FIFA WC: Kramaric brace helps Croatia thump Canada 4-1

Andrej Kramaric’s brace helped Croatia thump Canada 4-1 in the Group F clash to knock them out of the FIFA World Cup at the Khalifa International Stadium on Sunday.

Croatia overcame an early setback in the game after Alphonso Davies’ spectacular header gave Canada a strong start but the 2018 World Cup runner-ups played with poise and tenacity to clinch a significant victory to maintain its lead in Group F.
The second half started with Jonathan Osario going for the glory shot from a distance that missed the Croatian goalpost by whiskers.

Kramaric was a live wire in the field and he again created a chance for Croatia in the 51st minute as he sent a cross in the Canada box but it missed everyone to go in vain. The forward came close to scoring his second goal in the 55th minute after he was left unmarked in the box but Milan Borjan made a brilliant stop to keep his team in the hunt.

The 2018 finalists were all over the Canadian team but the team had an opportunity to level through Jonathan David in the 58th minute but the chance went begging as the Croatian goalie kept the shot from finding the back of the net.

Croatian forward Kramaric turned magician for his second goal as he made a magical first touch as he twisted, turned and shot to find the Canadian net for his second goal of the match.

Absolute dominance is what defined Croatia’s game during the last 20 minutes as they kept the possession and attacked relentlessly.

The continuous attacks bore fruit for them as attacking midfielder Lovro Mjaer scored in injury time for Croatia to pile up the misery of Canada, ending the game reflecting his team’s dominance in the game.

Canada suffered a massive defeat as the final whistle ended the team’s chances of advancing into the knockout stage.

Strikes from Andrej Kramaric and Marko Livaja put Croatia ahead against Canada in a Group F match being played here at Khalifa International Stadium. The Croatians at one stage were trailing behind by one goal but they made a comeback to level as well as take the lead going into half-time.

Alphonso Davies headed in Tajon Buchanan’s cross from close range to score Canada’s first-ever World Cup goal. The Canadians took an early 1-0 lead in the second minute of the match.

Seven minutes later goal scorer Davies tried a through ball but Cyle Larin was caught offside.

Marko Livaja made a first on-target attempt for Croatia with the help of Mateo Kovacic’s assist but the attempt was saved in the 22nd minute of the match. Four minutes later Marcelo Brozovic tried a through ball but Marko Livaja was caught offside.

Croatians kept pressing as in the 35th minute Marko Livaja’s right-footed shot from the right side of the box is saved in the centre of the goal.

In the 36th minute, the 2018 finalists scored their first goal as Ivan Perisic’s attempt allowed Andrej Kramaric’s take a left-footed shot from a difficult angle on the left to the centre of the goal to level the score.

Croatia took a lead in the 44th minute when Marko Livaja’s right-footed shot from outside the box went onto hit the bottom left corner. They maintained the lead going into half-time.

Croatia came into this match after being held to a 0-0 draw against Morocco in their first match. On the other hand, the Canadians narrowly lost out to Belgium in their first game. (ANI)

Mainpuri elections Yogi

Mainpuri Election Scene Heats Up As Yogi Set To Enter Campaign

The heat quotient of the high stakes Mainpuri elections is going go up further as UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath enters the campaign with his first public meeting in Mainpuri scheduled to take place on November 28.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has already unleashed its army of MLAs and ministers to fight the Samajwadi party in its traditional bastion.
CM Yogi is going to address a public meeting at Narsingh Yadav Inter College, Karhal. It is expected that Yogi Adityanath will try to influence the minds of the people of Mainpuri continuously till 3 December.

The tension of Akhilesh Yadav, who is facing political heat in the Mainpuri by-election, is going to increase after the arrival of Yogi. In fact, CM Yogi Adityanath is starting his first public meeting from the constituency of Akhilesh Yadav. In such a situation, the SP President will have to put more emphasis on Karhal, which is considered an SP stronghold.

Earlier, Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya held two meetings in Mainpuri. Deputy CM Brijesh Pathak has been holding meetings in Mainpuri for two consecutive days to turn voter mood in BJP’s favor. Apart from this, Party President Chaudhary Bhupendra Singh and General Secretary Organization Dharampal Singh are leaving no stone unturned to influence the workers.

The Lok Sabha by-election in Mainpuri is a high-profile one. The seat is witnessing a main contest between BJP candidate former MP Raghuraj Singh Shakya and Dimple Yadav, the wife of Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav. Earlier this by-election was considered easy for Dimple Yadav.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has changed all the pre-poll predictions by fielding veteran leader Raghuraj Singh Shakya here.

