Union Minister Smriti Irani on Wednesday raised questions about Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s alleged meeting in the USA with Sunita Vishwanath, who is a member of an organisation owned by George Soros, allegedly involved in anti-India activities.
Irani asked why is Rahul Gandhi “hobnobbing” with those who are funded by George Soros as it is known to everyone what Soros intends to do. While levelling the allegation, Irani also produced a photograph before the media in which Rahul Gandhi can be seen sitting with Vishwanath. Former Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi went on a 10-day visit to USA from May 31 and participated in programs in three cities, San Francisco, Washington DC, and New York.
Regarding the Bharat Jodo Yatra, Irani slammed Congress for the presence of Global Vice President of the Open Society Foundation funded by George Soros in the Yatra who was seen accompanying Rahul Gandhi.
“Even in Bharat Jodo Yatra in Karnataka, the Global Vice President of the Open Society Foundation funded by George Soros was found accompanying Rahul Gandhi. What is extremely distressing is the link with the Islamic Circle of North America. Those in the public domain who will research how the registration process for NRI interaction with Rahul Gandhi in New York ensued will find contact of a man named Tazeem Ansari. He has an organisational link with Jamaat-e-Islami….”
Irrespective of all this till now Congress party has not denied the meeting between Gandhi and Sunita Vishwanath, said the union minister. (ANI)
The Prime Minister seems to have queried, seeking a response from the BJP chief, after his six-day lackluster tour of the US and Egypt, with 31 drones and metaphysical jet engines thrown in. In an equally lackluster tenure, without holding a single press conference, and without answering a single query from a journalist, except for the stooge media, he should have instead listened to the perceptive question by Sabrina Siddiqui in the White House press meet with Joe Biden. He would have, then, actually, not only rediscovered Nehru’s India and its original and authentic DNA, he would have also discovered what he has done to its wounded body and soul during his one-dimensional regime of a dictatorship camouflaged as democracy.
So what is happening in what is euphemistically called the largest democracy in India?
For one, the civil war is raging in the sensitive border state of Manipur, with the homes of ministers and BJP leaders being attacked routinely, women blockading the security forces, a huge lack of ration and basic amenities, everything shut down across the Imphal Valley dominated by the Meiteis, and the hills populated by the Kukis; militants, armed to the teeth, strutting around like warlords across both camps, both the camps fiercely pitched against each other with no possibility of reconciliation in the near or distant future, the hollow hyped-up, double-engine government totally paralysed, and the Union home minister, seemingly, equally at a loss, neither here nor there, in this terrible Catch-22 scenario.
While the PM did a toast with Biden, or, Kamala Harris, who seems to have totally disappeared from the scene, and serenaded around the Egyptian pyramids!
Meanwhile, our world champion women wrestlers continue to touch a deep and intimate chord with the body and soul of the nation, especially with our mothers and daughters. Like real warriors, they are now practicing hard for the next battle in the next international turf, and they are certain, in word and deed, that the fight is on. Even while the BJP bahubali too seems to have disappeared.
They will, indeed, remain eternally, an inspirational role model for girls and women all over India and the world for all time to come. Even while the PM, as in the case of a ruined Manipur, has yet again been rendered speechless, completely forgetting the DNA of the nation he talks about with such easy lucidity.
Besides, the opposition has sensed a breakthrough; one step forward and two steps back. They seem strategic and flexible, choosing consensus and not chaos, tactical advantage, not one-upmanship. There was bonhomie too as Laloo Yadav, who has never ever compromised with the communal forces, like the Congress, and who retains his magical sense of humour despite severe loss of health and a long stint in prison enacted by a revengeful PM, cracked a fatherly joke on Rahul Gandhi. “So why don’t you get married?” Even as the rest of the leaders had a good laugh.
