Anupam Kher on kashmir files

Close Your Eyes If You Can’t See Truth: Kher Over IFFI Jury’s Statement

Veteran actor Anupam Kher, who played the protagonist in the blockbuster ‘The Kashmir Files’, which documents the alleged genocide and exodus of Kashmiri Pandits from the Valley, on Tuesday spoke up on the raging controversy over the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) jury head and Israeli filmmaker Nadav Lapid’s statement calling the film ‘a propaganda’ and ‘vulgar’ at the festival’s closing ceremony on Monday.

Taking to Instagram, the actor, who recently appeared in the Sooraj R. Barjatiya directorial ‘Uunchai’, dropped a video on Instagram saying that some people can’t stomach ‘Kashmir’s truth’.

In his short video address on the social media platform, Kher said, “Friends, some people are not in the habit of showing the truth as it is. They like to give it a certain colour or cover up the truth in the name of creative liberty. The fact is that some people are not being able to digest Kashmir’s truth. They try to show Kashmir through a different cinematic lens and have been at it for the last 25-30 years. ‘The Kashmir Files’ has exposed them.”

He added, “They are having problems because the film documents the truth as it is. If you cannot see the truth, keep your eyes closed and your mouth shut. Stop making fun of it. This is our truth and we have lived through it.”

The veteran actor, who drew high praise for his performance in the film, said without taking names, “We, along with our daughters and sisters personally experienced those days. The scars are yet to heal. This truth is a part of our lives. Go and ask the ones who have been affected by it. India and Israel are friends and both countries are affected by terrorism. A common Israeli would understand the pain of Kashmiri Hindus. But, every country has traitors.”

He tagged his video post with a message that read, “The truth of Kashmir files is stuck like a thorn in the throat of some people. They are not able to swallow it or spit it out! Their soul, which is dead, is shattered badly to prove this truth false. But this film of ours is now a movement, not a movie. People’s consciousness has awakened. The desperate #Toolkit gang keeps trying millions. #TheKashmirFiles #Truth #TruthPrevails”.

Addressing the closing ceremony of the 53RD IFFI, Lapid termed ‘The Kashmir Files’ a ‘propaganda, vulgar film’, adding that he was ‘shocked’ to see the film in the competition section of such a prestigious film festival.

“If the holocaust was right then the exodus of Kashmiri pandits is also right. This (Lapid’s statement) seems pre-planned as immediately after, the tool-kit gang became active. It’s shameful for him to make a statement like this as he comes from a community whose members suffered the horrors of the holocaust,” Kher told ANI on Tuesday.

“By making a statement like this, he has also hurt the holocaust survivors. I wish God gives him (Lapid) the wisdom so that he doesn’t use our tragedy to peddle his agenda on stage,” the veteran actor added.

Kher also tweeted on Lapid’s statement, saying, “No matter how high the height of the lie is.. It is always small in comparison to the truth.”

The veteran actor also juxtaposed images of ‘The Kashmir Files’ and Steven Spielberg’s ‘Schindler’s List’ in his tweet to drive home his point.

ANI contacted the festival organisers but they refused any comments on the jury head’s statement. (ANI)

Pallavi Joshi on IFFI

Creative Forums Used For Agenda Politics: Pallavi Joshi On IFFI Row

Actor-producer Pallavi Joshi, who starred and part-produced ‘The Kashmir Files’, on Tuesday, opened up on the snowballing controversy over Israeli filmmaker and IFFI Jury Head Nadav Lapid labeling the blockbuster as ‘a propaganda’ and a ‘vulgar’ film.

Taking to her Instagram handle, the actor, who also bank-rolled ‘The Tashkent Files’, posted, “For decades, the international community remained silent on the sufferings of the Kashmiri Pandit Community. After 3 decades, the Indian film industry finally realized that it needs to tell India’s story truthfully and objectively.”

“Vivek (Agnihotri, the director of ‘The Kashmir Files’) and I were always aware that there are elements that would not like to see the stark truth on the screen, but it is very unfortunate that a creative platform was used for a political agenda to preserve an old, false and jaded narrative about Kashmir,” the 53-year-old actor wrote.