At present, both parties are putting their full force into the campaign. Late Mulayam Singh Yadav was a continuous MP from here. However, in the last Lok Sabha elections, Mulayam’s victory margin was very low. Since then, it was believed that after Mulayam, Mainpuri would not be easy for the SP.

This became clear only in the by-elections that were held after the death of Mulayam Singh Yadav. If political pundits are to be believed, now the matter is 50-50. During a conversation in the Jaswantnagar assembly, an elderly voter admitted that this time the fight is tough. This is the reason Samajwadi Party which used to hold one or two meetings in Mainpuri and only local workers used to ask for votes, is doing a much bigger campaign.

Presently the situation is that Akhilesh Yadav himself is visiting the same village many times in his assembly. Apart from them, all the big leaders of SP including Dimple Yadav, Shivpal Yadav, and Ramgopal Yadav are campaigning vigorously.

Since the nomination, party candidate Raghuraj Singh Shakya has been campaigning intensively from 7 am to 10 pm. A local BJP leader Bharat Deep, said, ” Our candidate has visited most of the Mainpuri Lok Sabha by going street by street. They say that the public has now made up its mind for a change. The support of the people of Mainpuri is with him.” (ANI)

anti-Covid restrictions protests in China

BBC Journalist Beaten, Handcuffed As China Boils Over Zero Covid Policy

In worrying news around the ongoing mass anti-Covid restrictions protests across China, British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has expressed concern over the treatment meted out by Chinese authorities, to its journalist, who was arrested and handcuffed while covering a similar ongoing protest in Shanghai.

In a statement, BBC showed concern over the reports that its journalist in China, Ed Lawrence was beaten and kicked by the police while he was being arrested.
“The BBC is extremely concerned about the treatment of our journalist Ed Lawrence, who was arrested and handcuffed while covering the protests in Shanghai. He was held for several hours before being released. During his arrest, he was beaten and kicked by the police. This happened while he was working as an accredited journalist,” BBC said.

The BBC said it is very worrying that one of their accredited journalists was attacked in this way whilst carrying out his official duties.

“We have had no official explanation or apology from the Chinese authorities, beyond a claim by the officials who later released him that they had arrested him for his own good in case he caught Covid from the crowd. We do not consider this a credible explanation,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, huge protests continue across many cities in China. In an unprecedented show of defiance against the zero-Covid policy, protestors are even heard chanting “Step down, Xi Jinping! Step down, Communist Party,” according to a CNN report.

This large-scale protest was apparently sparked by an apartment block fire in Urumqi, the capital of the Xinjiang province, which killed at least 10 people on Thursday and has acted as a catalyst for searing public anger.

According to media reports, much of the demonstration started as videos emerged that seemed to suggest lockdown measures delayed firefighters from reaching the victims.

From the capital Beijing to the financial hub of Shanghai, people reportedly gathered to mourn the dead from the Xinjiang fire, while holding protests against zero-Covid policies.

By Sunday evening, on dozens of university campuses, students demonstrated or put up protest posters. Protests also spread to Chengdu, Guangzhou and Wuhan, where residents called for not only an end to Covid restrictions.

At Tsinghua University, in the capital city Beijing, students gathered on a square to protest against zero-Covid.

Videos and images circulating on social media show students holding up sheets of white paper and shouting: “Democracy and rule of law! Freedom of expression!”

According to CNN, residents in locked-down neighborhoods tore down barriers and took to the streets, following mass anti-lockdown protests in Urumqi on Friday.

Such widespread scenes of anger and defiance are rare in China, where the ruling Communist Party clamps down on all forms of dissent. However, the increase in COVID restrictions long detested across the country has brought matters to a head. (ANI)

US: Plane Crashes Into Power Lines In Montgomery County, Cuts Off Electricity

A widespread power outage was seen after a small plane crashed into the power lines of Montgomery County in the US state of Maryland on Sunday night, the Washington Post reported citing the local authorities.

The plane crash resulted in an electricity cut-off that affected over 90,000 homes and businesses throughout Montgomery County which is equivalent to one-quarter of the county facing the outage, however, no one was injured in the incident.
“A small plane has crashed into power lines in the area of Rothbury Dr & Goshen Rd, taking out power to parts of the county. @mcfrs is on the scene. PLEASE AVOID THE AREA, as there are still live wires,” the official Twitter handle of the Montgomery County Department of Police tweeted.

The crash took place nearby a commercial area due to rainy weather, however, its cause yet remains unknown. One estimate indicates that the plane may have hit lines as high as 10 stories up. That could not be immediately confirmed, the Washington Post reported.

The investigation of the plane crash is underway. (ANI)

Covid In China

Covid In China: Protests Erupt In Jinping’s Alma Mater Tsinghua Univ

In defiance of China’s zero-Covid policy, hundreds of students on Sunday protested at President Xi Jinping’s alma mater, Tsinghua University here.

