Gadar 2

Chanting ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’, Villagers In Bhilwara Arrive On Tractors To Watch Gadar 2

Even as the much-anticipated ‘Gadar 2’, a sequel to the blockbuster Sunny Deol starrer ‘Gadar’, is weaving its magic across big screens all over the country, hundreds of villagers in Rajasthan’s Bhilwara district on Sunday came to a movie theatre, riding on their tractors, to watch the film.

The craze and euphoria demonstrated by them as they fetched up to the theatre in tractors left fellow cinegoers in awe.

Before arriving at the theatre, the villagers had taken out a tractor rally from the main marketplace of Bhilwara. With posters of ‘Gadar 2’ adorning their tractors, the villagers chanted “Bharat Mata Ki Jai”.

Narayan Lal Bhadala, a resident of Agarpura in Bhilwara district, said the movie, was already a rage across the country and was well on course to being a blockbuster like its previous avatar.

Speaking to ANI, he said, “About 200-300 people from our village came to watch this film on 15 tractors. There is a lot of craze around this film. Not just in cities but also in villages, the response to this film has been phenomenal. I would urge everyone to watch this film with their families. It’s a wholesome entertainer that also fills one with national pride.”

Helmed by Anil Sharma, ‘Gadar 2’ sees Sunny Deol return as Tara Singh while Ameesha Patel reprises her role as Sakina. The film also stars Utkarsh Sharma in a prominent role.

Since its theatrical release on Friday, the sequel to the 2001 blockbuster has been going great guns across the country.

According to trade analyst Taran Adarsh, the film minted a whopping Rs 40 crore on the opening day.

A romantic-action drama set against the backdrop of the Partition of India, ‘Gadar’ was directed by Anil Sharma. Sunny Deol played the protagonist Tara Singh, a Sikh truck driver from Amritsar who falls for Sakina (played by Ameesha), a Muslim girl from a Pakistani political family in Lahore. (ANI)

Congress in Himachal Pradesh I-Day

Himachal: Women Youth Cong Cadres To Raise Tricolor On I-Day

The president of the Youth Congress in Himachal Pradesh, Negi Nigam Bhandari, on Sunday said women cadres in the state will hoist the tricolour on Independence Day.

The hoisting of the national flag, while celebrating 76 years of India’s independence, will also be part of the Youth Congress’s  ‘Shakti Super SHE’ campaign.

Addressing the media conference at Rajiv Bhawan on Sunday, Bhandari said, “Serious concerns are being raised around the safety of women across the country at this time. In view of the rising atrocities on women, the Youth Congress will hold awareness events under the ‘Super Shakti SHE’ initiative at places where are facing oppression and are being stopped from breaking the shackles and chasing their dreams.”

He said the ‘Super Shakti SHE’ programme is aimed at safeguarding the rights of women in the country.

He added that Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has endeavoured to ensure better representation of women in politics and following in his footsteps, the Indian Youth Congress has made an effort to increase the number of women members.

He said the Youth Congress has enforced 33 per cent women’s reservation at the organisational level, he said.

The state president of the Youth Congress added that the ‘Super Shakti SHE’ campaign was launched in Bengaluru at the National Youth Congress Convention.

“As one of our key initiatives, we launched the ‘Super Shakti SHE’ campaign. This initiative underlines our dedication and commitment to ensuring the rights and participation of women in every sphere,” he said.

“On Independence Day, our women cadres at state, district and assembly levels will hoist the national flag and renew our pledge to fight for women’s rights and increased participation in wider domains,” he added.

INDIA Coalition PM Candidate

Indira Gandhi Divided Pak Into Two Parts; You Cannot Even Hunt A Bird: Kharge

Congress President Mallikarjun Khrage on Sunday took a swipe at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) saying that they have a habit of twisting the work done by Congress to their advantage and mislead people of the country.

Kharge, while addressing a public rally in Chhattisgarh’s Janjgir-Champa district said that it was only Congress that put everything in place in the country.

Explaining further, Kharge said that BJP only gives reference to the 1962 China war, but forgets that it was Indira Gandhi who divided Pakistan into two parts though they (BJP) are not able to hunt a bird.