Undoubtedly, the drubbing of the BJP in the Karnataka polls has rubbed a bucket-full-of-salt on the fake messiah, who fought the elections, as in Bengal, as if it was a mandate on him, and him alone, with several solo rallies and road shows, throwing in a fake propaganda movie, and manipulating the mythical sacredness of Jai Bajrang Bali, as failed poll gambits. Denying subsidised rice to Karnataka for the poor, as promised by the Congress, is so typically a vicious act in a long series of such petty acts, that no one is surprised.
As 15-plus opposition parties joined hands in Patna, the 56 inches seem to be shrinking, as if isolated, alienated, ageing, at a total loss about his future, one-dimensional and alone, outside static time and space. You don’t even see him with his party leaders. While a desperate BJP has been left with no allies, except inconsequential splinter groups. So, again, will it be dil maange more once more for the messiah?
Not really. That the opposition conclave waited for both Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, and postponed the meet, is more than a pointer that the Congress has changed both its contours and character. Mamata Bannerjee not only came along, but played a happy referee with the Congress and a sulking Arvind Kejriwal.
Not only that, in eternal hibernation, even Akhilesh Yadav joined, and seems to be oiling his Samajwadi cycle in UP, instead of stagnating in the stasis of his comfort zone. Predictably, Mayawati, Jagan Reddy and Naveen Patnaik were not invited, and correctly so, while Chandreshaker Rao remains in a dilemma. While his daughter is being hounded by the ED, he knows deep in his heart that he will lose the assembly polls in Telengana at the hands of the Congress this time round. Hence, his national ambition seems to have been clipped in the bud.
There are ground reports that the Congress will do exceedingly well in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. If the Congress agrees to accept the leadership of the regional parties where they are weak, as in Bengal or Tamil Nadu, which it will, then the ‘one is to one’ contest will be a strategic double advantage for the opposition alliance. In Bengal, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, the regional parties will yet again be victorious, while the Mahagathbandhan in Bihar is bound to win.
The Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress alliance has a solid chance in Maharashtra for multiple reasons. The Shinde faction is totally discredited with big brother BJP breathing down its neck. With the Shiv Sena cadre still steadfast with Uddhav Thackeray, they are reluctant to fight even the municipal corporation elections! And having checkmated Ajit Pawar, who just can’t be trusted, the NCP is firmly in the command of Sharad Pawar.
The whole world knows that a wily Pawar can smell the tide on a full moon night and the shifting wind with an instinct so sharp, that no other politician in India can match it! So what has he said? He stated categorically after the BJP got so decisively crushed in Karnataka that its days are now over. Coming from Pawar, not even the BJP can deny it.
Meanwhile, the White House has condemned the harassment of Sabrina Siddiqui. who works for the prestigious Wall Street Journal. “We’re aware of the reports of that harassment. It’s unacceptable, and we absolutely condemn any harassment of journalists anywhere in any circumstances,” John Kirby, a White Hose spokesperson on national security issues, told reporters, according to a media organization, The Hill (thehill.com).
He was responding to a journalist’s query on the online harassment of longtime White House reporter Sabrina Siddiqui. “That’s just completely unacceptable, and it’s antithetical to the principles of democracy that… were on display last week during the state visit,” Kirby said.
Indeed, Sabrina was only echoing what Barack Obama had earlier spoken to CNN journalist, Chritiane Amanpour, and which is shared by all democrats across the globe, including leading think tanks in Europe. Obama had said: “If the (US) president meets Prime Minister Modi, then the protection of the Muslim minority in a Hindu majority India is worth mentioning. If I had a conversation with Prime Minister Modi, who I know well, part of my argument would be that if you don’t protect the rights of ethnic minorities in India, there is a strong possibility that India would at some point start pulling apart… We have seen what happens when you start getting those kinds of large internal conflicts. So that would be contrary to the interests of not only the Muslim India but also the Hindu India. I think it is important to be able to talk about these things honestly.”
Social media star Kusha Kapila and her husband Zorawar Ahluwalia recently announced their separation via a post on Instagram.
