Election Commission of India Lok Sabha

ECI Organises Conference With Chief Electoral Officers Of States, UTs

With the Lok Sabha elections only a few months away, the Election Commission of India began a two-day Conference on Thursday with the Chief Electoral Officers of all States and Union Territories to review preparedness for the polls.

The conference which began in New Delhi at India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM) on Thursday will deliberate on the preparedness for the next general elections, scheduled to take place this year.

The full Commission, led by the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), senior EC HQ officials and CEOs are participating in the meeting.

“A two-day Conference of Chief Electoral Officers of all States/UTs began in New Delhi this morning. The meeting, being held at IIIDEM, is reviewing preparedness for General Elections 2024. The full Commission, led by the CEC, senior EC HQ officials and CEOs are participating,” the poll body said.

In the 2019 general elections, the BJP scripted history by winning a record 303 seats out of 542 whereas the Congress could manage only 52 seats. Narendra Modi, the first non-Congress full majority Prime Minister to be re-elected, has done so with a stronger majority.

With just six months remaining until the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, political parties have already launched campaign plans to reach out to voters.

Amid talks between the INDIA partners to arrive at a seat-sharing agreement for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections, BJP national president JP Nadda on Tuesday arrived in Guwahati to chair key party meetings in the state.

However, the seat-sharing for the Lok Sabha elections remains a major point of contention for members in the INDIA bloc.

The allocation of seats for the general elections is especially significant for the Congress after the heavy defeats in the assembly elections in the heartland states of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan. (ANI)

Modi To Kick-Start Election Rally From Bihar’s Bettiah On Jan 13

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to kick-off his campaign for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from Bihar’s Champaran on January 13 by addressing a rally at the Raman Maidan in Bettiah city, the sources said on Sunday.

During this visit, PM Modi is also expected to inaugurate and lay the foundation stones for various projects, including roads and bridges, across Bihar, according to party sources.

The BJP has formulated extensive plans for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Bihar, aiming for victory in all 40 seats. PM Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and BJP President JP Nadda are slated to address several rallies in Bihar during January and February. Key rallies are anticipated after January 15 when campaigning restrictions are lifted.

PM Modi is scheduled to address three rallies in Begusarai, Bettiah, and Aurangabad in the state.

Similarly, Amit Shah is expected to address gatherings in Sitamarhi, Madhepura, and Nalanda during January and February. JP Nadda might hold rallies in several places, particularly in the Seemanchal and eastern regions of Bihar.

Bihar’s political landscape has witnessed a shift, with the BJP now in opposition while the JDU is part of the Mahagathbandhan government.

Nitish Kumar has successfully united opposition leaders for the upcoming elections, marking a change from the previous alliance with the BJP. The battle is set for all 40 Lok Sabha seats in Bihar, where the NDA secured 39 seats in the last elections, with Congress winning one.

As Narendra Modi leads the BJP’s campaign again, the party has entrusted the state organisation to leader Samrat Choudhary. The political scenario in Bihar is gearing up for a significant electoral showdown. (ANI)

INDIA Bloc: Mamata Keen To Test Bengal Waters Alone

The buzz over the seat-sharing formula of the opposition’s INDIA bloc hit a crescendo on Friday after a few partners within the alliance hinted at going all ‘alone’ in next year’s Lok Sabha elections or not willing to ‘compromise’ in their respective states.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut has asserted that their party is the biggest in Maharashtra, hinting at no compromise over seat-sharing talks.

“This is Maharashtra, and Shiv Sena is the biggest party here. Congress is a national party. Uddhav Thackeray is having positive discussions with the decision-making leaders of Congress including Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and KC Venugopal. We have always said that Shiv Sena has always been fighting on 23 seats in the Lok Sabha elections including Dadra and Nagar Haveli and that will be firm,” Raut had said.

Prior to Shiv Sena (UBT), Mamata Banerjee on Thursday expressed her desire to test Bengal waters alone in the next year’s Lok Sabha elections.

“INDIA alliance will be there across the country. In Bengal, the TMC will fight and defeat the BJP. Remember, in Bengal, only TMC can teach a lesson to the BJP and not any other party,” Mamata said while she was speaking at a gathering in North 24 Parganas.

However, the Trinamool Congress supremo said that INDIA alliance will contest on all seats across the country.

Meanwhile, Congress has said that talks on the agreement with all the parties will be held with an ‘open mind’.

Speaking to ANI on Monday, Jairam Ramesh, the Congress general secretary in charge of communications, said, “Khule mann aur band muh se hi hum seat sharing pe baat aage chalaenge (We will carry forward seat-sharing talks with an open mind and refraining from public statements).”

The Congress leader added that different states would pose different challenges with regard to advancing seat-sharing talks and the discussions, hence, be held, taking all aspects into consideration.

“The seat-sharing talks are ongoing and will continue. We will do what needs to be done. There are different conditions and challenges in different states. We will be having discussions on seat sharing, keeping in mind the different (political) realities there,” Ramesh said.

While the INDIA partners came together for their fourth meeting in the national capital recently, the potentially thorny issue of seat-sharing was left unaddressed.

The opposition parties have forged forces to put up a united front against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls under the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance umbrella. (ANI)

INDIA Bloc PM Will Be Decided After 2024 Polls: Mamata

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said that the Prime Minister candidate of the opposition alliance – INDIA bloc will be decided after 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

“After elections, everybody will decide,” the Trinamool Congress leader told reporters here in the national capital, a day ahead of the bloc’s scheduled meeting.

