UNSC Claim To Speak For World When Largest Democracy Is Not Permanent: Modi

Making a strong pitch for India’s permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said the primary UN body cannot claim to be speaking for the world when its most populous country and the largest democracy is not a permanent member.

He made the remark during an interview with French newspaper ‘Les Echos’ ahead of his two-day official visit to France that begins later on Thursday.
On whether the credibility of UN was at stake, with India still not finding permanent membership of the UNSC, Prime Minister Modi said the UN was one of many global institutions that were founded in the wake of the Second World War, and it has to be seen whether they are representative of today’s world, which has transformed a lot in the last eight decades.

Further, speaking to Les Echos, PM Modi said, “The issue is not just of credibility, but something much larger. I believe that the world needs to have an honest discussion about the multilateral governance structures that were built in the aftermath of second World War.”

He added that nearly eight decades after the institutions were created, the world has transformed, the number of member-countries have grown four-fold and the character of the global economy has also changed.

“We live in an era of new technology. New powers have risen causing a relative shift in global balance. We face new challenges, including climate change, cyber security, terrorism, space security, pandemics. I could go on about the changes. In this changed world, many questions arise – are these representative of today’s world? Are they able to discharge the roles for which they were set up? Do countries around the world feel that these organizations matter, or are relevant?” PM Modi said.

He said, “How can the UN Security Council claim to be speaking for the world, when its most populous country and largest democracy is not a permanent member?”

“The UN Security Council, in particular, epitomises this dissonance. How can we talk of it as a primary organ of a global body, when entire continents of Africa and Latin America are ignored? How can it claim to speak for the world when its most populous country, and its largest democracy, is not a permanent member? And its skewed member-ship leads to opaque decision making processes, which adds to its helplessness in ad-dressing the challenges of today,” he added.

Appreciating the position of France in the matter, Prime Minister Modi said the voices of all countries must be heard with respect to proposed changes to the UN Security Council.

“I think most countries are clear on what changes they would like to see in the UN Security Council, including on the role India should play. We just need to listen to their voice and heed their advice. I must appreciate the clear and consistent position that France has taken in this matter,” he added.

Earlier, on Thursday, PM Modi embarked on the visit to France at the invitation of President Marcon.

He will be the Guest of Honour at the Bastille Day Parade of France on July 14, where the tri-services of the Indian armed forces contingent will be participating.

Three Rafale fighters will also perform a flypast in the parade.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the India–France Strategic Partnership and Prime Minister’s visit will provide an opportunity to chart the course of the partnership for the future across diverse sectors such as strategic, cultural, scientific, academic and economic cooperation.

During his France visit from July 13-14, PM Modi will hold formal talks with President Emmanuel Macron. Macron will host a State Banquet as well as a private dinner in honour of the Prime Minister.

Also, during his visit, PM Modi will meet the Indian diaspora and leading CEOs from both nations. (ANI)

Kwatra said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President of the UAE Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayadal Nayan last met in June in Abu Dhabi when the PM visited UAE while on his return from the G7 summit in Munich.

“They have since also met on many virtual platforms, including in July last year, during the I2U2 (India, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States) summit,” the Foreign Secretary said.

Kwatra further mentioned that in February 2022, during the virtual summit, the comprehensive economic partnership agreement between India and UAE was signed. A joint vision statement was also issued at that time.

“We have seen a significant jump, qualitative enhancement, in the substance of our engagement across the whole range of areas since the signing of the CEPA (Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement). And the partnership has continued to grow from strength to strength. This is particularly reflected in the strong economic exchanges, both on the trade side, but also on the investment side, people-to-people ties and also convergence on a range of regional and international issues,” Kwatra added.

“UAE is also a special invitee during India’s G20 presidency summit to be held in September this year. Indian and UAE are also cooperating very closely on COP28, which will be held in UAE towards the end of this year,” Foriegn Secretary Vinay Kwatra said.

“Prime Minister’s visit to UAE provides a useful opportunity for us to review this important partnership and inject further momentum across the whole range of areas that we cooperated,” he added.

Further speaking on the economic ties between India and UAE, Kwatra informed that the bilateral trade is at 85 billion dollars between India and UAE. Which made UAE India’s third-largest trading partner last year. India’s second-largest export destination is UAE.

“Bilateral trade is currently at a very strong 85 billion dollars between India and UAE, making UAE India’s third largest trading partner last year and India’s second-largest export destination is UAE. Also, very substantial large sums of FTI (Foreign Trade Investments) flows from UAE have taken place to India, making UAE the fourth largest overall investor in India,” Kwatra informed during the press briefing.

Kwatra further informed that the UAE and India are also very strong partners in the field of energy security. Several new areas of partnership and engagement have also registered strong progress including in the field of renewables, health, food security, SNT, education, fintech, and defence and security.

“The Indian diaspora presents very strong and robust numbers in UAE, about 3.5 billion,” he said.

Kwatra credited the historical people-to-people ties between India and UAE to remain a key pillar of the strategic partnership between India and UAE.