After announcing the separation, Kusha faced a lot of backlash online after her old interviews started surfacing on social media. Amid all the backlash, her ex-husband Zorawar broke his silence and came in support of Kusha.
Taking to Instagram, on Wednesday, Zorawar shared a note on his stories which reads, “We realise we live public lives, but we still hold certain things sacred. Our marriage and respect for each other being one of them. Divorce much like our marriage was a decision we both made together, after much deliberation and thought. It was a tough and painful decision but one we took collectively, for the sake of both of our well-being. What has transpired over the last 24 hours, with Kusha being subject to vile attacks online makes me sad and disappointed. To attack Kusha’s character and paint her as some villain is shameful. Let’s all please do better.”
Recently, Kusha’s old interviews surfaced on social media in which she could be seen interacting with Karan Johar.
During their conversation, Karan was heard telling her, “Remember sexual infidelity is not infidelity.” To which she replied, “I believe that.” Her reaction to this old interview didn’t go down well with some of the audience.
Reportedly, the duo tied the knot in 2017 after years of dating.
On Monday, Kusha shared a note on their Instagram handle which reads, “Zorawar and I have mutually decided to part ways. This hasn’t been an easy decision by any measure but we know it’s the right one at this point in our lives. The love and life we have shared together continues to mean everything for us but sadly, what we seek currently for ourselves doesn’t align. We gave it our all, until we couldn’t anymore.”
She added, “A relationship ending is heartbreaking and it’s been a tough ordeal for us and our families. Thankfully, we have had some time to process this, but what we shared and built together panned for over a decade. We still need a lot more time and healing to get to the next phase of our lives. Our current focus is to get through this period with love, respect and support towards each other.”
Kusha is a popular social media influencer. She has over 3 million followers on Instagram and more than 9 lakh subscribers on YouTube.
She was also a part of Riteish Deshmukh’s film ‘Plan A Plan B’ which also starred Tamannaah Bhatia. The film premiered on the OTT platform Netflix.
Apart from that, she also appeared in web shows like ‘Masaba Masaba’, ‘Case Toh Banta Hai’ and ‘Comicstaan’.
On the other hand, Zorawar is also a social media influencer with 90 thousand followers on Instagram. (ANI)
‘Ghajini’ and ‘Ready’ film actor Asin, on Wednesday, refuted the rumours of divorce with her husband Rahul Sharma and called it “utterly baseless”.
Taking to Instagram, Asin shared a note on her stories and wrote, “In middle of our summer holiday right now, literally sitting across each other enjoying our breakfast and came across some very imaginative and utterly baseless ‘NEWS’. Reminds of the time we were sitting at home together with our families planning our wedding and we heard that we had broken up Seriously?! Pls do better. (Disappointed to have wasted 5mins of an otherwise wonderful holiday on this!) Have a great day you guys.”
The rumours started surfacing on social media after she reportedly deleted all her pictures with her husband except one from her Instagram account. She has also removed her wedding photos from her social media profile.
Asin married Micromax co-founder Rahul Sharma in January 2016. The couple welcomed their first child, a daughter Arin in October 2017.
After her marriage Asin decided to quit the film industry.
She was last seen in 2015’s comedy ‘All Is Well’, co-starring Abhishek Bachchan, Rishi Kapoor and Supriya Pathak.
She was a part for several big hit Bollywood films like ‘Ghajini’, ‘Ready’, ‘Bol Bachchan’, and ‘Housefull 2’ among others.
She was also part of several South Indian films. (ANI)
Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit spoke about the controversy surrounding his upcoming film ’72 Hoorain’.
The Central Board of Film Certification had rejected a censor certificate for the trailer for National Award-winning director Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan’s film ’72 Hoorain.’ This ruling has stirred concerns about creative freedom and censorship in the film business.