“They always talk about 1962, but forget that Indira Gandhi divided Pakistan into two parts and now Bangladesh practices democratic governance. It was Congress’ rule, in which 100000 people of the neighbouring country were arrested and later released. We fought with Pakistan and liberate Bangladesh This is our (Congress) power. You (BJP) cannot even hunt a bird or a rat,” Kharge said.

Kharge was speaking during the party’s ‘Bharose Ka Sammelan’ event in Janjgir-Champa.

This is the second visit of Kharge to the Congress-ruled state after assuming charge as the AICC chief last October. Kharge was felicitated by Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel.

The visit is seen as a launch of Congress’ campaign for the Chhattisgarh assembly polls, due later this year.

Further, sharpening his attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Kharge said that the PM made fun of former PM Jawaharlal Nehru instead of speaking on violence-hit Manipur.

“Modi Ji didn’t answer (on Manipur) what Rahul Gandhi or leaders of the INDIA alliance asked him. Instead, he made fun of Nehru ji and Congress leaders. Modi ji keeps saying that he has done everything. Did power, schools etc come to Chhattisgarh after Modi came to power? Modi & Shah studied in government schools established by us. Or did they study in London or Oxford?.. And they ask us what did the Congress party do in the last 70 years? We had only put everything in place,” Kharge added.

He further said that the PM should join a drama company instead of sitting in Parliament.

“They (BJP) compare him (Modi) with Nehruji. He even didn’t contest the elections and became chief minister of Gujarat. When he was elected as the PM of the country, he bowed down to the stairs of the Parliament. He does drama and is so dramatic that I think he should go to the drama company,” Khrage said.

Kharge was speaking in the Janjgir-Champa district from where the Congress, despite a landslide victory, could win only two of the six seats in the 2018 assembly elections. (ANI)

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut

If Nawaz, Modi Can Meet, Then Why Not: Raut

Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction) leader Sanjay Raut on Sunday remarked that if former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Prime Minister Narendra Modi could meet, then why not Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar?

Talking about the speculations of Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar meeting, the Shiv Sena (UBT) leader has said, “If Nawaz Sharif and PM Narendra Modi can meet, then why not Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar? We get to know from the media that Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar met yesterday, Sharad Pawar will speak on it soon. I think Sharad Pawar invited Ajit Pawar for the INDIA bloc meeting.”

Talking further, Raut also said that even both Deputy CMs of Maharashtra are not happy with this current government.

“Anything can happen in politics. Ajit Pawar, Devendra Fadnavis and people of Maharashtra are not happy with this current government.”

Raut also said that if Priyanka Gandhi would fight from Varanasi in the coming Lok Sabha polls against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, then she will surely win.

Talking to the Press in a conference, Raut said, “Varanasi people want Priyanka Gandhi. The fight for Rae Bareli, Varanasi and Amethi is tough for BJP. People must stand with Rahul Gandhi. It’s my view, If Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi fights from Varanasi against PM Narendra Modi then she will elect for sure against him.”

Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders in Madhya Pradesh have filed complaints against Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi, MP Congress chief Kamal Nath and former Union Minister Arun Yadav’s Twitter handles over a post accusing the state government in Madhya Pradesh of ‘corruption’, police said.

According to a statement released on the official X (formally known as Twitter) handle of Indore Commissioner of Police (CP) late on Saturday night, local BJP’s legal cell convener Nimesh Pathak lodged a complaint with claims of a fake letter, bearing the name of a person named, Gyanendra Awasthi, was being circulated on social media with allegations that the contractors in the state were being asked to pay 50 per cent commission.

Based on the complaint, a case under sections 420, and 469 of IPC has been registered at Indore’s Sanyogitaganj police station, the police said.

A similar case under sections 469, 500, and 501 of the IPC has been registered in Bhopal as well following a complaint by local leaders of the party, officials said.

Earlier on Friday, Congress national general secretary, Priyanka Gandhi, alleged that a union of contractors from Madhya Pradesh has written a letter to the Chief Justice of the High Court, complaining their payment is released only after paying 50 per cent commission. (ANI)

BJP Files Complaints Against Priyanka’s 50% Commission Charge In MP

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders in Madhya Pradesh have filed complaints against Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi, MP Congress chief Kamal Nath and former Union Minister Arun Yadav’s Twitter handles over a post accusing the state government in Madhya Pradesh of ‘corruption’, police said.