Queried by reporters on what should be the role of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the general elections, Mamata Banerjee said she cannot speak about alliance partners.

“I cannot say anything about another political party,” she noted.

However, she said she was ready for joint campaigning and she was willing to rally for any India bloc parties.

In her press conference, she also delved into the recent Parliament security breach incident and attacked the central government on the overall security of the country.

“If they cannot protect the new Parliament, how will they protect the country? It’s a deep question,” Mamata Banerjee said.

She demanded an “impartial investigation” into the unfortunate incident.

The next meeting of the leaders of the INDIA bloc will be held on December 19 in the national capital.

Taking to ‘X’, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said, “The 4th meeting of the leaders of INDIA parties will be held on Tuesday, December 19th, 2023, in New Delhi at 3 p.m.”

Seat sharing for the Lok Sabha polls, which are just four months away, is likely to be at the top of the agenda for the next INDIA bloc meeting and will be crucial for Congress, particularly as the party lost Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh Assembly polls, the Hindi heartland states.

The first meeting of the joint opposition convened in Patna on June 23 and the second meeting was held in Bengaluru on July 17-18. The third meeting happened in Mumbai on August 31-September 1.

INDIA or ‘Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance’ is a group of opposition parties, including the Congress. The parties have come together to take on the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which is led by PM Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and prevent it from winning a third straight term at the Centre in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

In the Mumbai meeting, the opposition parties adopted resolutions to collectively contest the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections while announcing that seat-sharing arrangements would be finalized as soon as possible through a spirit of give-and-take.

The theme chosen by the INDIA bloc for the elections is “Judega Bharat, Jeetega India” (India will unite, India will win) to take on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government. (ANI)

BJP-NDA Lok Sabha

2024 Election Results Will Be Beyond Barriers: Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed confidence about the BJP-led alliance returning to power in the next year’s Lok Sabha elections and said “2024 election results will be beyond barriers”.

Speaking at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit on Saturday, PM Modi said the country has broken several barriers over the past nine years and asserted that the country is full of confidence today.

The Prime Minister referred to the themes of the HT Summit over the years, from ‘Reshaping India’ in 2014 to ‘Conversation for a Better Tomorrow’ in 2019, and ‘Beyond Barriers’ in 2023. “Although opinion polls usually come a few weeks before the elections, but you have given a clear message that this time, breaking all the barriers, the people of the country are going to support us! 2024 election results will be beyond barriers,” he said.

“The journey from ‘Reshaping India’ to ‘Beyond Barriers’ has laid the foundations for a brighter future of the country. On these foundations only will be built a developed India, a prosperous India,” he added.

PM Modi talked about the country breaking barriers in several fields, including sports, due to the initiatives of the government.

“For a long time, we Indians had to face many barriers…our country could not move forward at the pace it was capable of. A big barrier was the mentality. Since 2014, we have been working hard to break these barriers in India. That’s why today we are talking about India beyond barriers,” PM Modi said.

“Today, India has touched the moon where no one reached. Today, India has become number one in digital transactions. India is leading in mobile manufacturing. India is in the top three among startups. Today, India is hosting events like G-20,” he added.

The Prime Minister said that the barrier of mindset had stopped the country from moving forward and referred to Mahatma Gandhi unifying people during the freedom movement through the Dandi march.

“Today every Indian is filled with confidence,” he said, adding that the country was also coming out of “perceived barriers”. (ANI)

Mayawati To Hold Party Meeting For 2024 Lok Sabha Poll Strategy

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Sunday called a special meeting of senior leaders and district heads of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand to review the preparations for the Lok Sabha elections on Sunday.

The meeting will be held in Lucknow, where important guidelines regarding the preparations for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections will be given. Sources confirmed that the meeting will start at 11 am.

During the meeting, discussions regarding the strategy to publicize the party’s demand before the Central government to increase the participation of Other Backward Classes and SC-STs in the Women’s Reservation Bill will take place.

Earlier last month, Mayawati had said that leaders of her party are working to strengthen preparation for the Lok Sabha elections due next year.

Taking to her X handle, Mayawati said that after Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, senior leaders of the BSP discussed strengthening the party organisation in Jharkhand and also selected candidates for 14 seats in the state.

“Continuing the series of state-wise meetings by the BSP regarding the preparations for the Lok Sabha elections, after UP and Uttarakhand, senior leaders discussed strengthening the party organisation in Jharkhand, increasing the mass base at all levels, and the selection of candidates for 14 seats in the state. An important meeting with office bearers has concluded,” wrote Mayawati on Twitter.

“A call to strengthen the party at every level by putting forward hardworking and honest people in the tribal-dominated Jharkhand state, because the anti-Ambedkarite people are continuously neglected and despised by the anti-Ambedkarite parties,” she added.

Earlier, the BSP chief had asked her party leaders and workers to not depend on alliances and to stand on their own. The development comes as the BSP chief last month announced that the Bahujan Samaj Party would not join any alliance and would fight the elections “single-handedly”.

She also referred to the INDIA parties and NDA as “anti-poor, casteist, communal, and pro-capitalist”.

“BSP, like in 2007, will single-handedly contest the upcoming general elections and four state assemblies by connecting crores of neglected and scattered people of the society on the basis of mutual brotherhood, rather than the jugaad’ and manipulation done by opponents,” she wrote on X.

“The policies of most of the parties in the NDA-India alliance are anti-poor, casteist communal, and pro-Dhanna Seth (capitalist), and the BSP has been contesting elections in the alliance with them. Hence the appeal to the media—no fake news, please,” the BSP head said. (ANI)
