Sharad Hints At Bigger Role For State Prez Jayant Patil

Maharashtra Govt Increases Sharad Pawar’s Security After ‘Threat’

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Friday directed the state police to beef up security for Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar after his daughter and party MP Supriya Sule alleged that her father had received death threats from unknown miscreants.

“Sharad Pawar is a senior leader and we all respect him. His safety will be fully taken care of. Instructions have been given to the police to increase security, if necessary,” CM Shinde said.

“The government has taken serious note of the threat received by senior leader Sharad Pawar on Twitter and I have personally spoken to senior police officers and have given instructions for investigation,” he added.

Earlier, on Friday, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that although there are ideological differences with the NCP, issuing threats to a prominent Opposition leader won’t be tolerated.

“Maharashtra politics has a tall tradition. Although there are differences at the political and ideological level (between the BJP and the NCP), there are no differences of opinion in this matter. Threatening any (Opposition) leader or overstepping the bounds of civility while expressing oneself on social media will not be tolerated. In such cases, the police will act as per the law,” Fadnavis said.

On Friday, NCP MP Supriya Sule said she received a threat message, directed at her father on WhatsApp. Labelling the threat as ‘low-level politics’, she added that this should stop.

“I received a message on WhatsApp for Pawar Sahab. He was threatened through a website. So, I have come to the Police demanding justice. I urge Maharashtra Home Minister and Union Home Minister to act. Such actions represent low-level politics and should stop,” Sule told media persons.

She added that if justice isn’t done in such cases, the Centre and State Home departments will be held responsible. “The police have been informed. The Home Department also needs to intervene in this matter. Politics should be set aside in such cases,” she added. (ANI)

CEA Nageswaran on Indian Economy

Indian Economy Expected To Grow 6.5-7%: CEA Nageswaran

The Indian economy is expected to grow in a range of 6.5-7 per cent in the current financial year 2023-24 per cent, said Chief Economic Advisor Anantha Nageswaran.

The forecast was on the back of firm investments and rapid stride in digital transformation.

The CEA was speaking at the plenary session on ‘Mission USD 9 trillion Indian Economy by 2030’ organised by the industry body Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) as a part of industry interaction on ‘Building a Resilient Economy’ in Lucknow.

The Indian economy is in a state of autopilot and is bouncing back impressively after the pandemic, he said and hoped the 2022-23 GDP numbers could be revised upwards in the subsequent revisions.

As per the provisional estimates released by the National Statistical Office (NSO) recently, real GDP growth for 2022-23 stood at 7.2 per cent, higher than the 7 per cent projected.

Earlier, too, the CEA said he expected an upward revision in the 2022-23 GDP numbers going ahead.

Despite strong global headwinds and tighter domestic monetary policy tightening, various international agencies have forecasted India to be one of the fastest-growing economies in 2023-24, supported by robust growth in private consumption and sustained pick-up in private investment.

Sharing his optimism on the medium-term growth prospects of the Indian economy, Dr Nageswaran highlighted that the sound macroeconomic policies of the government, structural reforms such as GST, IBC etc, thrust on infrastructure and digitalisation have ensured that the Indian economy can grow for a longer period without running into the overheating situation.

“Between now and 2030, based on what we have done so far without even assuming that further reforms will be done, I can say that we have the potential to grow steadily between 6.5-7.0 per cent and if we add the additional reforms on skilling, factor market reforms among others, we can go up to 7.0-7.5 per cent and possibly even 8 per cent”, he further added.

According to the CEA, private consumption, which contributes close to 60 per cent to GDP, has surpassed the pre-pandemic trend in the third quarter of the last fiscal contributed by the release of pent-up demand and recovery in rural demand.

Going ahead, a lower inflation outlook due to easing commodity prices, and a good harvest will have a substantial impact on boosting consumption spending further.

On the sightings of green shoots of recovery in rural demand, the CEA highlighted that an increase in Minimum Support Price (MSP) for major crops and a rise in the MNREGA wage rate are expected to improve the financial security of rural households further and boost rural demand in the coming months.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday, approved the increase in Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for Kharif crops for the 2023-24 season. The increase was to the tune of 5-10 percent range. The government through its agencies procures crops from farmers from time to time at support prices. (ANI)

“The lottery was drawn for allotment in the auditorium of Allahabad Medical Association. After verification of 6030 applicants, 1590 were found eligible to participate in the lottery,” Arvind Kumar Chauhan Vice Chairman of Prayagraj Development Authority (PDA) said.

