in the EU apparel segment was 37 percent and in 2022, the percentage declined to 28.4 percent, according to a study by Sheng Lu, an associate professor of apparel and textiles at the University of Delaware.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s market share in the EU increased to 24 percent in 2022 from 18.5 percent in 2017, according to the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).

As per local exporters, another reason for work orders being diverted from China to Bangladesh is the recent tariff war between the US and China as international retailers and brands want a sustainable sourcing destination, reported The Daily Star.

Moreover, the remediation of garment factories with recommendations of the Accord and Alliance, two international inspection agencies, also fortified workplace safety measures in Bangladesh.

This ultimately brightened the image of the country and the sector itself for which international retailers and brands are coming up with increasing volumes of work orders.

Bangladesh is also shifting its production base to high-end value-added garment items from basic items, reported The Daily Star.

The local manufacturers are grabbing a bigger market share of garment items made from man-made fibers to obtain better prices and more work orders from international retailers and brands.

Over the last four and a half decades, the capacity of Bangladesh’s garment industry has also grown a lot, enabling it to cater to any quantity of work orders.

Not only this, the country’s primary textile sector, which includes spinning, dyeing, finishing, knitting, weaving, and sizing, has witnessed investments worth over USD 20 billion.

The primary textile sector is acting as the garment industry’s main supplier of raw materials locally, reported The Daily Star.

Moreover, work orders have also been recently shifting from other countries like India, Pakistan, South Korea, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Ethiopia, and Cambodia as they are incapable of catering to orders for large volumes at competitive prices.

Bangladesh is already overtaking China in terms of exporting denim to the EU, said Faruque Hassan, President of the BGMEA.

“I am hopeful that we will overtake China in other product categories as well in the near future,” he told The Daily Star over the phone. (ANI)

International Monetary Fund (IMF) requested additional information regarding the budget from Pakistan

IMF Demands More Details Of Pakistan Budget

Ahead of the beginning of virtual negotiations, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) requested additional information regarding the budget from Pakistan, as the country urgently needs to generate USD 10 billion in foreign loans, Geo News reported.

A government official said the remaining loan repayment requirements and external financing of managing the current account deficit to the tune of USD 8 to USD 10 billion cannot be raised of the stalled IMF programme.

Meanwhile, the government is all set to table its plan to erase the circular debt of the gas sector before the upcoming meeting of the federal cabinet by hiking gas tariffs and bringing changes in the existing slabs to fulfil the IMF condition.

Right now, the IMF is the only door for Pakistan to unlock its problem regarding the financial crisis. Earlier, Pakistan shared the contours of areas for accomplishing the pending 9th review under the USD 7 billion Extended Fund Facility (EFF).

On other hand, Pakistan’s near-term challenge has risen sharply as Islamabad will have to secure fresh loans of USD 10 billion in the remaining five months (Feb-June) period to avert default, Geo News reported.

Against this backdrop, the government sent out SOS (Save Our Soul) to the IMF for reviving the programme that has been stalled since last November. Since then the country has been on a slippery slope to reaching the brink of total economic collapse.

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) in its latest monetary policy conceded that near-term challenges for the external sector have risen despite the policy-induced contraction in the current account deficit during the first half of FY23.

“The fresh loans requirements of USD 8 to USD 10 billion cannot be managed without blessings of the revival of the IMF programme,” a source quoted the SBP’s data stated while talking to The News on Monday.

According to official data, Pakistan was required to pay back USD 23 billion in the current fiscal year 2022-23 out of which it had already paid back USD 15 billion in the shape of external debt servicing. Out of USD 15 billion in debt repayments, the government repaid USD 9 billion while securing a rollover of $6 billion in the first half of the current fiscal year.

Now there is a remaining repayment requirement standing at USD 8 billion in the second half (Jan-June) period of the current fiscal year. The government has obtained a commitment to get a rollover of USD 3 billion from the bilateral creditor coming March 2023, reported Geo News.

