Civil Volunteers Rescue Strays

Civilian Volunteers Unite To Rescue Strays, Cattle Stuck In Delhi Flood

A collective effort from animal lovers in Delhi saved the day for hundreds of animals stranded in Yamuna floodplains when waters rose to an alarming level on July 12. In all, over 400 cattle and 450 strays were rescued from the Yamuna Khadar area over three days of efforts and grit.

It all began with a routine call to an animal helpline which said that there were some dogs and cattle stranded in the Yamuna Khadar area, adjoining Delhi-Noida link road after the heavy rains.

A chance site visit revealed the extent of the disaster. Water had risen cutting off whole areas and leaving animals alone and desperate in areas from where humans had already been evacuated. Immediately, a network of animal lovers got created via text messages and calls, summoning help from wherever it might be available. NDRF officials were helped by a bevy of civil volunteers who risked high waters to rescue dogs stuck on trees, roofs or swimming to save their lives.

That same night brought news of animal shelters being submerged. Overnight, volunteers evacuated 350 dogs from one shelter, carrying them through chest-high water to waiting trucks, and 100 dogs from another.

Cattle would prove an even bigger challenge. A gaushala with 400 cows seemed an impossible task but on July 13th with waters reaching an all-time high of 50 years, teams of gausevaks working all night with NDRF veterans moved them to higher ground.

Local administrations were besieged with requests for boats as huge numbers of volunteers arrived at every affected area. Disaster relief planners who had never before taken into account the need to plan for animal evacuations were forced to take stock. Social media was abuzz with visuals of abandoned cattle, desperate dogs, terrified cats, and even rabbits and guinea pigs who needed help.

Expert catchers from Friendicoes, quite literally, jumped into and led the rescue efforts. Gaurav Dar was here, there, and everywhere, organising and cheering on the teams. Sanjay Mohapatra, Tarana Singh, Rashim Sharma, Ayesha Christina, Puneeta, and Abhijeet were other heroes of the day.

Mrs. Ambika Shukla [Trustee], Anushka Chowdhary, and Noor Verma, PFA provided on-ground as well as back-end support as they relentlessly liaised with the administration for boats and tractors.

Cheers go up as six dogs, three goats, and a little pup are offloaded. ‘Everyone’s exhausted but no one is going to stop until the last animal is safely out,’ sums up volunteer Anurag Mahajan.

Opposition Unity Meet Begins In Bengaluru

Congress general secretary KC Venugopal on Monday hit out at the ruling BJP-led government at the Centre accusing it of misusing probe agencies for its political ends and said that the meeting of opposition parties in Bengaluru  “will be a game-changer” for India’s politics.

Addressing a press conference here as opposition parties gather in Bengaluru for the meeting, Venugopal alleged that the BJP wants to “silence the voice of opposition” and said disqualification of party leader Rahul Gandhi from Lok Sabha and developments in Maharashtra are examples.
Congress leaders Jairam Ramesh and Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar also addressed the press conference.

Venugopal said the opposition parties had a successful meeting in Patna on June 23.

The disqualification of Rahul Gandhi from the Parliament is one of the biggest examples of that. The incident happening in Maharashtra is also an example…”

Kanwariyas Protest Over Seizure

Kanwariyas Protest Over Seizure Of DJ Vehicle In Jaipur

A large number of Kanwariya pilgrims on Sunday staged a sit-in protest outside a police station in Rajasthan’s Jaipur after police personnel seized their DJ vehicle from the Jaipur-Ajmer Highway on Sunday.

Kanwariyas were coming from Maleshwar Dham on Sunday when they were stopped, and their DJ vehicle was seized by police near Bagru village in Jaipur.
After the police seized that DJ the pilgrims got furious. The tension spread to the surrounding areas and other groups of Kanwariya assembled together at the police station and started protesting. Along with the pilgrims, villagers also participated in the demonstration.

To avoid any untoward incident during the protest, heavy police forces from six stations including Bagru, Bhankrota, SEZ, Bindayaka, Kalwad, and Karnivihar were deployed. Riot control vehicles and additional police force including Bagru, Bhankrota, SEZ, Bindayaka, Kalwad, and Kaand Ranivihar were also present during the demonstration at the police station.

Former Pradhan Kailash Kumawat, Bagru Nagar Vyapar Mandal President Ravi Ganesh Agarwal, former Zilla Parishad member Gopal Meena, Kamal Tilyawas, former Municipal Vice President Shankar Gared, Councilor Nitin Bhardwaj, Giriraj Chowdhary, Sonu Kumawat, Lakhan Gadhiwal, Dahmi Kala Sarpanch Ganesh Kumawat, Subhash Dhasania were also present along with the Kanwariya pilgrims during the protest.

Bagru ACP Anil Sharma reached the spot to settle the matter by talking to the Kanwariyas. However, the Kanwariyas demanded that the DJ vehicle should be released, and they should be allowed to use it during the Yatra.