“Protests have spread to Xi Jinping’s alma mater Tsinghua, where a student said: If we don’t speak up due to the fear of the [dark regime], I think our people will be disappointed. As a Tsinghua student, I’d regret this for the rest of my life. The crowd called out don’t be scared!” tweeted Linda Lew, a Bloomberg reporter.
Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Shanghai, where people were being bundled into police cars. Students have also demonstrated at universities in Beijing and Nanjing.

Hundreds of students from Beijing’s Tsinghua University rallied at their campus on Sunday.

“Tsinghua university right now the city after city seeing protests small and large against Zero Covid policies and against excesses of Communist Party rule – every hour there seems to be a new one,” tweeted Emily Feng, she posted a clip from Weibo, a China microblogging website.

Meanwhile, hundreds of people gathered in downtown Shanghai on Sunday afternoon to hold what appeared to be a silent protest near where a demonstration against China’s zero-Covid policy erupted in the early hours.

Demonstrators holding blank pieces of paper and white flowers stood silently at several intersections, the person said under condition of anonymity, before police officers eventually moved to clear the blocked roads.

Protests in China against heavy COVID-19 curbs spread to Shanghai on Sunday, with demonstrators also gathering at one of Beijing’s most prestigious universities after a deadly fire in the country’s far west sparked widespread anger, reported Reuters.

The latest unrest follows a protest in the remote north-west city of Urumqi, where lockdown rules were blamed after 10 people died in a tower block fire.

China is battling a surge in infections that has prompted lockdowns and other restrictions in cities across the country as Beijing adheres to a zero-Covid-19 policy even as much of the world tries to coexist with the coronavirus.

A fire on Thursday that killed 10 people in a high-rise building in Urumqi, capital of the Xinjiang region, has sparked widespread public anger. Many Internet users surmised that residents could not escape in time because the building was partially locked down, which city officials denied.

In Shanghai, China’s most populous city and financial hub, residents gathered on Saturday night at the city’s Wulumuqi Road – which borrows its name from Urumqi – for a vigil that turned into a protest in the early hours of Sunday.

“Lift lockdown for Urumqi, lift lockdown for Xinjiang, lift lockdown for all of China!” the crowds in Shanghai shouted, according to a video circulated on social media.

At one point a large group began shouting, “Down with the Chinese Communist Party, down with Xi Jinping, free Urumqi!”, according to witnesses and videos, in a rare public protest against the Chinese leadership.

China defends President Xi Jinping’s signature zero-Covid-19 policy as life-saving and necessary to prevent overwhelming the healthcare system.

Officials have vowed to continue with it despite the growing public pushback and its mounting toll on the world’s second-biggest economy.

Videos from Shanghai widely shared on Chinese social media showed crowds facing dozens of police and calling out chants including: “Serve the people”, “We don’t want health codes” and “We want freedom,” reported The Straits Times.

Some social media users posted screenshots of street signs for Wulumuqi Road, both to evade censors and show support for protesters in Shanghai. Others shared comments or posts calling for all of “you brave young people” to be careful. Many included advice on what to do if police came or started arresting people during a protest or vigil.

Shanghai’s 25 million people were put under lockdown for two months earlier this year, an ordeal that provoked anger and protest.

Chinese authorities have since then sought to be more targeted in their Covid-19 curbs.

But that effort has been challenged by a surge in infections as China faces its first winter with the highly transmissible Omicron variant. (ANI)

News Wrap

Five Things That Happened Last Week (And What to Make of Them)

Modi tops approval ratings of global leaders

Indiaäs Prime Minister Narendra Modi has topped a survey by Morning Consult Political Intelligence, a global decision intelligence company headquartered in the US, which tracks approval ratings of leaders in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States. With a 77% approval rating, Modi topped the latest list of ratings based on a survey conducted during November 16-22, 2022.

Modi was followed in the second spot by the Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and in the third spot by Australian prime minister Anthony Albanese.

The Bharatiya JanataParty (BJP) is predictably chuffed about Modi topping Morning Consult’s list. The survey also reiterates what could be called the TINA (There Is No Alternative) factor that serves to benefit Modi. There is no leader with a national stature that could be considered as an alternative to Modi really. The Congress, which is the only other national party, is in shambles and needs a complete overhaul under the newly elected party boss, Mallikarjun Kharge; the other national parties are too small to matter; and although regional leaders such as Arvind Kejriwal of the Aam Aadmi Party and Mamata Banerjee of the Trinamool Congress may have emerged as BJP’s challengers in some state elections, neither has the heft yet to challenge Modi on the national arena.