“The Union of Contractors in Madhya Pradesh has written a letter to the Chief Justice of the High Court complaining that payment is received only after paying 50 per cent commission in the state. The corrupt BJP government in Karnataka used to collect a 40 per cent commission. In Madhya Pradesh, BJP has gone ahead by breaking its own record of corruption. The people of Karnataka ousted the government with a 40 per cent commission, now the people of Madhya Pradesh will remove the BJP government with a 50 per cent commission from power,” Priyanka said in a tweet.

After this Kamalnath and Arun Yadav also made similar posts.

Terming Priyanka Gandhi’s allegation false, MP Home Minister Narottam Mishra said that “From the tweet, the mentality of the Congress can be known, how much disgusting politics the Congress is doing and at present, how much politics based on lies the Congress is doing in Madhya Pradesh. It is also proved that currently, the Congress is issueless in the state.”

“Priyanka Gandhi ji…first Kamal Nath, Digvijaya Singh, and Arun Yadav made your brother (Rahul Gandhi) lie about farmers’ loan waiver of Rs 2 lakhs in the state during the last state assembly polls. Now they have made you to tweet on the basis of a false letter. They proved you a ‘liar’. People already have no faith in Congress and your false tweets have shattered their thoughts about you,” he said.

“I would like to Challenge congressmen to give proof about the allegation made in the tweet otherwise he had all options open to take action into the matter,” Mishra added. (ANI)

Former CJI Gogoi Stirs Up a Debate

Should Parliament Have the Power to Change the Constitution? Former CJI Gogoi Stirs Up a Debate

Last week, Ranjan Gogoi, former chief justice of India and now a Member of Parliament, sparked a controversy that raised eyebrows when, while supporting the Delhi Services Bill that gives more power to the central government over the administration of the national capital, he questioned the validity and relevance of the basic structure doctrine, which limits the Parliament’s power to amend the Constitution.

But before we analyze the implications of what the former CJI, who was nominated to Parliament by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), said, here’s a sidebar about him: Gogoi was a controversial chief justice of India. He faced allegations of sexual harassment by a former Supreme Court employee in 2019, shortly after he was appointed as the CJI. He denied the charges and claimed that they were part of a conspiracy to destabilize the judiciary. A three-judge panel of the Supreme Court cleared him of the allegations, but the process was criticized by many as unfair and opaque.

Gogoi also delivered some controversial judgments on sensitive issues such as Ayodhya, Rafale, and Kashmir.

Last week in Parliament he questioned the Constitution’s basic structure doctrine.  The basic structure doctrine was first put forward by the Supreme Court in the landmark Kesavananda Bharati case in 1973, and has since been used to protect the core features of the Constitution, such as democracy, secularism, federalism, judicial review, and fundamental rights, from being altered or abrogated by constitutional amendments. The doctrine has been hailed as a safeguard of constitutional supremacy and a check on majoritarianism.

Gogoi, however, argues that the doctrine had a “debatable jurisprudential basis” and that it was not part of the original Constitution. He also suggested that the Parliament has the legislative competence to make laws for Union Territories like Delhi, and that the Bill does not violate any other part of the Constitution. He said that if full-fledged federalism is desired for Delhi, then an amendment can be made to make it a full-fledged state.

Gogoi’s views have been seen by many as an attempt to undermine the basic structure doctrine and to justify the government’s encroachment on the autonomy of Delhi. Some have also pointed out that Gogoi himself had upheld the doctrine as a judge and had invoked it in several judgments, such as the one on Aadhaar  and the one on Sabarimala. Has he changed his stance because of his allegiance to the ruling party that has nominated him to Parliament?

On the flipside, by raising the question about the Constitution’s basic structure doctrine, Gogoi has also raised the need for a deeper debate on the future of constitutional democracy in India.

Modi and the Indian media

Have you wondered who the official media adviser to the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi is? If you have, the answer is: no one. The current media adviser to Modi, who has been Prime Minister since 2014 is not clear. There are a few people, including  a couple of former bureaucrats, whom Modi may consult with on some issues but in a curious departure from the practice followed by most of his predecessors, the Prime Minister has not appointed an official media adviser.