Coming down hard on the Israeli filmmaker while thanking those who jumped to the film’s defence on social media, the ‘Trishagni’ actress added, “We are overwhelmed by the way people of India rose to defend ‘The Kashmir Files’ against the rude and vulgar statements of a genocide denier.”

Joshi went on to ‘assure the audience’ that ‘The Kashmir Files’ was. indeed, ‘a people’s film’.

She added that her production house ‘I Am Buddha’ foundation “stands for India” and “will continue on the path of truth and resilience to keep making meaningful cinema with original Indian content”.

Addressing the closing ceremony of the 53rd Internation Film Festival of India (IFFI) on Monday, Lapid said he was ‘shocked’ to see the film in the competition section of such a prestigious film festival.

A video clip of the closing ceremony, showing the Israeli helmer making the controversial remarks, went viral on social media.

His statement drew a fierce backlash from netizens, as well as actors Anupam Kher and Darshan Kumaar, who portrayed key roles in the film.

Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit and Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) vice president Abhinav Prakash, too, lashed out at the Israeli filmmaker over his statement.

The film, which is a portrayal of the alleged genocide and exodus of Kashmiri Pandits from the Valley in the 90s, was released earlier this year and went on to become a major blockbuster. (ANI)

NSA Doval on religion threat

Cross-Border, ISIS-Inspired Terrorism Continue To Pose Threat: NSA Doval

National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval on Tuesday highlighted that cross-border terrorism and ISIS-inspired terrorism continues to pose a threat to humanity.

Addressing a conference in the national capital on the role of Ulema in fostering a culture of Interfaith Peace and Social harmony in India and Indonesia, Doval said “As you all are aware, both our countries have been victims of terrorism and separatism. While we have overcome the challenges to a considerable extent, the phenomenon of cross-border and ISIS-inspired terrorism continues to pose a threat. Cooperation of the civil society is essential in countering the threat from ISIS-inspired individual terror cells and returnees from theatres like Syria and Afghanistan.”
The national security advisor said that the aim of today’s discussion is to bring together Indian and Indonesian Ulema and scholars who can take forward the cooperation in promoting tolerance, harmony and peaceful co-existence.

“This will bolster the fight against violent extremism, terrorism and radicalisation,” Doval said.

“None of the ends for which extremism, radicalisation and the misuse of religion are employed are justifiable on any ground. This is a distortion of religion against which all of us need to raise our voices. Extremism and terrorism is against the very meaning of Islam because Islam means peace and well-being (Salamati/Asalaam). Opposition to such forces should not be painted as a confrontation with any religion. That is a ruse”, he said.

“Instead, we should focus on the real message of our religions, which stands for the values of humanism, peace and understanding. Indeed, as the Holy Quran itself teaches, killing one person is like killing all humanity and saving one is akin to saving humanity. Islam ordains that the most excellent form of Jihad is ‘Jihad Afzal’ – that is, Jihad against one’s senses or ego- and not against innocent civilians,” Doval further said.

Top Indonesian minister Mohammed Mahfud MD is in Delhi on the invitation of National Security Advisor Doval.

Mahfud, the Coordinating Minister for the Political, Legal, and Security Affairs of Indonesia is accompanied by a high-level delegation of Ulema.

Visiting Ulema from Indonesia will also be interacting with their Indian counterparts. The discussion will be on the ‘Role of Ulema in fostering a culture of interfaith peace and social harmony in India and Indonesia’.

“Ulema play a very important role in Islamic society and the objective of such discussion is to bring together Indian and Indonesian Ulema and scholars who can take forward the cooperation to promote tolerance, harmony and peaceful co-existence and counter violent extremism and radicalization,” a source told ANI.

There will be three sessions, first on Islam: Continuity and Change, second on Harmonizing inter-faith society: Practice and Experience and last session will be on Countering Radicalization and Extremism in India and Indonesia.

During the visit, Ulema from Indonesia will also be interacting with leaders from other faiths. Indonesia has the world’s largest Muslim population.

