Bihar Finance Min Slams Sushil Modi For Jet Remarks

Bihar Finance Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary on Thursday said that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sushil Kumar Modi’s remark on the purchase of a jet by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar shows the mentality of the BJP.

“You can understand what kind of mentality they (BJP) have. Earlier they had felt the need for it, but now when it has happened they feel that it’s done under pressure. If they had courage, they would have acknowledged that they too used to say it earlier,” Bihar Finance Minister Choudhary said on Sushil Modi’s remark in which he claimed the jet plane being purchased by the state government will be used for Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s dream of becoming Prime Minister in 2024.
Speaking to ANI, the BJP leader had said, “This 12-seater jet plane worth more than Rs 250 crore won’t be used in Bihar as the state has few runways, instead, it will be used for Nitish Kumar’s dream of becoming PM 2024, which anyway won’t be fulfilled. This plane is being purchased for him to travel across the country.”

Questioning the Bihar government’s decision to buy a jet plane, Sushil Modi further said that in Bihar there are only four runways (Patna, Darbhanga, Purnia, and Gaya), so there is no place for jets to land, then why is the government spending Rs 250 crore on it?

“Nitish Kumar didn’t buy it for 15 years and then why now? Are a helicopter and plane being gifted to Tejashwi Yadav?” asked Sushil Modi.

The BJP leader said that the Bihar government already has a plane that is operational.

He further said that the Bihar CM is doing this to make his face shine all over the country and to gift Tejashwi Yadav as there is no other purpose of buying it now.

“If you rent it, it will be much cheaper. In a poor state like Bihar there is no justification for spending Rs 350-400 crore on jet planes and helicopters,” said Sushil Modi.

The BJP leader said that the government does not have money to give to the kin of people who died because of spurious liquor but it has money to buy new aircraft.

“Nitish Kumar is refusing to give money to those who died of spurious liquor. The state government is saying that the condition of our treasury is bad. Our GST compensation has stopped but you are now buying jet planes to make your face shine and travel across the country which has no justification,” he added.

Earlier, on Tuesday, Additional Chief Secretary (Cabinet) S Siddharth said that the Bihar government has decided to buy a jet engine aircraft and an advanced helicopter to replace the faulty ones for the movement of top political executives and senior bureaucrats.

In the meeting, chaired by him, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar approved the civil aviation department’s proposal to purchase the new aircraft for long-distance travel and a helicopter in place of the outdated aircraft and faulty chopper for the government’s use. It was among the seven proposals that were discussed and approved by the Cabinet.

The old aircraft and helicopter will be used for training and tourism purposes after thorough repairs.

The process to purchase the new jet plane and the helicopter will start once the committee submits its report to the government. (ANI)

Rahul Violated Security Guidelines On 113 Occasions During Bharat Jodo: CRPF

A day after Congress wrote to Home Minister Amit Shah alleging breaches in the security of Rahul Gandhi, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) said the Congress leader violated security guidelines on 113 occasions since 2020 including in the Delhi leg of the ongoing Bharat Jodo Yatra.

The force has also said that it would be taking up this matter separately.
The CRPF’s reply was sent late at night on Wednesday after the Congress shot off a letter to Home Minister Amit Shah alleging that the security of its leader Rahul Gandhi was compromised during Bharat Jodo Yatra in the national capital and the accusing it of “completely” failing to control the surging crowd and maintaining a perimeter around the Z+ category protectee.

“It is pointed out that on several occasions violations of laid down guidelines on the part of Shri Rahul Gandhi have been observed and this fact has been communicated to him from time to time,” sources mentioned the points in reply by CRPF to Congress National General Secretary KC Venugopal.

“For instance, since 2020, there have been 113 violations observed and duly communicated. It may further be mentioned that during the Delhi leg of Bharat Jodo Yatra, the protectee has violated security guidelines and CRPF will be taking up this matter separately.”

The force said, “the security arrangements have been fully made for Mr. Rahul Gandhi as per the guidelines”.

“It may be pointed out that during visits of the protectee the required security arrangements are made by the CRPF in coordination with state police and security agencies as per guidelines.

“Advisories based on threat assessment have been issued by the MHA to all stakeholders concerned including the state governments. Advance Security Liaison (ASL) is also undertaken for every visit,” said the CRPF.

The Delhi leg of Bharat Jodo Padyatra for December 23, 2022, ASL involving all stakeholders was conducted on December 22, 2022, said the CRPF, adding “all security guidelines have been strictly followed and Delhi Police has informed that sufficient deployment of security personnel was made”.