The reason perhaps is that he doesn’t really need one. A media adviser to the Prime Minister normally has many functions and responsibilities: he or she can act as a sluice gate or filter for the Prime Minister and his office’s interactions with media; or can be the spin doctor for shaping perceptions and building the Prime Minister’s image and stance on different issues; he can coordinate press meets or interviews for the PM and his office; advise on communications during crises and tricky situations; and, act as an analyst who reads the mood in the media and feed it back to the PM’s office.

The Indian Prime Minister ostensibly does not need anyone to manage relations with Indian media. Primarily because the need does not arise. The Indian media pretty much manages itself when it comes to the top executive office in the government.

The Prime Minister has rarely given interviews to Indian media in the past nearly decade that he has had the top job. There have been no press conferences, interactions, or meetings where he has engaged with representatives of media. He has stopped the practice of taking along with him members of the press when he travels officially abroad.

It has worked fine. The media, particularly the mainstream established, and so-called legacy media, never criticizes him or his policies. And, if you’re looking to read critiques or objective analysis of policies, stances, nuances, and everything else that makes for informative and interesting reading you are better off seeking out small niche publications or global media publications instead of the usual big-name Indian newspapers, TV channels, and news websites.

The Prime Minister’s preferred media strategy has been to stay silent, and, in effect, project himself on a level higher than the rest of Indian polity. Critics attack him for not speaking out on issues such as communal violence, corruption, and hate speeches, often perpetrated by those owing allegiance to his party or its affiliates. But it is also a fact that his strategy of being above all of it has given him a sort of (perhaps mythical) dignity and respect, certainly so among his supporters.

Recently, after months of full-scale violence in the north-eastern state of Manipur where two indigenous tribes have been at war, and where atrocities against women and others have shocked the world, the Prime Minister was forced to address issue in Parliament where India’s depleted Opposition parties (they have only 203 of the 543 seats in Lok Sabha) moved a motion of no-confidence against him. He expressed his anguish about what was happening in Manipur but trained his sights on the Opposition and blamed it for obstructing a debate on the situation in Manipur. In his speech, he poked crude fun at his opponents and was cheered by his colleagues on the Treasury benches.

While everyone dutifully documented the Prime Minister’s speech, few in the media made any critical assessment of the fact that the Prime Minister had effectively said nothing about what the government was planning to do in Manipur and about how to avoid such communal clashes in the future.

As we said, the Prime Minister does not need anyone to advise how to manage the media. The media in India manages itself.

The army continues to rule in Pakistan

Imran Khan, the former prime minister of Pakistan, is facing a political and legal crisis after he was arrested and convicted on corruption charges in May 2023. His supporters have accused the army, which has a history of meddling in civilian affairs, of orchestrating a coup against him. They have also staged violent protests in several cities, targeting military installations and personnel.

Khan, who came to power in 2018 with the backing of the army, had a falling out with the generals over his policies on India, Afghanistan, and the economy. He also tried to assert his authority over the army by appointing his own loyalists to key positions. The army, which sees itself as the guardian of the nation’s interests and security, resented Khan’s attempts to challenge its dominance and influence.

The army has used its control over the judiciary, the media, and the opposition parties to undermine Khan’s legitimacy and popularity. It has also cracked down on his party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), by arresting its leaders and activists, banning its rallies, and freezing its funds. The army has also tried to create a rift within the PTI by wooing some of its dissident members.

The army’s role in Pakistan’s politics has been controversial and divisive. While some see it as a stabilizing force that can prevent chaos and extremism, others see it as a threat to democracy and human rights. The fate of Imran Khan and his party will depend on how the army manages this crisis and how the public responds to it.

Why ‘Oppenheimer’ may never be shown in Japan

Christopher Nolan’s new film, Oppenheimer, is about J. Robert Oppenheimer, considered the father of the atomic bomb, and focuses on the complexities of his character and personality, his dilemmas between commitment to science and humanitarian concerns and much more. The film, a blockbuster, crossed $550 million at the box office globally and became the highest-grossing WWII film in history. Since its release in July it has already been watched by millions around the world.

But not in Japan. Recently, Japan marked the 78th anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the two cities where the bombs created by Oppenheimer were dropped, killing 210,000. More than 100,000 people exposed to radiation from the bombs are still alive. The film, while not explicitly depicting the horrors that the bombings spread, includes the incidents in its narrative.

It is unlikely that the film will make it to cinema theatres in Japan where many believe the phenomenon of memes and jokes combining Oppenheimer and the film, Barbie (a $1 billion grossing film on a doll), makes a mockery of the suffering that thousands of Japanese civilians have undergone as a result of the bombings.