Surveys such as Morning Consult’s come accompanied by the usual caveats. It is a moving average of a continuous survey and the sample size is typically small. The company’s website does not specify what the sample size for India is but states that it could range between 500 to 5,000, which is pretty vague, and that for India, the sample is representative of the literate population. For a country with a population of nearly 1.4 billion and an estimated literate population of over a billion (if we assume the literacy rate is more than 77%), a sample size of even 5000 would seem minuscule.

Yet there is another aspect of the Morning Consult survey. Since it is a dynamic survey, it is interesting to note that Modi’s approval rating has remained consistently high. In early May 2021, it was 63% but since then it has been climbing steadily and now stands at 77%.

Morning Consult also tracks what it calls “Country Trajectories” where it asks respondents whether they would say that things in their country are going in the right direction or have gone off on the wrong track. In that survey, India scores well with the latest results showing that 75% of respondents saying that things are going well.

Kejriwal plays the “good guy” card in Gujarat campaign

He may not have the national stature required to challenge Narendra Modi or the BJP at the national level but Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, who heads AAP and is helming his party’s campaign in the forthcoming Gujarat state assembly elections, has always pitched development and policies aimed at bettering the lives of common citizens in his electoral strategies.

Even as he faced an attack by the BJP’s star campaigner in Gujarat, chief minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath, who labelled Kejriwal as a “sympathiser of terrorism”, the Delhi chief minister chose to go high when others went low. He emphasised that he and his party stood for development against the BJP’s  “politics of abuses and hooliganism”.

Kejriwal, whose party won a stunning victory over the BJP, the Congress and the Akali Dal in Punjab recently and runs the government there as well as in Delhi, used social media to state in Hindi: “If you want dirty abuses, hooliganism, corruption, or dirty politics, then vote for them. If you want schools, hospitals, electricity, water, roads, then vote for me.”

The Gujarat elections are scheduled for December 1-5. The BJP, which has been in power in the state for decades, has pulled out all stops in its campaign aimed at retaining power in the state where Prime Minister Modi was the chief minister for more than 12 years. But political analysts are watching how it will all pan out, especially with the gutsy, development-focused campaigning of AAP.

Protests at Apple’s biggest iPhone factory in China

The Covid virus’ resurgence in China has led to many instances of protests across the country. The protests are ostensibly against the strict lockdown measures that various cities are adopting. But one of the biggest protests has erupted in Zhengzhou, a city in central China with a population of 12.6 million. The protests are at the world’s biggest iPhone factory there.

The factory is run by Foxconn, which makes the iPhones for Apple Inc. and the protests broke out when the company locked down its factories preventing workers from leaving the premises. Videos circulating show hundreds of workers demonstrating and being confronted by guards and riot police in hazmat suits. It is alleged that workers were beaten by the police. Allegations have been flying about Foxconn not honouring the terms of its contract with workers after the outbreak of a fresh wave of Covid casesand that many new recruits were being forced to share dormitories with workers who were tested positive.

Foxconn has denied the allegations and said that it has taken all the necessary precautions to protect workers. Last month when Covid cases in the factory rose, the company locked down the facilities and that led to many workers breaking out and returning home. Foxconn is then believed to have recruited new workers offering them lucrative bonuses. Butworkers allege that Foxconn has not honoured terms of its contracts such as provision of food and other facilities.

Whatever the facts, it is a terrible PR disaster for Apple and the tech giant’s next moves in response will be watched closely.

Ire over Indian Islamic preacher in Qatar

Qatar, which is hosting the FIFA World Cup, has been in the eye of a storm after LGBTQ+ protests across the world broke out because of the country’s strict laws against homosexuality. Other controversies surrounding Qatar’s hosting of the World Cup included a global corruption scandal, the massive cost of building the necessary facilities, and serious human rights concerns about the country’s treatment of migrant workers.

But there is another controversy that dogs the country. Apparently, the controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik has been invited by Qatar to preach in the country. Naik is an Indian Islamic televangelist and public orator. In 2018, Naik was outlawed by India and accused of money laundering and hate speech that incited communal violence. Naik fled India and is based in Malaysia.

The Qatari government has denied that it had invited Naik but the Indian government is quite peeved that he is in Qatar to preach during the World Cup games.

Football follies in Kerala

The southern state of Kerala is probably one of the few states in India where football (and not cricket) rules. Kerala is football crazy and people there take the sport very seriously. So even as World Cup fever grips the world, there was a kerfuffle in Kerala when a man, Deepak Elangode, tore down a Portuguese flag that had been hoisted by fans of Cristiano Ronaldo, superstar footballer and captain of Portugal’s football team.

Elangode apparently mistook the flag for the emblem of a controversial Islamic group. He was arrested after enraged fans confronted him.