Security arrangements made for the protectee work fine when the protectee himself adheres to the security guidelines laid down, the CRPF further added in its reply. (ANI)

Pathaan Song Controversy

Bigotry Is Being Passed As Religious Sentiment

Yusra Naqvi, a student of history in Jamia Millia Islamia University, says Shahrukh and Deepika have been targeted for not pandering to the powers that be

Amid the catastrophic rise in poverty and hunger index, inflation, violence, mass unemployment, delinquency and many more disturbing and important issues longing for public attention, the Indian media has been flooded of late with bigotry and frivolous claims over a song controversy in the film ‘Pathaan’.  Some Right-wing politicians and religious leaders have demanded that the movie should be banned and boycotted, owing to the saffron-coloured bikini worn by actress Deepika Padukone in the song, Besharam Rang, which, literally, means ‘shameless colour’. The song is accused of disrespecting the colour saffron which they reportedly consider as a symbol of the Sanatan Dharma.

The argument is apparently vague and unnecessary with a clear intention of spreading hatred by the religious appropriation of a universal colour which can be used by people of any community at their own will. The diffusion of cultures by intermingling of various sects and communities is indicative of a historically ‘shared’ Indian culture. Saffron is considered auspicious in many Islamic as well as other religious occasions and practices, hence, it cannot be symbolic of one religion in particular.

These claims represent a narrow and sectarian understanding of religion, as a whole, while reflecting, yet again, a sense of growing intolerance which aims at strengthening communal biases and hate politics.

ALSO READ: ‘Boycott Calls Won’t Work, Nor Will Vulgarity’

This ‘cancel culture’ has become a repetitive phenomenon in recent times, where certain titles, scenes or songs of movies have been called out for hurting the religious sentiments of people. However, in the present case, a female, and her exposed body, is being regarded as ‘obscene’, linking it to the prestige of saffron.

Such statements targeting women’s clothing in today’s world are deplorable and retrograde. Instead, why do we not vent our annoyance for films and songs promoting violence and the objectification of women? Indeed, the dogmatic justifications of meaningless claims are thus filled with bigotry and misogyny in the name of religious sentiments.

This can be seen as an attempt by the Right-wing ultra-nationalists to assert their ideological dominance in every sphere of public life and to impose their opinion by encouraging this forcible pattern of ‘cancel culture’. For this, they tend to choose specific celebrities who are seemingly easy to target based on past controversies.

For instance, no objection was meted out when a BJP supporter danced on a hit Bhojpuri song, wearing saffron robes. But, on the other hand, Shahrukh Khan, being a Muslim celebrity, is targeted for wearing a ‘green’ shirt.

Three years ago, just before the release of her movie Chapaak, Deepika Padukone was defamed as a ‘sympathiser of the Tukde-Tukde Gang’ when all she did was stand in solidarity with JNU students against the violence inflicted upon them by Right-wing masked goons inside the campus. This had barely anything to do with the theme of the film which was based on acid-attack survivors.

Similarly, the movie Pathaan has been dragged into controversy serving no other purpose than feeding the political interests of a particular group of people. In recent times, Indian cinema, always deeply secular and celebrating pluralism, was established with the sole purpose of entertainment while reflecting certain social narratives of contemporary India. It is now being misused as a means of spreading feelings of bitterness and contempt within the masses. We, as a society, need to condemn this practice and look beyond narrow horizons which restrict social harmony.

Elon Musk

New Twitter Policy To Follow, Question Science: Musk

Talking to Social media, Elon Musk on Wednesday announced that the new Twitter Policy will not only follow science but also question science, reasonably.

“New Twitter policy is to follow the science, which necessarily includes reasoned questioning of the science,” Musk tweeted.

Musk stated, “Anyone who says that criticizing them is doubting science itself cannot be regarded as a scientist,” in a follow-up tweet to his initial policy statement.

No further details of the plan are released as of yet.

Since Elon Musk has taken charge of Twitter as its CEO, he has been under the spotlight for his social media presence.

The Twitter CEO has finally spoken up about his promised resignation from his post after Monday’s poll. Taking to the microblogging site, Elon Musk tweeted, “I will resign as CEO as soon as I find someone foolish enough to take the job!”

The multi-billionaire added that subsequently, he will only run ‘the software & servers teams’.

The post garnered a number of reactions from netizens.

Twitter CEO Elon Musk on Monday, December 19, started a poll on the microblogging site, asking users if he should step down as head of the social media platform and also promising to abide by the result.