During the press conference, he said, “They (the Censor board) have asked us to remove some scenes and words from the trailer, but they have no objection to keeping those scenes in the film. We are questioning this contradiction. This film is not against any religion and is dealing with terrorism.”
Producer Gulab Singh Tanwar also added, “Films are a mirror of society. They have a significant impact on society. These films are reflections of society’s genuine state and attempt to provide guidance. Sometimes topics arise in which a great deal of truth must be spoken. But there are instances when we are afraid to express the truth. We were up in India, where Pakistan is referred to as neighbouring country and Muslims are referred to as a minority. I’m not sure what society is terrified of. What sort of secularism is this, which comes in the middle of everything, this bothers me, I met Sanjay (Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan). Sanjay was prepping for this film when I met him, I felt like my wish came true.”.
Earlier the makers of ’72 Hoorain’ stated that they would seek assistance from higher authorities. They also spoke about requesting the I&B ministry to intervene in the case and question the CBFC’s senior authorities.
The trailer provides a dramatic insight into a riveting narrative of what happens in the dark world of terrorism and the intense brainwashing of terrorists.
Helmed by two-time National Award winner Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan, it is slated to release on July 7. The film is produced by Gulab Singh Tanwar, Kiran Dagar, and Anirudh Tanwar and is co-produced by Ashoke Pandit. (ANI)
Amid efforts at opposition unity for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, former Gujarat Chief Minister Shankersinh Vaghela, who had campaigned for the Congress in the assembly polls in the state last year, met Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday.
Both Samajwadi Party and Vaghela, a former Congress legislative party leader in Gujarat, described it “courtesy meeting”. “I have come here on a courtesy call…If there is any political talk, information will be shared,” Vaghela told ANI.
Asked about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks on Uniform Civil Code, Vaghela said, “It is their marketing-nothing else…”
Akhilesh Yadav was part of the mega conclave of opposition parties in Patna last month that was aimed at fostering unity for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had said after the meeting that they will fight the elections together and the discussions will be carried forward in another meeting of opposition parties in July.
There have been suggestions in the opposition camp that the largest and strongest party should lead the battle in a state.
Uttar Pradesh is among the states where opposition parties including the Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party, and Congress have clashing ambitions. Samajwadi Party appears keen to get the support of other national parties in its aim to win maximum Lok Sabha seats from the state.
It remains to be seen how many seats Congress would agree to fight if there is an understanding with Samajwadi Party for the Lok Sabha polls. The state has significance for the national ambitions of Congress while SP is also keen to emerge as a key player.
BSP leader Mayawati had taken a dig at the meeting of opposition parties in Patna and had referred to Uttar Pradesh which sends 80 MPs to Lok Sabha. She had said that it does not seem from the attitude of opposition parties that they are serious about their objective in Uttar Pradesh.
Vaghela’s meeting with Yadav,a former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, is being seen as politically significant.
Vaghela had experimented with a third force in Gujarat and formed Rashtriya Janata Party and Jan Vikalp Morcha and Praja Shakti Democratic Party. The octogenarian leader was the Leader of Opposition in the Gujarat assembly and resigned from the Congress in 2017. His son had joined the Congress ahead of the last assembly polls in Gujarat. Vaghela had broken away from BJP and became Chief Minister for almost a year in 1996. He also served as a union minister in the Manmohan Singh government. (ANI)
The union cabinet has approved the fair and remunerative price for sugarcane farmers at Rs 315 per quintal, which is the highest ever, Union Minister Anurag Thakur said here on Wednesday.
He said sugar procurement has increased to Rs 1,13,000 crore and total procurement in the 2014-23 period stands at Rs 7,86,066 crore. Addressing a press conference, the Union Information and Broadcasting Minister said, “PM Modi has always been in support of farmers, that’s why the ministry was named ‘Agriculture and Farmers Welfare’. The cabinet has approved the highest-ever fair and remunerative price of Rs 315/quintal for sugarcane farmers for the sugar season 2023-24.”.