NSA Doval had visited Indonesia for the second Indo- Indonesia security dialogue in March this year. NSA then invited minister Mehfud to India. (ANI)

Shraddha Aaftab's Case

Shraddha Case: Aaftab’s Ordered Meals Reduced After May

Early in May this year, Shraddha Walkar finally decided to part ways with her live-in partner Aaftab Amin Poonawala, which did not go well with the latter who resorted to murdering her in a well-thought-out manner and not due to sudden provocation, according to circumstantial evidence collected by Delhi Police, say sources.

Apart from this, the Delhi Police team probing the death case has found bloodstains in Aaftab’s flat- including from its bathroom, kitchen, and bedroom, sources said on Tuesday.
A total of 13 pieces of bones including a jawbone have so far been recovered from Gurugram and Delhi and tests by Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) will be conducted to confirm whether they belong to a human being, sources said.

“13 bones recovered so far. Some other items have also been found, which will be examined by Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL). Some parts were also found on the border of Delhi Gurugram. A jaw has also been found. Some weapons have been found in the jungle and Aaftab’s flat. With which weapon she was cut, it will be known after the CFSL report,” said Delhi Police sources.

Police have also formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the matter, said sources on Tuesday.

The Police team has recovered some weapons from the rented Chattarpur residence of Aaftab and from the forested areas on the border of Delhi and Gurugram. The weapons will also be sent for forensic analysis.

Some clothes have been recovered and it is conjectured that these were the same that were worn by Shraddha and Aaftab on the day of the murder, sources said adding that these clothes will be sent for forensic analysis.

The police have also contacted Whatsapp, Facebook, Instagram, Google, Google Pay, and Paytm over email to access details of Aaftab’s internet history. Paytm has provided its reply, Zomato’s response showed that Aftab was ordering food for two people and that after some time the food orders showed only the food quantity being ordered was for one person alone.

The police have asked for details from the dating app, where Aftab and Shraddha met three years ago.

Evidence also suggested that during the time of the murder both Aaftab and Shraddha were present in the flat, sources said.

The Police, however, is yet to recover Shraddha’s mobile phone

Aaftab is accused of strangling to death his live-in partner Shraddha and chopping her body into 35 pieces in May this year. He is also alleged to have preserved the chopped body parts in a refrigerator before dumping them in forested areas in Delhi and Gurugram.

The police have also found some clothes of Aaftab and Shraddha and sent them to CFSL for investigation, sources said on Tuesday.

“These seem to be the same clothes that were used at the time of the incident, which will be clear from the rest of the CFSL report,” it said.

The Police have also found blood stains in the bathroom, kitchen, and bedroom of the Aaftab’s house.

The sources further said that only a report by CFSL can ascertain when Shraddha was killed.

“Aaftab has said that he killed Shraddha on May 18 but the police have not accepted it. Her body has not been found and a post-mortem was not conducted. The biggest challenge before the police is to ascertain exactly when was Shraddha murdered. Nothing can be said unless and until the CFSL report on this comes. This is a very scientific case and everything depends on the scientific report. The CFSL report is awaited,” said sources.

Sources also said that Aaftab appeared to be very confident during his questioning and he was responding to questions very fast and in a relaxed manner.

“Delhi Police has formed an SIT. The search is still going on in the jungle and everywhere where there is any chance of recovery of the bones and other things. The report of the polygraph test has not been received yet, the polygraph test only gives an idea of whether the accused is speaking the truth or not. Narco test is also not normally admissible in law, however, if there is any recovery through the narco test it is admissible in the court. There may be some more chances of recovery through the narco test,” sources said.

According to sources, Shraddha wanted to leave Aaftab and both had decided on May 3 or 4 that they would separate and live separately.

“This did not go down well with Aaftab who felt that Shraddha would get involved with someone else,” they said.

The sources further said that there is no suspicion of the role of Aaftab’s friend Badri, who suggested to the pair a place to stay.

“Delhi Police does not have any eyewitnesses, this is the biggest problem in the case,” sources added.

Meanwhile, Delhi Court on Tuesday gave permission to Delhi Police to conduct a narco test on Aaftab Amin Poonawala on December 1.

Special CP (law and order) Sagar Preet Hooda had earlier today said that Delhi Police will seek permission from the court for the test.

Notably, the Delhi Police solved the six-month-old blind murder case and arrested Aaftab Amin Poonawala on November 12 this year on the basis of Shraddha’s father’s complaint. Acting on a complaint from Shraddha’s father the Delhi Police registered an FIR on November 10.