The woman who controls North Korea’s propaganda

When North Korea, which most of the rest of the world considers a rogue nation, controlled by Kim Jong Un, known as the Supreme leader, has to protest or make a statement about its enemies (which is almost everyone else in the world), it turns to Kim Yo Jong, the younger sister of Kim Jong Un.

The 35-year-old is the Deputy Department Director of the Publicity and Information Department of the Workers’ Party of Korea, or WPK. She is also a member of the State Affairs Commission of North Korea, the highest decision-making body in the country. She is considered by some commentators to be a possible successor to her brother in case of his death or incapacitation.

Ms. Kim is also responsible for crafting her brother’s public image and controlling the state propaganda and media.

Later this month when the US, Japan and South Korea meet at Camp David to discuss North Korea’s aggressive actions, and when South Korea, backed by the US, organizes military drills to show their ability to thwart any attacks by the north, Ms. Kim will swing into action with her propaganda strategies.

Not a mincer of words, Ms. Kim has been known to use choice epithets to describe North Korea’s enemies. She has likened the South Korean president to an “impudent flunky beggar”, and compared the US to a “scared barking dog”.

With rumours of her brother the 41-year-old Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un not keeping good health, it is widely speculated that Ms. Kim could be his successor. She has another elder brother but he is apparently not considered to be strong enough for the job.

Rahul Gandhi

The More They Try To Separate Us: Rahul To Wayanad People

Addressing a gathering in his parliamentary constituency for the first time after being reinstated as Lok Sabha MP, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday hit out at the BJP saying that his relationship with people of Wayanad will become even stronger if they try to separate them.

“The BJP and the RSS do not understand what a family is. They don’t understand that the more they try to separate you and me, the closer we will become. They think that if we disqualify Rahul Gandhi, his relationship with Wayanad will break. If you disqualify Rahul Gandhi, his relationship with Wayanad will become even stronger ,” the reinstated MP said.

Rahul was reinstated as Wayanad MP last week, after the Supreme Court on August 4 stayed his conviction in the ‘Modi’ surname remark case.

Continuing his attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over violence-hit Manipur, the Congress leader said that rapes and murders are happening in the northeastern state but the former laughed and joked in Parliament.

The Congress MP has been launching attacks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi since the latter’s over two-hour-long speech in Parliament.

Rahul alleges that the Prime Minister spoke for 2 hours and 13 minutes in Parliament but he spoke about Manipur for only two minutes.

“There are thousands of people in Manipur who have suffered this. Someone’s house has been burnt down, someone’s sister has been raped, and someone’s brother and parents have been killed. It is as if somebody threw kerosene across Manipur and set it on fire…There is blood everywhere, there is murder everywhere, rape everywhere. That is the situation in Manipur and the Prime Minister spoke for 2 hours and 13 minutes in Parliament but he spoke on Manipur for 2 minutes. He laughed, joked. His cabinet laughed, joked…” Rahul Gandhi said.

Earlier on Friday, while addressing a press briefing in the national capital, Gandhi launched a similar attack on PM Modi.

“I heard PM Modi speaking in Parliament for about 2 hours and 13 minutes. He was cracking jokes, laughing with NDA MPs sloganeering. It does not behove a prime minister,” Rahul Gandhi said yesterday.

Emphasising that the Indian Army is capable enough to resolve the situation and bring normalcy to the state, he said, “Indian Army can stop this nonsense, drama in two days, but the PM wants Manipur to burn and does not want to extinguish the fire.”

Earlier on Thursday, PM Modi appealed to all Opposition parties to get involved in a collective effort to gain the trust of the people of Manipur and asked them not to exploit the situation in the northeastern state for political gains.

PM Modi further asked the opposition to ‘work together’ for restoring peace in Manipur and bringing normalcy there.

“I want to request the MPs of the Parliament to understand the value of this time. Come and proceed together. In this country, there have been more serious issues in the past, but we found a way to work together. Let’s come together. Take people of Manipur in confidence. Don’t take advantage of Manipur for doing politics. What has happened there in Manipur is unfortunate. Understand their pain and work for healing it. This should be our only way,” PM Modi said while replying to the debate on the no-confidence motion. (ANI)