Kwatra said that in the last few years, a significant transformation has taken place in India-UAE relations and central driver of this has been the vision of the two leaders, the President of the UAE and the Prime Minister of India.

“Both of them, of course, also enjoy an excellent personal rapport, which is reflected in their very frequent engagements,” Kwatra added.

Prime Minister will depart for the UAE after concluding his visit to France.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit France later this week to attend this year’s Bastille Day parade as the guest of honour, at the invitation of President Emmanuel Macron.

The Bastille Day Parade will witness a 269-member tri-services contingent of the Indian Armed Forces marching alongside their French partners.

The Fete Nationale Francaise is celebrated on July 14 or the National Day in France. It is also known as Bastille Day as this day is the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille in 1789 during the French Revolution.

The Indian military contingent would also be part of the marching contingent on Bastille Day, alongside their French counterparts to mark this important milestone.

Notably, PM Modi’s visit will coincide with the 25th anniversary of the “strategic partnership” between France and India.

PM Modi’s visit is expected to herald the next phase in the India-France Strategic Partnership by setting new and ambitious goals for our strategic, cultural, scientific, academic, and economic cooperation, including in a wide range of industries, an official statement released by the Indian Embassy in France said earlier. Reacting sharply to the violence that erupted in West Bengal on the day of the Panchayat Polls in the state, the Union Minister raised questions about the recurring instances of violence, arson, and anarchy in Bengal during elections, suggesting a disturbing trend.
“It is disheartening to witness the prevalence of violence in Bengal during elections. The culture of resorting to destructive means tarnishes India’s reputation and undermines the essence of democracy worldwide,” Thakur stated.

Referring to several instances of rigging, Thakur also criticized the use of ballot boxes instead of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).

He further remarked on the grave extent to which violence and murder were being used by Mamata Banerjee led TMC to establish dominance in Panchayati Raj.

The deteriorating law and order situation in Bengal, which has resulted in multiple deaths and injuries, has drew attention and raised worries throughout the country and abroad, he said.

Thakur strongly denounced the orchestrated violence in West Bengal, holding the Trinamool Congress (TMC) responsible.

He posed a direct question to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, asking why every election in West Bengal is accompanied by violence, bombings, and murders.

He emphasized that the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee cannot absolve herself of responsibility and that she must be held accountable.

Additionally, Thakur pointed out the silence of certain individuals and groups who are typically vocal on issues related to violence.

He questioned the silence of the “Award Vapsee” (award returning) gang, which was vocal even on minor incidents.

“They are now, nowhere to be seen,” he added.

He urged everyone to address the alarming situation in Bengal and voiced disappointment over the lack of attention it has received.

Thakur further called for immediate action to restore peace and order in West Bengal and ensure that democracy prevails in the state. (ANI)

BRS, Cong Dangerous For Country: Modi

Launching a scathing attack on Chief Minister Chandrashekar Rao-led Bharat Rashtra Samithi government and the Congress in Telangana, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said the state has been “trapped in the claws of dynastic parties.”

“Both BRS & Congress are dangerous for people of Telangana…” PM Modi said, adding KCR government is the most “corrupt government.”

“You people had never thought that one day your state of Telangana will be trapped in the claws of dynastic parties. They think only about the future of their children,” the PM said while addressing a rally in Warangal in Telangana.

“The foundation of all these dynastic parties has its roots in corruption. The dynastic Congress party’s corruption was witnessed by the whole country. And the whole of Telangana is seeing the level of corruption in the state by BRS…” PM Modi hit out at both the BRS and Congress.

Under such a situation, the Central government decided to put a special focus on the development and connectivity of Telangana in the last nine years, PM Modi said.

“The present government in Telangana has done 4 things, abusing PM Modi & Bharatiya Janata Party government. They made one family the centre for power, they pushed Telangana’s economic development into turmoil… duping Telangana into corruption…” PM Modi said.

He alleged that there is no project in the state that does not have allegations of corruption.

“KCR government is the most corrupt government…” PM Modi alleged, adding that the people of Telangana should take “note” of one more thing. “The BRS government has done the cardinal sin of shattering the trust of its people. You people had harboured a lot of expectations from this government. But they have not lived up to your expectations,” the PM said.

Earlier on Saturday, Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation stones of various infrastructure development projects worth Rs 6,100 crore in Warangal and lauded the people of Telangana for their “great contribution” to the history of India.

From Warangal, PM Modi will travel to Bikaner in Rajasthan, to dedicate and lay the foundation stone of development projects worth over Rs 24,300 crore, a PMO statement earlier informed.

The statement further added that PM will dedicate to the nation a six-lane greenfield expressway section of the Amritsar – Jamnagar Economic Corridor and phase-I of the Inter-State Transmission Line for Green Energy Corridor.

The statement further added that the PM will lay the foundation stone for the redevelopment of Bikaner Railway station.PM Narendra Modi is on a tour of four states including Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, and Rajasthan from July 7 to 8.