The Kavadis alleged that the police do not stop DJs from playing in political programs but they do so when DJs are played in religious functions.

The police then cited the orders of the Jaipur Police Commissionerate that mandated DJs to be banned based on which the police had taken action against them.

The demonstration was finally called off after four hours during which several rounds of talks were held between the police and the Kanwariya pilgrims.

“There is a complete ban on the use of DJ system, but the Kanawariyas were found playing DJ system on a vehicle and on the basis of which the action was taken,” Anil Sharma, ACP, Bagru said. (ANI)

Mahasa Amini

Iran’s ‘Morality Police’ Returns With Stricter Hijab Rules

Months after the nationwide arrests that were carried out after the Anti-Hijab protests, Iran has relaunched patrols by the ‘morality police’ in a bid to escalate their efforts to enforce the country’s mandatory hijab rules, Al Jazeera reported.

Saeid Montazeralmahdi, the spokesperson for the Iranian law enforcement force, confirmed on Sunday that police patrols were now operational on foot and with vehicles to crack down on people whose covering is not deemed appropriate in the Islamic Republic.
The morality police would “issue warnings and then introduce to the judicial system people who unfortunately insist on their norm-breaking behaviour without concern for the consequences of their covering that is outside of the norm”, Al Jazeera quoted Montazeralmahdi as saying citing state media.

He further said that the police expect everyone to conform to accepted dress codes so officers will have more time to deal with “other vital police missions”.

The officers are tasked with warning women – and sometimes men – to correct the way they are dressed.

This could range from ordering women to adjust headscarves to demanding a change of clothing to something that is more loose-fitting and deemed more appropriate. Women who are found to be in breach of the rules could be arrested and taken to ‘so-called’ re-education facilities run by the police, Al Jazeera reported.

Notably, this development comes 10 months after Mahsa Amini, 22, died in police custody after being detained over an alleged dress code violation.

Her death sparked mass protests across the country that lasted for months in which morality police were largely absent from Iranian streets.

After the protests, Iranian authorities had largely refrained from highly confrontational methods of enforcing mandatory hijab laws that were imposed shortly after the country’s 1979 Islamic revolution, Al Jazeera reported.

However, that approach appears to be gradually shifting now.

For the past few months, police have been employing surveillance cameras to identify hijab violators. They are given warnings, fines or sent to appear in court. People found to be in violation of the dress code while in their vehicles could have their cars impounded.

Businesses have also been increasingly targeted, with many cafes, restaurants and even sprawling shopping centres facing closures for offering services to women with loose hijabs.

There were several high-profile, hijab-related incidents this week, as per Al Jazeera.

The authorities released a video that showed a group of police officers – accompanied by a camera crew – going around and telling women of all ages to fix their hijab. The camera zooms in on the women’s unblurred faces and shows an animation indicating they have been identified and referred to the judiciary.

“Either you fix your hijab or you enter the van,” a man, whose voice has been digitally distorted, tells a young woman in the video. “If you believe in freedom, I will leave all the thieves and rapists free to let you know how things work,” Al Jazeera reported.

Another incident took place on Sunday when actor Mohamad Sadeghi was arrested. He had released a reaction video online a day earlier, in which he responds to another clip that showed a female officer holding a woman against the wall over her wearing of the hijab.

“If I see a scene like this in person I might commit murder. Watch out, you better believe the people will kill you,” he had said, prompting his arrest for “threatening the police” for doing its job, Al Jazeera reported citing the state media.

Earlier this week, actress Azadeh Samadi was sentenced to a six-month ban on using social media and her mobile phone in addition to mandated therapy to cure her of an “anti-social personality sickness” by a court.

This came after she participated in the funeral of a theatre director without a headscarf in May.

Samadi joined a group of actresses who have been summoned or received sentences in recent months for ditching their headscarves publicly or online.

Meanwhile, the government and the parliament have been working on legislation aimed at bolstering hijab controls, but the bill has come under fire from conservative opponents who argue it is too lenient, Al Jazeera reported. (ANI)

Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, and Praful Patel along with their MLAs reach YB Chavan Centre in Mumbai to meet NCP President Sharad Pawar

Chhagan Bhujbal, Aditi Tatkare, and Hasan Mashrif were among those who arrived at the center.

Reacting to the meeting between the two factions, Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis said,” For years Sharad Pawar was their leader, so they must have gone to meet him, no big deal in it.”

Earlier, Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar met Nationalist Congress Party Chief Sharad Pawar’s wife Pratibha Pawar on Saturday and said that he has the right to visit his family.

“I hold all the rights to meet my family. My aunt (Pratibha Pawar) was not keeping well and was hospitalised, so I went to meet her after she was discharged,” he said.