Aaftab and Shraddha met on a dating site and later moved in together at a rented accommodation in Chhatarpur.

Delhi Police interrogation revealed that Aaftab killed Shraddha on May 18 and later started planning on disposing off her body. He told police that he had read about human anatomy so that it could help him in the chopping of the body. Police said that Aaftab, after doing a search of the shopping mode Google, cleaned blood stains from the floor with some chemicals and disposed of stained clothes. (ANI)

Agnihotri On Controversy At IFFI

Prove Film Wrong, Will Quit Filmmaking: Agnihotri On Controversy At IFFI

Bollywood director Vivek Agnihotri, on Tuesday, reacted to the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) Jury Head Nadav Lapid’s statement calling ‘The Kashmir Files’ a “propaganda and vulgar” film at the festival’s closing ceremony.

Taking to Instagram, director Vivek shared a video, which he captioned, “Terror supporters and Genocide deniers can never silence me. Jai Hind. #TheKashmirFiles #ATrueStory.”
https://www.instagram.com/p/ClioxwwD2he/embed

Vivek Agnihotri said in a video, “Yesterday at IFFI, a jury member called ‘The Kashmir Files’ a propaganda and a vulgar film. This is not a new thing for me, because these types of comments are being made by many terrorist organizations, urban naxals, and the people who want to divide India. But what surprises me the most is, that this narrative of dividing Kashmir from India by some terrorists was supported on stage at an event organized by the Government of India.”

Nadav Lapid had called ‘The Kashmir Files’ a “propaganda, vulgar film”, adding that he was “shocked” to see the film in the competition section of such a prestigious film festival. A video from the festival went viral in which Lapid is seen criticizing the film.

“Who are these people? These are the same people who called this film propaganda since the day I started working on the film. This film was made after interviewing more than 700 people whose family members were cut into pieces and gang raped. Were all those people talking propaganda or vulgar? The land where once Hindus were in majority has no Hindus today, and many Hindus are killed every other day. Is it propaganda or vulgarity? Yaseen Malik accepted his terrorism and he is in jail today. Is this propaganda or vulgarity?” Vivek added.

Lapid’s remarks did not go down well with many. Actors Anupam Kher and Darshan Kumaar, who played key roles in ‘The Kashmir Files’ along with filmmaker Ashoke Pandit and Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) Vice President Abhinav Prakash were among the people who condemned the controversial comments

Vivek further said, “I challenge all these urban naxals and the legendary filmmaker who came from Israel, that if they can prove any single shot, event or dialogue is not completely true then I will quit filmmaking. Who are these people who stand up against India every time? These are the same people who never allowed Moplah’s and Kashmir’s truth to come out. These are the same people who were selling burning pyres for just some dollars, and now when I announced my next film ‘The Vaccine War’ they are standing against it also, but I am not afraid, do whatever you want to do but I will fight.”

‘The Kashmir Files’ was released earlier this year in theatres and it told the story of the Hindu exodus in the 1990s and targeted killings of the Kashmiri Pandits.

The movie went on to become one of the highest-grossing Bollywood movies of 2022 and Anupam Kher received acclaim for his performance. (ANI)

Iran Football Team

Damned If They Sing, Damned If They Don’t…

There were boos and jeers in their second match, as some of them, seemingly reluctant, mumbled the national anthem. Others tried to sing along half-heartedly, while still others kept their lips sealed, bravely. This was a difficult moment, even as a young woman held a placard which said, ‘Mahsa Amini – 22’, the woman’s eyes painted with the red tears of blood. A young man unfurled a banner – ‘Women, Life, Freedom’, (Zen, Zindagi, Azadi, in Persian), the slogan now popular all over Iran and across the world.

Taking a political stand in a public platform as big as the FIFA World Cup is not easy. No banners or placards are allowed inside the stadiums with political messages. Iranian official TV had censored the national anthem episode in the first match against England, in a country which loves soccer with unimaginable passion, including girls and women who are still not allowed to watch a match in a football stadium.