“The decision will benefit 5 crore sugarcane farmers and their dependents, as well as 5 lakh workers employed in the sugar mills and related ancillary activities,” he added.
Making a comparison with the previous governments, the Union Minister said that under the BJP government, timely payments have been made to the sugarcane farmers.
“In 2013-14, the rate used to Rs 210/ quintal and the total procurement was around Rs 97,104 crore. While it has increased to Rs 1,13,000 crore under the BJP government. Under the UPA rule, the total procurement was Rs 2,71,204 crore. While in 2014-23, the procurement of Rs 7,86,066 crore has already been done. At that time, the sugarcane farmers had to block roads and protest for getting their payments. But, in the last few years, all the payments have been timely done and the backlogs have been cleared as well,” he said.
He further added that the scheme of mixing ethanol with crude oil has also turned out beneficial in multiple ways.
“Prime Minister Modi has stressed on mixing of ethanol with crude oil; petrol and diesel. For this purpose, Rs 20,500 crore has been allocated. This shows that now they have more cash, earlier they were overladen with stocks and farmers didn’t receive payments. It has strengthened our Atmanirbharta, led to reduction in the use of foreign exchange and also propelled the growth of ethanol sector,” Thakur further added. (ANI)

Amid the questions being raised over the capabilities of the proposed Predator drone deal with the US, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R Hari Kumar on Wednesday said the drone has got long endurance and can stay in the air for 33 hours.
In an interview with ANI on the capabilities of these drones, the Navy Chief said that the drones can help in keeping a large area under surveillance beyond 2500 nautical miles. He also stated that the Navy has operated these drones on lease for over 12,000 hours to keep an eye on adversaries and provide a lot of capabilities to the defence forces who are keen to procure them.
He said the Navy has been operating these drones since November 2020 after two of them were leased for surveillance in maritime areas.
“Indian Navy has been operating these drones. They fall in the category of the HALE, (high altitude long endurance drones). So, we realised there is a need for having these drones for better surveillance and increased maritime domain awareness,” Kumar said.
He further added, “So we had taken two of these on lease from November 2020 onwards. And since then we have been operating it.”
He said to guard the Indian Ocean region, one has to go 2500 to 3000 miles for various requirements like knowing who is operating in these waters, why are they there and what are they doing there.
Further highlighting the strike capabilities of the Predator drones, he said that in peacetime, the Navy do ISR missions that is Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance missions and when there is a crisis or there is combat etc, there is a possibility of using these drones for detecting, tracking and targeting also.
Explaining the capabilities of the drones in detail, the Navy chief said if you just look at the map here (says while pointing towards map), it’s a very large area, you have to keep almost to go as far as 2500 to 3000 miles to keep that area under surveillance for various requirements.
He said the drone helps to know who all are operating in the area of interest of the Indian Navy.
He said, “The Predator unmanned system, has got long endurance, almost 33 hours. It can stay in the air and it can reach the far reaches of the ocean and areas that you want to keep under constant surveillance, which is not really possible by a satellite”.
“These drones are able to stay there for a longer duration and keep it under surveillance and if somebody is transiting in these waters, we can continuously keep it under watch. So that is a big advantage and we have now learned quite a bit about its capability. We are satisfied with it and that is why we are very keen that these are procured,” he said.
Asked about the ways in which the system will help in indigenisation and ‘Make-in-India’ in defence scheme of the government, the Admiral said that right now, “We don’t have the technology for these HALE UAVs. They are in the high-end category because of their endurance and altitude, they can fly above 40,000ft and so on.”
“So by inducting these, I think the initial ten will come in, built in the US and come here. The rest will be built here, so that will give us the advantage of various technologies that can be transferred in terms of radar processing, sensor fusion, then some of the composites that are part of the aircraft, then titanium alloy castings for the undercarriage and so many others, payloads integration of the weapons,” he added.