In a major Cabinet expansion in the Eknath Shinde-led government soon after the inclusion of nine MLAs of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), new Deputy CM Ajit Pawar has been entrusted with finance and planning ministries.

UPA For Nadda

UPA Stands For Utpidan, Pakshpat, Atyachar: Nadda

Bharatiya Janata Party National President JP Nadda on Sunday took a swipe at the Congress saying that UPA stands for “utpidan, pakshpat and atyachar” (oppression, biasedness and atrocity” while his party is trying to protect the culture.

“We are trying to protect the culture and do development work, but there is an obstacle in that development, that is oppression, tyranny, favouritism and corruption within the Rajasthan government by CM Ashok Gehlot. In UPA – U stands for oppressive government. P – partisan government. A-tyrannical government,” Nadda said while addressing a public gathering in Jairpur.
Addressing a rally after launching the BJP’s “Nahi Sahega Rajasthan” campaign against the Congress government, Nadda called the Ashok Gehlot government a rule of “loot”.

“This government loots and tortures people and has broken all records of atrocities against Dalits, tribals, women, children and the poor. This is a government of looters, atrocities and misrule,” he added.

He further claimed that more than 8,000 cases have been registered against Dalits here in 2022.

“In 2022 alone, more than 8,000 cases have been registered against Dalits here. The Rajasthan government has done the work of demolishing the houses of refugees from Pakistan with bulldozers in furtherance of favouritism and vote bank politics. The Gehlot government is also doing the work of settling Rohingyas here,” the BJP President said.

He further said that the Gehlot government has no right to be in power even for a minute.

“Now-a-days a new scam is being done by the opposition, that is PDA i.e. Patriotic Democratic Alliance whereas I call PDA as Protection Of Dynasties Alliance i.e. it is a way to save familyism,” Nadda said.

Nadda further said that his party will come to the power in the state when the assembly polls which are scheduled to take place at the end of the year will be conducted.

“We have decided that under the ‘Nahi Sahega Rajasthan’ campaign, we will work to reach 2 crore people, convey the message of the party to the public and a corruption-free, development-oriented government will be formed in Rajasthan,” he said. (ANI)

I’ve Never Paid Heed To ‘Log Kya Kahenge’: Kajol

Kajol is not only a versatile actor but also an influential icon with her thoughts touching people, especially women. In a career spanning over three decades, she has always come across as a headstrong individual who lives her life the way she wants to.

In an interview with ANI, the ‘DDLJ’ star spoke about how her maternal lineage helped her become a strong person.
“I have never paid heed to ‘log kya kahenge’ in my life. I was raised by a wonderful mother. I was raised by a mother who did not give two hoots about society. Actually, I had a wonderful maternal lineage. From my great-grandmother to my grandmother and my mother, every one of them has always behaved and taught me by example that nobody else matters, your life is your responsibility and nobody else’s opinion matters on that,” Kajol said.

Kajol does not believe in giving someone else the steering wheel of life.

“Firstly, take responsibility for your life…your actions are your own not dictated by society. Secondly, at the end of the day, society will have to accept what you make out of your life and that’s how my great-grandmother and grandmother lived their lives. Both of them had amazingly different opinions on life and the world. My mother literally lives her life till today. I am trying to live my life like them,” she added.

Kajol was born to legendary actress Tanuja and late director Shomu Mukherjee on August 5, 1974. Tanuja’s mother Shobhana Samarth was also an actress and her father was producer Kumarsen Samarth.

Kajol in 2020 dropped a beautiful collage on social media, throwing light on her family lineage.

The collage features the actor, her mother Tanuja, late maternal grandmother Shobhna Samarth and late aunt Nutan, all of whom have had an illustrious career in Indian cinema.

“Who I came from… the true feminists! #strongwomen #livelearnlove,” she captioned the post.

Meanwhile, on the work front, Kajol is being lauded for her performance in the web show ‘The Trial – Pyaar, Kaanoon, Dhokha’, which is helmed by Suparn Varma.

The courtroom drama is the Indian adaptation of ‘The Good Wife’, which starred Julianna Margulies in the lead role. Kajol plays Noyonika Sengupta, a housewife who starts practising law again when her husband’s public scandal puts him in prison.

Driven to prove herself in the competitive world of law and navigating her way through complicated relationships while seeking justice for her husband, Noyonika treads through tough challenges served by her fate.

Talking about the show, Kajol said, “The complexities are what defines a character to me and the layers surrounding Noyonika are what spoke to me when this role first came over. Noyonika felt personal, I instantly felt protective about her and that reaffirmed my faith in choosing ‘The Trial – Pyaar, Kanoon, Dhoka’ to be my first step into the long format. Suparn Varma has built a world where the vulnerability of characters meets the cruel situations posed by life.”

Jisshu Sengupta, Kubbra Sait, Sheeba Chaddha, Alyy Khan, and Gaurav Pandey are also a part of ‘The Trial’. (ANI)