Jafar Panahi, a great filmmaker who made ‘Offside’, on how some young girls sneak into an all-male world cup qualifier in Tehran disguised as boys, and are caught and placed in confinement, is now rotting in jail, along with other eminent filmmakers, intellectuals, writers, journalists and thousands of women.

No one knows how many have been killed in the last few weeks of raging protests – 350 plus according to reports – most of them women, many of them teenage girls. A famous international footballer, Voria Ghafouri, also a Kurdish like Mahsa, who spoke in support of the protesting women, was picked up. Top actor Hengameh Ghaziani was arrested, according to official news agency, IRNA. Ghaziani, 52, had posted a video in her Instagram account without a hijab, in an open act of defiance, something women are doing on traffic crossings, classrooms, public squares, airports, metro stations, all the time, even while cops are opening fire indiscriminately. Ghaziani wrote on Instagram: “Maybe this will be my last post. From this moment on, whatever happens to me, know that as always, I am with Iranian people until my last breath.” Earlier, another top actress, Taraneh Alidoosti, posted a pictue without the hijab, while holding a placard saying: Women, Life, Freedom.

If this is not infinite courage, then what is?

The arrests sparked outrage which intensified the movement, even as the 40th day after the funerals have turned into a mass uprising against the dictatorship, with slogans, singing, dancing, poetry, street theatre, graffiti, and endless marches by tens of thousands across campuses and public spaces, including by school girls and boys. The rebellion against compulsory hijab and brutality of morality police, and the murder of young Mahsa is a spark which has ignited a peaceful, spontaneous revolution. Even as ‘Baraya’, the sublime song of existential and political angst of daily life, has become an alternative anthem, while the singer too has been picked up.

That is why, imagine the psychological condition of the footballers of Iran, playing a high-pressure game in a world cup. Their hearts beat fiercely for their people, and women, but they know that a sinister regime is waiting for their return. They are damned if they sing, damned if they do not sing.

Give it to them, the Football Team of Iran is a supremely brave team. They stood firm with the ground beneath their feet, their eyes closed or moist, their collective lips sealed, as the national anthem played – against the match in England. This was a silent protest which made rivers of tears flow inside the stadium and across the world. This was a silent protest which triggered a wave of global adulation for this exemplary act of courage. Even while the English captain chose not to wear the protest arm-band, the sword of FIFA hanging on his head.

What is it that touches a chord deep inside millions of hearts, like a magical, musical symphony, or, creates a brilliant, sparkling moment of idealism, or, even a soul-stirring syndrome of sudden sadness in soliloquy? What is that micro moment, which, in a flashing fraction, becomes a spectre, a revelation, a silent prayer, a song in chorus, sung inside the heart? What is it that strikes an invisible chord, even if it might not turn the world upside down, but you know that something sublime, enlightened and deeply stirring has happened, in hope or despair, great ecstasy or collective tragedy!

And what did the Iranian captain say? “My condolences to all the mourning families in Iran… We stand with them and share their pain… We must accept that conditions in our country are not right and our people are not happy… My people are sad and our presence here does not mean that we cannot be a voice for them or should not respect them,” captain Ehsan Hajsafi said.

“We have to accept that the situation in our country is not good and that our people are not happy, there is discontent,” he said, addressing a press meet. “We are here, but it does not mean we should not be their voice or that we should not respect them. Whatever we have is theirs. We have to perform the best we can and score goals and dedicate those goals to the people of Iran who are feeling hurt.”

Some struggles become immortal. Remember the murder of George Floyd — choked to death? How his last words, “I can’t breathe,” became a universal cry of angst and anger of not only the Afro-American community, but all those who believed that white supremacism and racism is destroying American democracy, even as predatory capitalism has entrenched a handful of obscenely super-rich billionaires, while millions struggle to make two ends – especially during and after the pandemic.

The Black Lives Matter movement rocked America, resurrecting the heady memories of the non-violent struggles waged by Martin Luther King, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s Satyagraha. It too struck a chord which became an oceanic undercurrent against established racism in American society, which has routinely tried to eliminate the gory history of genocide of native Indians, as the invading whites conquered land and territory with relentless brutality.