Taking to Twitter, Elon Musk said, “Should I step down as head of Twitter? I will abide by the results of this poll.”

Within a few minutes of Musk’s cryptic tweet, asking users if he should step down as head of the social media platform and also promising to abide by the result, the ‘yes’ votes started edging ahead, reaching up to 57.5 percent.

In reaction, Musk said, “As the saying goes, be careful what you wish, as you might get it.”

This poll comes after Twitter Sunday announced it would ban accounts used to promote other accounts on other specific social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and Mastodon.

Moreover, Twitter said that it still allows cross-posting content from any social media platform. “Posting links or usernames to social media platforms not listed above are also not in violation of this policy.”

The change in Twitter rules comes at a time when Musk has faced some criticism for major policy changes on the platform. (ANI)

Philippines Death Toll From Christmas Flood, Rain Rises To 26

The death toll from Christmas flood and rain in the Philippines has gone up to 25, Manila Times reported citing the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) on Thursday.

Northern Mindanao accounted for sixteen fatalities, followed by Bicol with five, Eastern Visayas with two, and Zamboanga city with two.
According to the Disaster Management Council, 26 have been reported missing.

The total number of affected people, or 102,476 families, increased to 393,069 people. Apparently, there are 292 evacuation shelters housing 81,443 people or 20,723 families, Manila Times reported.

The calamity not only wreaked havoc in the country but also pushed more than 45,000 people into evacuation centers for shelter. The fishermen who are reportedly missing went out to sea despite the dangers associated with bad weather, the disaster agency said.

The shear line’s rains caused floods and landslides on Christmas Eve, December 24, affecting nine of the province’s 14 municipalities.

A shear line is an area where warm and cold winds meet and lead to the formation of huge rain clouds, according to the country’s weather bureau, Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) which further stated that rain-induced landslides are likely in some areas.

Rescue efforts are still ongoing, and the impact on agriculture is being evaluated. (ANI)

Uzbekistan Claims Child Deaths From Indian Cough Syrup

As many as 18 children died of acute respiratory disease after having a cough syrup manufactured by an Indian pharmaceutical firm named Doc-Max, the Health Ministry of Uzbekistan has claimed.

In response to an email from ANI, seeking further details on the deaths, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said, “The WHO is in contact with the health authorities in Uzbekistan and is ready to assist in further investigations.”
Previously, 66 children had died in Gambia allegedly after consuming India-made cough syrups. However, the Gambian government denied any link between child deaths and the Indian cough syrups.

On the death of 66 children in Gambia, the Centre had recently informed the Rajya Sabha that the control samples of four cough syrups that allegedly led to the deaths in the African country were found to be of standard quality.

Bhagwant Khutba, Union Minister of State for Chemical and Fertiliser, in a written reply to a Rajya Sabha member, said, “As per the report of the Government Analyst, the samples have been declared to be of standard quality. The said samples were also found negative for both Diethylene Glycol (DEG) and Ethylene Glycol (EG).”

Kharge Rahul Gandhi

BJP Has Huge Washing Machine: Kharge

Attacking the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday said the ruling party at the Centre has a “huge washing machine” that can clean even the “biggest stains”.

During an event celebrating the 138th Foundation Day of Congress, the party chief said, “BJP has a huge washing machine that can clean even the biggest stains. When people are put into this machine they come out clean. We all have to fight together to save democracy. It is a government of liars at the Centre.”
Referring to the party’s Bharat Jodo Yatra, Kharge said the mass outreach march was an attempt to counter the “hatemongering” by the BJP.

“Bharat Jodo Yatra is an attempt to fight against the atmosphere of hate being created by them (BJP) in the country. A notice was sent to Rahul Gandhi telling him that such events should not be held due to COVID-19 but Prime Minister is attending many public events,” added Kharge.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Congress chief targeted the BJP government during his address at the party headquarters in New Delhi and said the basic principles of India are being constantly attacked.

He said that society is being divided by hate, people are hit by price rises and unemployment but the government is not bothered.

“The basic principles of India are under constant attack. A pit of hatred is being dug all over the country. People are in trouble due to inflation, unemployment but the government does not care,” Kharge said.

He further appealed to people to join the Bharat Jodo Yatra.

Indian National congress was founded on December 28, 1885, in Bombay (Mumbai). Every year on December 28, the party celebrates its foundation day.

Notably, Congress has got a non-Gandhi president after 24 years. In 1998, Sonia Gandhi was made congress president and in 2017 Rahul Gandhi was elected as the party chief but he resigned from the post after the poll debacle in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. (ANI)