“On external debt repayment, there is the exposure of USD 5 billion which has so far remained unfulfilled, increasing exposure and risk for the country,” said the official. (ANI)

Three Chinese companies - Quectel, Fibocom and China Mobile - already have 54 percent of the global market in devices and 75 percent by connectivity

China Spying On You Via Smart Bulb, Fridge Or Car: Report

China is watching you via smart bulbs, fridges, cars and credit cards by “weaponizing” microchips embedded in them, reported Asian Lite International.

More specifically the threat revolves around four areas: national security, economic prosperity, privacy, and values and human rights.

Three Chinese companies – Quectel, Fibocom and China Mobile – already have 54 percent of the global market in devices and 75 percent by connectivity. Customers of the three Chinese firms include computing firms Dell, Lenovo, HP and Intel, carmaker Tesla and card payments firm Sumup.

Like all Chinese firms, they must hand over data to the Chinese government if ordered to, which means the Chinese Communist Party can get access to as many devices as they want, reported Asian Lite International.

Devices with modules include: laptop computer; voice-controlled smart speaker; smart watches; smart energy meter; fridges, light bulbs and other appliances that can be controlled via the app; body-worn police cameras; doorbell cameras and security cameras; Bank card payment machines, cars and even hot tubs, reported Asian Lite International.

The modules collect data and then transmit it via 5G networks, giving China the opportunity to monitor the movements of intelligence targets including people, weapons and supplies, and to use the devices for industrial espionage. Millions of them are already in use in the UK.

“Trojan horse” technology poses a “widespread” threat to Britain’s national security, according to a report sent to the British government by Charles Parton, a former diplomat who advised parliament on Beijing.

Parton spent 22 years of his diplomatic career working in or in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, and has advised the Foreign Office and the European Union on Chinese affairs, as well as being Special Adviser to the Commons Foreign Affairs Committee on China.

The report says ministers have completely failed to understand the threat posed by the “widespread presence” of modules known as cellular IoT – a concern echoed by senior MPs, reported Asian Lite International.

It calls on ministers to take immediate action to ban Chinese-made cellular IoT from goods sold in the UK before it is too late.

“We are not yet aware of the threat,” said Charles Parton. “China has seen an opportunity to dominate this market, and if it does it can collect a lot of data as well as, also can make foreign countries dependent on them.”

“Dependency is dangerous when it is in the hands of the CCP, a potential, if not actual, hostile power,” added Preston.

The potential threat to national security is greater than that posed by Chinese-made components in mobile phone masts, prompting the government to ban Huawei products used in mobile infrastructure, a report published Monday by Washington-based consultancy OODA said.

Cellular IoTs – which stands for Internet of Things – are tiny modules used in everything from smart fridges to advanced weapons systems to monitor usage and feed data back to the owner and often the manufacturer using 5G.

The possibilities of espionage are huge. Coupled with artificial intelligence and machine learning to process massive amounts of data, the report suggests tracking US arms sales activities, reported Asian Lite International.

It can also serve to identify and address royal and diplomatic security officers, then monitor their cars during advance security sweeps to track visiting ministers.

Even innocuous applications such as agricultural machinery, which also use the equipment, can help the Chinese find weaknesses in Western supply chains, such as poor harvests of a particular crop, then undercut British suppliers. Seizing market share, making the West more dependent on Chinese exports.

Allowing China to form a monopoly on the manufacture of the equipment – which is subsidized by the Chinese state to make them cheaper than Western competitors – would leave the West entirely dependent on China for the supply of the strategically important component, reported Asian Lite International.

The report by OODA recommended a full audit of government assets to replace equipment where necessary and suggested that companies operating in sensitive sectors like defence be asked to complete the work by the end of 2025. (ANI)

Vinesh and yogeshwar slams

‘Not Consulted’: Wrestlers Say Unhappy With Probe Panel

India’s ace wrestlers Sakshee Malikkh, Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat and Sarita Mor on Tuesday expressed their disappointment over not being consulted before the Oversight Committee was formed and said that they were assured that they would be consulted before the formation.

The Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports announced on Monday that the oversight committee has been formed to probe into the sexual harassment allegations levelled against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and its chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. Boxing great and Olympic medalist Mary Kom will head the five-member Oversight Committee.

“We were assured that we would be consulted before the Oversight Committee was formed. It is very sad that we were not even consulted before the formation of this committee. @narendramodi @AmitShah @ianuragthakur,” Vinesh Phogat wrote in a tweet.

Other star wrestlers, Sakshee Malikkh and Bajrang Punia tweeted the same on their official Twitter handles.

The announcement of the commitment was made by Sports Minister Anurag Thakur on Monday. Thakur announced on Monday that boxer Mary Kom will be heading the oversight committee formed to probe into the allegations levelled against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and its chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and other coaches.

“Oversight Committee has been formed today. Mary Kom will head the Oversight Committee. For the coming month, the committee will investigate the allegations put up by the wrestlers,” Thakur told the media in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh.

“Assistant Secretary WFI was sacked and an oversight committee will begin an impartial probe so that everything gets clear,” Anurag Thakur said.

Meanwhile, the Wrestling Federation of India’s (WFI) Annual General Body Meeting (AGM), which was supposed to start at 10 am on Sunday in Ayodhya, was called off amid the ongoing battle between the wrestlers and its governing body in the country.

Following the wrestlers’ protest, this meeting was seen as being of utmost importance. The development comes after the central government on Saturday evening suspended WFI Assistant Secretary Vinod Tomar. Along with this, the activities of WFI were immediately banned till the completion of the investigation into the allegations of the wrestlers.

After late-night parleys with the protesting star grapplers, Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur on Friday night announced that Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh will ‘step aside’ from the day-to-day affairs of the WFI till the ‘oversight committee’ led by Olympian MC Mary Kom completes its inquiry into the allegations against him.

The probe committee has been given a mandate of four weeks to submit its report, the minister added. The wrestlers, who were protesting at Jantar Mantar, called off their protest after a meeting with Union Sports Minister Thakur on Friday. (ANI)

Kangana's 'Emergency'

Lights, Camera, Twitter: Kangana Ranaut Is Back In Action

Kangana Ranaut is back on Twitter. The actor-director returned to the microblogging site on Tuesday. Her comeback tweet read, “Hello everyone, it’s nice to be back here.”

She further tweeted a BTS (behind the scenes) video of her upcoming film ‘Emergency’ and the news has the fans excited!

She attached a caption with the BTS video – “And it’s a wrap !!! Emergency filming completed successfully… see you in cinemas on 20th October 2023”

The actor’s fans are quite ecstatic to have her back and many even replied to her tweet saying, “Welcome back!!!”

However, an official blue tick from her profile is missing, which fans are hoping will be attached to her account soon.

Last year, in May, Twitter “permanently suspended” Kangana’s account on Twitter after she posted a series of tweets making derogatory remarks on the recent results of the West Bengal assembly elections.

In her tweets, the ‘Queen’ star demanded President’s rule in West Bengal after Mamata Banerjee-led TMC defeated BJP in the state elections last year.

Taking to her Twitter handle, the National Award-winning actor used demeaning words against Mamata. In a series of controversial tweets, Kangana called her an “unleashed monster”.

According to a Twitter spokesperson, Kangana’s account was constantly provoking anger and violence, which was diminishing the value of global public conversation on the platform.

The Twitter rules under which the ‘Manikarnika’ star’s account was blocked stated, “Twitter’s purpose is to serve the public conversation. Violence, harassment and other similar types of behaviour discourage people from expressing themselves and ultimately diminish the value of global public conversation. Our rules are to ensure all people can participate in the public conversation freely and safely.”

After Elon Musk took over the reins of the micro-blogging site in October last year, Kangana expressed her willingness to be back on Twitter.

Ranaut’s Instagram stories were cascading her fan’s requests to retrieve the actor’s suspended account. (ANI)