The chief said that since 21 aircraft are going to be assembled here, there will be a requirement for smaller companies, MSMEs and startups, etc, to participate in it. So, it will provide an opportunity for the aerospace industry.
He said an MRO (Maintenance repair and overhaul) is also being set up here and therefore, engine components will be available for engine repairs.
He said the deal can also tune the country into a hub for drone hub as all the HALEs in the region can be serviced here only.
“It will generate an entire ecosystem and facilitate the transformation of India into a global, say, unmanned aerial system hub for innovation like it was envisioned by our honourable Prime Minister,” he stated.
He said the existing drones in the Navy are already providing surveillance effort for the Air Force, and the Army.
“And we have used it for keeping surveillance in the Indian Ocean on our adversaries. It has helped in anti-narcotics operations. It has been interfaced with our fleet,” he said and added that the “one we are using right now has got much less capability than the ones being procured in the near future.”
“So once we are going to procure, they will have much better payloads, more payloads. It will have laser, synthetic aperture radar, it’ll have COMINT (Communication Intelligence), ELINT (Electronic Intelligence) and it will be hardened, it will have collision avoidance systems and can operate multi unmanned aerial vehicles in the same domain,” he said adding that the deal will provide “a lot of advantages will be there in that and that will really be a capability boost for us.” (ANI)
The Law Commission of India Chairman Justice Rituraj Awasthi in an exclusive interview with ANI said that the Sedition law is the need of the hour and they have examined the usage of law and that it is much needed seeing the current condition of the country.
“Sedition law is very much needed. We have thoroughly examined the issue of the usage of Sedition law. We have submitted our report to the government. We have said that it is very much required in the present situation of the country for integrity and unity,” Justice Awasthi said while talking to ANI. “From Kashmir to Kerala and from Punjab to North East, if you see the situation, you’ll see it’s required for the integrity of the country”, he added.
The Law Commission of India recently in its report submitted to Law Ministry recommended that Section 124A of IPC dealing with Sedition needs to be retained in the Indian Penal Code, through certain amendments, so as to bring about greater clarity regarding the usage of the provision.
We further recommend that the scheme of punishment provided under the said section be amended to ensure that it is brought in parity with the other offences under Chapter VI of IPC, stated the Law Commission report.
Moreover, cognizant of the views regarding the misuse of Section 124A, the Commission recommends that model guidelines curbing the same be issued by the Central Government. In this context, it is also alternatively suggested that a provision analogous to Section 196(3) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 (CrPC) may be incorporated as a proviso to Section 154 of CrPC, which would provide the requisite procedural safeguard before the filing of an FIR with respect to an offence under Section 124A of IPC, said Law Commission in its report to Law Ministry.
The reasons leading upto these recommendations have been deliberated over in detail in the enclosed Report and the Commission is of the firm belief that incorporating the same would go a long way in addressing the concerns associated with the usage of this provision, the report added.
Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi, Chairperson of the 22nd Law Commission of India in the report based on ‘Usage of the Law of Sedition’ stated, “We undertook a comprehensive study of the law relating to sedition and its usage in India, tracing its genesis and development.”
The Commission also analysed the history of sedition, both in colonial and independent India, the law on sedition in various jurisdictions, and the various pronouncements of the Hon’ble Supreme Court and the High Courts on the subject matter.
The Law Commission Reporter stated that it received a reference from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India for a study of the usage of the provision of Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code, 1860 (IPC) and suggest amendments, if any.
The constitutionality of Section 124A of IPC was challenged before the Supreme Court. The Union of India assured the Supreme Court that it was re-examining Section 124A and the Court may not invest its valuable time in doing the same. Pursuant to the same and vide order passed on May 11, 2022, the Supreme Court directed the Central Government and all the State Governments to refrain from registering any FIR or taking any coercive measures, while suspending all continuing investigations in relation to Section 124A.
Further, it also directed that all pending trials, appeals, and proceedings be kept in abeyance. (ANI)