As the Black Lives Movement spread, most city council members in Minneapolis, where George Floyd was killed, promised to disband the city’s police department. In Los Angeles, the mayor proposed to cut the police budget by $150 million. Mayors in Lansing, Boston, MA, Seattle, etc. promised to follow.

Among other radical ruptures, monuments and statues dedicated to cruel and racist white men in Dallas, Washington DC, Boston, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Richmond, among other cities, were removed. The statues included that of Christopher Columbus, among others. Indeed, ‘chokeholds’ by cops were banned in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Houston, Austin, Chicago, Illinois, Washington DC, Colorado, Denver, New York, Connecticut, among others. “I can’t breathe,” became a moment of deep mourning and liberation in a country where bitter memories of the past refuse to fade away.

That is why, when that spontaneous, epical moment arrives, it becomes a universal movement, touching souls and hearts. Tears flow. Songs are sung. Fists are clenched. Slogans resound on the streets. Hands and fingers join hands and fingers. And a new stream of consciousness is yet again reborn. Promising peace against violence. Beauty against ugliness. Solidarity against isolation. And in praise of a more enduring, humane and better world.

Pakistan army chief General Asim Munir

Lt Gen Asim Munir Takes Command As Pakistan’s Army chief

Pakistan army General Asim Munir on Tuesday took over the command from outgoing Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa.

Marking an end to his six-year tenure as the most powerful person in the country, Bajwa passed the baton of command to Lt Gen Munir at a ceremony held at the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, the Dawn newspaper reported.
The hype and hoopla created over the appointment of Pakistan’s new army chief came to rest after General Asim Munir and General Sahir Shamshad Mirza were notified as the next chief of army staff (COAS) and chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) respectively on November 24.

Munir, who was to retire on November 27, two days before Bajwa completed an extended tenure of almost six years, was among six generals in the race for the top post — a cause for much uncertainty and speculation till this week.

People familiar with the matter in Pakistan said Munir’s reputation as a straight military officer who played by the book helped him clinch the post.

There was an unprecedented hysteria and frenzy in Pakistan by former Prime Minister Imran Khan, his followers, and his social media brigade after the PTI government was thrown out of the power corridors of Islamabad in April. The government has accused Khan of making the appointment of the new army chief controversial for political gains.

For the last month, Pakistan was literally paralysed administratively and economically because of the delay in the appointment of the army chief who is considered the most powerful personality with all political stakeholders dying for his blessings.

Notably, Pakistan’s military has directly ruled the country of 220 million people for nearly half of its 75-year history.

Gen Munir was promoted to the rank of a three-star general in September 2018, but he took charge two months later. As such, his four-year tenure as Lt Gen ends on November 27, around the same time when incumbent Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Gen Nadeem Raza and Chief of Army Staff Gen Bajwa will be doffing their army uniform, reported Dawn.

Lt Gen Munir entered the service via the Officers Training School programme in Mangla and was commissioned into the Frontier Force Regiment.

He has been a close aide of Gen Bajwa ever since he commanded troops in the Force Command Northern Areas as a brigadier under the outgoing army chief, who was then Commander X Corps.

Lt Gen Munir was later appointed Military Intelligence director general in early 2017, and in October next year was made the Inter-Services Intelligence chief, Dawn reported. (ANI)

Sunak Foreign Policy Approach To China

Golden Era Is Over: Sunak On Foreign Policy Approach To China

In his first major address on Foreign Policy, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Monday strongly asserted that the “golden era” between Britain and China is “now over” and that it is time to evolve the approach towards China as the country is posing a systemic challenge to UK’s values and interest with its authoritarian rule.

During his address at the Lord Mayor’s Banquet at London’s Guildhall, Sunak also criticised the human rights abuses taking place in China while putting forward his stance on foreign policy.
“Let’s be clear, the so-called ‘golden era’ is over, along with the naive idea that trade would lead to social and political reform. We recognise China poses a systemic challenge to our values and interests, a challenge that grows more acute as it moves towards even greater authoritarianism,” the UK Prime Minister said in his address.

Speaking further he said, “We are taking a long-term view on China strengthening our resilience and protecting our economic security,” and added that the UK cannot simply ignore China’s global significance.