Shardul Thakur bradman record at the oval

Shardul Thakur Equals Bradman Record At The Oval

Shardul Thakur matched Sir Don Bradman’s record on Friday in the World Test Championship final against Australia as he became the third visiting batter with the most consecutive 50-plus scores at The Oval in Test format.

Shardul’s counterattacking 51(109) was his third consecutive 50-plus score at the Oval. In his last three matches during 2021-2023, the Indian allrounder has struck 57(36), 60(72) and 51(109). He broke Australia’s dominance in this feat and became the first batter to feature in this record.

Only two batters have managed to achieve this unique record before him. Sir Don Bradman scored three consecutive 50-plus scores during 1930-1934. While former Australian cricketer Allan Border achieved the same feat during 1985-1989.

Even as Ajinkya Rahane and Shardul Thakur managed to reignite India’s hope of making a comeback in the WTC final, Australian bowlers once again showcased their prowess, with skipper Pat Cummins dismissing Rahane at the beginning of the second session.

Rahane, who was in sight of what would have been a fine century on his return to the Indian red-ball team, fell for 89 (129). The right-hander, who had survived some close calls and anxious moments, eventually ran out of luck as Cameron Green took a stunning catch to send him back to the pavillion.

Umesh tried to play a cameo but Cummins made short work of him. Yadav fell for a score of 5(11). Thakur soon followed Rahane back to the shed as in trying to clear the boundary, he edged to wicketkeeper Alex Carey behind the stumps. Thakur’s counter-attacking knock came to an end for 51(109).

With Thakur gone, Shami went after the Australian pacers, striking two consecutive boundaries in the 67th over off Boland. His attacking knock was, however, short-lived as he was dismissed by the pacer for 13 (11).

The fall of this wicket saw the Indians being rolled over for 296 in 69.4 overs, trailing Australia by 173 runs.

The Australian left-handed opening duo of David Warner and Usman Khawaja stepped up to build on their 173-run advantage. However, the Aussies were rocked early as Siraj drew first blood, dismissing Warner for a score of 1(8). Marnus Labuschagne and Khwaja, however, survived the initial torrid spell, to take the Aussies to 23/1 in 11 overs. (ANI)

Actor Nimrat Kaur is being lauded for her performance in ‘School of Lies’.

Sharing what made her say yes to the show, Nimrat said, “I found Nandita in the beautiful writing of Aisha Annie Banerjee, I found her in the way that Avinash Arun envisioned her; he had a very clear vision of what this world was like and I made sure that I blended into this atmosphere where she’s kind of an insider, but an outsider.”

She added, “Be it her unconventional friendship with Varin’s character – Vikram or her own childhood demons, the way they come up and come through her real time events were very interesting to me. In the end, the tough choices she has to make and the decision she ends up making, the complexity of it was all so understated and just so subtly envisioned that I just had to walk that path and surrender myself there.”

Strict Action Against ‘Love Jihad’ Cases: Uttarakhand CM Dhami

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Friday said that the State government has called for a strict probe and action against the ‘love jihad’ cases. Dhami also mentioned that he will be chairing a high-level meeting with the Director General of Police and other officials on the issue.

“We have called for strict probe and action against love jihad cases. Today we will chair a high-level meeting also with DGP and other officials,” Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said.
Uttarkashi town in the State recently witnessed tensions over an alleged abduction attempt on a 14-year-old girl by two men, including one from the minority community, last month, police said. Both men have been subsequently arrested.

Earlier this week BJP MP Sadhvi Paragya hit the headlines for saying that Hindu girls were being tricked by Muslim boys. “Hindu girls are being tricked under a conspiratorial mission. A minor girl was killed in Delhi. Girls need to be alert, their life is not safe. Hindus do not conspire against anyone.”

Last month, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that the State government took the issue of ‘love jihad’, ‘religious conversion’ and promotion of ‘terrorist activities’ seriously and will not allow such practices in the State.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had also stated last month that ‘Love Jihad’ is an agenda of “undeclared terrorism” against humanity. His remarks came after watching the special screening of ‘The Kerala Story’, a movie that stirred up a political storm in the country.

Adityanath had said, “The Kerala Story draws the attention of the entire nation to ‘Love Jihad’. The entire society must be made aware of this menace. A commendable and brave effort has been made in this regard by the film’s producer, director, and the entire team.” (ANI)