The UK Prime Minister also expressed concern over the ongoing protests in China against COVID lockdowns and said that instead of listening to people’s concerns, the Chinese government “has chosen to crack down further” as he highlighted the recent arrest and manhandling of BBC reporters in China.

Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Shanghai, where people were being bundled into police cars. Students have also demonstrated at universities in Beijing and Nanjing.

Meanwhile, hundreds of people gathered in downtown Shanghai on Sunday afternoon to hold what appeared to be a silent protest near where a demonstration against China’s zero-Covid policy erupted in the early hours.

Demonstrators holding blank pieces of paper and white flowers stood silently at several intersections, the person said under condition of anonymity, before police officers eventually moved to clear the blocked roads.

Sunak was supposed to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping during G20 Summit in Bali, Indonesia earlier this month however the meeting was called off after NATO members gathered for an emergency meeting following a missile strike in a Polish village near the Ukrainian border.

The Prime Minister listed measures the UK government has taken, including new authority granted under the National Security and Investment Act, to prevent China from restricting its influence in the UK.

Reiterating Britain’s stand on Indo-Pacific, Sunak said the Indo-Pacific will deliver over half of global growth by 2050 compared with just a quarter from Europe and North America combined, which is why Britain joined the Trans-Pacific trade deal, the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), delivering a new FTA with India and pursuing one with Indonesia.

India and the United Kingdom have a multi-dimensional strategic partnership and actively engage in bilateral trade. The two countries agreed to begin formal negotiations for an FTA in January 2022, aiming to advance trade and investment relations between them.

On Ukraine, Sunak said, “We stand by Ukraine and are also reinvigorating our European relationships to tackle challenges like security and tackling migration.”

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak made his maiden visit to Kyiv after assuming office, the previous week and assured Britain’s continued support to Ukraine in its war against Russia.

Taking to Twitter, the British Prime Minister wrote, “Britain knows what it means to fight for freedom. We are with you all the way @ZelenskyyUa,” as Sunak expressed support for Ukraine.

Earlier in August, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak wrote a letter on Ukraine’s Independence Day, praising the country’s steadfast courage in standing up to Russian “aggression” and promising support from the people of the United Kingdom.

Sunak promised to continue assisting Ukraine’s valiant warriors and declared that Britain will continue to offer humanitarian aid to make sure Ukrainian people have access to food and medicine amid the ongoing war.

He said the UK’s “adversaries and competitors plan for the long-term” as he mentioned Russia and China and said the UK will “make an evolutionary leap in our approach”. (ANI)

Anupam of the The Kashmir Files IFFI

Shameful, Says Anupam After IFFI Calls The Kashmir Files As Vulgar

Veteran actor Anupam Kher of the ‘The Kashmir Files’ fame on Tuesday said it is “shameful” on the part of IFFI (International Film Festival of India) jury head Nadav Lapid to term the film “propaganda, vulgar” at the festival’s closing ceremony.

During the closing ceremony of the IFFI on On November 28, Lapid termed ‘The Kashmir Files’ a “propaganda, vulgar film”, adding that he was “shocked” to see the film in the competition section of such a prestigious film festival.
“If the holocaust was right then the exodus of Kashmiri pandits is also right. This seems pre-planned because immediately after it the tool-kit gang became active. It’s shameful for him to make a statement like this even though he comes from a community of Jews who suffered from the holocaust,” Kher told ANI on Tuesday.

“So by making a statement like this, he has also pained those people who suffered this tragedy. I would just say may god give him wisdom so that he doesn’t use the tragedy of thousands of people to fulfill his aim on stage,” he added.

Referring to Lapid’s remarks, Anupam Kher also tweeted, “No matter how high the height of the lie is. It is always small in comparison to the truth.” The veteran actor attached pictures from ‘The Kashmir Files’ and Steven Spielberg’s film ‘Schindler’s List’ with his tweet.

When ANI contacted festival organisers on the jury head’s statements over the ‘Kashmir Files’, they declined to comment.

Released earlier this year, the ‘The Kashmir Files’ was listed in the line-up for IFFI’s Indian Panorama segment for the year 2022. The film is based on the life of Kashmiri Pandits in 1990, during the Kashmir insurgency. It is a true story, based on video interviews of the first generation. (ANI)
